Where Jasper is more polite and works a little "smarter" per se, Orange prefers to launch himself fully over the gate in the "harder" version of events. While both do technically accomplish their goal of making it to the other side (literally) it is indisputably hilarious to see the different methods to the madness each cat takes. Whatever you want to call it, Athletic vs. Academic, Brains vs. Brawn, the cats are so funny in accomplishing their simple goal in such different ways.

Aside from watching them interact with the world and seeing their adaptability and reactions to things, there are several ways to gauge intelligence in your animals. Pets who pick up new commands and tricks are usually on the smarter side, and learning routines and behaving accordingly is another sign you can watch for. "Smart" animals also typically have excellent memories and even pattern recognition that you, the human, should be able to see.

If you're curious, there are little games you can play with your pets to see how smart they may be in actuality. Puzzle toys, hiding treats, and even custom "only to them" tricks can help you discern how smart your furry friend really is.

At the end of the day, it doesn't REALLY matter how "smart" your pet is, just that it's healthy, happy, and loved. And able to get over or through a gate when need be. That's pretty critical, too.

According to this article in the New York Times, the instinct to chase and carry a ball is rooted in something ancient: the primeval prey-carrying behavior of dogs' wild ancestors, who would take their kill back to the den to share or hoard. That soccer ball wasn't a soccer ball to him. It was dinner. And he had absolutely no intention of giving it up.

Some breeds are more wired for this than others — retrievers and spaniels, for example, have been selectively bred over centuries specifically for their retrieving instincts. But here's the part that might genuinely surprise you: Researchers have suggested that for some dogs, ball-chasing can become a true chemical addiction. The excitement of the chase triggers a rush of adrenaline that mimics the hormonal high of an actual hunt. Once that feeling kicks in, good luck getting the ball back.

A 2025 study published in Scientific Reports also found that toy-obsessed dogs behave similarly to humans with behavioral addictions like gambling and internet gaming. Two dogs in the study became so fixated on accessing their toys that they destroyed the box the researchers had locked them in. The lead researcher noted it was "a striking example of how far some dogs were willing to go to access the object of their desire." In other words — that soccer dog was never giving up the ball.

Which explains everything about what happened on that field. He was completely biochemically in the zone — and no amount of security personnel was going to interrupt that.

This little one is learning to swim with the same nervousness and anxiety that many human children face. Not all seals are born with an immediate instinct to swim, but Matcha is one brave seal pup.

The Seal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in the Netherlands writes:

“Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Matcha, our resident seal pup, as he experienced his very first swim at our rescue centre. The young seal pup showed remarkable bravery and aptitude during this important step in his rehabilitation. Matcha not only entered the pool but also demonstrated impressive independence by successfully climbing out on his own.”

An impressive 2.5 million viewers liked the post and are following Matcha's swim lessons. Nearly 400,000 viewers shared the video, and many rushed to the comment section, joking about the nervous seal pup.

Matcha likely knows he's a seal, but not all seals are born with expert swimming skills. Most are born with an instinct to kick and float, but moving through the water confidently isn't always innate.

Just like humans, seals practice swimming in shallow water, building stamina and learning how to breathe efficiently while in the water. They also need to learn how to navigate currents and develop hunting skills as they grow. No wonder Matcha is nervous with so much to learn.

An Arizona snake found itself at the center of an unusual wildlife encounter when a completely unbothered Owl perched itself on top of the slithering serpent. A picture of surprisingly peaceful coexistence, the Owl appeared neither aggressive nor fearful of the snake.

Opportunistic hunters by nature, Owls may not rely on snakes as their primary source of food, but they are known to swiftly consume them. Here, however, this Owl seems more interested in having a sunbathing companion than its next meal.

The video captures the unexpected interactions that can happen in nature, where even predators and prey can sometimes peacefully coexist without issue.

It's no surprise this wildlife video is taking TikTok by storm. More than 100,000 people have liked the video, which has been shared over 20,000 times.

For some viewers, the interaction between the Owl and snake symbolizes something bigger.

Some rescue dogs are so uniquely adorable that people immediately start trying to figure out what breeds could possibly make them look that way. Some may have the look of a Chihuahuabut a coat that’s not typical for the breed, or an interestingly small Dachshund who wasn’t what you would expect.

TikTok user Scott (@4evertails) shared a video of a very unique dog named Sherry, who is incredibly cute but a little confusing, because no one seems to know what breed she is. 

In the clip, Sherry is very excited to bounce and rub on someone; she's very happy, and we learn more about her as the clips change. She has a very interesting look to her—the face of a Beagle, some spots on her coat like a Cattle Dog, but the tail, butt, and wiggle like a Corgi.

In the comments, people had a lot of guesses about the pup's breed and just compliments for her in general. 

One person wrote, "She’s honestly ridiculously adorable. Commenting so that once she is in her forever home with her very lucky people, I will know."

Another shared, "Finally some Beagle love!!!! My cousins have fostered senior Beagles longer than I’ve been alive!! They’re the sweetest babies ever!"

Sherry might be a mystery in what her exact mix is, but according to experts, that's not really a big deal. 

Trupanion explains that it's not really necessary to know your dog's true genetic makeup for anything other than making some guesses about how big they'll be when they're fully grown. It's also nice to know which typical health issues might show up in certain dog breeds compared to others. 

The site explains that these dogs are a "wonderful blend" of different breeds when their pedigrees are unknown, and that there are some great benefits. With their unique and diverse blends, mixed dogs come in all sizes, shapes, temperaments, and qualities, making them an "appealing choice" for people looking to add a puppy to the family.

Since you don't know the mix, you'll have to determine your dog's exercise and grooming needs based on the pup rather than the typical needs of a specific breed. And your veterinarian can help, too.

TikTok user @ipetjaxon shared the hilarious clip, and it quickly became obvious that Jip Jip isn't a dog who believes in subtle communication.

While some pups quietly sit and wait for attention, Jip Jip has apparently developed a much more direct strategy. He knows exactly what he wants, and he's determined to make sure everyone around him understands the assignment.

Viewers were cracking up at how he made his demands.

One person joked, "We think he is making it clear what he wants."

That seems like a fair assessment.

There isn't much room for interpretation here. He has a goal, and that goal involves somebody immediately getting to work on the booty smacks.

Well, a lot of it comes down to the nature of felines.

Cats prioritize familiar scents as well as safe spaces over novelty (even when the novelty is an expensive cat toy or bed).

They don't know that all those jungle gyms and steps are designed for their bodies and skills and that those beds are quite comfy.

They do know that a cozy box or fruit bowl is safe and secure, and it's in an area where their beloved humans are.

Kitties also love the warmth and insulation a box provides (like we see with the second cat, who sits in the box on the back of the toilet).

It does take cats a while to warm up to new things, so hopefully, they do start using the dream cat room soon, but they know their first love will always be the bowl, the toilet box, and the baby's furniture.

Next up was Stevie, who appeared to be a yellow Lab mix. Stevie couldn't contain his excitement over the standing ovation and literally jumped for joy as soon as he walked in.

Rush the Greyhound gracefully entered the daycare and demurely showed his appreciation for the show of love from the daycare staff.

Before Rush was done receiving his full greeting, Friday clambored in and basically cut the line. The precious pooch clearly couldn't wait for his applause.

Holly the Hound mix was timid at first, but then totally embraced the party-like atmosphere and relished the attention.

And on it went, with each dog getting their own moment in the spotlight and loving every minute of it. Nola the Golden Retriever may have won the prize for most party energy, as she practically somersaulted through the welcome aisle.

The expression on every dog's face as they walked into such love and acceptance showed their sense of belonging, and the special welcome started their day off on the right paw.

Conditioning wild animals to rely on humans for food can be very detrimental to their necessary survival skills. It can also lead to negative or even aggressive interactions with the animals involved, which is very dangerous for their safety and well being.

Even though raccoons are very cute and it can seem fun to feed them, experts typically agree that it has more potential for harm than good. If you can't avoid it or if raccoons are finding themselves in food you're leaving out for other creatures (like outdoor cats, for example) it's best to maintain distance, never make direct contact, scatter the food around so it's not associated too closely with your home, and do not establish any sort of schedule that they could get used to.

Nobody warned this German shepherd about the danger. One moment, he was napping in peace. The next, a senior cat settled in beside him and launched what witnesses would later describe as a vicious assault.

She began grooming his ear with the calm authority of someone who had already decided this was happening. No negotiation. No warning. Just a senior cat, a patient dog, and a very one-sided grooming session.

When she paused, the German shepherd lifted his head slowly, turned to look at her, and his expression said everything a dog's face can possibly say: "I didn't say stop."

She resumed. He dropped his head back down.

In a Reddit post to r/germanshepherds, their mom captured how these two spend their time together. The German shepherd may have claimed the bed, but the cat claimed his body.

Before adopting my dog eight years ago, I was a proud mom of two cats (and still am). But that means that since my pup was a brand new puppy, she's grown up around cats, and along the way, she's picked up some of their habits. This video from @chiwiwi11945 on TikTok shows exactly how good this pup named Chiwee is at loafing like a true cat, probably because he learned from the best. Though he lives with a new family now, Chiwee was raised with two cats who taught him everything he knows about The Loaf, or the position that makes an animal look like an adorable loaf of bread.

He's already a pretty tiny dog, but tucking away his legs makes him look even smaller, which shouldn't even be possible. This little guy is so precious!

Some commenters are trying to convince his humans to give him new cat siblings, and my fingers are crossed that they're successful. He needs loafing buddies!

All cats love to stretch out sometimes, but often, when you see them relaxing, it'll be in that "loaf" position that Chiwee has so artfully mastered.

But why do they love cuddling up like that? According to the experts at PetMD, if your kitty is sitting with their paws and tails tucked in, it's a sign that you're doing a good job as their human because they feel like they can let their guard down around you.

“Several types of loafing have been described with different meanings, but the classic version is shown by cats that are comfortable in their surroundings,” veterinarian Dr. Bonnie Beaver told the site. “We can't actually measure 'happiness,’ but we can say that cats are relaxed when in this position. It would be much like when a person sits in a reclining chair." 

PetMD also notes that if you notice anything unusual about the way your cat is loafing, like hunching their bodies over or staying in that position for an extended period of time, it could signal that something is wrong, so a vet visit or call never hurts.

Mostly, though, loafing just means that your cat is chilling and content. It doesn't look very comfy to me, but apparently, it is for them!

Waffle is a golden retriever that has achieved something most Americans never do. Her passport history will make most seasoned travelers a little envious.

In a recent post on Reddit's r/goldenretrievers, Waffle's mom shared that she has now visited nine countries. Her latest itinerary took her through Canada.

Previously, she has set paw in Italy, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Vatican City and the United States. Nine countries is more than the majority of Americans will visit in their lifetime. She is still going and doesn't want to stop.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, 71 percent of U.S. adults have traveled internationally at some point in their lives. But they visit between three and four foreign countries in their lifetime.

One-fifth of Americans have visited only one foreign country. Waffle has done something most Americans never do: travel the world.

Waffle began her life in Europe, where crossing borders is easier and more common than in the United States. Americans usually travel to Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico.

Traveling internationally with a dog might sound complicated, but Waffle's mom explained most of her globe-trotting happened while living in Europe. She said, "We were living in Europe and you can just travel one country to the next with vaccinations and an EU pet passport. Now we live in the US."

Waffle has come to the States two times. Per her mom, once for vacation, and then when they moved. She came as an ESA (emotional support animal). That was six years ago. The rules have changed, but the lady retriever can now travel to Mexico and other neighboring countries to increase the number of places she has visited.

According to the American Pet Products Association's 2025 Dog & Cat Report, today's dog parents love to consider their pets in travel plans. Among owners who travel with their dogs, 74 percent took a plane trip with their pet in the past year, up from 68 percent in 2023.

Another proof that pet parents travel with their furry companions more: the American Hotel & Lodging Association reports a 20 percent increase in pet-friendly accommodations in recent years, a direct response to parents who simply refuse to leave their animals behind.

Waffle, in other words, isn't just ahead of the average American traveler. She's ahead of most dogs, too.

Reddit users loved Waffle and her adventures, and many would love to see a show or a travel diary. As summer vacation season gets underway, family road trips will soon be in full swing. And if you have kids, or remember being one, you know the backseat can become the perfect place for little disagreements to break out.

As one horse slowly moves toward the other, the second immediately snaps back in protest. A moment later, the roles reverse. Neither horse seems interested in starting a real argument, but neither appears willing to let the other have the last word either.

It’s a classic case of “don’t touch me” energy mixed with the reality that they clearly enjoy spending time together.

Of course, like many siblings or couples, these two seem to get along just fine when it really matters.

That’s what makes the original video so funny. For all the mock annoyance and dramatic reactions, these horses clearly enjoy each other’s company. In the TikTok from @itsreneesdisplay, a dedicated mama cat was feeding her four kittens when the camera panned over to show the fifth feline fur baby still in bed.

"POV: You wake up and realize you're missing meal time," the onscreen text read as the kitten slowly roused out of sleep.

The tiny feline looked around in a haze until it dawned on her that mealtime started without her. Once the kitten saw that her siblings were getting first dibs on dinner, she began mewing in protest, almost like she was saying, "Hey, save some for me!"

The kitten stumbled out of the cat bed as she made her way over to her mom, hoping to make up for lost time. She gave her mom some snuggles before squeezing her way in for her meal.

Followers related the scene to other classic oversleeping scenarios or those times when you're late to the proverbial party.

"Oh crap, I'm missing happy hour," one joked.

"When you wake late at the hotel," another remarked.

"When you wake up from a nap like, 'why didn't anyone come get me for dinner?'," a follower noted.

Kittens need their mother in those early weeks of life for nourishment, protection, and emotional and physical development. While these tiny fur babies are usually weaned by 8 to 10 weeks, they still need their mom to learn socialization and communication skills.

If a kitten is removed from their mother too early, they can experience developmental and social challenges such as weak bone development and behavioral issues.

In this little kitten's case, she obviously isn't ready to go off on her own yet and should probably get an alarm clock.
