Golden Retriever Gets Freshly Groomed and Feels Totally Betrayed

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 7:20pm

Sometimes looking good isn't enough to make you feel good. That's definitely the case with Zebby, the funny Golden Retriever. Though the freshly coiffed canine appears as clean and put-together as possible, he seems to be feeling rather glum.

In a hilarious dog video on TikTok, we meet Zebby, who looks so dapper in a blue bandana. But we're guessing the groomer wasn't on Zebby's agenda for the day, and now he refuses to hide his feelings of betrayal. Take a look at this Golden Retriever after grooming, who deserves an Oscar for this performance.

@zebbythegolden

He said I don't wanna be handsome ☹️☹️☹️ #goldenretriever #dogsoftiktok #funnydogs #goldensoftiktok #dog

♬ original sound - Zebby The Golden Retriever

"My dramatic Golden Retriever after the groomer," Zebby's family writes.

While his fur might be billowing in the breeze, he's not enjoying a minute of it. Aw, poor pup. He's got that pout down pat for sure.

We're wondering if maybe when Zebby got in the car, he had visions of frolicking in the dog park or perhaps picking up a pup cup. A visit to the groomer was probably the last place he wanted to go. Or, second to last, more likely. A trip to the vet is no doubt the least favorite for pets.

Viewers could feel Zebby's annoyance through their screens.

"He said I’m handsome, but I’m not happy," one person said.

“You have no idea what I just went through 😠😔," another imagined Zebby's inner monologue.

"He's like, 'Don't talk to me,'" a third person joked.

But is it a joke? Look how Zebby leans against the seat as if to say, "This was all too much for me! I'm gonna need a minute."

Zebby's reaction isn't uncommon.

"The silent treatment the whole way home. Every time😭," another pet parent wrote.

Why Grooming Is Stressful for Some Dogs

While some humans may enjoy a trip to the salon, most dogs dread it. Why?

For many pups, a visit to the groomer can spark feelings of sensory overload. The office is a different environment, one that's typically filled with plenty of scents and other (sometimes anxious) pups. If they've had an unpleasant experience in the past, chances are, they remember it and don't want to be there.

Dogs may also have separation anxiety as parents leave them with someone they don't know too well.

Choosing the right groomer can make all the difference. You can also pair a trip to the groomer with something your dog does enjoy, like a treat or a trip to the park.

We hope Zebby can put this behind him and begin to feel as good as he looks!

Cat Finds Catnip Section at Home Depot and Immediately Makes Himself at Home

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 6:55pm

A trip through the garden center is supposed to be calm. Maybe you pick up a plant, or maybe you think about becoming the kind of person who keeps things alive. What you don't expect is to lock eyes with a Tabby cat who has already made that decision for you and is fully committed to living inside the catnip display.

That's exactly what happens when a shopper takes a casual walk through Home Depot that turns into a moment that feels less like shopping and more like discovering a very dedicated employee.

@gabrielle.john

@The Home Depot Is this considered quality control or theft?! 🤣 #gardeningtiktok #catsoftiktok #viralvideo #funnyanimalvideos

♬ som original - 𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑜.

TikTok user @gabrielle.john shared the adorable clip, and right there in the middle of the garden center, a Tabby cat is stretched out in a pot of catnip like he personally stocked it, tested it, and approved it for public sale. Completely relaxed. Completely unbothered. The caption asks, “Is this considered quality control or theft?” and honestly, that feels like a corporate question we're not qualified to answer.

Related: Calico Cat With Special Needs Has the Sweetest, Silliest Smile

People in the comments immediately understood the assignment. “That’s how you know the product is good,” one person wrote, which feels like the most effective marketing strategy I have ever seen. Another added, “It’s so rude to film an employee just doing their job,” which is correct; he is clearly busy.

“I didn’t know catnip actually grew cats,” someone joked, while another said, “It was just nip before he showed up,” which is so stupid and so funny at the same time. And then there was, “He’s the distributor,” followed by “Product ambassador,” which honestly might need to be printed on a tiny badge and pinned to him immediately.

One of my favorites was, “I love that we didn’t need the picture of the cat enjoying catnip on the label because we had the real thing,” because yes. Why bother with packaging when you can just have a live demonstration right there in the plant?

I keep thinking about bringing this home to Meatball, Tarkus, and Elvis, my three kitties, but then I realize the plant would last approximately 3 minutes. Maybe 2. Meatball would simply sit in it and claim it as real estate, which feels spiritually aligned with what this cat is doing in the store.

Catnip is actually one of the easiest herbs to grow, which is great news if you're thinking about giving your cats their own version of this exact moment. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and it can grow in garden beds or containers.

You can start catnip from seeds or small starter plants. Once established, it grows quickly and can tolerate a bit of neglect, which makes it perfect for beginners. Regular trimming will help keep it bushy and encourage new growth.

I recently started gardening, and this weekend I am planning to grow catnip for my three cats. It feels like a very reasonable decision. I'm sure it will go great. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

4 Birth Dates Linked to Owl-Like Wisdom and Old Souls

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 4:10pm

No matter where you live in the world, being compared to an owl is usually a compliment and is a way of saying someone is wise and has an old soul. But not everyone naturally embodies these traits. If you’ve ever been told you seem older than your years or possess a quiet, intuitive understanding of life, there's a reason why you could be one of the few who carry this timeless, insightful energy. In fact, expert numerologists and astrologers, say there are four birth dates that are strongly linked to owl-like wisdom and old souls.

"Across ancient civilizations from South Asia to Western Europe, owls have traditionally been symbols of wisdom," explains Rachel Ruth Tate, a professional astrologer. "Owls can rotate their heads a full 270 degrees, giving people with owl-like wisdom an almost superhuman perspective of the world around them." In fact, these people can seem as if they have experienced life before. Because of this, people with old-soul wisdom unconsciously tap into lessons they learned not just in this lifetime, but prior incarnations. It gives them a full-circle perspective that affects their relationships and how they approach life.

If you're curious if you are one of the lucky people who have this trait, keep reading. According to Tate, there are specific birth dates throughout the year that reflect old soulwisdom. Below, Tate uses numerology and astrology to help you connect the dots.

If you're an animal lover, pet parent or fan of astrology, you may wonder how you can tell if you have old soul wisdom like an owl. As you scroll along to see the birth date that reflect old-soul wisdom, you'll want to focus on the numerical date of your birthday. Disregard the birth months and the year—they don't count for this one. See which dates are drawing on past incarnations to shape their worldview and actions based on the teachings of astrology and numerology.

Born on the 1st

People born on the first day of the month are ruled by the Sun. They naturally break new ground simply by being born into this lifetime.

"If you were born on the 1st, like the owl, you are meant to be a pioneer and visionary," Tate explains. "You are destined to find frontiers and lead others to new lands."

Tate says numerology tells us that people born on the 1st are "uniquely mature and self-aware."

"Your very being expresses possibility and forward-moving potential," Tate says. "The forefront is where you belong."

Born on the 20th

Tate says that people born on the 20th are primarily ruled by the Moon and serve as a "bridge between worlds," making this another birth date that is wise beyond their years.

"Twentieth natives begin seasons—like the Vernal Equinox on March 20th—and end zodiac signs," Tate explains. "You are meant to connect and unite disparate forces. The cusp is where you feel most alive."

Additionally, Tate reports that numerology invites people to understand that individuals born on the 20th are highly sensitive and attuned to the needs of others. "You empathize and unify wherever you go, and, like the owl, your path may be one that crosses numerous thresholds," Tate notes.

Born on the 22nd

Tate reveals that people born on the 22nd of the month are ruled by the planetUranus and "born to build" and provide boundless value to their communities.

"You are fated to initiate and consecrate the sacred partnerships that provide your strong foundation," Tate shares. "Numerology says that you are both extremely creative and highly collaborative. The social infrastructure you build around you holds us all up."

As with people born on the 20th, Tate explains that 22nd natives also bridge gaps between zodiac signs. They provide sturdy support for mutual efforts.

Born on the 27th

The 27th is another birth date that reflects owl-like old-soul wisdom, and people born on this day are "natural diplomats" as they are ruled by Mars. "You are an effortless advocate for who and what you love," Tate notes. "Numerology tells us that you were born to balance and intuit."

Tate says people born on the 27th understand what makes for a well-composed life, and they choose companions accordingly. "Twenty-seventh are engaged and passionate people who tend to dive a little bit deeper than the rest of us, like the owl," Tate says.

Senior Golden Retriever’s Moment With Her 'Last Baby' Is Bringing People to Tears

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:07pm

Some dogs are just built different. Sadie the Golden Retriever is one of those dogs.

A sweet TikTok from@abraham_stewart_piggies tells the story of a Golden Retriever who earned the nickname "Mama Bear" by doing exactly what the name suggests—raising babies. Not just her own puppies but also, five human babies across two generations of a family.

The caption reads: "Sadie, Mama Bear, has raised 5 human babies. She's my sister's dog but has been there from the start raising my son with me, then all of her children, now Mack. And Mack sure loves her. Time is a thief. We love you Sadie girl💛"

The text overlay is what gets you: "Mama bear loving on her last human baby for the last time."

♬ Over the Rainbow - christmastiktoksss

The video shows a senior Sadie gently engaging with Mack, the youngest of the five babies that she's helped raise. Sure, her movements are slower now, her face grayer, but the gentleness is still there. The protective instinct and the bond remain.

The comments captured what everyone was feeling:

"She had such a good life, and loved so many."

"Forever a good dog 🌹"

Sadie started at first with the TikTok account owner's son. Then, she helped raise all of her sister's children. Now, there's Mack—baby number five. And judging by the "last time" language and Sadie's age, this is likely one of her final chapters.

Why Dogs Form Strong Bonds With Babies

What Sadie has done in her family across five babies isn't just sweet—it's rooted in how dogs are wired socially and emotionally.

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs are very social creatures with strong pack drives. Alexandra Bassett, lead dog trainer and behaviorist at Dog Savvy Los Angeles, explains: "All dogs have a mating drive and den instincts; it's part of what's called their 'pack drive.' When a dog has a strong pack drive and is tightly bonded with his family, it's only natural that he becomes protective of a new baby when he or she arrives."

Related: Retriever Dad Says 'Walk' 10 Times—Dog Becomes a Literal Kangaroo

Dogs form strong connections with babies because of the amount of time they spend together and because both babies and young dogs share a common desire for a playmate and attention. Dogs can also sense that babies are vulnerable and harmless—you might see them sniff or lick a baby's face, which is how mother dogs check on their own puppies. This is instinctual.

Research shows that babies who grow up with dogs are less likely to develop certain allergies and usually have more resilient immune systems. Interacting with dogs also raises levels of serotonin and dopamine—the chemical building blocks of positive feelings.

For Sadie, that protective, nurturing instinct extended across five babies and multiple years. She became part of the family infrastructure—the constant presence as children grew, the gentle guardian watching over each new arrival.

Time is a thief, as the caption says. But what Sadie gave those five babies—and what they gave her—can't be stolen. That bond remains forever.

Good girl, Sadie. Forever a good dog.

Ultra-Rare Silver Kittens Worth $20k Are the Most Gorgeous Jewelry Inspiration

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 12:20pm

With so many exotic cats in the world, it's mathematically impossible to have seen them all—especially the rare breeds. I've only recently stumbled upon some really cool kitties with the most stunning silver and onyx polka-dot coloring that deserves a spot in the antique armoire. As it turns out, this Savannah kitten isn't only gorgeous, but also worth a huge stack of cash!

This adorable silver Savannah kitten is a sight for sore eyes, and it's all thanks to good genes! When it comes to domesticated wild cats, these felines can easily be mistaken for your everyday Tabby cat if you don't know what to look for.

Generally, Savannah felines are larger than standard cats with long legs, tall ears, and recognizable "black teardrop" eye markings, where Tabbies (which is a fur pattern, not a breed) have a trademark "M" on their foreheads and tiger stripes.

♬ original sound - ✨Walter the Catt✨ How Rare Are Silver Savannah Cats?

These beautiful, exotic-breed cats aren't only aesthetically pleasing, but their rarity comes from being so highly sought after yet hard to find. This is dependent on their generation, which ranges from F1, which is when a wild African Serval breeds with a domestic cat, to F5, who are considered more manageable and better suited for life with a family.

High-generation silver cats, especially F1 kittens, are extremely rare and difficult to breed. Silver is caused by an inhibitor gene (that's a lack of color) and isn't a default color like brown-spotted kitties, and they need at least one silver parent to make that pretty coloring, which only adds to their rarity. Some kittens are even born with matching silver eyes!

Being so uncommon, some of the F1 and F2 silver Savannah cats sell for between $10,000 and $23,000! For that much money, I sure hope these kitties are treasured beyond belief!

The One Subtle Eye Change Vets Say Most Dog Owners Miss Until It's Too Late

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 11:50am

Our dogs are the most beloved members of our families. They travel with us all over, heading to places like the dog parkwineries, the beach and on road trips. So, of course, we keep a close eye on their health as if they were our own kids. Seeing their sweet faces is the highlight of our days, especially when we get to gaze into their loving eyes, which reflect love right back. But when you notice something else reflecting in their eyes, it can be quite alarming. You may even begin to wonder how long they've been like that and if you have been missing something serious.

But, before you give in to those feelings of dread, be reassured that sometimes there is a harmless explanation for why you may be seeing a difference in your pup's eyes. In fact, there are many reasons why you may see a different color or a haze over your dog's pupils. Some of those are completely harmless, while others need an immediate trip to your veterinarian. Here's a look at some of the reasons why your dog could have some cloudiness over their pupils, what you need to do about it and when you should head to your veterinarian's office.

What Is the Subtle Eye Change Vets Warn About?

k_non78 / Shutterstock.com

While you may feel like you gaze into your pup's eyes at least once a day, their eye health is one thing you do need to keep track of. One subtle eye change that can happen quickly is a slight haze or cloudiness appearing over their pupils. It's much easier to notice things like scratching or limping, but eye changes can easily go unnoticed, even with perfect care. Whether it is something to worry about can depend on a few factors.

Age can bring on certain normal ocular changes, while some dog breeds can be more susceptible to diseases. While you always want to get any changes checked out by your vet, you can do a quick at-home assessment before making your appointment, which can be helpful for your vet and your mental load. Your dog's overall disposition can give you some insight into how serious their condition may be. Check if they are still eating, having normal bowel movements or still active. If they are lethargic, itching their faces, shaking their heads or have a lot of eye discharge, the situation may be more serious, which is important to relay to their doctor. This information, along with an examination, can help them determine what is going on.

What Conditions Could This Signal?

Gorodenkoff / Shutterstock.com

The haziness over their pupils can mean multiple different things. One is generally harmless and comes on with age, while the others are far more serious diseases. Nuclear sclerosis is one of those diseases that can develop as our beloved pups age. According to Dr. Iryna Smyrnova, DVM, with Meowff, the condition will "gradually appear throughout the pet's life as a cloudy or milky blue color in the middle of their eyes," especially in older dogs.

"Owners have described it as 'the eyes being foggy'; however, this differs greatly from a cataract in that the "cloudy" area is much more evenly distributed throughout both pupils and doesn't significantly impair the dog's ability to move about its environment," Smyrnova shares. She adds that you may notice that your pup hesitates when moving into an area of the house without the lights on. But overall, they will remain unencumbered by the condition.

In sharp contrast, cataracts and glaucoma can cause cloudiness in both of your dog's eyes, leading to serious issues. Cataracts can be genetic or brought on by diabetes mellitus. According to a National Institute of Health study, 75 to 80 percent of dogs with diabetes develop cataracts within 12 to 16 months of their diagnosis. About 50 percent develop cataracts within six months. The condition requires treatment so that it doesn't progress into a more serious disease like glaucoma or lens-induced uveitis, which is a painful inflammation of the eye.

Glaucoma is the worst-case scenario for eye changes. It causes a buildup of pressure in the eye, leading to fluid accumulation and an eye bulge. If left untreated, the pressure can cause the optic nerve to be severed. While bulging is one of the more obvious symptoms, a white haziness over the cornea is a more subtle sign of the disease. According to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, the disease is progressive, so catching it early gives you access to a variety of treatment options.

Are Certain Breeds More at Risk?

TrapezaStudio / Shutterstock.com

Nuclear sclerosis can affect any dog, according to Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, DVM at TelaVets, as it is age-related rather than genetic. "It usually appears in dogs starting at or around middle age, 6–7 years old. Bigger breeds are a little bit quicker to show it simply because they age quicker." But it can happen to every dog. Conversely, genetics plays a role in glaucoma and cataracts.

According to UC Davis, Boston terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and French bulldogs are susceptible to early-onset juvenile cataracts, which generally occur before 3 years of age. Glaucoma can affect cocker spaniels, basset hounds, Shiba Inus, Chow Chows, Shar-Peis and Arctic breeds such as Alaskan malmutes and huskies.

Animal Eye Center of New Jersey says that dogs of all ages can develop glaucoma, but those between 5 and 9 years old are more likely to do so. In addition to age and breed, female dogs are twice as likely to develop the condition as male dogs.

When Should You Call Your Vet?

PeopleImages / Shutterstock.com

Rakestraw points out that nuclear sclerosis is fairly painless and doesn't require treatment, whereas cataracts can affect your pup's overall vision and require treatment. He recommends that you schedule an appointment for the following: "Cloudiness that comes on suddenly or worsens rapidly, seems disoriented or bumping into things. Redness, squinting, or discharge from the eye. A quick exam can easily differentiate cataracts and give you peace of mind."

Smyrnova agrees. "I recommend bringing your pet in immediately after you have observed any cloudiness in either of their eyes, regardless of how clearly they seem to be able to see," she explains. "The reason for this is the only definitive method of distinguishing whether or not your pet has developed nuclear sclerosis versus a cataract or another eye disease is a veterinary examination."

How Can You Monitor Your Dog's Eye Health at Home?

Olga_V_Ignatova / Shutterstock.com

Your dog's eye health is not something to take lightly. Unlike other conditions, symptoms can change in severity in a matter of hours rather than over a few days. If you own a dog breed that is more susceptible to eye conditions, you can give them a quick eye check-up at home with these tips from FirstVet.

Make sure you have plenty of light and check your dog's cornea for clarity. If you notice cloudiness or a blue or white tint, schedule an exam with your vet's office. If it is clear, you can move on to checking pupil size. They should be relatively the same size. If the pupils vary in size, it could be a sign of pressure and will require an immediate examination. If your pet's vision seems off, you can check it subtly by tossing a cotton ball into their field of vision. They should follow the ball with their eyes. If you notice anything concerning or have any questions, you should consult your veterinarian.

Police K-9 Dropout Was "Too Friendly" for the Force—Then a Surprise Fight Changed His Life

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 11:48am

He failed out of police training for a reason most dog parents would secretly love: he was too friendly.

For a Belgian Malinois, that's almost unheard of. These dogs are built for focus, drive and intensity. They're the ones you see locked onto a task while chaos happens around them. They can track suspects through crowds, run searches in loud warehouses and stay completely unbothered by the kind of chaos that would send most dogs sprinting for a corner.

But this one? He wanted to say hi to everybody.

The Phone Call That Started Everything

The man who eventually adopted this dog got a call from a friend who trains and evaluates dogs for police departments. The message was straightforward: one didn't pass. Did he want him?

He said yes.

As his new dad explained in a Reddit post in r/BelgianMalinois, the dog didn't have an easy road to his forever home. In fact, he moved through multiple homes before finding the right one; too much energy for one family, followed by a conflict with another dog in his second home.

After the fight with the dog in his second home that left him injured, he was looking for a new home. His future pet parent stepped in and gave him a second chance at happiness in a home suitable to his personality and needs.

Each situation revealed the same thing about this breed: Malinois don't adapt to just any home. They need the right home.

One commenter who saw the story put it simply: "Police rejects are wonderful."

Why Belgian Malinois Are the Gold Standard for Police Work

There's a reason law enforcement keeps coming back to this breed.

Belgian Malinois are fast, highly trainable and relentless when working. They don't tire easily. They don't lose focus mid-task. They bond deeply with their handler and respond to direction with a precision most breeds never develop.

That same intensity is what may make them so challenging to have in a typical household. These aren't dogs that settle after a 20-minute walk. They need structure, real training and consistent mental engagement every single day. Without it, that energy doesn't disappear. Instead, it redirects, potentially into something you'd rather it didn't.

A Malinois that washes out of police training isn't a broken dog. It's a powerful, sensitive animal that needs the right environment. That difference matters.

Related: Belgian Malinois Puppy Passed Out After Her First Day of Work and It’s a Rare Sight

What It Actually Takes to Give One of These Dogs a Life

Owning a Belgian Malinois is a daily commitment to meeting a highly capable animal where it is.

These dogs need outlets—real ones. Long runs. Training sessions. Jobs they can focus on. They need a person who understands that the same drive that made them unsuitable for police work is also what makes them extraordinary once they have the right direction.

For this dog parent, a Malinois that failed out of K-9 training isn't a consolation prize. It's a dog that's been professionally evaluated, socialized in high-stress environments and trained to a standard most family pets never reach. You're not getting a problem dog. You're getting a dog that was too enthusiastic to be professional.

As one person in the comments noted: "l am glad he found a good home, where he can thrive."

That's not a failure. That's a better outcome.

This Border Collie's Jump Rope Skills Stole the Show at Boston Celtics Game

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 11:45am

The Boston Celtics may have lost, but a Border Collie won it all after delivering an impressive jump rope routine at the NBA game's halftime show. With perfect timing and focus, the talented pup kept up with every turn, quickly winning over the crowd in the arena and stealing hearts online.

The creator of this clip states that it may have been the "best halftime show" she's ever seen, and after watching her TikTok, I tend to agree. Not only is the jumping Collie remarkable, but can we please discuss the other two dogs who are swinging the ropes?! This entire canine troupe is a delight, and I'd gladly pay the price of admission just to see them perform, no basketball required.

@Boston Celtics may have lost, but this half time show won 🍀 #celticsnation #celtics #tdgarden #tdgardenboston #celticsplayoffs

I (and the crowd) also really appreciate the use of Van Halen's Jump as the soundtrack. The performance brought "the vibes back up" after a less-than-stellar showing by the Celtics, and you can feel just how proud the dogs were to provide some much-needed energy.

One viewer commented, "How does one even go about training a dog for this skill?" and I wonder the same thing. I know that Border Collies are considered preternaturally smart, but this is some advanced stuff.

Why Border Collies Are Considered One of the Smartest Dog Breeds

Border Collie intelligence is unmatched—a combination of brainpower and eagerness to please makes them highly trainable and happiest when given a job to do. Originally developed along the border (get it?) of Scotland and England, they were bred to herd sheep and are known for their incredible focus, stamina, and signature “eye,” a powerful stare used to control livestock.

Their impressive learning capabilities include a strong memory and sense of recall. They can easily remember where objects are located and the order of numerous commands with incredible precision. They also possess incredible comprehension skills and are able to distinguish between different verbal and nonverbal signals from their handlers after only brief periods of exposure. This makes them exceptional performers, just like our friends from the jump rope video. This video explains in greater detail what makes these amazing animals so darn smart:

Collies also possess an extraordinary work ethic and a need to please their humans, which only adds to their eagerness to learn and succeed.

Overall, Border Collies stand out not just for their intelligence, but for their versatility, loyalty, and drive to work—qualities that continue to make them one of the most impressive dog breeds in the world.

Foster Pit Bull Finds Out He's Being Adopted—Then Comes the Real Surprise

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 11:20am

When a foster Pit Bull adoption story ends with a dog going to their forever home, it's such a wonderful thing.

Though there's always a bit of sadness when a rescue dog leaves a wonderful foster home where they were loved by their temporary family.

It's a bittersweet part of the foster dog journey.

But in this new viral video from @we.three.pitties, our favorite foster Pit Bull puppy, named Piglet, gets an even bigger and better surprise than just a typical foster dog adoption story.

@we.three.pitties

Happy tails to Piglet 🐷 🤎 🎉 Turns out, Piglet has always been home 🏠💗. That’s right - Pig is staying forever 🥺. Who saw this coming 👀? #fosterdog #fosterpuppy #fosteringsaveslives #happytails #pitbullpuppy

His parents really fooled us for a bit, as they weren't giving away the big reveal that they are Piglet's new forever home.

They even had some other videos about him preparing for his adoption.

They just showed him, solo, at his going-away party, eating his cake, but then, finally, at the very end, Piglet’s foster family adoption turned into the happiest ending possible when they revealed they were keeping him!

This is the type of emotional dog-adoption moment that shows why rescue dog stories resonate so strongly.

Facts About Foster-to-Adopt Cases for Dogs

According to the ASPCA program, Shelter Animals Count, 4.2 million shelter animals were adopted into homes in 2024, which matches the previous year.

This site also found that for "foster-to-adopt" cases, most achieve a 75% adoption rate compared to 56% for traditional shelters.

Shelter Animals Count also found that nearly 70% of organizations that use foster care report higher adoption rates (up to 68%) than those without foster care (around 50%).

A 2023 study by Virginia Tech and Arizona State University also found that dogs are 14 times more likely to be adopted after spending time in a foster home.

Maine Coon Waits Until I Sit Down, Then Treats Me Like a Sofa

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 10:55am

There is a very specific kind of betrayal that happens the second you finally sit down after being productive, hydrated, and generally a responsible adult. Because that's the exact moment a Maine Coon decides you are no longer a person. You are furniture. Premium furniture, honestly. Heated, rather squishy, emotionally available furniture.

And if you happen to live with a 24-pound Maine Coon named Meatball, that moment is less of a suggestion and more of a full-body experience. He doesn't care what you were doing 5 seconds ago. He doesn't care that you have a laptop open or a to-do list or a back that deserves respect. The second you sit, the contract is activated. You are now the sofa. That's me, I'm the furniture.

@meatballthemainec

He’s big mad because he wants to sit on me while I’m writing #mainecoon #mainecoonsoftiktok #orangecatbehavior

♬ モフモフは神 - aokiemi

The deal is always the same, which honestly makes it worse because I see it coming and still can't stop it. First, there's the trilling noise, which sounds so sweet and cute and polite until you realize it's actually a warning siren. Then comes the slow approach, the eye contact, the tiny pause, like he's calculating trajectory. And then he launches. Not gently. Not thoughtfully. Just 24 pounds of Maine Coon landing squarely on my chest like a weighted missile that wants to leave fur all over my clothing.

Related: Home Inspector Calls Someone Mid-Inspection After Spotting ‘Intimidatingly Large’ Maine Coon

He immediately starts making biscuits like he is clocking in for a full shift. And I mean aggressive biscuits. Industrial strength. The kind that makes you question every life choice that led you to this exact moment. Maine Coons have giant paws. My Maine Coon hates having his nails clipped. You see the issue. Meanwhile, I'm pinned, slightly out of breath, pretending this is fine. Because it is fine. It's also not fine. It's both.

There is something about the timing that feels personal. He doesn't do this when I'm cozy in bed and happy to have the company. Only when I sit. Only when I relax. It's like he has decided that stillness equals availability, and availability equals his time. Now, we have another cat, an elderly Orange Cat who weighs maybe 9 pounds and also loves lying on me. But he feels like a delicate little sack of sugar. Meatball feels like a pile of lead.

In the above video, he's lying next to me on the table instead, which feels like a compromise he's not thrilled about. You can see it in his face. Mild irritation. Quiet judgment. The energy of a giant furball who knows he deserves better seating arrangements and is waiting for me to make better choices. Which, to be clear, means sitting down so he can immediately climb on me again.

I would like to say I resist this behavior or move him off me, but I absolutely do not. There's something deeply ridiculous about being chosen this aggressively. Also slightly flattering. Also slightly painful. It's complicated. Meatball is basically a 24-pound emotional support Squishmallow who only activates when I sit down, and honestly, I have accepted my role.

Why Does My Cat Sit on My Chest Every Time I Sit Down? @drmarkwest

#cathealth #catlover #veterinarian #petwellness #usa

♬ Very Sad - Enchan

As dramatic as it feels, this is actually very normal cat behavior, especially for affectionate breeds like Maine Coons.

Cats are drawn to warmth, and your chest is basically the coziest spot in the house. Once you sit down, you’ve officially become premium real estate.

It’s also about bonding. Sitting on your chest puts them close to your face, your voice, and your scent, which helps them feel safe and connected. And as the vet says in the clip above, they can feel your heartbeat, which comforts them.

There’s also a timing element. Kitties are incredibly observant, and the moment you stop moving, they see an opportunity. Meatball is simply… efficient about it.

And yes, there’s a little bit of confidence in it, too. Not in a bad way, just in a “this is my spot now” kind of way.

So if your cat does this, you’re not alone. You’re just… occupied. You're furniture.

Fan-Favorite Pet Influencer Gets Heartwarming Surprise Fans Didn’t Expect

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 10:48am

Popular pet influencer Bryan Reisberg didn't set out to change how America adopts shelter dogs. He just didn't want to leave his corgi at home.

So he did something most people wouldn't even consider. He put his corgi, Maxine, in a special dog backpack, zipped it up so only her head peeked out and walked through New York City like it was the most normal thing in the world.

The Corgi Who Stopped New York in Its Tracks

People stared. Then they laughed. Then they pulled out their phones.

Maxine had a way of doing that, sitting in that backpack with the calm, unbothered energy of someone who owned the city. Strangers who normally walked past each other without a glance suddenly stopped, made eye contact and connected over a dog in a zip-up carrier.

Related: One Shelter’s $25 Idea Turns Into a Complete Surprise for Pet Parents

Those moments turned into videos. Those videos turned into millions of views. And Reisberg realized he was sitting on something much bigger than a funny clip.

If people would stop for his dog Maxine, what would happen if the dog peeking out of that backpack didn't have a home and people could have the potential to adopt them?

One Pitch, 28 Dogs, 200 Million Views

Last July, Reisberg walked into the Best Friends Animal Society in SoHo with a simple idea: take a shelter dog out for the day and show the world who they really are. Not under fluorescent lights with 40 other dogs barking around them, but out on the street, in the open air, being themselves.

The shelter said yes.

Nine months later, 28 dogs have been adopted as a direct result of Reisberg's videos.

The hard work that goes into these videos of shelter dogs has earned Reisberg two Webby Awards this year. However, the number that matters most is 28 for the number of dogs adopted thanks to these videos.

His content has crossed 200 million views, and the ripple effect has gone beyond individual placements at the shelter he partners with. In a post on LinkedIn, Reisberg wrote, "Adoption rates are up across the entire nationwide shelter network, and today it was announced that we won not 1, but 2 Webby Awards, which means more eyes on this program, more eyes on Best Friends, and more eyes on the dogs who need us the most."

Reisberg's post thanked everyone at the shelter and those who work tirelessly behind the scenes. In a heartfelt dedication, he wrote, "This is for every dog we've helped find their home. And for all the ones still waiting."

What Cinnamon Showed the World

If you've seen one of Reisberg's shelter videos, there's a good chance it was the one showcasing Cinnamon.

I carry shelter dogs around NYC in a dog backpack to help them get adopted. Meet Cinnamon!
by u/kittytime in aww

Cinnamon arrived at the video shoot tense, with his ears back, body low and moving the way shelter dogs move when they've learned that new environments usually mean something stressful.

Reisberg didn't rush him. He just walked, and within a few blocks, something shifted.

Cinnamon's ears came up. He started sniffing around. He looked at Reisberg the way dogs look at people they've decided to trust. By the end of the walk, he was curious, relaxed and completely himself—a version of him that nobody inside the shelter had ever seen.

The video went viral, and within days, Cinnamon had a permanent home.

Why This Works When Everything Else Doesn't

Most shelter adoption photos are taken under the worst possible conditions. Bright overhead lighting. Loud echoing kennels. A dog that's been stressed for weeks being asked to look adoptable for the camera.

What you see isn't the dog. It's the dog at their worst.

Reisberg's approach flips that completely. A walk through the city is decompression. The noise fades into the background. The dog stops scanning for threats and starts exploring. Their body language softens. Their personality surfaces. And people watching the video don't see a shelter dog—they see a companion.

It's not a marketing trick. It's just context, and the right context changes everything.

The Dog You Almost Dismissed Might Be the One

If you've ever scrolled past a shelter listing because the dog looked anxious, withdrawn or "too much," Reisberg's videos are worth watching before you make that call.

That dog you saw isn't the real dog. It's a stressed animal in an impossible situation doing their best.

Sometimes all it takes is a walk, some fresh air and someone willing to see past the nerves. Reisberg and Maxine have proven that 28 times now, and they're not done yet.

Retriever Dad Says 'Walk' 10 Times—Dog Becomes a Literal Kangaroo

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 10:39am

There's excited. There's super excited, and then there's whatever’s happening in this video.

The TikTok from @orginal_pringlesshows a golden retriever experiencing what can only be described as a complete physics meltdown. The reason? The word "walk" was said outloud. Not once. Not twice. Ten times in about 30 seconds.

"I'm gonna go for a walk. I am going to go for a walk right now. It is time to go for a walk. I have decided to go for a walk. Uh, does anybody else wanna go for a walk? Would anybody else like to go for a walk? You wanna go for a walk? You do? You wanna go for a walk real quick? We could go for a walk if you wanna go for a walk. Yeah. You wanna go for a walk? Let's go for a walk. What the hell? Alright, let's go for a walk. Okay."

By the fifth "walk," the dog is completely airborne. By the tenth time, the dog has become a full on kangaroo. Just straight-up vertical leaping. Trampoline-level bounce. Zero regard for gravity.

@orginal_pringles

Would anyone like to go for a walk?

♬ original sound - Original Pringles

The comments absolutely nailed the situation:

"Sir your kangaroo wants a walk."

"I think you have a volunteer."

"Now that's a weird ass rabbit."

Why Dogs React This Intensely to the Word "Walk"

Here's what's actually happening beyond the kangaroo impression: dogs love walks for all kinds of interconnected reasons that create the perfect storm of excitement.

According to Dogistry, walks offer dogs physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social interactions all in one shot. They get to explore their surroundings, experience new smells and sounds, engage with other dogs and people, and spend quality bonding time with their favorite family members.

Related: Kind Woman Fed Abandoned Cat Through a Door -- Then Everything Changed

When a dog hears "walk," their brain processes it as: outdoor adventure + sensory exploration + playtime + you = maximum joy unlocked. Now, multiply that reaction by hearing "walk" ten times in rapid succession. The excitement compounds. The anticipation builds. The brain chemistry goes into overdrive.

Dogs also love walks because it taps into their natural instincts. Before becoming pampered pets, dogs had to roam and search for resources to survive. Going for walks satisfies that primal urge to explore and expand their territory.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

The physical benefits are huge as well—walks help dogs release pent-up energy, strengthen muscles, maintain healthy weight, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce stress. Without regular walks, dogs can become lethargic, bored, or develop behavioral issues like chewing furniture or excessive barking.

But most importantly, walks provide psychological stimulation. Dogs encounter new sights, sounds, and smells that keep their brains engaged and bright. It's like scrolling through a fascinating feed, except it's real life and they can smell everything in the surrounding area.

So, when this golden retriever hears "walk" ten times in a row? That's ten separate dopamine hits stacking on top of each other. The result? A dog who has temporarily become a kangaroo.

Tiny Pug Protects Rottweiler Brother From Vacuum Until Things Get Too Real

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 10:10am

My dogs are both small — a Dachshund and a Pug mix — but they look out for each other. They come running if one thinks the other is in danger or needs help and it shows how devoted they are to each other.

Other canine siblings often have the same protective instinct, even when there's a large size differential. Penny the Pug is considerably smaller than her Rottweiler brother Harry, but that didn't stop her from stepping in to guard him from the mean vacuum cleaner — until she realized it wouldn't go away.

@that_pug_penny

Don’t worry Harry! I protect youz. Me been facin my vacuum fears! 🤪

♬ Austin Millz In Da Mood - Austin Millz

The vacuum cleaner was running and moving across the carpet in the TikTok from @that_pug_penny, making that loud whirring noise. Harry was lying on the rug staring at the noisy household appliance with a look of fear in his eyes. His little sister Penny stood in front of him with her paws overlapping his, guarding him from the dust-sucking beast.

The precious Pug had a determined expression on her face as if she was saying, "you won't get near my brother — not on my watch!"

Yet somewhere in the few seconds that passed, Penny seemed to lose her mojo when the vacuum got a little too close. She backed away, deserting Harry in his time of need. She probably didn't intend to abandon her fur baby brother, but her courage lasted only so long before she had to fend for herself.

Followers noted Penny's temporary bravery while pointing out her quick exit.

"'Must save brother' to 'we were never that close'," one joked.

"Don't worry, I'll protect you... from back here," another remarked.

"She was like, if it gets closer your on your own," a follower posted.

"When it came closer 'just take my brother… he's bigger',” someone commented.

Why Are Dogs Afraid of the Vacuum Cleaner?

Many canines feel anxious when they see or hear a vacuum. This fear could be caused by past negative experiences with the appliance, or if the behavior was inadvertently reinforced. Some dogs are just naturally fearful, where the loud sounds and jerky motions of a vacuum are triggering for them.

Related: Pug Siblings 'Reunited By Fate' Are the Cutest Bestie Duo We've Ever Seen

Gradual exposure to the vacuum can help them overcome this behavior. Start by showing your dog the vacuum while it's turned off. Let them sniff and inspect it several times. Reward them with treats so they can associate something positive with the vacuum.

Then try running it in very short spurts of time while praising and rewarding your dog. With time and patience, repeated and gentle exposures can be very effective in helping them develop a non-threatening relationship with this vital household cleaner.

For now, it looks like Harry and Penny are just going to steer clear of the living room when their mom has to clean.

Cat Sees an Image of Late Dog Sibling and His Reaction Is Emotional

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 9:55am

It's tragic and heartbreaking to lose a pet because they're so much more than that. And, as hard as we might grieve their absence, we might overlook how other pets are coping. For a cat named Charlie, losing his best dog friend, Gizmo, hit him hard. When Mom showed the kitty a pillow with the pup's face on it, his reaction was a real tearjerker.

Now, Mom's sobbing, fans are feeling all the emotions, and I will be ugly crying for the rest of the day.

♬ audio originale - 𝒞harlotte🪐 Do Cats Remember Other Pets? What Experts Say

Cats are incredibly smart beings whose intelligence seems to be pretty high. We already know they're great at watching and analyzing before making choices, but when it comes to grief, what do they remember?

Barri J. Morrison, DVM, tells PetMD that cats have long-term memory and short-term memory. They're capable of remembering other pets and people for years—sometimes their whole lives. Through scent and sound, they can remember littermates up to two years later, and they can grieve any who've passed—even if they don't think of them often.

Studies show that a cat's memory is connected to good and bad emotional experiences, and they may hold faces and names in some pocket of their mind. Similar to a dog's memories, a cat can recall things from kittenhood through episodic memory, helping them recall the "what" and the "where."

All of this to say that yes, Charlie remembers Gizmo, whether it's his face on a pillow, the scent of him all around, or through all the places the two spent their time together. So yeah, I'll be sobbing now, thanks!

Senior Blind Chihuahua Waits Over 100 Days for a Home—Now a Famous Foster Mom Steps In

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 7:10am

Isabel Klee has fostered over 30 dogs to date, many of whom have had physical and emotional difficulties. The animal advocate has helped many canines overcome serious challenges and find their forever homes. Now, she's going to bat for another precious pooch.

Gracie is a blind senior Chihuahua with diabetes. The little fur baby has been up for adoption for almost four months, but still hasn't gotten her new family. Klee was recently called in to lobby for the charming Chi.

@simonsits

Even though her schedule is packed with moving apartments and a book tour to promote her upcoming memoir "Dogs, Boys, and Other Things I've Cried About," Klee knew she had to make time for Gracie when Muddy Paws Rescue called her for help.

"I really was not planning on taking another foster dog for at least a couple of weeks," she said in the TikTok video from @simonsits, revealing how her friend from Muddy Paws asked for her assistance in getting Gracie a home after over 100 days of "zero adoption interest." "She is an older Chihuahua, she is blind, and she also has diabetes, so I understand why some people might be a little bit hesitant."

Despite these challenges, Klee fell in love with Gracie. She's decided to foster the pretty pup to show what a wonderful family member she would make for the right home.

The canine cutie welcomed Klee with a wag of her tail and a sweet smile, showing off her gentle disposition. The famous foster mom shared how to administer Gracie's insulin with a syringe, which the Chi received while happily having some treats. Klee couldn't wait to bring Gracie home for some much-needed snuggling.

Treatment for Diabetes in Dogs

There is no specific known cause for canine diabetes. It can afflict any dog regardless of age, breed, or health. Unspayed females, seniors, obese dogs, dogs with Cushing’s disease, or dogs with pancreatitis are at a higher risk for diabetes.

The main treatment for canine diabetes is insulin injections, usually given twice per day. While many people may be intimidated by this practice, the needles are relatively tiny and most dogs aren't bothered when they receive them.

Diabetic dogs benefit from high-fiber diets with certain levels of fat, protein, and carbohydrates to maintain optimal blood sugar levels. They sometimes require prescription food from a veterinarian.

Dogs with diabetes can live very normal, healthy lives when the right treatment is provided. Gracie is already coming out of her shell under Klee's care and showing the joy she could bring to a loving family.

Polar Bear Enjoying Ice Bath Sparks Debate About Animal Welfare

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 7:08am

A polar bear lounging in an oversized tub of icy water at the Oregon Zoo is drawing attention online for more than just its adorable behavior. While many viewers see a playful, wholesome moment, others say the video highlights ongoing concerns about how animals are kept in captivity.

In the clip, the massive bear appears relaxed and content, splashing and relishing its cold plunge — a behavior that mimics how polar bears regulate temperature in the wild. But the comments alternate between admiration and disdain, with viewers questioning whether environments such as zoos truly meet the needs of animals built to roam (in this case) vast Arctic landscapes.

@oregonzoo

polar plunge! Thank you Keeper Jill for the beary chill video 🧊 #PolarBear #ColdPlunge #asmr #animals #OregonZoo

♬ original sound - Oregon Zoo

The debate seems to kick off when someone finds the bear's compact tub "so sad." People quickly jump in to say that the bear does have much bigger pools to enjoy, and that this one is just for quick cool-downs. But the ensuing back-and-forth escalates, and viewers fire off their opinions on the pros and cons of modern zoos.

"Zoos are here for conservation and rehabilitation purposes. Not every animal [can be] released; it depends on their ability to survive alone, without assistance," asserts one supporter.

Another disagrees, "Zoos are not around for conservation and rehabilitation. Sanctuaries are. Zoos are around to exploit animals for monetary gain."

"AZA zoos are required to work towards the conservation of species in the wild," responds another, citing the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), a US-based, non-profit organization that accredits top-tier zoos and aquariums, recognized for high standards in animal care and welfare.

The conversation continues like this, line after line, with some touting the need for zoos and others calling for their banishment. But what are the facts?

Related: Penguins All Dressed Up for Chinese New Year Is Legit the Cutest Thing You'll See All Day

Should Zoos Still Exist? Taking a Closer Look at Both Sides

The debate over whether zoos should exist largely centers on animal welfare, conservation, and education.

Supporters argue that modern zoos play a critical role in protecting endangered species and educating the public. Accredited zoos contribute to conservation through breeding programs that have helped save animals like California condors and Amur leopards from extinction. They also fund scientific research and allow visitors—especially children—to form emotional connections with animals, which can increase support for conservation efforts.

Critics, however, question whether these benefits justify keeping animals in captivity. Research has shown that many zoo enclosures are too small to support natural behaviors, leading to physical health issues and higher mortality rates in some species. Others point to psychological effects, such as stress, anxiety, and repetitive behaviors, which are rarely seen in the wild. Some experts also argue that zoos may not significantly improve public understanding of conservation, especially in an age where documentaries and media can showcase animals in their natural habitats.

Ultimately, the issue remains complex, and the comments on this polar plunge video prove it. For many viewers, the clip is simply a glimpse of a powerful animal enjoying a moment of comfort. For others, it’s a reminder of a much larger conversation about how humans interact with wildlife — and the responsibility that comes with it.

7 Guard Dogs That Are Actually Gentle Giants, According to Vets

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 6:10am

It’s understandable to have mixed feelings when it comes to possibly have a guard dog in your home. While it’s always good to have your household be protected, guard dogs have a reputation for also being aggressive. However, not all guard dogs are fierce. In fact, there are some guard dogs with calm temperaments, as well as large dogs that are friendly but protective—and other watchdogs that will keep you safe without biting, simply intimidating would-be intruders with their large stature. To discover seven guard dogs that are gentle giants, according to vets, keep reding.

While most guard dogs have big builds, some were specifically bred to protect a home or livestock. These pups therefore make excellent pets and are known to be the best guard dogs for women, families and kids. The best part is, each dog has its own special qualities, giving you a wide range of personality types and energy levels to choose from if you're looking to bring one home.

Of course, every dog is an individual, making it hard to say that every pup will be a gentle giant. But a good training protocol, along with early socialization, can go a long way toward shaping your guard dog into a total sweetie and helping form a strong bond between a dog and owner. If you're curious what dogs are protective but calm, veterinarians recommend starting your search with these breeds.

7 Guard Dogs That Are Gentle Giants

If you’re looking for loyal and loving watchdogs, these large breeds prove that protection and affection can go hand in hand. Each of these gentle giant watchdogs offers a unique mix of calm temperament, family-friendly behavior and natural protective instincts.

Bullmastiff A gentle watchdog that looks fierce.

The Bullmastiff is strong and stocking, giving off the impression of a fierce protector. The reality is often very different, according to Nita Vasudevan, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “Bullmastiffs look intimidating, but a Bullmastiff's personality is calm and affectionate,” she says.

That doesn’t mean a Bullmastiff will just roll over and let an intruder come into your home, though. “They’re natural protectors, but not aggressive without reason,” Vasudevan says. "This breed tends to be pretty low-energy at home. Plus, they’re especially good with kids when properly trained and socialized." So, it's no wonder these gentle giants are considered loyal and loving watchdogs.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Loyal, affectionate, brave
  • Height: 24-27 inches
  • Weight: 110-130 lbs
  • Lifespan: 7-9 years

The Newfoundland is considered a giant dog breed due to its massive size. But this pet is a walking example that appearances can be deceiving, which explains why they are one of the best guard dogs that are good with families and one of the safest guard dogs for children. Talk about a great watchdog companion to have. “Newfoundlands are famously sweet-natured and people even often call them ‘nanny dogs’ for a reason,” Vasudevan says. While they were originally bred to be water rescue dogs, they tend to form strong attachments to their humans and will provide protection as a result.

However, when Newfies aren’t looking out for their humans, these guard dogs are just happy to hang out. “They’re patient and tolerant,” Vasudevan says. “Despite their size, they tend to be soft, sensitive dogs who do best with positive reinforcement and a calm environment.”

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Devoted, sweet, patient
  • Height: 26-28 inches
  • Weight: 100-150 pounds
  • Lifespan: 9-10 years
Great Pyrenees A family guard dog enjoying the outdoors.

When it comes to large dog breeds, the Great Pyrenees is a huge dog that can cut an intimidating figure to people who don’t know them. But this fluffy pooch is very sweet, according to vets. “Great Pyrenees are calm, independent and protective by instinct,” Vasudevan says. "However, they are considered low aggression guard dogs as this dog was originally bred to guard livestock, so they’re instinctually watchful, but not aggressive. With their family, they’re gentle and affectionate, though a little more reserved than some other breeds, so early socialization is important so their protective nature stays balanced.”

If you get one of these gentle giants, it's good to train them early. "It’s important to teach them which activities can be threatening and which, like the mailman, are completely normal," according to Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Smart, patient, calm
  • Height: 25-32 inches
  • Weight: 85-199 pounds
  • Lifespan: 10-12 years

The German Shepherd is well-known for its guard dog capabilities. “But in the right environment, it is also capable of being incredibly gentle, loyal and sensitive,” Warner says. “The protective dog breed is famous for its ability to bond with its owners and often has an inherent instinct to care for the welfare of those it loves.”

While Warner says that the German Shepherd’s protective side is real, it’s not necessarily linked with aggression. “It is more likely to be represented by loyalty, attentiveness and an intense desire to be near and around their people,” she says. "German Shepherd are also highly trainable and eager to please, which only adds to its allure. One more thing to note, is that they are very good with kids, making them one of the safest guard dogs for children."

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Courageous, confident, smart
  • Height: 22-26 inches
  • Weight: 50-90 pounds
  • Lifespan: 12–14 years

When it comes to gentle giant guard dogs, the Bernese Mountain Dog stands out as a large dog breed with a soft, affectionate personality. These watchdogs are naturally sweet and loyal, but their size alone makes them an effective family guard dog that can deter strangers.

Beyond their impressive build, Bernese Mountain Dogs have a balanced watchdog instinct—alert and observant without being overly aggressive. This makes them ideal for families looking for a protective dog with a calm temperament. They also love to be around people and will protect its favorite humans as a result. But this watchful companion isn’t all business—the Bernese Mountain Dog loves to play, too. Just keep this in mind: The Bernese Mountain Dog’s sensitive nature means this breed responds best to positive reinforcement and gentle training.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Good-natured, calm, strong
  • Height: 23-27.5 inches
  • Weight: 70-115 pounds
  • Lifespan: 7-10 years
Saint Bernard A surprisingly friendly guard dog sitting in a yard being protective.

Are guard dogs safe for families? They are! The Saint Bernard is an example as they are one of the most beloved gentle giant dog breeds known for their easygoing nature and strong protective instincts. "A Saint Bernard's temperament is loving and they are very sweet with their humans," says Warner about these gentle giants.

Originally bred for search and rescue, the Saint Bernard has evolved into a reliable watchdog that’s safe for families. Their natural awareness and protective temperament mean they’re quick to alert you to anything unusual—whether it’s real danger or just a suspicious noise nearby.

Despite their size, Saint Bernards are considered one of the best large dogs for families with children, thanks to their patience, gentleness and goofy personalities. If you’re looking for a  calm guard dog that’s both protective and affectionate, this breed is a standout choice.

Vets say Great Danes are one of the best gentle giant guard dogs thanks to their naturally protective instincts and calm temperament. While they can be wary of strangers—making them effective family guard dogs—they’re also known for being easy-going, having low-aggression and being gentle with children.

This large dog breed strikes a rare balance: protective yet relaxed in everyday life. Great Danes are playful and energetic, so regular exercise is important, but they’re equally known for being affectionate and loyal with their families. In fact, they often act like oversized lap dogs at home.

7 Signs Your Cat Is Lonely, According to a Vet

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 5:10am

As pet parents, we naturally want our cats to feel happy, secure and comfortable at home. But even indoor cats can experience loneliness, and it’s not always easy to recognize the subtle changes in their behavior. Because cats are often independent by nature, their emotional needs can sometimes go unnoticed or be misunderstood. So if you've ever wondered how you can tell if your cat is feeling lonely, you're not alone. A lot of cat owners struggle with that, especially since some breeds are more independent than others. However, experts say there are ways to tell through cat body language and cat behaviors. To reveal some you should watch out for, we rounded up 7 heartbreaking signs your cat is lonely, according to a vet.

"It is reasonable to suspect that cats can get lonely," Julie Hunt, DVM, a veterinarian contributor at Embrace Pet Insurance. "As humans, we understand loneliness and the feelings of sadness that it can bring. It’s helpful if we can understand our cats’ feelings and emotions as evidenced by their behavior so that we can respond appropriately, helping them when needed."

When you know the signs your cat is lonely and depressed, you can be more empathetic toward your pet and engage with them in a way that fills their cup. To help you know how you can make your cat feel less lonely, as well as to show you what some common behaviors of lonely cats are, read on. Dr. Hunt shares several red flags that are your cat is internally meowing to you, "Lonely, I am so lonely."

It's entirely possible for your cat to feel isolated and lonely. The heartbreaking signs your cat is lonely are hard to notice. But when you do recognize them, you can take steps to help your kitty feel their best. Here are some common ways Dr. Hunt says your cat may be telling you that they could use a little more love and engagement.

1. Being Clingy

An indoor cat experiencing loneliness will often seek out constant attention, raising questions like, “Is my cat lonely or just just affectionate?” Dr. Hunt explains that cats may reach out and latch onto humans or other pets in the home in an attempt to fill their need for companionship. "It’s normal for affectionate cats to follow you from room to room in the house, to sit on your lap when you’re seated, and to sleep in your bed with you," Dr. Hunt says.

However, pet parents should pay attention to changes in cat behavior. So, if you’re wondering “Is my cat being clingy because of loneliness?” the answer may depend on frequency and intensity. When clinginess becomes excessive or suddenly increases, it can be a sign of cat anxiety or loneliness in cats. "An excessive degree of clinginess that is not typical for that cat suggests that the cat may be feeling lonely," Dr. Hunt says.

To help reduce clinginess caused by cat loneliness or anxiety, start by creating gentle independence-building routines. Encourage your cat to spend short periods alone with enriching activities like puzzle feeders, treat toys, or window perches to help reduce attention-seeking behavior in indoor cats. Increasing structured daily playtime can also help.

2. Having accidents outside the litterbox

Unlike their canine counterparts, healthy cats are often quick studies in the housebreaking department. Therefore, if your cat starts pooping or peeing outside of the litterbox, Dr. Hunt says it's a signal that something is up and could be a sign your cat is lonely. However, it's vital not to immediately make that conclusion and to take your cat to the vet to see if there's a medical issue first. "In the absence of a medical cause, litter box accidents are a cat’s way of expressing that it is unhappy about something in the home," Dr. Hunt notes.

Also, Dr. Hunt reveals that cats often have accidents because of changes in the home, like bullying behavior from another pet. If none of those check out? Dr. Hunt says that loneliness could be the culprit.

If litter box accidents are happening because of cat loneliness or emotional stress, the goal is to help your cat feel more secure, stimulated, and socially engaged. Start by increasing daily interaction and bonding time. More consistent play sessions, gentle attention, and predictable routines can help reduce cat loneliness and anxiety-related behavior, including inappropriate elimination.

3. Scratching furniture

Another signs your cat is lonely? They may scratch on furniture. To be clear, though, scratching is a normal, instinctual and necessary for cats. However, not all scratching is normal.

"Cats normally scratch in order to shed layers from their claws and to mark territory," Dr. Hunt explains. "Though, cats that are upset or sad may purposefully destroy things, including furniture, by scratching or biting it," Dr. Hunt states. "Owners may see this in extreme cases of loneliness."

To help reduce destructive scratching in cats, start by providing appropriate outlets for this natural behavior. Place multiple scratching posts or pads around your home, especially in areas where your cat already tends to scratch furniture.

4. Being vocal

If you've been asking yourself lately, "Why is my cat meowing more?" or "Why is my indoor cat more vocal than usual?” this might be your cat communicating its lonely. This may be a sign that your cat is lonely that is not just hurting your heart, but also your ears. Since cats can't speak, they sure can make noise to let you know they need some extra TLC. "Sometimes, excessive vocalization is associated with loneliness or unhappiness.," Dr. Hunt says. "Cats that are upset may yowl at any time of day, or be excessively vocal, particularly when the owner is returning home," Dr. Hunt says.

To help decrease excessive meowing in a lonely cat, start by increasing daily interaction and play. Short, structured play sessions using wand toys or interactive games can help release energy and reduce attention-seeking vocal behavior in indoor cats.

5. They stop eating

A loss of appetite in cats can sometimes be linked to cat loneliness, stress, or emotional distress, particularly in indoor cats who lack stimulation or companionship. Dr. Hunt explains that when cats feel a certain way, it can directly impact their eating habits. “Upset, sad or very lonely cats may become despondent, negatively affecting their appetite,” Dr. Hunt reports. “This should be interpreted in light of what is normal for that particular cat.”

To help a lonely or stressed cat regain their appetite, start by creating a calm, quiet feeding environment. Reducing noise, distractions, and household activity during mealtimes can help encourage eating in cats experiencing cat anxiety or behavioral changes.

6. They eat more

On the flip side, cat loneliness may also show up as an increase in appetite. In some cases, emotional distress in cats can lead to overeating as a coping behavior, especially in indoor cats that lack stimulation or companionship. "Cats that are lonely or mourning the loss of a companion may also overeat," Dr. Hunt states. "Again, this should be interpreted as compared to what is normal for that cat."

To help manage stress-related overeating in cats, start by introducing more structured daily routines. Feeding your cat at consistent times and using portion-controlled meals can help regulate appetite and make them eat more regularly.

7. Playing less

Kitties are more playful than we give them credit for. Dr. Hunt says one of the most heartbreaking signs your cat is lonely is fewer bids for impromptu playdates with you. In these cases, many pet parents ask, “Why is my cat not playing anymore?” The answer may be linked to cat loneliness, boredom, or emotional distress. In fact, when a usually active cat stops engaging in toys, exploration, or interaction, it may signal changes in their emotional wellbeing or possible cat anxiety and low mood.

"Cats that are sad, lonely or mourning the loss of a companion may lie around the house instead of engaging in play or exploration," Dr. Hunt shares. "They may act like they generally have less energy than they usually do."

One of the best ways to help reduce cat loneliness is to increase daily interaction. This can include structured play sessions, using wand toys, or introducing puzzle feeders to provide mental stimulation for indoor cats. These activities help prevent boredom and support healthier cat behavior and enrichment.

Persian Cat’s Epic Frown Will Make You Laugh Instantly

Wed, 04/22/2026 - 8:20pm

In the history of cats, I've never met a single one who hesitates to let us know what they think. They're like literal walking opinions in furry disguise! Even if they can't talk, some of them have those faces that say it all.

This all describes Lulu Belle, a Persian cat with the kind of perma-frown that has her fans obsessed. And when dinner is late, you can bet this kitty isn't about to let Mom get off easy!

If Mom's hoping for forgiveness, she might be waiting a long time! Cats like this annoyed kitty aren't so easy to win over, and one wrong move means you're cut off forever. Lulu Belle and all her feisty, spicy, unapproachable expressions are exactly why cats are so awesome.

All jokes aside, this is one case where you really shouldn't judge a book by its proverbial cover, because this Persian is actually a total sweetheart. It's not her fault she was born with an angry-looking face, but as a casual observer from afar, she makes my day brighter every time I see her!

In case you're wondering if Lulu Belle always looks like this, the short answer is yes, and the longer answer is also a resounding YES! With every new post, there's always a slew of people who ask if she always looks like The Grinch, and every time, Mom repeats that yes—this is just how the precious feline was born!

If ever there were a national spokes-cat for what "Monday Bah-Humbug Mood" looks like, she's it.

Some cats might have that "mad" look 24/7 despite being the nicest kitties around. Just like us, some cats and breeds naturally have flatter faces with expressive, down-turned mouths and big eyes that appear as though they're frowning. Persians are renowned for these features because of their facial structure.

It's funny to think they might be in a bad mood, but in all reality, it's the facial structure based on evolutionary traits causing the expression, and it has nothing to do with how they feel.

With a TikTok following of more than 29k fans waiting for each new post of LuLu Belle, it's no wonder she goes viral so often. Expressive pets will always be a hit, if only because so many of us can look at a cat like Lulu and say, "Wow—she's such a mood, and I feel that to my core!"
