Most dogs are social animals and love to be around people and other pooches. Some canines are more introverted and need space at times, but still want a bestie to play and snuggle with.

Maya the Husky has some guarding issues, which made it difficult for her mom to find her a fur baby friend. With some time and training, Maya now has a sweet puppy sibling and the friend she's always wanted.

Maya and her Golden Retriever puppy sibling were lying on the floor facing each other, just chilling and snuggling. Both pooches were completely relaxed and just enjoying each other's company. It looked like any other normal day, yet the TikTok from @danielledallasroosa explained that this union was extra special for Maya.

"My 12-year-old Husky never had a true friend," the onscreen text explained as Maya gave her sibling sweet kisses. "Even though she loves other dogs, she has resource guarding issues. It was sad to see because she really does like company."

Maya's mom knew it would take plenty of patience and hard work to bring another fur baby into her home, but she wanted Maya to finally have a friend.

"It's been a lot of work and training, but this puppy loves her unconditionally," the story continued as the precious puppy stared lovingly at Maya and gently placed a paw on top of the Husky's. "And this moment makes it all worth it."

Behavior Modification for Resource Guarding

Resource guarding is when a dog exhibits protective or territorial behavior over an item they consider valuable, like food or a certain toy. Causes for this reaction include genetics, past experiences like lack of food, household dynamics, or stressful life changes such as moving or schedule shifts.

Common dog resource guarding behaviors include:

• Freezing in place.
• Moving item to a new location.
• Low growl.
• Air snap or bite.
• Exposed teeth or lip curl.

Behavior modification and training can help curb this behavior in your dog. Start by pairing an item your dog feels stressed about or the need to protect with something extra savory like chicken, hamburger, or hot dogs.

Give your dog access to the guarded resource and walk by at a distance where your dog can see you but doesn't feel threatened by your presence. Toss them the savory treat and move on without watching your dog. Repeat this process several times and you should see through your dog's body language that they will start to equate your presence with receiving a tasty treat.

This technique takes a lot of patience and repetition. Sometimes it helps to bring in a professional trainer for more strategies to discontinue resource guarding. Still, the effort is well worth it if your dog can have a forever friend like Maya gets to enjoy from now on.

This isn’t a Doodle showing off his favorite toy, this is an invitation for lifelong friendship from a big dog inviting the baby into his inner friendship circle. The video shows Honey in her usual spot every morning and every morning the kind neighbor was at the fence feeding her treats. Then, at the end, there’s Honey still at the fence watching, waiting and hoping. Them at the very last scene, there's a bark—the kind that sounds like a question that can't get answered.

The comments section echoed the collective grief.

Bless little Joey's heart. The sweet Maltipoo is the victim of a cruel scam involving fake steak, and I admit that I'm here for it.

In this very entertaining TikTok, Joey is doing his best to make an enormous image of a grilled steak on the TV come to life. The poor Maltipoo is licking the screen with everything he's got, hoping to get just a taste of the very realistic image. And while this trick is mean, it's also hilarious, and we just hope that Joey's humans gave him a piece of the real deal after all of his pain and suffering.

I, for one, have been guilty of similar behavior while watching TV. I've yet to lick the screen, but I've fallen victim to many an appetizing food commercial and ordered delivery on the spot. Therefore, I can't blame this duped dog for taking matters into his own paws (or mouth). I wonder, though: do most dogs recognize the images they see on TV, or is Joey in the minority?

Turns out, dogs aren’t just randomly staring at the TV—they can genuinely see and process what’s happening on screen in a way that’s pretty similar to us. They’re able to recognize animals (even ones they’ve never seen before) and respond to familiar sounds like barking as if it’s happening in real life. But food? Yes, that too.

A big part of the appeal is movement and sound. Dogs are especially tuned into motion, so anything running, jumping, or darting across the screen can grab their attention fast. Add in high-pitched or recognizable noises—like another dog barking—and you’ve got their full focus.

TikTok user @rachbiscuit22 shared the moment their home inspector encountered their Maine Coon, and things took a turn almost instantly.

While walking through the house, he pauses and then, instead of just… continuing his job like a normal person, he calls someone and starts describing what he’s seeing in real time: “I’m doing this inspection right now and there’s this cat here… and like, it’s a very large size cat. It’s an intimidatingly large size cat.”

At one point, he reassures the person on the other end, “No, I pet him and he was chill,” before trying to explain the vibe in a way that honestly deserves an award: “You know how you see a cat and they have a cute face? This cat is like… I might eat you later.”

That phrase alone has already entered my personal hall of fame.

The whole thing feels less like a home inspection and more like a live commentary on a cat he cannot emotionally process. And honestly, I get it. The first time someone sees a Maine Coon up close, there’s always a moment of… wait, is this still a cat?

A tree fell on my house last November and when the roof repair guy came out, he saw my Maine Coon, Meatball, and asked me twice what kind of dog he was. Twice. He simply could not accept that this was a cat existing in the world at that size.

People in the comments were losing it over the inspector’s reaction.

“Yes! I had an HVAC guy get back in his van, call me, and say there was a bobcat on the front porch. Sir, that’s Pretzel,” one person shared.

Maine Coons are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, often weighing between 10 and 25 pounds, with long bodies, massive tails, and that signature lion-like ruff around their necks.

Because of their size, people who aren’t familiar with the breed are often genuinely startled when they see one in person. It’s not just that they’re big, it’s that they move and carry themselves in a way that feels… substantial.

But despite their intimidating appearance, Maine Coons are known for being incredibly gentle, affectionate, and social. They’re often described as “dog-like” because they tend to follow their people around, enjoy interaction, and have a calm, easygoing temperament.

Which means the inspector wasn’t wrong to be slightly concerned, but also had absolutely nothing to worry about.

Unless, of course, the cat did decide to eat him later. Which, based on that face… OK, fair.

Of all the oceanside cities in the country, San Francisco’s waterfront is one of the few places where city life and wild marine life blur so much that sea lions sunbathing on the docks barely turn heads. Especially at the famed Pier 39, visitors can see these marvelous creatures barking and jostling for attention as they sprawl across floating platforms just steps from tourists and traffic.

So when a lone pup is found far from the water, even in a place like the streets of San Francisco, it immediately draws attention to the obviously out of place beach dweller. Such was the case on Thursday, April 16, when the Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) revealed that a sea lion pup, who they promptly named Irving, was found near 48th Avenue and Irving Street in the early hours of the morning.

Inside One Sea Lion Pup’s Late-Night Journey View this post on Instagram

“California sea lion pup Irving made a BIG splash this week after his rescue during the wee hours of the morning Thursday,” @themarinemammalcenter captioned the post. “Thanks to our trained responders and support from our friends @sfpdofficial@sfrecpark and @oavhavevet, Irving is now recovering at our Sausalito hospital." 

Quickly becoming something of a “seal-ebrity” in the handful of hours between Irving’s discovery and the Marine Mammal Center’s post, it’s still not entirely clear how the pup made his way so far from his family. According to local news outlets, Irving was located around 1:30 a.m. when officers from the San Francisco Police Department and the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department responded to the scene alongside trained staff from the Marine Mammal Center.

From there, Irving was gently corralled into a carrier crate provided by Ocean Avenue Veterinary and transported to a San Francisco Recreation and Park Department ranger station. The pup was then transferred to the Sausalito hospital by mid-morning on April 16 after hanging out with the ranger for a few hours.

Updates on Irving and Public Response

“As of now, it's unknown why Irving was away from their usual habitat,” a representative from the Marine Mammal Center said. “The pup will receive an admission exam from our veterinary experts this week to determine sex, evaluate their condition, identify any underlying ailments, and better assess long-term future outlook.”

While Irving is officially in safe hands, the center also shared an endearing photo of Irving sitting on the sidewalk beside the Irving Street sign and a brief explanation of how the events went down. They also included a helpful tip for city dwellers and visitors alike, advising that the public always keep a safe distance from marine mammals and to contact TMMC’s rescue hotline to report any animals in need. 

“Positive vibes for its recovery,” one person responded to TMMC’s post.

“What an angel,” another added.

A local chimed in with excitement, writing, “We are so lucky to have the Marine Mammal Center so close to the city. Fast response, fast rescue! Thank you Marine Mammal Center for keeping us in the loop!”

The fact that this brave little pup made it so far inland is impressive on its own. And while they are thankfully in good hands, we can’t help but hope they can be reunited with their family soon. If you’ve ever lost a kid or family member in a big store or at a theme park, you know that moment of panic all too well. Here’s hoping Irving’s parents are holding up OK and get to see their pup again very soon.

Nelly, a Hermann’s tortoise who was rescued from a hoarding situation and later adopted into a loving home, is known for his incredibly social personality. He’s friendly, curious and drawn to other animals. But not all animals are created equal in Nelly's eyes—he has a serious soft spot for orange cats.

His human, Amy Husk, fosters kittens through a rescue called If Cats Ruled The World Feline Rescue, which means there’s a steady stream of cats coming through the house. While Nelly is generally uninterested in most of them, something shifts the moment an orange cat enters the picture.

How It All Began

It started when Husk fostered and then adopted an adult orange rescue cat named Mac. Nelly was instantly enamored with him, following him around like a puppy and always wanting to be next to him. 

More recently, the rescue took in a pregnant cat from a hoarding situation who later gave birth to several kittens. Husk stepped up to foster and took in Bert, a tiny orange kitten. As soon as Nelly spotted Bert, as seen in the video below, he made a beeline for him, moving as fast as his little legs could carry him.

Bert is still a bit unsure of his shelled admirer. After all, he’s never met a tortoise before. Nelly, on the other hand, seemed completely convinced he had just met another orange bestie.

A Pattern That’s Hard to Ignore

Husk has noticed a pattern: orange cats get Nelly’s full attention, while cats of other colors barely register. It’s become a running joke and a full-blown personality trait.

Interestingly, there may be a scientific explanation behind Nelly’s unusual preference. Tortoises are known to have strong color vision, and they can be especially drawn to bright hues like red, yellow and orange. It’s possible that Nelly simply perceives orange more vividly than other colors and finds it intriguing. Or maybe he just has excellent, slightly chaotic taste.  

An Unlikely Friendship in the Making

Either way, the pairing of a slow-moving, love-struck tortoise and a slightly skeptical kitten is peak internet joy. In follow-up videos, it appears as if Bert is slowly starting to accept his shelled admirer. If Nelly’s track record is any indication, it’s only a matter of time before he wins him over.

The house was supposed to be empty.

No one from the property side seemed to know she was there. The dog had been so quiet, so still in her hiding place, that realtors and landlords had come and gone without realizing the previous tenants had left a living animal behind.

When the new occupant arrived, she was pressed into a corner: not growling, not running— just watching. Waiting to see what kind of person this was.

As the new owner of the house wrote in a Reddit post in r/rescuedogs, "When I first got here, she was alone and didn't trust anyone. Now she follows me everywhere and finally feels at home. I think we rescued each other."

That last line is the one worth sitting with.

Dogs Pick Their Person

We talk about adopting dogs as if the choice is entirely ours. The steps seem simple: we walk through a shelter, we pick the one who catches our eye and we bring them home.

However, behavioral research suggests the dynamic is far more mutual than that. Dogs form what ethologists call "selective attachment bonds," and they do it fast, based on a surprisingly specific set of criteria.

They're watching your body language. They're listening to your tone. They notice whether you move toward them confidently or nervously.

The Moment of Trust

You've probably seen this if you've ever lived with a rescue dog. There's a morning, sometimes weeks after they arrive, sometimes a matter of days, where you walk into the kitchen and they're just...there.

Oakley was lying on the floor as his mom gently massaged him as part of his rehab regimen in the TikTok from @whiskeytoller. River lingered nearby and seemed both concerned and curious about his canine brother.

"I noticed my cat started acting differently after my senior dog needed rehab," the onscreen text explained. "He would come over whenever I would give Oakley his massages. He kept watching closely and offering his support and comfort."

River got closer to Oakley in each clip, almost like he picked up on the pooch needing extra care. The pretty kitty saw that his fur baby brother was hurting and wanted to lend a paw.

River Took Over for Mom

River went from giving Oakley physical affection to actually massaging his sibling just like their mom had been doing. The gray cat went full-on masseuse mode for Oakley, climbing on top of him to get certain angles and making sure he covered the pooch's whole body with gentle rubs. All he needed was some candles and zen spa music to complete the setting.

"I couldn’t believe how sweet this was — River just wanted to help his brother Oakley too," the caption shared, with the onscreen text adding, "River is the best kitty brother to Oakley ever."

Followers praised the sweet cat for his compassion and brotherly love.

When your dog disappears, there's this really difficult moment where you have to make the impossible decision: do you keep searching, or do you give up and accept that they're never coming back?

For the Picardo family in San Jose, that question haunted them for nearly two and a half years. Their French Bulldog, Koko, disappeared in 2023 after their gardener accidentally left the backyard gate open. Koko and her companion, Gizmo—both very  much beloved family members—just vanished into thin air.

What followed was textbook search protocol: police reports, neighborhood canvassing, flyers everywhere, constant shelter checks, microchips activated as missing. "Time just kept going on, and we kept checking, going to local shelters. We activated them as missing with their microchips," the family told NBC Bay Area's Marianne Favro.

Then, scammers made the situation even worse, demanding $500 via Apple Pay and threatening to, "send your dogs to Nevada," if they didn't pay the ransom. Two years passed and the family's 7-year-old daughter was completely devastated. 

This week, one phone call changed everything.

Zoe Maxine, a 23-year-old DJ from San Francisco, did somethine most would not have done. She'd actually bought a Frenchie off Craigslist for $500 over a year ago, in San Jose. She named her Mochi. But, when Zoe could no longer reach the sellers, she got suspicious and searched online. What happened next, no one could have expected. She found Koko's photo and contacted the Picardos.

"She sent the picture of Koko. We just bawled our eyes out because we're like, that's her. That's her," the Picardo family said.

Zoe told NBC, "I didn't feel right keeping her when her owner was searching for her. I'm happy her owner gets to know she's alive and well and is reunited with her."

Years ago, ticks were a late-spring concern. But this year, some states have reported tick issues as early as February.

Across the United States, veterinarians, researchers and public health officials are issuing urgent warnings, not as a precaution, but because they're already seeing the shift happen in real time.

Because the real risk isn't just the tick you find, it's the one you don't.

Which States Are Seeing the Earliest Tick Surge?

The first signs are subtle—a dog scratching more than usual, a tiny speck buried in fur. Easy to dismiss, until it isn't.

Across the Northeast, those signs are showing up earlier than expected.

In New York, labs tracking tick activity are seeing submissions surge, more than doubling in just a year. But it's not just the volume that stands out. It's the type of ticks being found. For example, the Lone Star tick, which was considered a southern species, has now expanded its range.

Connecticut is seeing the same shift. Ticks started showing up as early as February, weeks ahead of the typical season. After a winter that should have reduced their numbers, conditions did the opposite. Snow acted like insulation, protecting ticks from extreme cold, while sudden warm spells triggered early activity. As a result, the season is longer and more active.

In Wyoming, for example, tick season usually begins in late April. However, this year, veterinarians are already hearing from pet parents who are finding ticks on dogs, cats, and even horses far earlier than expected.

This is not an isolated problem. It is an expanding pattern.

What State Has the Worst Tick Problem?

Looking at the data, one state stands out: New York.

According to CDC data, between 2019 and 2022, New York reported more than 33,000 cases of tick-borne diseases. For comparison, the second state on the list, Pennsylvania, reported 25,000. New Jersey, Wisconsin and Maine round up the top five.

While not all cases involve dogs, the numbers reflect just how active and widespread tick populations have become.

What vets are warning is that tick risk is no longer a problem limited to a handful of states. It is spreading.

What Are the First Signs of a Tick on a Dog?

Most dog parents don't notice a tick right away. Sadly, by the time they find it, the tick has already attached and started feeding.

The challenge is that some tick-borne diseases can begin transmitting within hours.

Here's what to watch for:

Physical Signs of Ticks on Dogs

• Persistent scratching or licking in one area, namely, parts around the neck, ears, groin or between the toes
• A small, hard bump on the skin that wasn't there before
• A visible tick attached to the skin, ranging from the size of a sesame seed to a swollen, gray-blue lump
• Redness, swelling or irritation at a bite site
• Scabs with no clear cause during grooming

Tick-borne disease symptoms don't always appear right away. They can develop days, weeks, or even months after a bite.

Watch for lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, stiff joints, swollen lymph nodes, pale gums, nosebleeds, unusual bleeding, reluctance to move, vomiting or diarrhea. The moment you notice any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

How to Safely Remove a Tick From Your Dog

First things first, speed matters. Act sooner to lower the risk of disease transmission.

Sometimes, you cannot wait for a vet visit. However, you do need to remove the tick properly. Tools needed include: fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool, disposable gloves, rubbing alcohol, and a sealed container.

Step-by-Step Tick Removal

• Put on gloves and part your dog's fur to expose the tick
• Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, focusing on the head
• Pull upward slowly and steadily without twisting
• Check that the entire tick is removed
• Place the tick in alcohol to kill and preserve it
• Clean the bite area thoroughly

Do not use petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat. While some methods suggest using these products to help remove the tick, they can cause improper detachment. As a result, the tick leaves parts behind in the skin that can cause disease days after it is removed.

Should Dog Owners in All States Be Worried?

Short answer: yes.

Ticks are now a widespread problem, appearing in rural and urban environments. What used to be a countryside problem is now showing up in city parks, backyards, and everyday walking routes.

The message in 2026 is simple: Low risk doesn't mean no risk.

Tick populations are adapting. Warmer winters, shifting climates, and expanding habitats are changing where and when ticks appear. Areas that once saw minimal activity are now reporting regular encounters.

For dog owners, that means awareness matters more than ever.

Because in a season like this, it's not about whether ticks are around. It's about whether you notice them in time.

How To Help a Dachshund Lose Weight in a Healthy Way

Weight gain in Dachshunds can be very common due to eating too many calories and not getting enough exercise.

However, there can be other reasons for weight gain, including heart disease, tumors, parasites, hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, neuturing, and some medications.

Be sure to take your pup to the vet before just putting them on a diet to see what the medical reason is behind your Dachshund's weight gain.

Once the dog has been assessed, then with the vet, you can decide what kind of food they should eat and if you should limit servings.

She's also a diva who loves to wear clothes, which is exactly the type of life she deserves to live. She has a whole bunch of different outfits, and she likes to choose based on her mood. She's so easygoing that she even lets her mom put sunglasses on her.

Also, and I mean this with love, Meatball would immediately try to body-check him off that desk just to see what happens. Not maliciously. Just… for science. Elvis, our Calico cat, however, would adopt him within 45 seconds and start grooming him like he’s been hers his entire life.

Calico cats are famous for their tricolor coats, usually a mix of white, black, and orange, and they come with a fun little genetic twist. The vast majority of Calico cats are female, thanks to the coat color's link to the X chromosome.

Because females have two X chromosomes, they can display both black and orange coloring, creating that classic patchwork look. Male Calico cats do exist, but they are extremely rare and usually have an extra chromosome, which can come with health challenges.

I do have a big Calico cat named Elvis, and she is just the sweetest thing. Technically, she belongs to my dog, because he’s the one who adopted her, which feels like a detail that raises more questions than it answers, but here we are. She’s calm, affectionate, and very much the quiet queen of the house.

As captioned, Mom "bringing in the reinforcements" gets the job done! As Theo perfectly impersonates her voice, tone, volume, and cadence, I'm sure Louis, the dog, wondered if Mom somehow cloned herself as he picked up the pace to get home.
