How Big Can Maine Coon Cats Get?

Since Maine Coons are the largest breed of domestic cats, their size can be pretty impressive when they're fully grown! And of course, since they're large cats in general, their paws are going to be big, too.

But how big can Maine Coons get? According to PetMD, male Maine Coons will weigh between 18-25 pounds when fully grown, while females will weigh in at around 10-14 pounds. As for their height, they will grow to be about 10-14 inches tall.

Their large size and thick, water-resistant coats were made to help them withstand the outdoors in super cold temperatures, and so are their feet. Those big paws help keep the cats from slipping on snow and ice, and they have to be big to support their larger weight. Many cats have paws that are as big as four inches across.

Another fun fact: Maine Coon cats are more likely to be polydactyl, which means they have extra toes on each paw. Just another reason to love these unique animals!

Stories like this hit me hard every time. Maybe it's because animals have a way of showing us something we already know in our bones, even when people still argue about whether they understand love, loss, or grief. Or maybe it's because horses have always had a special place in my heart. I grew up around them, and I know how lucky I am to have known that kind of quiet, powerful presence up close.

Buddy Braley, a 6-year-old boy, sat on a rainy morning on a farm in rural Gloucester, England, grieving after losing his dog, and put up a sign that said, "Stop here! To feed goats for charity."

Buddy and his goats waited, and by the end of the week, strangers from all around the world had donated over £16,000, or nearly $22,000, for local animal rescue shelters.

The Friendship That Inspired Something Bigger

Anyone who has loved a dog understands the love and friendship humans share with their furry companions. Losing a dog can feel like losing a close family member.

Understandably, many pet parents struggle with the loss of a dog and are unable to see beyond the grief. However, Buddy managed to find a way to turn his grief into something positive.

With the help of his family and a few goats, he started a fundraising effort that combined his love of animals and a desire to help dogs waiting for homes.

Bella and Bertie, the Hero Goats

With his father's help, Buddy set up a goat feeding station and trained his two goats, Bella and Bertie, to stick their heads through a cutout every time he rang a bell.

As visitors stopped to support Buddy's philanthropic efforts, the family used social media to increase the fundraiser's reach. Within a few days, donations started pouring in from all over the world.

The Internet Cannot Get Enough of Buddy

As news of Buddy's fundraiser spread, people flooded social media with messages of support.

"That is a wonderful tribute to your beloved dog's memory and it will help so many other animals. Great job Buddy!" said one commenter.

"Another added, "What a sweet little soul, to make such a big ripple in the lives of others," added another.

Another viewer shared his own experience with loss, saying, "Lost three dogs over the years. Your awesomeness in helping out with other animals and dogs in shelters is inspiring."

Buddy's Parents Raised an Angel

Buddy's parents did not come up with the idea. It was all the young boy's doing. Still, his parents did help him build the sign, set up the stand, and share it online.

His family says the project helped him grow in confidence while going through the loss of his beloved dog. Buddy has managed to raise thousands of pounds for local animal rescue centers, but as awareness of Buddy's effort continues to grow, expect that total money raised to continue to grow.

Some dogs have very unique markings that can literally make you do a double-take. Breeds like Australian Shepherds, English Setters, and Dalmatians boast eye-catching color patterns that look like they've been painted. In the TikTok from @the.masked.ween, Dodger was curled up on the couch snuggling with one of his parents. The Mini Doxie had a jaw-dropping coat pattern that could be compared to a masterpiece by a legendary artist.

A dramatic white "mask" covered the top half of Dodger's head and wrapped around his glacier-like eyes, except for a prominent black-outlined brown patch by each eye. The alabaster color was sharply contrasted by his midnight black ears, making a definitive shift in hue.

Dodger's snout was classic Dachshund brown, while the fur on his body was a mosaic of gray and brown flecks on a white background. Though his entire tail wasn't in the frame, the visible area was a golden color with sharp black and white lines on top.

Followers were in awe of the precious pooch's one-of-a-kind coat and raved over Dodger's exceptional appearance.

"Eyes like the most beautiful weighted contacts," one noted.

"That is the most amazing dachshund I've ever seen," someone remarked.

Why Dapple Piebald Dachshunds Look So Unique

Dapple Dachshunds are known for their gorgeous coat pattern caused by a genetic trait called the dapple or "merle" gene, which creates light patches or spots that results in a marble effect on a dark-coated base.

A single dapple dog only has one copy of the merle gene, where a double dapple gets two copies — one from each parent. Double dapples have greater health risks due to this genetic overload including deafness, blindness, or other physical deformities.

The Piebald Dachshund also displays a unique coat pattern that has a predominantly white base coat covered by various colored patches. Both Doxie parents need to have the recessive Piebald gene in their heritage, yet they don't have to be Piebalds themselves. Piebalds can have an increased risk of hearing issues.

Combining these two types of Dachshunds can bring the health risks that come from both sides. The union obviously produces a commanding-coated canine as Dodger beautifully demonstrates.

Great Danes often seem really intimidating at first. They're huge! The size difference between them and other pets is definitely daunting when you first see it, but pretty quickly, they show their true colors. These dogs are just big babies: they're the gentlest giants around!

First of all, Euro Maine Coons has some very beautiful kittens. Second, and maybe more importantly, that Great Dane looks exactly like Scooby Doo. He's even wearing Scooby's signature teal collar! These kittens are so lucky to have him.

The Great Dane, named Scooby, lasted five whole days without seeing the kittens. That might be a record for him: he lives in this Florida-based cattery, and welcoming the kittens is his favorite part!

This litter is 6 kittens, and their mom loves to move them around from place to place. It's at the point that their followers are taking bets on if she'll move them overnight or not. The Maine Coonies are used to their mom bringing home kittens from here, there, and everywhere. She runs an animal rescue! She brings home litters of kittens all the time, but this kitten in particular is special.

He really hit it off with Dexter, the largest and grumpiest Maine Coon of them all. Dexter is the hardest for the kittens to get along with: he prefers to spend most of his time off by himself or fighting with his sister, Luna.

This little black kitten is one of the only exceptions Dexter has ever made to that rule. The kitten spends all of his time with him, and they've had chewing practice, pouncing practice, and more. No matter what, Dexter never seems to be sick of his new little friend:

TikTok user @pandoraadventures shared the touching video. It introduces viewers to a fluffy Tabby kitten named Chopper. According to the caption, Chopper was dropped into the creator's neighbor's yard by a hawk, prompting the now immortal question: "The cat distribution system has drones now?"

The poor little guy can be seen sitting inside a kennel, looking understandably overwhelmed by the whole experience. His fluffy fur, worried little face, and tiny size immediately had me wanting to scoop him up and wrap him in approximately 17 blankets.

In a follow-up video, Chopper's human mom explained that the kitten suffered an injured back leg, but thankfully, the veterinarian believes he has a good chance of regaining use of it. She also shared that he's understandably traumatized after his ordeal, but that she believes he's going to be OK.

Although hawks are powerful birds of prey, experts say attacks involving kittens are uncommon and depend heavily on the size of both the bird and the other animal involved. Smaller kittens can occasionally be targeted, particularly if they are outdoors and unattended.

Wildlife experts recommend supervising young pets outside and providing enclosed spaces or secure areas where vulnerable animals can stay protected from predators.

Thankfully, Chopper's story appears to have a happy ending.

The tiny visitor can be seen perched comfortably while sipping nectar from Iron Man's chest cavity, which is not a sentence I expected to write today.

Somehow, the whole thing works perfectly. The red and gold colors look surprisingly natural among the flowers, and the little Hummingbird seems completely unbothered by the fact that they're essentially having lunch with a superhero.

I have to admit, the close-up footage absolutely sent me. You can even see the tiny tongue while the bird feeds, which somehow makes the whole thing even more magical.

And honestly, if I were a Hummingbird, I too would choose the billionaire genius in the fancy suit.

I've always thought my Pug mix looks like baby Simba from The Lion King. He has the same honey-hued coloring, muscular (albeit a bit fleshier) build, and sassy personality as the spunky lion cub, making him a mirror image of the famous Disney character.

In this video, Pebbles the Chimera Ragdoll is getting a massage, which is a perfect opportunity to get a close-up view of her face. She's perfectly split down the middle, and there are polka dots on either side of her face, along with matching ones on her paws.

Pebbles is almost 6 years old, though from some angles, she still looks like a kitten. She has huge blue eyes and a patchwork coat that legitimately looks like a living work of art. The first time I saw her, I didn't even think she was real!

Chimera Cats Are Super Rare

A true Chimera cat is hard to come by. Some breeders may use it as a marketing tactic, and shelters might have it listed for certain cats, but true Chimerism is rare.

Chimerism occurs when two fertilized embryos fuse together, essentially fusing two cats into one cat. This happens early on in the pregnancy, and though there are some signs that your cat might be a Chimera, the only way to confirm is through genetic testing.

Pebbles was tested, and all of the signs are there for her, too. She has:

• Different colored paws.

“One other surprising reality is that many British Shorthairs don’t love being picked up or carried around,” she continues. “They’re sturdy cats, and some tolerate handling well, but many prefer to keep all four paws on the ground.”

For many new pet parents, this becomes part of their charm as the breed’s quiet companionship is expressed more through presence than physical clinginess, reinforcing their unique British Shorthair personality.

They Love Company, but on Their Own Terms

“British Shorthairs tend to be independent and self-possessed,” Wooten explains. “They may enjoy being near their people, but they often want control over when and how interaction happens.”

That independence shouldn’t be mistaken for aloofness, though. “British Shorthairs are loyal, devoted companions who are affectionate in an undemanding way,” says Dr. Matthew Murdoch, veterinarian and director of Ferndale Kennels and Travel Pet Relocation Services.

Instead of constantly seeking attention, these indoor cats often happiest relaxing nearby and keeping you company. “It’s a very understated, British type of love,” Murdoch adds.

When it comes to British Shorthair characteristics, vets say people are shocked to learn they are pretty calm cats! Therefore, if you've lived with a highly energetic cat that treats your home like a personal obstacle course, a British Shorthair may come as a welcome surprise.

“They’re often less frantic or mischievous than some more high-energy breeds,” Wooten says. “This can surprise people who are used to cats that climb curtains, knock everything off shelves or need constant entertainment to stay out of trouble.”

One of the most appealing British Shorthair traits is their calm, easygoing temperament. While they still enjoy playtime, they're generally content to relax near their favorite people and aren't known for causing household chaos. For many first-time owners, this laidback nature is one reason British Shorthairs are considered such good pets and a great fit for quieter homes.

They Can Be Playful

One aspect of British Shorthair behavior that surprises many new pet parents is that they have a playful side. In fact, because British Shorthairs are so relaxed, it’s easy for owners to assume they don’t need much stimulation. “They still benefit from daily interactive play, puzzle feeders, climbing spaces, scratching posts and environmental enrichment,” Wooten explains. “A quiet cat isn't the same thing as a cat who doesn’t need engagement.”

They Tend to Gain Weight Easily

Did you know British Shorthair cats can easily gain weight if their routine isn’t managed carefully? It's true! Though sine their naturally round, stocky build can make it tricky for owners to notice small changes over time, especially because they tend to look cute and cuddly even when they’ve put on a few extra pounds.

“Portion control, regular play and routine veterinary weight checks are important so ‘chonky and cute’ doesn’t become a health problem,” Wooten states.

Murdoch agrees and adds, “As a vet, I feel their weight gain is one of the biggest health issues to watch,” he explains. “This breed is fairly relaxed and inactive. In turn, this makes them more likely to gain weight compared to other cat breeds.”

Their Coat Is Easier to Maintain Than It Looks

Don't let their fur fool you. While caring for their pretty coat is a big part of being their pet parent, it's not as hard to groom them as many people think. It just takes a little time commitment to keep them looking and feeling their best.

“While their plush coats are adorable, they need help removing loose hair because their coat is dense," Wooten shares. "Their coat benefits from regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons."

They Take Time to Warm Up to New People

British Shorthairs are often deeply affectionate with their families, but they may take a little longer to warm up to new people, which many cat lovers may not realize.

“This can surprise owners who expect an outgoing, social cat based on the breed’s sweet expression,” Wooten says. “Many British Shorthairs prefer to observe first and interact later once they feel comfortable.”

Rather than being unfriendly, this reserved nature is simply part of their personality. They tend to build trust slowly, choosing familiarity and routine over instant connection.

“A British Shorthair’s personality will also be shaped by genetics, early socialization, health, environment and how respectfully people interact with them,” Wooten concludes.

For many cat parents, this slower approach to bonding is part of what makes the relationship feel so rewarding once trust is earned.

As an orange Maine Coon mom myself, I completely understand this level of affection. My giant orange boy Meatball weighs approximately one million pounds when he decides it's cuddle time. And once they're in a loving mood, there is no leaving. There is no getting up. There is only accepting your fate.

It's basically like being loved by a lion.

The Cat Gave Birth to Five Kittens, but Her Dad Counted Six

Kathy Price has spent years taking in stray cats. In the video, she talked about her house cat. Two months before she gave birth to five kittens, Kathy heard meowing outside her door. She opened the door and found a tortoiseshell cat running straight into the house.

Her cat gave birth on Memorial Day. She brought three orange kittens and two gray kittens into the world. One day, Kathy's husband asked how many kittens there were. She replied, "Five," to which he said, "I counted six."

The Surprise Hiding in the Litter

When the family checked the litter, they noticed an extra baby nestled around the kittens. It was not another cat. It was a tiny wild bunny.

Nobody knows how the rabbit found his way into the nest. The family never saw him coming. What they saw was the mother's reaction.

Their house cat accepted him as if he was one of her own babies. She allowed him to stay among the kittens and cared for him alongside the rest of the litter.

Now, the family involves five kittens, one bunny, and one devoted cat mom.

Cats Are Better Mothers Than People Realize

Cats have strong maternal instincts, especially during the weeks following birth. Their nurturing behavior is at its peak. Sometimes, they would accept kittens from another litter.

As one fan commented, "Not surprising. My barn cat had a litter after she adopted me and I put an orphaned week-old puppy with the litter. She raised him with the kittens and they still sleep together eight years later."

Looking for New Homes

Kathy hopes to find homes for all of the kittens. She wants to find a great home for the mother cat, saying, "She's been through a tragedy. Having her home disrupted. But she deserves to have a secure place, with or without kittens and bunnies."

Right now, the kittens are not ready to move. Once they are big enough, the bunny will go on to live in the wild.

Trusting the 3-3-3 Rule

This dog mom adopted her rescue German shepherd in February, and in a Reddit post on r/germanshepherds, she confessed that things were rough at first.

She was in both physical and emotional pain. Then, she started obedience and rally classes, and slowly but surely something changed. It took time, but now she has a perfect companion by her side.

The challenge with rescue dogs is that many families skip the step of letting the dog decompress. They want to go from "we adopted him" to heartwarming photos in a day. In reality, things do not happen that way.

Understanding the 3-3-3 Rule

Adoption shelters often emphasize the 3-3-3 rule. While some dogs take longer to calm down and settle into their new forever home, most of the time, the 3-3-3 holds true.

Simply put, the rule emphasizes that shelter dogs remain in survival mode for the first three days, then they learn the routine in the first three weeks, and build trust in the first three months.

In the first few days after moving to a new home, the dog finds themselves in unfamiliar territory. They meet new people and experience new smells, routines and sounds. Naturally, they can feel anxious, withdrawn and even reactive. They need those first three days to understand that they are safe.

Within the first three weeks, dogs begin to learn new routines: when they eat dinner, where they can sleep, how to get familiar with their new mom and dad, and how to earn rewards. During this period, dogs begin to show their true personalities as they feel more comfortable.

Transformation happens within three months, when the dog starts to feel at home. They become more confident and happily participate in training.

The dog mom on Reddit said her dog is an angel now, and puts it plainly for all future adopters, "The 3-3-3 rule really is accurate. Give it time. Get a trainer. The tears I shed in the end are worth it."

Rescue Parents Know the Feeling

Many fans recognized the feeling of adopting a dog and then having their personality come out. It is all worth it in the end. One person said, "The effort you put into him comes back x1000. Best friend you'll ever have. Rescues just know and they show it to their person."

Another commented on the photos this dog mom shared, saying, "I can tell you're doing a great job by the way he looks at you in those pics. He trusts you. That's huge."

The lesson here is that the dogs we see today are not the dogs they were. This dog mom said she suspects her dog might have been abused before.

Whether that is true or not, many rescue dogs carry emotional scars before arriving at their forever home. It takes time, training and structure. Trust changes everything when dogs and their humans work on the relationship.

Rescue dogs don't need perfect owners. They need people willing to stick around long enough for them to believe they're finally home.

American Bullies Look Tough, but They're Gentle Giants

As a dog under the Pit Bull umbrella, some might take one look at Reggie and cast judgment, if only because of his size, muscular shape, and/or pre-conceived stigmas against Bully breeds. I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and he wouldn't hurt a fly! If anything, a fly would terrify him, and he'd come running for comfort.

The fascinating clip, shared on TikTok by @french_adrift, shows a man catching and then safely releasing an incredibly shiny Silver Scabbardfish, also known as a Frostfish. According to the caption, these ribbon-like fish normally live hundreds of meters below the surface, making sightings relatively uncommon.

The first thing I thought when I saw it was, "Surely that is just a very stressed piece of Reynolds Wrap."

Despite their unusual appearance, Frostfish are real deep-water fish who belong to a species known as the Silver Scabbardfish. They typically live hundreds or even thousands of feet below the ocean's surface, which is one reason many people have never encountered one before.

The hilarious clip was shared by the TikTok account for @Safari_davis and documents what can only be described as a traumatic event involving two White Faced Whistling Ducks named Beaker and Bunsen.

According to the caption, "The Incident" occurred on March 19, 2026, inside the Cincinnati Zoo's butterfly aviary. There were two witnesses. The victims were Beaker and Bunsen. And zoo staff were not entirely convinced either duck would ever emotionally recover.

The video itself is absolutely adorable. As butterflies flutter nearby, the two little ducks react with the kind of panic usually reserved for home invasions and surprise tax audits.

I laughed because I know several people who would have reacted exactly the same way.

In my mind, these butterflies know exactly what they're doing. They just spend their days floating around the aviary wreaking psychological havoc on innocent duckies.

Tiny beautiful terrorists.

The comments section was equally hilarious.

Even though butterflies are harmless, many animals are startled by sudden movements, especially when something unexpectedly flutters close to their faces. Birds, mammals and even some humans can react instinctively to quick, unpredictable motion.

Because butterflies move erratically and can appear without warning, some animals temporarily interpret them as potential threats. Fortunately, most creatures quickly realize there is no danger and go right back to their regularly scheduled business.
