Tiny Dachshund Works as Shop Dog From Human's Pocket and Gets Fed Like Royalty

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 10:55am

Most shop dogs greet customers at the door. Some nap behind the counter. And then there is this Dachshund puppy, who has decided the best place to clock in is inside a human's pocket, where the benefits package includes sandwich service.

The video is unfairly cute. The little bean is tucked into a man's pocket as if he's the assistant manager of the small shop, accepting bites of lunch like this is how working life should be. Just a miniature little one sitting there with the confidence of a tiny Dachshund prince who knows payroll isn't his department, but snacks absolutely are.

@k.e.maker

Sharing lunch with the smallest shop dawg #dachshund #runt

♬ Robin Hood Theme - Roger Miller

You can see why people love it. There's something old-fashioned and sweet about the scene that it feels like it belongs on a wall somewhere. A man sharing lunch with the smallest shop dog, both taking a break from the day, one like a regular adult and the other parked in a pocket like a warm little baked potato. It has that "somebody paint this immediately" kind of charm.

The shop dog part of this makes it better, too. He's living his working-class royal fantasy, tucked safely against his person while lunch is shared one careful bite at a time. It's the kind of moment that makes you stop scrolling because it feels simple and deeply adorable.

If you have a small dog, you already know this routine. They ask for warmth, proximity, attention, and exactly one bite of whatever you're eating. Then another one. Then maybe a tiny corner. Suddenly, you're negotiating sandwich rights with someone who weighs less than a shoe.

This puppy looks loved. He's close, included, watched over, and treated like the tiniest employee of the month. He may never run the register, but morale has never been higher.

Tiny Dogs Can Share the Moment Without Sharing the Whole Sandwich

If you want to share your lunch with your pocket pal, keep it simple and tiny. Plain bits are usually the safest route, and you want to skip anything rich, salty, spicy, or loaded with ingredients that dogs shouldn't have. A bite can be a sweet bonding moment, but your pup doesn't need half your meal to feel included. (This is mainly a reminder for me.)

The American Kennel Club has some tips on which human foods dogs can and cannot eat, and it's good to keep in mind before handing over scraps. Many human foods are safe for dogs, but only in small, plain, and unseasoned portions, and some are just a flat-out bad idea. You can make your pup feel like royalty without a pocket or your whole sandwich, but keep a pocket handy just in case.

Senior Cat Claims Golden Retriever Puppy Brother's 'Bedroom' As His Own, and Paws Fly

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 10:10am

Sibling jealousy is common, even in dogs. My Pug mix automatically pushes his way in when I give my senior Dachshund a hug. He can't stand not being the center of attention. And of course, my Doxie gets into a snit if she sees her Pug brother getting a snack that's a half a millimeter bigger than hers. They always want what the other has and aren't afraid to show it — and even fight for it.

Theo the senior cat and Meatball the Golden Retriever puppy seem to have the same dynamic. When Theo got a glimpse of of his fur baby brother's furnished crate, he decided to move in and take over.

In the TikTok from @sweetsbymaryllc, Theo and Meatball were both inside a cozy dog crate that apparently was set up for the precious puppy. Yet Theo had other plans.

"POV: Your senior cat brother has decided that your bedroom is better than his and is willing to fight for it," the onscreen text explained.

The senior cat began pawing at Meatball's nose, obviously trying to make a statement, when their mom interjected.

"Theo, that is his kennel!" their mom reprimanded. "That is his room! Theo, get out of his room."

The feline fur baby backed off a bit while Meatball verbalized his protest of the uninvited company. As Theo curled up to get comfortable, the canine cutie sat up and started to get physical. The pretty kitty wasn't about to be intimidated and swatted right back.

Their mom tried again — unsuccessfully — to get Theo to vacate the crate, but the cat refused to leave.

Meatball Got Fed Up

The Golden Retriever puppy screwed up his courage again and swatted at Theo, though his paws never landed. As the older fur baby brother, Theo felt he held all the power and merely hissed at Meatball in response.

Related: 'Huge' 8-Week-Old Golden Retriever Puppy Has the Entire Vet Office Obsessed

That did it for the perturbed pooch. Meatball ran out of the crate and around the room to blow off some steam as Theo gave a final victory hiss.

While their mom didn't condone the behavior, she definitely had a good laugh at the comical chaos.

This Tuxedo Cat Looks Like a Red Panda and Runs Like His Entire Soul Just Left His Body

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 10:00am

There's really nothing cuter than when a cat gets the zoomies. One minute, they're politely begging for a bite of your Taco Bell, and the next, they're tearing through the house like they've been possessed by the spirit of a bouncy ball.

That's exactly what happens in this hilarious clip when a bicolor Tuxedo Persian cat launches himself onto the bed to make sure everyone knows he has arrived. The sudden burst of fluffy chaos is equal parts majestic and completely ridiculous.

@jghjh984

#cat

♬ original sound - jghjh

The hilarious TikTok clip was shared by @jghjh984 and shows this guy, who vaguely looks like a chocolate marshmallow bar. This Tuxedo cat with serious Red Panda energy is zooming around the house with the kind of urgency usually reserved for people who suddenly remember they left the oven on.

Related: Playful Cat Gets the Zoomies and Literally Runs up the Wall

The funniest part is the way he runs. It's less "cat casually crossing the room," and more "my entire spirit has temporarily exited my body, and I must skedaddle immediately."

Honestly, I've never seen such tiny legs move with such dramatic purpose.

His fluffy face, dark markings, and chaotic movements immediately reminded viewers of a Red Panda, and people in the comments section absolutely agreed.

"Oh, he's got orange software," one person joked.

Another viewer wrote, "He looks and acts like a Red Panda."

"Just skedaddling everywhere," someone else added, which honestly may be the most accurate description possible.

One cat parent admitted, "This is so much cuter than my cat visiting me just to barf on my comforter."

And another viewer simply declared, "He has Red Panda energy."

As a cat person, I completely understand becoming obsessed with weird little personality quirks like this. One of the reasons we love kitties so much is because every single one seems to have been programmed by a completely different team.

Some cats are sophisticated.

Some cats are mysterious.

And some cats sprint through the house, looking like a sentient cotton ball escaping from responsibility.

Which, frankly, is beautiful.

Why Some Cats Get the Zoomies @angusthegingercat

Angus’ zoomies are in full force today🫣 #catsoftiktok #kitten #orangekitten #cutekitten #catzoomies

♬ original sound - Kali the Collie Labrador

Sudden bursts of energy, often called the zoomies, are completely normal behavior in cats. These random sprints allow kitties to release pent-up energy and tap into their natural hunting instincts.

Young cats and highly playful breeds may experience zoomies more frequently, but even adult felines can suddenly transform into tiny furry tornadoes for no apparent reason.

Scientists may call it normal feline behavior.

Cat parents call it "Tuesday."

Target's Affordable Pet Pool Is Selling Out Fast, and Shoppers Say It's Built to Last

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 9:48am

Parade Pets aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Summer heat hits differently when you have a dog who's panting in the shade by 10 a.m. Inflatable pools seem like a good solution until they spring a slow leak, or your dog won't go near them anyway.

The hardest part about buying a dog pool isn’t filling it with water. It's convincing your dog to step inside. Target has you covered with the perfect pet pool for your dog, and we've got the tips to help your dog enjoy it.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

Yaheetech Foldable Dog & Cat Pool with Sprinkler, $37.99-$41.99 at Target

The cheapest version of the Yaheetech Foldable Dog & Cat Pool with Sprinkler at Target right now is $37.99. That is for the XL pool, which is 63 inches x 63 inches x 12 inches. For larger dogs, you can get the XXXL version for $41.99, which is 71 inches x 71 inches x 12 inches. It's available in black, gray and blue.

Unlike inflatable pools, this foldable pool is made of waterproof PVC and polyester mesh in the interlayer, with durable MDF boards in the interior material. The non-slip bottom makes swimming and splashing stress-free for your dog.

The moment they finish their summer fun, you can fold the pool up and easily store it in your garage because it takes up so little space when it's packed away. Use it for camping, traveling or hot summer days—your dog will thank you.

Why Some Dogs Hesitate Around Water

Here's what nobody tells you when they recommend a dog pool: a lot of dogs won't touch it voluntarily.

Some will investigate, step right in, and splash around like they've been doing it for years. Others will sniff the rim, circle it twice and go lie down in the shade. A few will want nothing to do with it at all. And all those are normal dog behaviors.

A new pool introduces unfamiliar sights, sounds, reflections and textures. For example, the slippery feeling under their paws is a challenge for many dogs.

The good news is that with some patience, most dogs can learn to enter the pool on their own.

How to Get Your Dog Into the Pool

The big mistake most pet parents make is trying to force things. They push their dog into the water and hope for the best. Wrong!

Instead, start with curiosity, not pressure. Set up the pool empty and allow your dog to investigate it. Let your dog sniff the pool, walk around it and explore it without any pressure.

Every time your dog comes near, reward their curiosity with treats and praise.

Adding Water to a Pool

Once your dog walks in and out of the pool without hesitation, it is time to add some water. Start small with an inch or two. Hold a treat above the water line and let your dog lean for it. Putting one foot in is enough progress to reward with a treat.

Gradually add water, but let your dog set the pace. Some dogs will enter during the first session, others may need several days.

The good news is you can get this cheap pool at Target right now and have plenty of time to train your dog to enjoy it before the heatwave days of July and August come around.

Is It Worth It?

For most dog parents, yes. The design is better than inflatable pools in day-to-day use, and the price is great for the quality you get. Similar products cost a lot more.

This pool is already selling fast at Target, so get yours now. If your dog loves it, you will have a backyard engagement play activity until September.

English Setter Puppy's Spotted Coat Makes Him Look Just Like a Tiny Giraffe

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 9:20am

English Setter puppies are already adorable, but this one is especially unique because of his unusual spotted coat.

The English Setter puppy's coat is so remarkable that people can't stop comparing him to a baby giraffe, and the video is going viral for it.

Just look at that beautiful, spotted face!

You almost can't believe the resemblance to a giraffe's coloring.

One person wrote in the comments, "I know a giraffe when I see one, what a cutie."

Another said, "He’s beautiful. The spots of caramel. The vanilla."

If you love English Setter puppy content, then this is a great account to follow, as this pup, named Mr. Bill, was born in January of this year and has lots of cute videos.

Related: English Setter Is a Total ‘Freckle Puppy’ and We Can’t Get Enough

How English Setters Get Their Signature Spots

So how did Mr. Bill, the English Setter, get that beautiful giraffe-like coat?

All English Setters are born with mostly white coats, and then they have different degrees of pigmentation in shades of orange, black, or a flecking pattern known as Belton.

Belton is the name of the town in England where the dogs originated from in the 1820s (though a variation of the dog known as "Setting Spaniels" was seen as early as the 14th century in England).

According to the American Kennel Club, one of the two breeders responsible for the English Setters we know and love today was Edward Laverack, who standardized the breed and is the one responsible for the Belton coat, which makes the dogs so unique.

Then, another man, named Richard Purcell Llewellin, created the "Llewellin" line by breeding Laverack's dogs with other working Setters. These dogs are known for their incredible hunting skills.

English Setters can also have black flecking, in which they're known as Blue Beltons.

A dilute orange flecking is known as Lemon Belton, and then a dilute blue color makes them a Liver Belton.

The type of Belton they have is related to their eye color. A Lemon Belton or Liver Belton English Setter will have lighter eyes.

As for Mr. Bill's unique giraffe-coloring pattern, he could be classified as a Lemon Belton or an Orange Belton, as his white coat is covered with diluted tan, copper, and orange flecks and spots.

This combination gives him a coat that perfectly mimics that of a giraffe.

This Parrot's Morning Affirmations Are Better Than Yours

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 8:20am

Talking birds can learn to say just about anything, which is why they're the coolest of cool. They're always watching, listening, and studying their people, so it's no surprise when they pick up something super cute. Some of them may even be your new inspiration for starting the day with some words of affirmation, so you can tackle the world.

Pickle Tickle, the Indian Ringneck Parrot, is the king of self-love. The talented, intelligent, and funny bird's words are sure to bring a smile to your face—and maybe inspire you to hype yourself up today, too.

@pickle.tickle.the.irn

The audacity of this birb! This was an eventful day and I’m wore out. I’ve got my two grand-birbs for the next five days. Please send help! 💜😮‍💨 #indianringneck #parrot #talkingparrot #petbird #birdtok

Pickle Tickle, the Parrot, must've been a life coach in another life by the way he's mastered the art of affirmation. Repeating he's a "saweeeeet bird" sets the tone for the day, and honestly, it's something we should all be doing, so thanks, Pickle!

Getting hyped is part of Pickle's morning activities, but once he's feeling good and confident, he can intervene with his mischief-making bird siblings (Gertie, the beautiful yellow Parrot, is known as the resident boss). The growling, telling her to "get back," then joyfully peeing in her cage is 100% a power move, but he's so adorable, he gets a pass.

Thankfully, things resolved between Gertie and Pickle. That's life with big personality birds. But if Pickle says "it's OK," then it is!

Related: This Adorable Parrot Thinks She’s the Neighborhood Sheriff—and Takes Her Job Seriously

Known as "a sweet and sour bird," this precious Parrot and his hilarious antics entertain more than 34k TikTok followers daily, and it's clear to see why.

These days, Pickle is sharing Mom more than usual, as his human sister's two birds, Poppy and Bubby, are visiting for a bit. She shared with fans that she was initially nervous about how things might go with so many personalities under one roof, but added that Pickle is doing great with his guests and the new dynamic with multiple birds in the house is going well!

He really is such a good boy, and his sweet words of affirmation are only a part of his vocabulary. Many wondered how many words he knows, and thanks to Mom, we get a snapshot of his vocal talents:

@pickle.tickle.the.irn

Pickle Bird loves to talk and interact. He even picked up a new hello. A British version? He’s super excited about oat groats and safflower seed. He only got a few. #parrot #ringneckparrot #talkingparrot #funnypets #birdtok

♬ original sound - It’s Pickle! | Ringneck Parrot How Many Words Can Indian Ringneck Parrots Learn?

Parrots can learn to speak 250 words or more, which explains exactly how he landed on "it's OK" as his personal defense strategy. They're widely regarded as some of the greatest talking birds with a few distinct traits, including:

  • Clarity: Their high-pitched words are easily understandable compared to other talking birds.
  • Ability to understand context: They're not your average birds who mimic humans—they learn to associate phrases with actions.
  • Evolving: Indian Ringneck Parrots begin mumbling between 7 and 9 months old and eventually evolve into speaking clear words.

Parrots learn to talk through repetition, positive reinforcement (treats or food), enthusiasm and inflection in our voices, and most of all, consistency.

Not all birds are as precious as Pickle, but if you're ever having a bad day and in need of a boost, just scroll through his videos, and you'll instantly feel as good as he does!

Trio of House Cats are Basically Human Roommates While Watching TV, and It's so Relatable

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 8:02am

The indisputable best part of living with other people and having roommates is the built in socialization. You can catch up about your day, share meals together, and even bond over watching the same shows—often together!

It should be a surprise to no one that animals love this about living with each other, too.

Coco & Tiger is an account on social media dedicated to documenting the lives of the house cats in the human's lives. And the trio love to do things together. Even in the exact same way that their human counterparts might!

@c0c0tiger

They come running anytime they hear the TV turn on now 😭 #catsoftiktok #petsoftiktok #petlover #cattok #kittens

♬ Fat & Jobless (Pet POV) - PawVibe

In the video shared to the account, the trio are very focused on a particularly riveting episode of Cat TV on YouTube. They're all perched up on some chairs, locked in on their episode. Their owner even went so far as to compare them to iPad babies, and honestly? The comparison is not far off and probably very well deserved!

How Cats Bond with Each Other

Cats bond with each other in a variety of ways, and it can result in very close relationships with their fellow felines.

Sharing scent with each other, also called "allo-rubbing" is a way to indicate that they belong together. Rubbing faces or bodies together swaps pheromones which signals that they're a pack and a part of a group. Grooming each other is a sign of affection and respect, and cats who truly trust each other will participate in this as a bonding activity.

When cats are very close they'll sleep together, often curling up together and even "holding" hands. Bonded cats love spending time together and won't just lounge together but will also play and even wrestle when they're having fun. Other signs of cats being close are nose touching, head butting, and other non-aggressive physical greetings.

Needless to say, the trio of cats watching TV together clearly love each other and are having a ball. Now if one watches an episode without the others, it might be a different story!

Walk into any pet store, and you will find enclosed beds, pods and cave structures in different styles, colors and designs. Most of them will work as a retreat spot for your pet to get some quiet time.

The problem is most of them look like they were designed for a pet, and not for the room. That style compromise is something most pet parents have quietly accepted. They give the cat what it needs, and live with the visual cost.

4 Cats & Dogs Coco Coffee Table With Hidden Pet Hideout, $239.99 at Costco

Costco

For many pets, the most important part of the room is a quiet corner under a desk, a spot behind the couch, or the favorite nook where nobody bothers them.

The 4 Cats & Dogs Coco Coffee Table from Costco combines that functionality with home decor that many pets love: their own private retreat.

At $239.99, this coffee table that doubles down as a pet retreat includes a drawer and an open shelf for things like remotes, books and items you set down and forget.

The pet space sits just below the tabletop. Pets can access it from both the front and the rear, allowing cats and small dogs to move through it, settle inside, or keep one paw in while the other stays out, depending on the social situation.

The best part is the tabletop, made of tempered glass. It allows pets to see up and out from inside the space. Instead of feeling like they are in a sealed box, they feel like they are in their private space, monitor the situation, and decide whether to go out and socialize on their terms.

Why Do Pets Need Private Spaces?

Most dogs and cats will instinctively seek enclosed spaces during a thunderstorm, when the vacuum cleaner comes to life, or when guests arrive. Not all pets are social butterflies and happy-go-lucky golden retrievers.

Some pets want private space and comfort when guests are around. Having access to a quiet, protected area helps pets manage everyday stress. They gain control over the environment.

Try to imagine a family gathering with plenty of children running around, conversations filling the room, and the front door kept open. Pet parents might enjoy the activity, but some pets may look for a way out. This coffee table gives them that.

Most traditional pet beds occupy valuable floor space. This coffee table serves multiple purposes and fits perfectly into your home decor.

For households with limited space, the 4 Cats & Dogs Coco Coffee Table's multifunctionality is everything.

'Totally Broken' Street Dog Gets Movie Star Name and a Special Promise From Her Rescuer

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 7:10am

Dogs living on the streets without a home is a global crisis and requires tireless commitment when attempting to make a positive difference. Niall Harbison created his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, almost five years ago and continues to be amazed by the love and resilience of the canines he comes across.

Harbison just rescued a dog brave enough to momentarily let her guard down despite being in fragile health. He gave her the name Marilyn Monroe as a sign of her regaining her beauty.

View this post on Instagram

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo told Marilyn's story and described the condition she was in when Harbison found her.

"Five days ago, this beautiful soul walked through our doors," the onscreen text explained as Marilyn sweetly approached Harbison. "She's an old girl and her body is completely exhausted. Marilyn was in desperate need of a miracle."

Marilyn barely had any fur and her skin was clearly damaged, causing her major discomfort and pain. She received medical care at Happy Doggo, along with love and support from her new furry friends.

"Our medical team immediately got to work, treating her painful skin," the story continued. "And our rescue dogs stepped in to show her the way, teaching her that she can feel safe, and that humans can be kind too."

Marilyn Monroe Has a Heart of Gold

A previous post from @niallharbison shared that the sweet dog's health concerns included malnourishment, issues with her eyes and ears, and emotional trauma. Yet Marilyn got the courage to approach Harbison when he arrived.

"Despite being totally broken and ignored and forgotten about on the streets, with horrendous skin and aching bones, she waddled over to meet me and say hello," the caption read. "As her head rested into me, I could feel like she was a dog that was completely broken and begging for help, sick of being ignored."

Harbison was so touched by the dog's trust and attempt to reach out, he made a vow to help her heal and gave her the iconic name for a special reason.

"As the vets treated her, I whispered a promise in her ear," the text shared. "Her life would change starting today. She would get her dignity back. I called her Marilyn Monroe because she will be a beautiful blond again soon."

Harbison is keeping his promise and making sure Marilyn is getting everything from medical treatment and proper nutrition to tons of love and affection to help her recover.

"Her healing starts here," the video concluded as Marilyn relaxed in a hammock wearing a fresh new bandana.

Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina, and a retirement village for senior dogs.

8 Words That Calm Dogs Instantly

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 6:10am

Just like with people, dogs can get scared or nervous in certain situations and need reassurance to help them feel safer. When that happens, as a pet parent it's only natural to want to do anything you can to be there for your furry family member. Though, you may be curious how you should speak to a stressed dog in those moments. The good new is, saying calming phrases can help. That's why we rounded up 8 words that make dogs feel like everything is okay, according to a trainer.

After all, when things feel different or stressful, dogs start looking for clues that they're safe and for guidance on what to do next. And they will probably look to you. "One of the strongest sources of comfort for most dogs is the person they trust most," says Bridget Murphy, the CEO of Koru K9 Dog Training. "You are your dog’s person. You are the one to have the closest bond and the highest level of trust."

However, that trust comes with responsibility, and it's pretty profound. When something is off, your dog will want you to let them know if they're still alright. Below, Murphy shares what to say to an anxious dog and help them settle down. You may be surprised how simple these dog calming words are that will reassure your pup during a tough moment. By using them, you can be there for your devoted companion when they need you the most.

Words That Help Calm Dogs and Make Them Feel Safe Saying certain words and phrases can calm an anxious dog.

Have you ever wondered, "How do I make my dog feel okay and safe?" If so, you're not alone. It turns out that what you say can go a long way when it comes to soothing a dog. Here are the best words and phrases trainer recommended using to improve their mood.

1. "Good boy/girl"

No matter if you have a big or small dog, they're bound to feel uneasy from time to time. One calming phrase for dogs you can use is one you probably already know, but had no idea it could reduce anxiety. "There isn’t a time that a dog parent has said 'good boy' or 'good girl' without following it with love, affection or treats," Murphy says.

For this reason, Murphy says using "good boy/girl" is a great example of positive reinforcement training when your pup needs some reassuance in a scary moment. "If those words are consistently followed by affection, rewards, or positive experiences, they become powerful markers that let your dog know everything is alright."

2. "Go to Your Crate/Bed"

This one may surprise some dog moms and dads, but trainers emphasize that using terms like “crate,” “bed,” or “place” isn’t about confinement or punishment when you instruct your pup to go there. Instead, it’s about direction, routine and safety.

When you send a dog to their crate or bed, you’re guiding them to a familiar, predictable space where they know what to do and how to relax. According to Murphy, this clarity is part of what helps dogs settle down emotionally.

“All good things happen there, and it is their safe space,” Murphy says. “Dogs generally relax more easily when they know exactly what is expected of them. A well-conditioned place, bed, or crate becomes a predictable refuge where the dog can settle down and decompress.”

In many cases, this simple cue can help reduce anxiety and reinforce a sense that they have nothing to worry about because your dog is returning to a space associated with relaxation and comfort.

3. "Sit"

What if a single word could help a dog feel grounded, focused, and safe in an overwhelming moment? Trainers say that word is “sit.

Murphy points out that “sit” is often seen as a basic obedience command, but in practice, it can do much more than that. “In reality, it often serves as a familiar task that helps a stressed dog shift their focus away from uncertainty and toward something they know how to do successfully,” Murphy reports.

Trainers say this easy action can be grounding, helping anxious dogs feel more stable and reassured. Over time, this simple cue can help reinforce a sense of comfort and help a dog feel safe because they understand what’s expected and can succeed in the moment.

4. "Yes!"

When your pup doesn't feel safe, it can be hearbreaking as their pet parent, but what you say to your nervous dog can reduce your dog’s stress. In fact, “yes” might be the simplest word you can say, but for dogs, it can be deeply reassuring and act as a calming command as well.

In dog training, “yes” is used as a marker word, a clear signal that a dog has done something right and that a reward is coming. Trainers say this kind of positive reinforcement doesn’t just teach behavior, it can also help calm anxious dogs and make them feel safe and like everything is okay in the moment.

“When you reinforce the word ‘yes’ with a reward for a dog, it tells the dog they got it right,” Murphy explains.

5. "Come"

If you're looking for dog anxiety relief tips, trying using the word "come." This recall command not only keeps dogs physically safe, but Murphy notes it also makes dogs feel emotionally secure.

"For many overwhelmed dogs, hearing 'come' from a trusted owner means reconnecting with the person who provides guidance and security," Murphy says. "It creates a clear path forward when a dog may be feeling unsure about what to do next."

6. "Let's play!"

Sometimes words and phrases can distract your dog from whatever makes them feel uneasy. That's where terms like "let's play" come in handy.

"Engagement has a remarkable ability to change a dog's emotional state and improve your relationship with your dog," Murphy explains. "It encourages movement, engagement, curiosity and connection. When a dog is capable of playing, it's often a sign that they feel safe enough to relax and enjoy the moment."

7. "Treat?

When it comes to reassuring words for dogs, this is one dogs love hearing. "Most dogs quickly develop positive associations with the word 'treat' because of what consistently follows it," Murphy notes. "The anticipation alone is enough to brighten many dogs' moods—and their owners'."

8. "Let's go!"

If you need an idea to help with dog anxiety relief that can encourage your furry sidekick to be more relaxed, try saying "Let's go!"

This phrase is especially good to say outloud to your stressed pup because it lets them know they're not being left behind. What pup wouldn't feel more okay after hearing it? "Dogs are comforted by leadership, and this phrase communicates direction and purpose, and usually something fun," Murphy shares.

Tones That Make Dogs Feel Calm

While words can help dogs feel like everything is okay, so does tone.

"Dogs pay far more attention to how we say something than the actual word itself," Murphy says. "A calm, confident tone communicates stability, while a frantic or emotional tone can accidentally signal that something is wrong."

Murphy recommends speaking clearly, calmly and naturally to help a dog feel safe. "Many pet parents make the mistake of using a high-pitched, worried voice when their dog is nervous," Murphy adds. "While it's well-intentioned, it can sometimes reinforce the idea that there is something to be concerned about."

A Mourning Dove Family Set up Home in This Flower Box Rent-Free—and They're the Sweetest Tenants Ever

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 6:00am

People spend a lot of money trying to attract birds to their yards.

Meanwhile, Mourning Doves just move in and act like they've signed a lease.

One lucky homeowner recently discovered they had some very adorable new tenants, and honestly, I'd probably start referring to the flower box as "the nursery" immediately.

@fredcastillo957

♬ Baby bird - Miguel Pérez

TikTok user @fredcastillo957 shared the sweet clip, which shows an adorable pair of Mourning Doves snuggled together with their tiny babies inside a flower box nest.

The whole bird family looks like they posed for an official holiday card. The parents are cuddled up side by side while the fuzzy little chicks peek out from underneath them, creating enough cuteness to temporarily cure all my problems.

Related: Cockatiel's Unlikely Friendship With a Pair of Guinea Pigs Is Melting Hearts Everywhere

And can we talk about Mourning Dove nests for a second? These birds are famous for gathering approximately three sticks, a leaf, and positive thinking, and somehow deciding, "Yep. That's a house."

Honestly, I respect the confidence.

The comments section was filled with fellow Mourning Dove fans.

"I love Mourning Dove nests. They find like 3 sticks and a piece of chewing gum and call it good," one person joked.

"The way these doves cuddle together is too precious," another viewer wrote.

"Mourning Doves are such beautiful, sweet birds that make such soothing sounds. What a beautiful family," someone else commented.

Another person pointed out, "They literally posed for a family photo."

One experienced bird lover shared an important reminder: The babies would likely leave the nest soon and may spend time hiding under nearby bushes while learning to fly.

As someone who spends way too much time watching birds in my yard, I completely understand becoming emotionally invested in a family you've never technically met.

Fun Facts About Mourning Doves

Mourning Doves are one of the most common birds in North America and are known for their soft cooing sounds, which many people find calming and peaceful.

Despite their sometimes questionable construction skills, Mourning Doves are devoted parents. Both Mom and Dad help incubate eggs and care for the babies after they hatch.

Baby Mourning Doves grow surprisingly quickly and usually leave the nest about two weeks after hatching, although they often remain nearby while continuing to learn important survival skills.

And yes, their nests really are famously terrible.

Bird people lovingly joke that Mourning Doves build homes with the enthusiasm of college students assembling furniture without reading the instructions.

Yet somehow, it works.

Which honestly feels like a life lesson.

7 Cat Breeds That Thrive in Warm, Sunny Weather, According to Vets

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 5:10am

If you’ve always dreamed of becoming a pet parent and having a cat of your own, you’ve probably imagined their personality, quirks and the quiet companionship they’ll bring into your life. But one important factor that often gets overlooked is how well a cat will actually adapt to the environment you live in. After all, not all cats handle hot weather in the same way.

Some cats are naturally better suited for higher temperatures and love to sunbathe thanks to their shorter coats, leaner builds, and ancestry linked to hotter regions. So if you live somewhere where the sun is always shining and the days are hot, or you want a cat that can adapt more easily to different weather, it’s worth knowing which furry companions are the best cats for hot climates.

From adorable hairless cats to designer cats, to active felines that enjoy the outdoors, here are seven cat breeds that thrive in warm climates, according to veterinarians, and what makes them especially well-suited to higher temperatures. You may be surprised which ones experts recommend!

7 Best Cat Breeds for Warm Climates

While all cats need protection from extreme heat, these felines tend to be more comfortable in higher temperatures.

If you're wondering what the best cat breeds for warm climates are, don't forget about Siamese cats! These cute felines tend to adapt well to warmer weather thanks to their short, fine coats and naturally athletic build, which doesn’t trap heat the way heavier-coated breeds can.

“They still need protection from intense heat, but their coat doesn’t trap warmth the way a dense double coat can,” says veterinarian Dr. Sarah Wooten.

Beyond their heat tolerance, these sun-loving cats are highly social, intelligent, and energetic, meaning they do best in homes that offer plenty of stimulation. Interactive toys and climbing spaces can also help keep these energetic cats happy indoors when temperatures soar.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, social
  • Weight: 5-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10-20 years
Tonkinese Tonkinese cats are surprisingly well-suited to heat.

Of all the warm weather cats that vets recommend, Tonkinese are one of the most beloved. These pretty designer cat breeds combine the social nature of the Siamese with a short, manageable coat that can help them stay comfortable in warm weather. In fact, their silky “mink” fur lacks the heavy insulation required for life in colder climates, which is why they’re a popular choice among pet owners in warmer regions.

“They often enjoy being near their people and may seek out sunny resting places,” Wooten poits out. “Though, like all cats, they need access to cooler rooms, fresh water and shade so they can regulate their comfort safely.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, adaptable, outgoing
  • Weight: 6-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10-16+ years
Oriental Shorthair Oriental Shorthairs like to sunbathe and are great warm-weather pets.

Getty Images benlankamp

What cats thrive in heat? With their sleek coats and slender bodies, Oriental Shorthairs are another breed that tends to handle heat well.

“They typically tolerate warmth better than heavily-coated breeds, but they shouldn’t be left to manage extreme heat on their own,” Wooten explains.

In warmer regions, a comfortable indoor environment with air conditioning, toys and plenty of social time can help these affectionate cats stay active without overheating.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, elegant
  • Weight: 5-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10–20 years
Sphynx These cats tend to thrive when temperatures rise.

Getty Images Johnce

When it comes to cats that like warm weather, Sphynx are one of them as they usually get old easily. n fact, they are cats often associated with warm climates due to their lack of fur since they don’t have the insulating coat most cats rely on to regulate their temperature.

However, since they lack a protective coat, if you get a Sphynx cat you'll need to make sure you help protect their skin as it requires extra care.

“Their exposed skin can sunburn," Wooten reveals, adding that dressing them in sun-protective clothing, having UV-blocking window protection and applying vet-approved sunscreen can all help them be comfortable and stay safe.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Loyal, affectionate
  • Weight: 6-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 7–15 years

Domestic Shorthairs are often a practical choice for warmer climates thanks to their adaptability and generally low-maintenance coats. As a mixed-breed category rather than a single defined breed, their coat thickness, build, and heat tolerance can vary from cat to cat.

“A healthy, short-coated cat may do well in a sunny climate as long as the home provides shade, water and indoor cooling,” Wooten explains.

Because of their natural versatility, these cute cats tend to adjust well to a wide range of environments, including warmer regions. Still, like all cats, they rely on access to cool indoor spaces and proper care to stay comfortable and safe when temperatures rise.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Friendly, adaptable, intelligent
  • Weight: 6–16 pouds
  • Lifespan: 12–16 years
Abyssinian An Abyssinian loving the sunshine.

If you live in a warm climate, the Abyssinian’s sleek coat and active, adaptable nature make them an especially good match. Their short, silky fur doesn’t trap heat the way denser coats can, and their lean, athletic build helps them stay comfortable in higher temperatures.

“They are playful, curious cats that often enjoy sunny spots, but they still need safe ways to cool down,” Wooten states.

Because Abyssinians are highly energetic and love to explore, they do best in environments that balance stimulation with heat safety. Fresh water, shaded areas, and cool indoor spaces are essential, especially during the hottest parts of the day, along with indoor play to help them stay active without overheating.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Devoted, athletic, alert
  • Weight: 6-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 14-17 years
Egyptian Mau Some cats simply feel more at home in warmer places.

Getty Images Lisa Beattie

Do cats like hot weather? The Egyptian Mau does. In fact, its short coat and athletic build makes it a great companion in warmer regions.

“Their body type is generally better suited to warmth than cold, damp conditions,” Wooten explains.

Known for their speed and energy, Egyptian Maus love climbing trees, interactive toys and dedicated play sessions. During periods of intense temperatures, cool resting spots and indoor exercise opportunities become especially important for these heat-loving cat breeds.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Intelligent, playful, devoted
  • Weight: 6-14 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12-15 years
Keeping Cats Safe in Hot Weather

While these breeds may be better suited to warm weather than most heavily coated cats, veterinarians say no cat is completely protected from the dangers of excessive heat. “White, hairless, senior, overweight, brachycephalic and medically fragile cats are especially vulnerable to heat stress or sunburn,” Wooten says. Though, no matter what kind of cat you have, all cats should have access to cool indoor spaces, fresh water, shaded resting areas, and limited exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day.

This Maine Coon Cat Is So Massive, He's Almost As Big As His German Shepherd Sibling

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 4:42am

There's a German Shepherd and there's a Goldendoodle. Both are fully grown, both are bigger than your average cat by quite a bit and both are quietly getting shown up by a kitten who isn't even done growing yet.

The TikTok from @sovereignmainecoons sums up the situation perfectly. The transcript says it all: "Two full size dogs and a Maine Coon that's not even fully grown yet. A German Shepherd and a Goldendoodle. Why are you so big? Why are you so majestic?"

The kitten just sits there with his huge paws, long tail and a totally chill vibe. Completely nonchalant. The German Shepherd suspiciously keeps an eye on him. The Goldendoodle does his usual friendly, unbothered thing. And the Maine Coon, even though he's technically the baby here, acts like he's the king and the dogs are peasants.

@sovereignmainecoons

#mainecoon #catsoftiktok

♬ original sound - SovereignMaineCoons

The comments knew exactly what was going on:

"Cat just sitting there mogging 😂"

"Why do Maine Coons always have that mogging face 😭"

"Maine Coons are just big for fun. I swear because why are you as cute as a kitty cat but that big?"

"Why does he look like Ron Perlman?"

"Dudes a Chad"

And the final verdict: "That Maine Coon is the alpha alright"

It appeared several times in the comments, so what does "mogging" actually mean? According to Merriam-Webster, it's internet slang for straight up outdoing someone, basically looking or doing better than the people around you. It's all over TikTok, Instagram and Reddit these days. The word actually goes back to an early 2000s term, "AMOG," short for "Alpha Male of the Group." Now, Gen Z and Gen Alpha use it for pretty much anything, from a strong jawline to being the tallest person in the room.

In this case, the people getting mogged are two full-grown dogs by a super-sized kitten.

And here's the part that should really worry those dogs: this kitten isn't done growing. Not even close.

How Big Can Maine Coons Get?

Here's the thing about Maine Coons. Most cats are basically full-grown within a year or two. Not these guys. According to Healthy Pet, Maine Coons can keep growing until they're 3 to 5 years old.

Related: Cat Breed Ranked No. 1 'Best for Seniors' Is the Ultimate Gentle Giant

Once they're fully grown, males usually end up somewhere between 13 and 18 pounds, and females come in even smaller at 8 to 12 pounds. But honestly, weight isn't even the craziest part. It's their length. From nose to tail, a Maine Coon can stretch anywhere from 18 to 40 inches, with males usually outsizing females thanks to those big furry tails. At the shoulder they stand 10 to 16 inches tall, and if they get up on their hind legs, they can hit 16 inches.

Compared to other big cat breeds like Ragdolls, Savannahs and Norwegian Forest Cats, Maine Coons really stand out for that length.

So this kitten, already holding his own next to two fully-grown dogs, still has several years left to grow into himself.

The German Shepherd and the Goldendoodle might want to get used to the new hierarchy now because it's only going to get more obvious from here.

Maine Coon Meets His New Foster Son, and His Loving 'Nom-Nom' Sounds Say It All

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 1:07am

Dexter, Luna, and Casper make up the main characters on the social media account @the_maine_coonies_. The human behind the account not only shares her trio of cats, but also the fosters they take care of as a family. Dexter, a gorgeous Maine Coon, recently bonded with a tiny, baby foster kitten, and the video is next level.

Dexter is so gentle with the precious kitten, and even goes so far as to groom the little one so tenderly and affectionately. His purrs are adorable, and the entire interaction is one you don't want to miss.

@the_maine_coonies_

he’s over it #mainecoon #mainecooncat #mainecoonsoftiktok #mainecoon #kitten

♬ original sound - the_maine_coonies_

"Daddy" Dexter is clearly great with foster kittens, and his little pushes and murmurs show off his nurturing nature. The kitten tolerates it as much as they can, and they're ultimately a great sport about being, well, daddy-ed by Dexter.

Why Some Cats Take Naturally to Foster Kittens

Cats who take naturally to fosters are ones who have a deeply ingrained maternal (or in Dexter's case, paternal) instinct. Grown cats can often recognize how fragile and vulnerable kittens are, and given their very social nature they'll be inclined to step in to care for them. This instinct overrides any sort of territorial behavior and makes way for the foster kitten to be cared for instead.

For adult cats, they can also view baby cats as more companions who pose little to no threat, making them more inclined to take them in, in a sense. This sense of mentorship and hierarchy makes them interested in being a step in parent to continue to maintain their dominance, and the pack sense in the home.

On top of all of this, most cats also often have a "litter" mentality about them. This means that they're naturally drawn to taking care of the entire litter, regardless of actual paternity or maternity. Cats will nurse kittens that aren't their own, and look out for the vulnerable ones they see. This is a survival technique that has lasted for generations.

All of this to say, Dexter is somewhat biologically made to be a good foster dad. It's touching to see him step (or push and nom-nom) his way into a role he was born for.

Do Fish Recognize People?

While many people downplay fish from an emotional and intellectual standpoint, fish have much more awareness than we might even know. Research suggests that fish absolutely recognize people and can tell the difference between their caretakers and strangers. Through things like visual recognition, observation, routine, habits, and learned conditioning, lead to fish being able to recognize different people.

Although the enthusiasm is often very driven by things like food, fish also do experience excitement when they see people they recognize. Fish are much more intelligent than they're given credit for, and learn to associate faces, voices, and other patterns with the people in their lives. Fish are also social creatures, so all of this is supported by that simple fact.

Fish lovers deserve some love, too! Find an aquatic fanatic in your life and give this DIY a shot.

This Persian Cat's Neon Gold Eyes Look Like Two Tiny Suns, and We Can't Look Away

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 7:55pm

Cats can have a few different eye colors, and depending on their breed, some shades are more common than others. A select few felines have the kind of peepers that literally stop you in your tracks, absolutely gobsmacked!

For Beverly, the Persian cat, this means having hypnotic golden neon eyes that could easily rival the sun itself!

Persian cat Beverly's gorgeous, sunshine-inspired gaze is truly something special. There are kitties with yellow or copper eyes, but Beverly's added glow resembles two galaxies beaming from light-years away, and we couldn't be more awestruck.

One look in Bev's lemony stare could cure any weekday blues. They might even be the gold at the end of the rainbow we're all searching for. What a stunner!

As one of two near-identical Persian cats in the house, Beverly's black-and-white coat mixed with those pumpkin-tinged eyes surely means she's the unofficial queen of Halloween, right?

Brother Bruce is a close second, but it's hard to tell them apart. They have matching coat markings, eye colors, and sass like any close kitty sibling duo! And to be fair, BOTH are purrfect!

♬ original sound - Ian Asher What Are the Rarest Persian Cat Eye Colors?

Of the different eye colors adult cats have, the rarest in Persian kitties is an emerald green, typically found in golden or silver Persians. The deep, solid green isn't the norm for this breed, so if you spot one with dazzling green eyes, consider yourself lucky!

Some cats have heterochromia, which is when the white-spotting gene changes pigmentation. The result is one blue eye, and the other eye is usually orange or copper. Though this condition is more often seen in all-white cats, it's rare in Persian kitties.

The bold, blue-eyed babes are almost always white, though the color is common in Himalayan Persians. The bright copper gaze like Beverly's is the most common for solid-colored cats, but only the really special felines get that added "neon" hue that's sure to mesmerize anyone in their path. Her golden eyes are striking, to say the least!

If there's only one winner for the cat world's most otherworldly peepers, Beverly not only wins on this planet, but all the others in the great big sky!

Things like watching them chew up your favorite shoes or how they bond with a stuffed toy they refuse to let go of are a few universal dog-family experiences. And another is all the time spent on walks and the interesting situations you encounter along the way.

In this video, we meet a Golden Retriever puppy who loves walk time with the family, and in a throwback video, we get to see how much fun he has just rolling around in the grass. Take a look at this cutie!

Shared by TikTok user @marvin.the.golden, the video shows Marvin, a very beautiful Golden Retriever, who looks to be having the absolute time of his life while out for a walk with his mom. It's a throwback video, since Marvin's a little older now and not technically a puppy, but if you have a dog, you've probably seen your pup do the same thing at any age.

Marvin comes across a patch of grass that, for whatever reason, grabs his attention and makes him so happy that he has no other response to it other than to flop on the ground and start rolling. Whatever he smells there, he wants it all over his fur. Or maybe he's found the perfect patch of grass and weeds to scratch and itch he has in a spot he's not been able to reach.

Whatever the reason, watching Marvin have the best time just rolling all over the grass while his tail wags and his tongue hangs out is 100% pure joy. And it's a great clip to watch if you need a little more of that happiness in your day.

In other videos of sweet Marvin, the Golden Retriever, we can see this little dude really does have an adorable journey and lots of fun with his family. He's a typical puppy who loves to bring slippers to his mom so she'll wake up, he joins his mom for walks at sunset and takes in all the sights and smells with a smile, and he loves to have splash time in the water while retrieving Frisbees and showing off his skills.

Why Dogs Love Rolling in Grass, According to Experts

Marvin is having the time of his life rolling around in the grass, almost like he's obsessed or trying to scratch an itch that he just can't reach. But according to experts, there are other reasons why your pup might be doing the same thing Marvin's doing when you go out for a walk.

According to PetMD, a dog rolling around in the grass is perfectly normal for these silly pups. Sure, scratching an itch could be one reason they're choosing to roll around, but there are a few other reasons, too.

Sometimes, dogs roll in the grass or dirt to help mask their scent, which is something their ancestors would have done with more actual need than dogs today. Doing this can help them pick up another animal's scent, but they also do it to cover up their own scent.

But sometimes, pups just do this because it feels good or they're happy and having a good time, PetMD notes. Rolling around in the grass can feel like a little massage, and when they're out running off their energy and flooded with happiness, this is just like a little cherry on top.
