I’ve always thought one of the hardest parts of leaving for college has to be saying goodbye to the pets who don’t understand why you suddenly packed your life into boxes. One Orange Cat is making that heartbreak painfully clear.

In the video, Mom hears him meowing loudly in the hallway and walks over to figure out what’s wrong. At first, it looks like a cat simply demanding something with the urgency only an Orange Cat can produce.

Mom follows, and suddenly she realizes exactly where he’s taking her: his person’s bedroom.

His favorite human left for college the day before.

I was already emotional, but then he starts walking straight to the closed door and cries even louder. Mom gently reminds him that his person is at school, but this little guy clearly has one question: then why isn’t he in his room?

The post caption explains that he’s been meowing all day, asking to be let inside. When Mom finally asks whether that’s what he wants and opens the door, he immediately goes in.

The way he leads Mom down the hallway is what gets me most. He knows exactly where he wants to go.

Oh, my heart.

Mom reassures him that his person will be back, and thank goodness she says it because I needed to hear it, too.

The comments were also devastating. One person skipped all practical considerations and demanded that somebody take the cat to college immediately. I understand the impulse.

Another commenter shared a surprisingly sweet solution from their own family: Their daughter has a camera that dispenses treats while she’s away at school, so they’ll sometimes hear her talking to her cat from upstairs between classes.

Now that’s the kind of college technology I support.

Cats may be labeled as independent or aloof, but moments like this make it pretty obvious how deeply they can attach to their people and routines. This kitty knew exactly whose door he wanted opened.

I just hope somebody sends his person this video, because there’s clearly a very important orange roommate waiting for Thanksgiving break.

Niall Harbison often tries to place the street dogs he saves through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo, into forever homes. Many of these canines have traveled thousands of miles after being adopted by families across the globe. Sometimes, these dogs get their happy endings closer than expected.

Steve is a French Bulldog mix recently rescued by Harbison, and the canine cutie managed to steal the heart of his very own doctor.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo told Steve’s story and how he fought Harbison’s rescue attempts at first.

“When we found Steve, he was scared and broken,” the on-screen text explained. “He needed treatment and lots of patience.”

The precious pooch was abandoned at a temple and fell ill. Steve’s pain and confusion made him fearful of anyone who came near him. Thankfully, Harbison and his team were able to bring him back to the Happy Doggo sanctuary, where he received the medical attention he required to begin healing.

“While we were fixing his body, someone was watching him very closely,” the story continued as the video showed Steve looking healthier in each scene. “Our very own vet couldn’t let him go.”

Steve Was Saved in More Ways Than One

Clips showed Steve being tended to by the Happy Doggo veterinarian, where the two formed a close bond. The vet decided to make Steve an official member of his family.

“Steve just got adopted by the family who saved his life,” the text shared, with the caption adding, “He is still undergoing treatment for his injuries, but he already secured his forever home.”

Apparently, Steve already has his own cozy spot ready and waiting for him in his new home.

“As soon as his treatment is complete, he’s heading straight to his forever couch,” the caption concluded. He has no idea how loved he is about to be!”

Every litter of puppies is special, but a rainbow litter is especially wonderful.

In case you aren’t familiar, a rainbow litter occurs when one litter of puppies features several different coats and patterns.

This sweet Shih-Tzu named Lemon just had one of these rainbow litters, and viewers can’t get enough of her beautiful and diverse group of four puppies.

They are so tiny, but you can already see the versatility in their coats and patterns.

The litter includes three female and one male puppy, and their colors are blue, lavender, lavender parti, and blue parti.

It looks like their mom is a gold parti Shih-Tzu, but we aren’t sure about the sire.

It’s also interesting, which we learned in another video, that Lemon had what is called a free birth, which means she didn’t receive prenatal care from a medical professional.

What Are the Different Shih-Tzu Colors?

As we can see from this rainbow litter, Shih-Tzus come in a variety of colors and patterns.

The main Shih-Tzu colors are black, brown, white, tan, lavender, red, blue, yellow, silver, and gray.

Usually, a Shih-Tzu displays a combination of these colors, such as silver and white, black and white, or gold and white, but they also come in solid colors.

As mentioned above, these puppies are blue, lavender, blue parti, and lavender parti, which are considered rare.

For example, the blue Shih-Tzu results from the puppy inheriting a dilution gene from both parents that dilutes the black pigment.

Lavender is a combination of liver and dilution genes and does need both parents to carry a recessive gene, making this puppy very rare.

For the lavender and blue parti Shih-Tzu pups, this means their coats have two colors.

For blue partis, it’s blue-gray patches with a white background, and for lavender partis, it’s pale lavender patches.

Parti coloring is more common, but the lavender parti can be hard to find.

But no matter what color they are, Lemon’s puppies are all beautiful and special!

I’ve heard plenty of Parrots say things that sound almost human, but Haku, the adopted Cockatoo, apparently spent weeks trying to get one very specific message across before Mom finally cracked the code.

In the video, Haku keeps repeating the same phrase over and over. You can tell he means something by it, but translating Cockatoo is apparently not a beginner-level language course.

His human admits in the caption that it took weeks to understand what he was saying. She even jokes in the post that maybe Haku has an accent, and she simply needs more practice.

Honestly, I believe it.

Then, the breakthrough happens.

Mom finally repeats back what she thinks Haku has been saying, and his entire body changes. He lights up, starts flapping his wings, and looks so ridiculously relieved that I immediately understood why people in the comments were losing it.

One viewer described the moment as basically having a tiny dinosaur fighting to tell you he loves you, which might be the best summary of Cockatoo life I’ve ever heard.

Another comment focused on those happy wing flaps, imagining Haku practically screaming, “You finally got it!”

That’s exactly what his reaction looks like.

I love the idea that Haku has been patiently repeating himself for weeks, listening to Mom get it wrong, and thinking, “No. Again. We’ll try this one more time.”

Then suddenly she says it correctly, and he’s overjoyed.

I’d probably need weeks, too. Cockatoos can make the sweetest little sounds, but sometimes there seems to be an entire language happening underneath all those squeaks, whistles, and wonderfully garbled words.

Haku is an adopted Cockatoo who shares his home with another adopted Cockatoo named Momo, so I have to imagine Mom already speaks a decent amount of bird. Haku, however, appears to have added his own dialect.

Cockatoos are already dramatic enough without a language barrier. Add one misunderstood phrase, and apparently, you get several weeks of negotiations followed by the happiest little celebration imaginable.

The sweetest part is that Haku clearly cared whether she understood him. Whatever he was trying to communicate, he kept at it until the message finally landed.

And when it did?

Pure joy.

Why Do Cockatoos Copy Human Speech?

Cockatoos are highly social birds, and mimicking sounds can become part of how they connect with the people around them. Lafeber explains that Parrots can learn human speech through social interaction and may use familiar sounds as part of communicating with their human “flock.”

During the summer, dogs are spoiled with extra outdoor activities, treats and constant companionship. However, once fall rolls around, all of that fun starts to dwindle. As Jonathan Bensamoun, the CEO and founder of Fi-Next Generation Dog Collars, explains, dogs thrive with a routine, and when that’s abruptly interrupted, it’s normal for them to act out.

Your dog doesn’t understand if clocks are changing or the sun is going down earlier; they just know something is changing, and they’re not big fans of it,” Bensamoun says. “While they might start getting agitated, chewing items they shouldn’t or acting restless, it’s not that your dog is ‘bad’ or ‘acting out.’ They simply don’t understand why things are changing.”

4 Quick Ways to Shift Their Routine (Without Waking Up at 5 a.m.)

Even though your dog doesn’t know it, fall means schedule changes. While it disrupts their normal routine, that doesn’t mean it has to completely turn their world upside down. Here are four quick ways you can ease them into a new routine without much disruption or having to wake up before dawn yourself.

1. Prepare them ahead of time.

If you know your schedule is about to change, Dr. Nathaniel Rakestraw, a veterinarian at TelaVets.com, recommends preparing your dog ahead of time to avoid any unnecessary surprises. Once you know when school starts, the return to the office begins or when Daylight Saving Time occurs, Dr. Rakestraw recommends gradually altering your dog’s routine days before to help get them used to the new schedule.

2. Create predictable patterns.

Dogs love a good scheduled routine, and even though daylight is becoming shorter, that doesn’t mean they have to get rid of all their schedules. Mia Gray, a certified dog trainer and the Owner of Doggie Dreamz in Los Angeles, recommends adding a predictable pattern to your dog’s day, even if it’s just a small routine. Having some kind of structured routine can help dogs feel like the change isn’t so abrupt.

3. Add new enrichment activities.

You don’t need to wake up at 5 a.m. to shift your dog’s routine, but you can add some sort of enrichment or activity to their day. Dr. Rakestraw adds that even just 5 to 10 minutes of exercise before leaving for your day can help keep your dog active. Other enrichment activities like puzzle feeders can help with your dog’s mental enrichment too.

4. Let them rest.

While it’s easy to assume that more exercise can help a highly energetic pup that isn’t going out as much, this isn’t always the case. As Gray explains, dogs need rest too, and giving them the opportunity to relax can also give them a chance to learn how to transition from excitement to relaxation time. Give your dog plenty of space and cozy items to create their own lounging spot where they can rest when they’re tired.

How to Tire Out Your Dog When It’s Dark at 6 p.m.

Keeping your dog engaged during the fall doesn’t need to be a hassle. There are still plenty of ways you and your furry friend can get your daily exercise in, even when the sun sets early.

1. Give them a longer midday walk.

If you’re no longer taking long walks in the evening because it’s getting darker sooner, it’s time to consider a longer midday walk. Avoid taking night walks, and instead enjoy a midday adventure. Since the days are getting cooler, it’s a great time to bask in the sun and enjoy daylight along with your furry friend.

2. Try setting up a kibble hunt.

With the new season comes unfortunate weather. If the fall weather isn’t cooperating, enjoy the many opportunities you have inside of your home. Dr. Rakestraw recommends creating a kibble treasure hunt with your dog by hiding treats around your home and allowing them to find them. He says that you don’t just need physical exercise to tire out your dog; mental stimulation can provide the same benefits.

3. Go on a sniffing walk.

If you are heading out on walks during the day, it’s important to allow your dog to sniff around. While many dog parents may simply walk to let their dog use the bathroom, walks can also be used to tire out your dog without the need for long distances. Let your dog stop and sniff everything their heart desires, and you’ll find they’ll come back tired enough for the day.

The Essential Darkness Safety Checklist for Late-Summer Walks

One of the major concerns when walking a dog at night is lack of visibility. Bensamoun adds that low light is typically when most dogs become loose and lost. To help avoid issues, add reflective or lit gear to your dog, not just yourself. If your dog were to become separated, this makes it much easier for them to be spotted in the dark.

Even if your dog is trained to be off-leash, Dr. Rakestraw recommends keeping them on-leash when walking in the dark. Depending on where you live, he also suggests keeping in mind any surrounding wildlife that may begin to lurk once the sun goes down. If you haven’t already, make sure your dog’s microchip and ID information are up to date too.

The summer season is ending, and we are all feeling the change. However, you don’t have to let the change in routine affect your dog’s mental and physical well-being. With just a few slight changes, your dog can easily adapt to the new season and enjoy all of the perks that come along with it.

TikTok user @damon.elijah.enzo shared the clip of Luna casually walking around the kitchen, apparently completely unaware that she looks like she’s late for Potions class.

She’s already a striking dog, with the dark, almost wild-looking coloring agouti Huskies are known for. But when Luna turns her face toward the camera, you can really see it.

Agouti refers to a distinctive coat pattern rather than a separate type of Husky. Individual hairs can have bands of different colors, which creates a darker, beautifully textured appearance that can look almost wolflike.

Agouti Huskies often have dark faces and striking markings around their eyes, although every dog’s pattern is different. Luna just happened to hit the genetic jackpot and end up with what looks like her own permanent pair of spectacles.

And with a name like Luna?

Golden Retrievers are big fans of being the center of attention, and they love to get as much of it from their favorite people as they can. And they believe they should be the sole focus of all the attention, as Golden Retrievers are happy to be spoiled every second of every day. They’re just being cozy on the couch, appearing to watch something on TV, with Dad rubbing Mom’s feet. But right in front of both of them is Brew, who is also insisting Dad rub his feet, too. So he makes that happen, and while he’s getting attention now, too, he doesn’t seem happy that all the attention from both Mom and Dad is not just on him. Typical, silly Golden!

Do Dogs Really Get Jealous? 

Brew really is just the cutest boy, and he really does look like he’s being left out here. Experts say pups can feel jealousy or envy. 

According to the American Kennel Club, whether dogs can feel big emotions, including jealousy, like humans, is still debated. Science isn’t super convinced that pups have this ability, but dog parents have a very different outlook. 

The club explains that dog parents have seen examples time and again of their pups being jealous of their siblings, human family, and in silly and big moments of life. Your daily routine with your pet may feel like nothing special to you, but it’s a big deal to your dog. Those familiar rhythms help your pup know what to expect as well as remind them that you’ll always be there for them and they can rely on you. Because of that, they’re exactly the kind of things your pup is likely to remember because they’ve come to associate them with feeling safe, cared for and loved.

“Dogs are experts at pattern recognition, so they learn your routines very quickly and learn to anticipate the parts they love,” Farah says. “Knowing when their needs will be met reassures them that they don’t need to try to find other outlets themselves.”

Those consistent routines also help your dog feel more confident navigating day-to-day life. In other words, something as simple as sticking to a routine can become one of the ways your dog learns to trust you.

How Good You Smell to Them

To your dog, your scent is a little piece of you they can carry with them. While we might think nothing of letting our pups sniff us when we walk through the door, they’re taking in a whole world of information every time they do. In fact, it’s a thing dogs never forget about their owners.

“Their sense of smell is nearly beyond our comprehension, so sometimes we forget how much they use it to understand their world,” Farah says. That’s why she says that “letting them give you a good sniff to tell them about your day” can become a favorite habit for dogs. 

So the next time your dog gives you a thorough sniff after you’ve been out, let them take their time. For them, it’s more than a greeting, it’s one of the ways they reconnect with you because they love you.

How Good of a Playmate You Are A few minutes of one-on-one play can mean the world to your dog.

Having one-on-one time to play together can mean so much to your pup. No matter if you take the time to toss a ball around with them after you get home from work, squeeze in a little play session with them during your lunch break or have some fun together before you go to bed, those moments tell your dog that they’re worth your time and attention. “Dogs love it when people match their playful energy,” Farah says. So, if your pet wants to run around, join them. To them, it makes your relationship that much more special and is what dogs remember about their owners.

The way you speak to your dog—and the tone you use—can become closely associated with you. Your voice, in particular, can be one of the things your dog remembers most, especially when it’s paired with patience, kindness and positive experiences.

“Consistent, rewards-based training is a conversation. It’s a person saying, ‘I will always kindly guide you toward behaviors that make our life together work for both of us. I will never confuse you by giving you different answer to the same question, and I will never purposely cause you pain or discomfort,’” Farah says.

Not only can positive training be fun for your dog (they get treats, after all), but it can build trust between you. “They learn to love their training sessions,” Farah says.

Got a dog who gets excited when you come home? It’s OK to mirror that excitement back at them. In fact, by doing so it makes them feel extra loved and is something they will always look forward to. After all, dog’s have good memories, so they’ll come to expect that affectionate reaction from you when they see you.

“While there are some situations where we’d want to make greetings and departures less significant, for most dogs, showing them how glad you are to be back together is absolutely okay,” Farah says. “They’ve been waiting for you all day.”

That You Socialize Them

Your dog is your number one, of course, but dogs often enjoy having other pets around, too. In fact, just like people, they thrive being around others, so when you introduce them to other dogs and help them make furry friends, they appreciate that more than you know.

“Dogs are very social creatures,” Farah points out. Taking your pup to the dog park, setting up “play dates” and even fostering another dog can help show them that you recognize their need to socialize, she says. 

How You Let Them Explore on Walks Letting your dog stop and sniff can turn an ordinary walk into an exciting adventure.

You might not know it, but for your dog, a walk is about so much more than getting from one place to another. So when you let them take their time, you’re giving them the freedom to explore the world around them. That’s why Farah calls sniff walks “a gift” for dogs and may be one of the things your dog associates with you when they think about you.

“Imagine if a scent that may have been faint from indoors now has a source,” she says. “That’s what happens when dogs go on sniff walks. They figure out what direction you go when you walk somewhere without them. They learn where the big dog lives who passes your house every morning, or how long ago that dog last walked by when they weren’t watching.”

Because of all this, Farah says your dog will remember that you let them sniff on walks. In their eyes, you’re the person who lets them stop, explore and discover.

Finally met a Puli in the wild 🤩 Meet Luke, an 8-year-old Puli I found in Victoria, BC. Laura adores Luke, even though sometimes “he steals the show from me”. She made him a custom rain jacket out of marine hardware store fabric to keep all that wool dry. She also made a custom leash, since he managed to chew through the other ones. Luke also understands full sentences, which makes him smarter than some people I know. 🤭

The loyal and energetic Puli Dog comes from Hungary, where shepherds use them to herd sheep. They made great helpers because of their fast, nimble agility. As far as looks go, they’re known for their incredibly unique coats, which are long, tight cords that look a little like dreadlocks. From head to tail, these coils form all on their own, making them resemble moving rugs or mops!

Fully grown, a Puli Dog can reach up to 17 inches tall and 35 pounds, so they’re not big pooches—it’s just a whole lot of hair! After the breed nearly became extinct during World War II, dedicated breeders took action to bring them back from the brink.

These interesting pups are considered a rare breed you won’t see every day—unless you take a trip to Costco and end up in the floor mop aisle!

Why Dogs Repeat Certain Behaviors When They Learn It Gets Them Attention

Weee is such a cute dog, and it’s clear that her move to sit and wiggle when she wants to eat is a tactic that works. Dogs exhibit attention-seeking behavior because they learn it works. 

According to the American Kennel Club, attention-seeking behavior in dogs is “any action a dog performs to get a human to notice them.” The site goes on to explain that the action can be all sorts of behaviors, including mouthing you with their jaws, pawing you, whining, barking, or jumping on you… anything that gets your attention.

Sometimes the attention can be adorable, like what we see Weee doing in this clip, and other times, the behavior can be more negative. But the commonality is that the action gets their human’s attention.

If your pup is acting with attention-seeking behavior, and it’s something you’re looking to curb, there are some things you can keep in mind, according to the American Kennel Club. They suggest the best first step is not to give them attention, because even a negative response is still attention.

From there, you can reward alternative behaviors, ignore the bad ones, manage their environment so they’re less likely to seek negative attention, and make sure they get enough physical and mental enrichment.

What To Know About Chihuahua Puppies

Many of them claim they have a negative temperament.

All dogs have different personalities, and Chihuahuas are known for being small dogs with big personalities, but this doesn’t mean the entire breed is angry.

A lot of their temperament is shaped by how their pet parent handles them.

Chihuahuas have a guard dog mentality despite their very small size (they are actually the smallest dog breed in the world), which is why they sometimes get a bad reputation.

However, if they are socialized from a young age and trained properly, this won’t be an issue.

I absolutely love stories about dogs who seem completely uninterested in making friends until one very specific pup walks into their life. Butter, a Great Pyrenees and Husky mix, has apparently found that dog in Joon Poonie.

Butter usually prefers his own company. His human explains in the post caption that he’s happiest patrolling fences and being left alone, while Joon isn’t exactly the social butterfly of the neighborhood, either. She gets annoyed with most other dogs.

In the video, Butter is standing in the living room after learning he’s going to see Joon, and he immediately starts howling like he’s been asked to perform a love ballad.

This isn’t a subtle reaction.

His human jokingly calls it the song of his love, and apparently they even send videos ahead so Joon can hear that her boyfriend is on his way. I’m sorry, but that might be one of the cutest pre-date rituals I’ve ever seen.

Butter’s whole personality seems to change when Joon enters the conversation. The fence patrol can wait. Solitude is canceled. His girlfriend is coming over.

The best part is knowing how unusual this is for both dogs. Butter isn’t normally handing out affection to everyone he meets, and Joon has very selective standards of her own. Somehow, they choose each other.

I know exactly how sweet that kind of bond can be. My dog gets ridiculously excited when she realizes her best friends, Carrie and Marge, are coming over. The anticipation starts before they even arrive, and when they leave, she’s visibly disappointed that the party is over.

That’s why Butter’s howling gets me. Dogs might not define relationships the way we do, but they can make their favorite people and pups incredibly obvious.

His human says Butter is becoming more affectionate as he gets older, but Joon is clearly still his special girl. She even has her own little “awoo,” which makes this feel less like a playdate and more like two pups maintaining a musical romance.

I’d like to think Butter is simply making sure she knows he’s coming.

Dogs don’t have to adore every pup they meet to enjoy meaningful friendships. The AKC explains that many adult dogs are selective or tolerant rather than universally social, and they may genuinely enjoy spending time with familiar dog friends.

• Let them be selective. A few great friendships can suit your dog better than meeting everyone.
• Keep play comfortable. Watch both dogs and give them breaks before excitement becomes too much.
• Respect the friendship. Regular positive meetups can give both dogs something wonderful to look forward to.

Gosh. These two girls and their story truly broke all of our hearts this weekend. This has been a tough week for all of us, but the most tough for these two cats. Polly and Toes are both 12 year old girls who love affection. They are just looking for a soft landing to live out the rest of their lives, together. Bonded pairs are, and continue to be over looked. I’m hoping this video finds their next family. Polly and Toes haven’t been posted in the website yet since they are new, but you can still apply to adopt them at nawsus.org under the tab “adoption center” by filling out a cat adoption application. As a side note, I apologize for not posting so much the past few weeks. I’m trying to take care of my physical and mental health so that I can continue to show up for these animals. The TikTok from @franflight told the precious pair’s story and how they ended up at the shelter.

“Polly and Toes were surrendered at 12 years old due to absolutely no fault of their own,” the on-screen text explained. “Their [parent] became disabled, lost their home, and was forced to find a safe space for them. These two girls were clearly loved throughout their life. Not only by their [parent], but by each other.”

The two black-and-white cats are obviously close and supporting each other through this traumatic transition. Taken from the only home and parent they’ve ever known and now living in a chaotic and unfamiliar environment is overwhelming for these senior felines.

“They have leaned on each other through this difficult time,” the story continued. “They deserve to get out of the shelter together.”

There are tons of adorable, cool birds on the internet these days, but Furby, the Cockatoo, lands one of the top spots for his consistent display of complete cuteness. The video is one of many that showcases what his huge heart is hiding beyond that small, feathery build, and his “best friend” is at the receiving end of all that love.

Though Dad leaves for work daily, Furby spends most of his time with his devoted mom, who nurtures his curiosity while providing a safe space where he can be himself. Few Cockatoos make everyone swoon the way this guy does, which is exactly why his nearly half a million TikTok fans tune in.

When Furby’s mom, Robin, went away on a trip, he got all the time he wanted with his “best friend.” Everything was all well and good at first, until he had a bit of a meltdown when he wanted her back.

In one simple, resounding word: YES! Cockatoos bond very strongly with one person in the house. While they might have close relationships with others, like human siblings or friends, their primal instincts dictate their social bonds, making one special person their most common go-to.

Whether it’s for needs like food or cage-free time, or they know who’ll give them the attention they demand, caring for these amazing birds is a great responsibility. Not only do they live as long as 60 to 70 years in captivity, but their energy and one-on-one needs require someone willing to revolve life around them.

Furby is the perfect example of how great these feathered companions can be, but also how attached they become when their “best friends” or Robin (!) is gone. It’s a good thing he’s so cute!
