Out in the open ocean, long before we ever understood it, something has been happening in the dark.

Sperm whales have been talking to each other in patterns that look surprisingly familiar.

A recent study published in the journal Proceedings B analyzed their vocalizations and found that these whales use structured sequences of clicks, often called codas, that follow rules.

Not random noise. Not simple signals. Patterns that start to resemble the building blocks of language.

What Scientists Are Actually Hearing

Researchers studying sperm whales have identified combinations of clicks that vary in rhythm, timing and structure.

These are not isolated sounds. They form sequences that change depending on context.

In human language, meaning often comes from the order of sounds. The same appears to be true here.

This study in particular suggests that whales may be combining smaller sound units into larger structures, a feature known as compositionality. This is one of the foundations of language.

There is still a gap. Scientists cannot yet translate these sequences into clear meanings, but the structure itself is hard to ignore.

And this is not the only study on sperm whales and their communication. Scientists have been trying for years to identify their vocalization, trying to find data that shows that these animals can talk just like humans do.

Two years ago, researchers at UC Berkeley used artificial intelligence to discover the sounds whales make. The video below is the product of that study.

They Are Not the Only Animals Pushing This Boundary

Sperm whales are not alone in showing advanced communication.

Dolphins, for example, use signature whistles that function almost like names. Each dolphin develops a unique call, and others use it to address them directly.

African gray parrots have shown the ability to understand words, colors, shapes and even basic concepts.

Dogs also fall into this category more than people expect. A well-known border collie named Chaser learned over 1,000 words and could retrieve specific objects by name. That level of vocabulary is comparable to a young child’s early language stage.

This Is Just the Beginning of the Story

There is still a lot scientists do not know. No one can yet “translate” whale communication into human language. The meaning behind specific sequences still remains unclear.

But the pattern is there, and once you notice it, it changes how you think about the animals around you.

The next time your dog responds to a word you thought was random, or reacts to a tone you barely noticed, remember this: communication in the animal world is not simple.

And now, in the deep ocean, something has been speaking in ways we are only starting to understand.

Oh, Donny. He tried to get away with a tasty treat, but his body language and obedient nature gave him away.

In this hilarious Instagram video, Donny, a "very big and white" Golden Retriever, has absconded with an off-limits treat and knows it. He responds sheepishly and oh-so-guiltily when his human calls his name, slinking slowly around the corner toward her. He can't even make eye contact with his mom, but after she asks him several times to show her what's in his mouth, Donny reveals it to be a Kit Kat bar (thankfully) still in its wrapper.

I can totally relate to Donny. I mean, who can blame him? Kit Kats are delicious, albeit dangerous for dogs like Donny.

Viewers tend to agree with one confessing, "I can’t fault Donny. I’d do the same."

Others were convinced that Donny was a Newfoundland or Great Pyrenees because of his unusual size and coat, but no, he's a Golden through and through.

A few fans wondered if Donny was connected to a recent crime.

Up For Grabs

Dogs stealing food feels personal—but it’s really not. They’re not being sneaky or “bad,” they’re just doing exactly what dogs are wired to do: smell something delicious and go for it—no guilt, no moral debate—just instinct.

Instead of trying to out-discipline it, however, the smarter move is to manage the situation.

First, remove temptation whenever possible. If food is within reach, it’s fair game. Counters, coffee tables, cooling turkeys—if you don’t want it eaten, don’t leave it accessible. This alone solves a surprising amount of the problem.

Second, make sure your dog isn’t operating on an empty stomach. A well-fed dog is still interested in food (always), but a hungry dog is on a mission. Feeding them before parties or meals can take the edge off that urgency.

Training also helps—especially teaching a solid “leave it.” The goal isn’t punishment, it’s teaching self-control. When dogs learn that ignoring food actually earns them a reward, you start to shift the behavior in a way that sticks.

You can also limit access during high-risk moments. If you’re cooking, hosting, or have kids running around with snacks at dog-eye level, it’s completely fair to give your dog a separate setup. A crate, another room, or a safe space—with something like a stuffed Kong—keeps them occupied and out of trouble.

There are also deterrent tricks (like noise-based “gotcha” moments), but they tend to work only for certain dogs—and usually only a couple of times.

This isn’t about “fixing” a bad dog. It’s about setting them up to succeed in a world that constantly smells like... Kit Kats.

Dogs sometimes need a few moments — or days — to warm up to a new fur baby sibling. When we brought home our Pug mix, our senior Dachshund wasn't exactly thrilled about having a baby brother. Diya arrived in a wicker basket as she was carried into her new home. The poofy puppy looked more like a massive cotton ball than a canine, thanks to her ultra-soft layers of feathery white fur. The TikTok from @life.with.a.landcloud showed the meeting unfold.

"The much-anticipated Boomer meeting his baby sister," the caption explained.

Boomer couldn't contain his excitement and didn't even wait for his mom to set the basket down. He ran right over and jumped up to sniff his little sis.

Once the pooches' mom placed the basket on the floor, Boomer immediately gave Diya hugs and kisses as his tail went into nonstop wag mode. The two canines embraced, overcome by the tender family moment.

Boomer and Diya looked exactly alike except for size. They resembled a giant cloud and a baby cloud that merged to make one giant ball of white, powdery fluff. Their lush double coats seemed to have no definitive outline, where their legs and ears disappeared into what looked like a giant puff of snow. When they were close together, it was hard to tell where Boomer ended and Diya began.

Followers fell in love with the fluffy family members and saw that they had an immediate bond.

"Big cloud meets a small cloud," someone noted.

"The definition of 'heartwarming',” another remarked.

Boomer stepped right into his big brother role, much to Diya's delight. These two Samoyed sibs are already off to a great start.

The 13-year-old Frankfurt, Indiana, horse is living his best life post-racing, and he's doing it in his own way.

"He does have quirks. He sits on his haunches like a dog, and he will do that often," trainer Buff Bradley told @lex18news.

Angus' distinct personality traits also include lying on the ground for "hours at a time" and "lounging like a house cat," which has garnered the former speedster the title of "terminally cool" among fans.

Though Bradley first worried something neurological might be causing these unique choices, the vet cleared Angus and sent him home, adding, "He's just quirky!"

Angus' Second Chance 

Once known as "The Player," the multiple-winner Angus was severely injured in 2018 and needed plates and screws, plus six months of recovery at LSU's Equine Hospital, which forced him to retire.

"I was just sick about it, and when it happened, I just ran to him… he's my buddy," Bradley said.

Luckily, the sweet horse already had an affinity for relaxing on the ground—something most horses don't normally do!

Today, you'll find Angus at the Kentucky Horse Park "working" as an ambassador, where his story inspires the masses. Bradley, who lives nearby, visits often and feels honored that more people get to know this incredible horse.

"I can't tell you how happy I am, it just chokes me up thinking about it," he said.

Kentucky Horse Park president Lee Carter is equally thrilled about the new addition, adding, "He's just the embodiment of everything we talk about here."

This just goes to show: Never judge a book (or a horse) by its cover. Angus is an accomplished racer on the outside, but inside, he's got a little puppy dog heart and a kitty cat mind who wants what we all want: purpose, fulfillment, and most of all, love.

Yet, just minutes after leaving the vet, the dog who could “barely move” at the clinic is suddenly doing something you didn’t expect at all.

That's exactly what happened to one pet parent on Reddit. They posted a video in the r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog subreddit that had the caption, “Coming at you live from the waiting room at the vet appointment that I had no choice but to make when my son claimed he was in so much pain he could barely move.”

The video shows a border collie mix. The same dog who had just been moving slowly at the clinic was suddenly throwing himself onto the couch, rolling onto his back, kicking at the cushions and digging in like nothing had ever been wrong.

Cured by the Couch

Vet visits are stressful. New smells, unfamiliar sounds, other animals, handling by strangers. Even confident dogs can shut down in that environment.

It happens often. On the way home from the vet, the dog barely moved, quiet in a way that made everything feel off. Then the door opened. The leash came off. And within seconds, he was sprinting across the room again. For a moment, it was hard to believe this was the same dog from the waiting room.

Can Dogs Actually Fake Things?

The 6-year-old long-haired Chihuahua arrived at Old Souls Animal Rescue when her family could no longer care for her. Cocomia quickly acclimated to life at the rescue sanctuary and gets around in a wheelchair, "drag bag", and even a skateboard.

The TikTok from @oldsoulsanimalres features the canine cutie showing off her skateboard moves like a pro. Cocomia whizzed around on her wheels with total confidence, as if she were made for this fun mode of mobility.

The rescue hopes to find a foster or forever home for the fur baby who can accommodate her needs and enjoy all the love she has to give.

"Cocomia will do best in a home that can give her lots of attention and help to manage her mobility needs," the caption explained. "This girl is still full of life, love, and lots of personality despite her special needs. She’s sure to make the perfect little companion for the right family!"

Cocomia Is Ready to Roll

The sweet Chi had some "drag wounds" and a missing toe when she first arrived at Old Souls, but she's recovering like a champ and nothing is slowing her down. She loves everyone she meets and has made some four-legged friends who are also rescue residents. Cocomia would make a wonderful addition to a loving family who would give her the life she deserves.

1. A can opener

If you want to make your dog feel happy, you may be surprised to learn that the sound of a kitchen gadget can do just that. Opening the refrigerator or the sound of kibble hitting their bowl are not exactly unexpected sounds that make your dog instantly happy. Those are obvious. Yet, Piwinski says a can opener coming out of the drawer or clicking onto a wet food container is low-key music to your dog's ears. "Dogs love to hear their pet parents get their breakfast or dinner ready," Piwinski notes. "Almost all dogs love this sound, and some may even drool when they hear it, as they know food is coming."

2. Ducks quacking and birds singing

What's one sound dogs like hearing that makes them happy? Ducks quacking and birds singing! While pet parents often associate a fascination with avian creatures with cats, dogs love them, too. In fact, Piwinski says quacking and birds singing can bring on a rush of joy for a dog. Why do dogs like the sound of birds? "This will activate their 'prey drive,'" Piwinski explains. "Some dogs will be more in tune to this and more interested than other dogs, but it’s rare that they will have a negative reaction to these sounds."

“What makes them unique is that although their coat is short, they still have a double-layered coat, making it ideal for swimming and other outdoor activities,” says Caitlin Cruz, head dog trainer at Pupford. “Their short coat is also less likely to produce allergens, which makes them a good breed choice for individuals prone to allergies.”

Beyond their coat, these low-maintenance pups are known for being a “bark-less” dog. In fact, rather than barking like typical breeds, they make a unique yodel-like sound. Because of that and due to them being highly intelligent, independent and curious, these short-haired pets are described as cat-like.

Some birthdays are low key and don’t need a lot of fan fare others deserve the full celebration treatment. When the world's oldest living gorilla turns 69? That's definitely one of those special ocassions.

Fatou the gorilla marked her big day earlier this week with a special vegetable feast at Zoo Berlin, where she's been living for more than six decades. The occasion was so special that even Guinness World Records sent birthday wishes. And the whole thing is pretty incredible when you stop and think about it.

"In human age, she would be more than a hundred," Philine Hachmeister, the spokesperson for Zoo Berlin, told reporters.

Here's where Fatou's story gets really fascinating. Legend has it she was actually brought from Africa to France in the late 1950s by a sailor who traded her to settle his bar tab. The zoo hasn't been able to confirm the tavern lore story, but what they do know is that Fatou arrived in West Berlin around 1959 when she was just about 2-years-old.

That was 67 years ago. In the wild, gorillas typically only live to around 40. Fatou has nearly doubled that, which is pretty phenomenal.

These days, Fatou takes things a little slower. Her eyes don’t work quite like they used to, though her hearing's still very sharp. Fatou's dealing with arthritis, and since she doesn't have teeth anymore, the kitchen staff cooks her vegetables to make them easier to eat. Sadly, her favorite berries are now off the menu—too much sugar.

But age hasn't dimmed what makes Fatou so special. It's not just that she's been alive for nearly seven decades. It's more about the way she carries herself.

"Fatou captivates visitors with her dignified manner," the zoo says. Hachmeister gets even more specific: "She looks at you and looks right into your soul. She has this dignity. She looks at you, and it's like looking at your grandma."

Honestly? The grandmother energy seems perfect since Fatou became a mother and grandmother during her time in Berlin. She's also become something bigger: an ambassador for western lowland gorillas, who are critically endangered in the wild due to climate change, poaching and habitat destruction.

Here's something most people don't realize: gorillas are actually "gentle giants" who mostly eat plants, form friendships that last a lifetime, and genuinely mourn the loss of others.

Let me introduce you to Talon, a Pacific parrotlet who's taken on the role of official hype man during his mama's routine kitchen cleanup sessions. And he's absolutely committed to the bit.

The video from @the_green_bird_brigade shows Talon sitting perched on his human’s shoulder, making incredibly accurate running water sounds while his human does dishes. Between sound effects, he throws out encouragement: "Baby bird! Good job, good job. A big baby bird. Good job. Good job! Baby bird."

The comment section was immediately charmed.

"He's his own hype man and I love it" somebody wrote, capturing Talon's energy.

"Now, if you could just teach Talon to do the dishes!" obviously the next logical step.

Here's what makes this so delightful: Talon's not doing anything particularly dramatic. He's just sitting there, being present, offering commentary, making sound effects. But that's exactly what a good hype man does. They show up to support. They give encouragement when needed and make the ordinary feel a little more special.

Pacific Parrotlets Are Small Birds With Big Personalities and Impressive Vocal Skills

Pacific parrotlets are often called "pocket parrots" because they're tiny enough to theoretically fit in a shirt pocket. Don't let the tiny stature fool you, these birds pack more personality per ounce than almost any other species.

They're curious, they're fearless and they carry themselves with the confidence of a much larger bird. One description calls them "large bird energy in a small bird's body," which fits perfectly.

Pacific parrotlets can learn to mimic words and phrases with practice. They are also known to vocalize throughout the day with chattering sounds. They're relatively quiet by parrot standards—perfect for apartments—but loud enough to give a running commentary on all activities.

Like doing dishes, for instance.

Talon's just being a good bird. Sitting there, making water sounds and offering encouragement. Being the exact hype man everyone deserves.Good job, Talon. Good job.

If there's anyone strong enough to tell a super-cute dog "no," I'm not her. While my Corgi is adorable in her own right, I'm weak when my senior Staffy gives the sad eyes routine. So, whenever I see another precious pup under the Bully umbrella who also uses those peepers to convey what they want, I can't possibly go on with my day without petitioning on their behalf!

This has never been truer than with fellow Pit Bull, King Theodore, and it's not only because of his incredibly rare, long-haired gene. This is a case for why Mom should let Theo have a cat friend (or two) and why I'm siding with him not leaving without one!

The thing about Theo is, he's really special (as if you can't tell by looking at him), and a special boy deserves special things.

With his incredibly cool mohawk/mullet-styled hair that looks like a lion-looking theater wig, the fluffiest ears in all the land, and the classic Pittie sad eyes, I'm not sure how Mom can possibly deny the King of a furry feline friend. Would it help if I lent my Staffy to join Theo's silent plea?

It's a good thing Theo's pup sibling, Princess Rosie, isn't there to beg with him. Two Pit Bulls with a mega-rare "fluff" gene are pretty remarkable, and I'm sure they're double the trouble! Some referred to Theo as a "domesticated hyena," while others joked he looks like "Dog the Bounty Hunter," but I say he's just plain adorable.

When you put them together, the King and Princess are the epitome of cuteness overload. I actually cannot with these costumes, which will be a core memory for me! This would definitely get me to adopt a cat for the dogs.

Theodore and Rosie's unique long locks are all thanks to genetics. The rare recessive genetic mutation, the FGF5 gene, is inherited from both parents (one from each), and it controls hair growth. If you've never seen another long-haired Pittie before, congrats—now you have!

Maybe Mom didn't give in and adopt a cat this time, but I'm sure the fluffy-haired boy (and his sis) will make use of those big, sad eyes again soon!
