In 1985, Dolph Lundgren burst onto movie screens as the towering Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, instantly becoming one of the most recognizable action stars of the decade.

More than 40 years later, Lundgren looks quite different from the imposing 28-year-old who stepped into the ring opposite Sylvester Stallone, but the actor is still in impressive shape as he approaches his 69th birthday.

Lundgren, 68, was photographed in Philadelphia on Sept. 19 while on the book tour for his new memoir from Harper Collins titled “Fights Worth Fighting: Finding Strength in Struggle.”

In the new photos, the Swedish actor sported slicked-back gray hair and sunglasses while wearing a fitted white T-shirt with black trim and light-colored pants. One shot captured him smiling and waving at the photographer.

The casual T-shirt also made it pretty clear that more than four decades after Rocky IV, Lundgren hasn’t exactly abandoned the gym.

That shouldn’t be surprising. Lundgren recently told Muscle & Fitness that he still trains three times a week, combining weight training with karate. He said maintaining muscle becomes especially important with age and credited strength training with helping him through his cancer treatments.

The actor’s appearance comes after an extraordinary health battle that began when a cancerous tumor was discovered in his kidney in 2015. His cancer later spread, and at one point Lundgren was given a grim prognosis. After seeking a second opinion, however, doctors identified a mutation that allowed him to receive a different treatment, which dramatically shrank his tumors.

Lundgren announced in late 2024 that he was cancer-free.

According to Harper Collins, his experience as a cancer survivor is a major part of “Fights Worth Fighting,” which traces his unlikely path from chemical engineering student and martial arts champion to international movie star while also exploring his struggles with fame, family and cancer.

Lundgren’s Hollywood breakthrough came when he beat out thousands of other hopefuls to play Drago opposite Stallone in Rocky IV. He went on to star in movies including Masters of the Universe, The Punisher and Universal Soldier, before reuniting with Stallone for The Expendables franchise and eventually reprising Drago in 2018’s Creed II.

And Lundgren isn’t slowing down. Along with his memoir and book tour, the actor will be the subject of the upcoming documentary Dolph: Unbreakable, which begins streaming Oct. 6.

The Traitors: New Blood has arrived! Throughout the season, Mike Bloom will speak with someone from the star-studded cast who was murdered or banished on the iconic Emmy-winning reality series.

The Traitors is a game that’s all about clouding the minds of others with deception. And, for some, that deception began before even stepping foot in the castle. Kim Daily decided to lie about her law career before arriving in Scotland, worried about how people would see her. So she came in as a college basketball coach, hoping that team-oriented nature and motivational skills would make her a valuable Faithful. And, unfortunately, that’s exactly why Joe Vanella and Tomica Adams murdered her first. Looking at initial victims, they were worried about people who would be able to lead the charge against them at a Roundtable. And, given her apparent resume, Kim was perfectly qualified for the job of first boot. So she soon found herself standing on a dock, in front of two masked “Accomplices,” benched in the first quarter of the season.

Now out of the game, Kim talks with Parade about how much her fake job contributed to her elimination, who she most suspected as a Traitor by the time she was eliminated, and how she almost had her hand on a Shield in the first mission.

Nobody wants to be the first boot. But going into what would be your final night in the game, did you have any idea it would be you?
By the time I was out there, I knew what was going on. But by the time when I got the letter, oh, I was I was shocked to high heavens. I had no idea. Did not think that was going to happen. I actually thought that the coast was clear. I thought I was about to get recruited to be a Traitor and go ahead and go get a full night’s sleep that night. What a twisted turn of events!

So what was your reaction when you found out that one of the reasons Joe and Tamica wanted to murder you was because, given your fake job of college basketball coach, they were worried you could give a locker room speech at the Roundtable that could lead to their demise?
It’s true. And I think that I could have said that I was a baker from Kentucky, and they would have been like, “She is going to bake a cake that’s going to get us all killed.” I think the coach cover didn’t help, but I don’t think that it was the reason why what happened happened.

Well then, let’s talk about this coach cover. When you didn’t want to tell the truth about being a lawyer, why did you specifically settle on that?
I actually ran cycles before I left for Scotland on, “What do y’all think is most convincing?” People have commented throughout my life on my speech patterns, on the way that I walk into a room, on the way that I carry myself. And so there’s certain things I think it would have been a little unbelievable. I do make, unfortunately, a very believable coach, and I wanted that consistency. You don’t know how many lies you’re gonna have to keep up with on the show, and so I wanted a cover that I naturally fit into, and that was the one that I landed on. If anybody has any other ideas, I am happy to hear them! [Laughs.] Honestly, I’ve been racking my mind for months as to what could have been different. But I think I would have to be raised differently and have different experiences in life in order for the outcome to have been different.

Were there any times you came close to revealing you were actually a lawyer? Or when people were on to your actual job?
Absolutely. So there was one instance where Michael was signing something. And I don’t know what he was signing, but I was like, “Oh, just sign it like a pleading!” And no one says that unless you’re a lawyer. And I was like, “Damn it, Kim!” But there was another. There were two times it happened. Once I was in the kitchen and Arissa came in. It seems like she had just met Michael, and she was like, “Speaking of lawyers, you look like one.” And very quickly, I said, “I get that all the time. If you all have been watching women’s college basketball since the ’90s, you should recognize Sean Miller was the first to don a suit like this on a basketball court.”

So I went on this whole spiel about the rise of women’s basketball and women wearing men’s wear. They ate it up. And since probably part of her plot to get me off the show, Katie was like, “Really, a coach?” To which I responded, “Why does everyone keep asking me that? Yes, I’m absolutely a coach.” I made up a lie about how many years or X, Y, and Z. And I’m grateful for my cast member Madeline because she graduated from the University of South Carolina, and every women’s basketball coach knows that South Carolina women’s basketball dominates. So I’m gonna go with it. “You graduated in 2022? Yeah, they won the championship that year!” And then people left me alone because I know what I’m talking about because I’m a coach.

Who was the top of your Traitors suspect list by the time you were murdered?
Joe was one main suspect for sure. I kind of suspected about half the cast, to be honest with you. But Joe was at the top of that list, and I was still sussing everybody else out before I got caught in a trap.

What was it about Joe specifically?
I spent a lot of time with Joe during filming. He was the person I sat next to on the train. He was the person that I rode to the castle with the first time. And that was part of my goal: Get to know how people are from the beginning, and then see what changes happen once those blindfolds come off. And once those blindfolds came off, all of a sudden I was the most interesting thing in the world to Joe. I’m an interesting person. I can’t get enough of myself. But you seem to be doing a little bit of snooping. You seem to be trying to buddy up with me. I know I’m funny, Joe. I’m not that funny, my guy! So I was like, “This is some suspicious behavior. What’s going on here?”

What about Tomica?
She was on my radar, but further down. So I would say I suspected probably 10 people. She might have been about number eight.

Who were you working with closest by the time you were murdered?
Abby L. and I had just started to form a bit of an alliance, and so we were filling out, watching where everybody else went, deciding, “We’re gonna try to get a little close.” I was getting to know Jay, who I really can’t wait to see all that became of Jay once I left the castle. I have heard some things! And then Tomica is someone that I’m just naturally drawn to. But you can’t get too comfortable because it is a game of treachery and deceit.

Well, something that could have made you feel comfortable is a Shield. Did you ever debate going for one in that first mission?
Quiet as it’s kept, I actually touched the Shield in the challenge.

Really?!
I pulled myself up by the straps and did an excellent upper body workout. I got on the boat. I started to undo the things. It was getting hot. Felt like I was gonna pass out. Couldn’t access it easily. At that point, I’d been up there for a minute. I’m like, “I’m taking too much time away.” I feel like there’s a target on me. I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to cover up something. I’m a team player, Coach Kim. Coach Kim ain’t no threat! Some people that need a Shield are those who pose a threat. I’ll leave it. That’s how Madeline got the Shield. I knew my name would be on the chopping block. I didn’t think it’d be on then.

Joanna Gaines celebrated an emotional family milestone as her son Duke Gaines marked his senior night. The Fixer Upper star shared a rare photo on her Instagram Stories showing Duke, 18, standing on a football field with his parents, Chip Gaines and Joanna. 

Wearing his blue-and-white uniform, Duke held a gift bag while his mom carried a bouquet of flowers. “Senior night,” Joanna wrote over the photo, shared on her Instagram Story on Sunday, September 20. See the photo here.

The occasion comes as Chip and Joanna adjust to having several of their children entering adulthood. The longtime couple shares five children: Drake, 21, Ella, 19, Duke, 18, Emmie, 16, and Crew, 8.

Duke turned 18 on May 23, making senior year another major milestone for the family. He’s currently a senior at Valor Preparatory Academy in Waco, Texas, the same school his older brother Drake attended before heading off to play college baseball at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, according to The List.

Jim Morrison wrote one of The Doors’ biggest hits after ending a three-year relationship, with the song becoming one of the band’s most popular tracks while helping shape several musical genres.

“The End” is largely known as one of The Doors’ standout tracks of their career. It was released as part of their self-titled debut album and was recorded as nearly a 12-minute long track. Despite its infamy, the song never charted because it was not released as a single.

Morrison gave the track a unique backstory that went beyond its original breakup theme. The Doors singer dated Mary Werbelow before he joined the band. According to the St. Petersburg Times, the two met at Clearwater Beach in the summer of 1962. Werbelow was there with a friend when she caught Morrison’s interest; the future rock star had lost a bet, and they soon developed a relationship.

For three years, the two dated, but kept their relationship away from the public and never shared any real personal details. Werbelow even traveled with Morrison from Florida to Los Angeles. The two would ultimately break up, with Morrison having penned “The End” about the ordeal.

“Every time I hear that song, it means something else to me,” said Morrison to Rolling Stone.

“It started out as a simple good-bye song… Probably just to a girl, but I see how it could be a goodbye to a kind of childhood. I really don’t know. I think it’s sufficiently complex and universal in its imagery that it could be almost anything you want it to be.”

The track would take on a new life and evolve over the next few months as The Doors began performing it at Whisky a Go Go. It became a much longer track, with Morrison having changed some of its improvised lyrics.

The singer failed to appear during a performance, and the band found him tripping on acid. They hauled him to the stage, and Morrison sang “The End” earlier in the set, shouting the lyrics “Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to f–k you!” The new lyrics had the crowd going wild, but also had them fired from Whisky a Go Go.

Many interpreted themes of death in Morrison’s lyrics and living life as freely as possible. Writer John Densmore once commented on how the singer explained the track’s true meaning.

“At one point, Jim said to me during the recording session, and he was tearful, and he shouted in the studio, ‘Does anybody understand me?'” he explained.

“And I said yes, I do, and right then and there we got into a long discussion and Jim just kept saying over and over kill the father, fuck the mother, and essentially boils down to this, kill all those things in yourself which are instilled in you and are not of yourself, they are alien concepts which are not yours, they must die.”

Critics tagged the song as a precursor to the gothic rock genre and helped shape progressive rock. The track was once listed on the Rolling Stones‘ “Greatest Songs of All Time” list and considered to have one of the best guitar solos.

When The Brady Bunch aired in the early 1970s, Barry Williams’ character Greg Brady had dreams of becoming a pro athlete or a rock star. So fans were surprised to find that 14 years after the original series ended, the eldest Brady brother had a career as a doctor when he returned for the TV movie A Very Brady Christmas as well as a subsequent 1990 drama series.

During a September 2026 fan appearance at RetroCon in Philadelphia, Williams, 71, was asked if he felt Greg’s occupation as an obstetrician/gynecologist was in character for him.

“Did you expect Greg to grow up and become Johnny Bravo?” Williams cracked.

The actor, who moved to Branson, Missouri, to do a musical variety show decades after The Brady Bunch, then explained how Greg’s career came to be, crediting producer Lloyd Schwartz for the idea.

“We first were introduced to that when we did A Very Brady Christmas, and I thought Greg, I saw kind of like filling [patriarch] Mike’s (Robert Reed) shoes at some point,” he shared. “You know, he  was protective of his brothers and sisters and kind of looked out for them. Kind of the leader and a caretaker, I guess, if you will. So it would make sense to me that Greg would grow up to take care of people and, you know, as a doctor, and so I thought it was a pretty good fit and kind of straight and established … So I thought it was a pretty, you know, pretty good fit.”

“I’m not sure I bought Bobby as a race car driver,” Williams added of the occupation of his co-star Mike Lookinland’s character in the 1988 holiday movie.

The Brady Bunch aired from 1969 to 1974 on ABC. During the original series run, Greg became obsessed with being a major league baseball pitcher and considered dropping out of school to pursue that dream. Other episodes featured him working on a songwriting career and an audition to be the “new” rock star Johnny Bravo. Even in his junior year in high school, Greg was clueless about his future career goals. In the season 4 episode “Career Fever,” he wrote a fake essay about wanting to be an architect like his dad.

Williams once revealed that he was happy to find out how Greg ended up.

In a 1988 interview with the Kennebec Journal, he revealed he only agreed to do A Very Brady Christmas after approving the script.

“It was a good experience, working with people I like a lot,” Williams said, according to MeTV. “I’m glad we’re doing a reunion because it somehow kind of legitimizes all of those early years. It almost makes them current. I can go my whole life and never do another Brady Bunch episode, and it will be okay because Greg has a kid and he’s a doctor and he’s married. It answers the question ‘Whatever happened to Greg Brady?'”

Brooklyn Beckham is paying tribute to longtime friend Presley Gerber, following the model’s death on Sunday.

Taking to his Instagram Stories on Monday morning, Beckham shared a sweet photo of the two of them captioned, “I am so heartbroken, Presley you were the kindest and we are going to miss you so much x we love you.”

The tribute comes a day after Gerber’s family confirmed the news of his passing via a statement obtained by TMZ, in which they asked for “privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

Both the same age, and the sons of famous parents, the two have seemingly been in the same friend group, having attended the same events and gatherings over the years.

In 2018, they were seen hanging out together at Coachella, E! News reported at the time, and Beckham also attended the 18th birthday party for Kaia Gerber, Presley’s younger sister, where he was also present, according to Vogue.

More recently though, Gerber supported Beckham at the launch party for his hot sauce brand Cloud 23 in 2024. Gerber’s model mom Cindy Crawford and dad Rande Gerber also attended the party, per the Daily Mail. The photo Beckham shared in his tribute post to Gerber was from the party.

Nicola Peltz, Beckham’s wife also took to her Instagram Stories on Monday, sharing a photo with a similar sentiment.

“I am truly devastated, Presley was pure light in this world, he had the kindest heart,” she wrote in part. “I feel so lucky to have had him in my life.”

While exact details around Gerber’s cause of death have not been revealed, it’s been confirmed that he died at a rehab facility, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. An autopsy has yet to be completed.

Gerber was open about his struggle with addiction on social media. In a since-deleted post from December of last year he shared, “The benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life,” and also disclosed that he was taking several depressant medications, including Buprenorphine, Xanax and Valium, to treat panic attacks.

However, he ended his post on an inspiring note, hoping to help others.

“So you feel like you’re not alone, because that is how I feel most of the time, and I have a feeling that if I say all of this, a lot of people will at least know that there’s someone else going through it,” he said.

Rewatching early seasons of classic TV shows usually brings a dose of nostalgia, but Friends fans might spot a surprising detail hidden right in plain sight.

Long before the series settled into its familiar groove, a memorable character made their screen debut, played by an entirely different actor. Their role was quietly recast immediately after that first appearance.

According to The Daily Express, the first time Friends viewers actually saw the character of Carol was in the episode, “The One Where Underdog Gets Away.” The actor playing the role? Anita Barone.

Barone was the first actress to play Ross Gellar’s (David Schwimmer) wife, Carol Willick. The character divorced Ross and eventually married Susan Bunch (Jessica Hecht).

According to Express, Willick chose to exit the series early on to pursue more substantial roles rather than a recurring supporting part. Coming so early in the show’s run, she had no way of knowing that Friends was about to evolve into a massive, global cultural juggernaut.

The role was quietly recast with Jane Sibbett taking over. She would play Carol through the end of season seven in 2001.

Screen Rant reported that Barone had initially auditioned for one of the show’s three female leads, roles that eventually went to Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow. Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry rounded out the cast.

Ironically, Sibbett also auditioned for one of the show’ female leads. She was offered the role of Rachel, the actress told News.com.au.

“I actually was up for another character. They wanted me to be one of the main six,” Sibbett revealed. “It was actually Rachel but I usually don’t tell people that because Jen; there’s no one who could’ve done it like Jen.”

However, Sibbett was pregnant at the time, and worried that would impact her casting. She admitted, “I asked them (agents) if they’d told the producers I was pregnant (at the time) and they said, ‘Oh no, we thought we’d tell them later.’ And I said, ‘No, you’ve got to tell them now.’”

“So obviously they (producers) said it wouldn’t work out. However, I have no regrets, my goodness, there’s no way anybody could have come close to what Jennifer Aniston did with Rachel. She was so perfect.”

Barone would go on to play Jeff Foxworthy‘s wife, Karen, during Season 1 of The Jeff Foxworthy Show on ABC. However, when the series moved to NBC for Season 2, the role was recast with Ann Cusack.

Jane Sibbett went on to make the role of Carol Willick an unforgettable piece of Friends history, and Anita Barone’s brief stint remains a fascinating “what if” for television buffs. Though Barone missed out on the historic decade-long run of Friends, her single-episode appearance lives on as one of the ultimate hidden trivia facts in sitcom history.

Major television networks are taking a united stand after President Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House.

ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, Fox News, and CNN announced Monday that they will not provide television pool coverage of Trump’s events after CNN was removed from its scheduled pool duties. The decision means the networks will not provide the shared camera feed that typically allows television outlets to cover presidential appearances.

“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting,” the outlets said in a shared statement.

The move comes just days after Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were being banned from the White House, accusing the outlets of reporting what he called “fake news.” The administration began enforcing the ban Saturday, when journalists from the three organizations were denied entry to the White House and had their press access revoked.

The three outlets are now taking the dispute to court. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico announced Monday that they are suing the Trump administration, arguing that the White House’s actions violate their First Amendment rights.

“The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a ‘ban on the free press.’ The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask,” White House Correspondents’ Association president and Fox News anchor Jacqui Heinrich said in a statement Friday.

Heinrich continued, “This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office. The WHCA stands in defense of our colleagues at CNN, MSNOW, and POLITICO who are being singled out for doing their jobs.”

Released in 1987, Can’t Buy Me Love helped put Patrick Dempsey on the map. He plays Ronald Miller, a high school outsider who sees an opportunity to become popular when he pays cheerleader Cindy Mancini, played by Amanda Peterson, to pretend to be his girlfriend.

Actress Julia Stiles, 45, has her hands full these days, juggling life as a busy mom of three boys and crushing it as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, a show she’s self-admittedly “obsessed” with. But once things settle down a bit, perhaps with a Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy perched on her mantel, Stiles has her sights set on another surprising dream: directing a music video for one of her favorite bands.

Stiles dished on her future (and her past) while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show, in an interview airing on Monday, September 21 (check your local listings). As host and music icon Jennifer Hudson praised Stiles’ moves on the dance floor, she said it was clear Stiles is a music fan.

“I love music,” Stiles beamed. “I do not play an instrument. But I absolutely love music.” So much so, she said, that when she was a teenager growing up in New York, she would walk around the city “with my headphones on and I’d, like, imagine music videos and then I’d take my camcorder and I (tried) to make music videos.”

Hudson then asked Stiles which artist she’d love to direct a music video for, and the 10 Things I Hate About You actress had an immediate answer. “Haim, the band,” she blurted out. “Oh ladies, if you’re listening, I’m here! I’ll be available after Dancing with the Stars is over.”

“After I win the Mirrorball trophy,” she teased, and then backpedaled, “No, no, no, I’m in it for the journey!”

Haim is a pop-rock band of three sisters — Alana, Danielle, and Este — who’ve been making music together since they were kids. They skyrocketed to fame when they toured with Taylor Swift and, in 2021, became the first all-female rock band nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys.

“Yeah, I think they’re amazing and they’re great in their music videos,” Stiles told Hudson. “They are often in them, singing and lip-syncing and performing, and I think their music videos are really cool. I watch them all the time. That would be fun, ladies!”

Stiles, her pro partner Ezra Sosa and their fellow contestants will be back on the dance floor for the second week of Dancing with the Stars on Tuesday, September 22, from 8 to 10 p.m. Eastern.

Celine Dion is back onstage, back in Paris, and apparently not quite ready for the show to end when the curtain falls.

After performing the third show of her highly anticipated Paris residency on Friday, September 18, the singer had an unexpected encore waiting for her outside her hotel. Dion climbed barefoot onto the hood of a parked BMW, where she sang and danced with a crowd of fans gathered outside.

And yes, there is video.

Dion, 58, was captured hopping onto the black car before removing her slippers and settling onto the hood as fans surrounded the vehicle. When her 1995 French-language hit “Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore” began playing, she immediately joined in.

The crowd sang along as Dion swayed to the music, tapped her feet and conducted her fans from her very unconventional stage. At one point, she even stretched out across the hood of the car before getting back up and continuing to dance.

The spontaneous moment ended with Dion clapping along with the crowd and making a heart shape with her hands before saying goodbye to the fans.

It was a fittingly joyful moment for the singer, who has spent years working toward her return to the stage.

Dion kicked off her 26-show Paris residency on Sept. 12 at the Plenitude Arena in nearby Nanterre, marking her first full concert in more than six years. Her live career was interrupted first by the COVID-19 pandemic and then by her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that can cause muscle stiffness, painful spasms and mobility problems.

Her return to performing has been an emotional one. During the opening night of her residency, Dion became visibly emotional just seconds into the first song before telling the audience that she had made a promise to come back.

The singer has also made it clear that her fans played a major role in bringing her back to the stage. Ahead of the residency, Dion said the performances were a way to show her longtime supporters how much she had missed them.

The feeling appears to be very much mutual.

Dion’s Paris residency is scheduled to continue through May 2027, giving fans plenty more opportunities to see the superstar on stage.

Halle Berry noticed Zendaya’s Emmys pixie cut, and she loved it.

Berry, 60, shared on Sunday, Sept. 20, that she talks to Zendaya, 30, and called her “my little sweetheart.” She also said she hopes the two of them find a project to do together someday. Berry spoke at a Create & Cultivate event in downtown Los Angeles focused on menopause, aging and women’s health.

The Emmys Look That Started It

At the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, Zendaya walked the red carpet in a custom Prada dress covered in silver sequins, with her hair cut into a pixie much like the one Berry made famous. She had shown off the shorter cut on a night out with two Euphoria costars shortly before the Emmys. Her hairstylist, Coree Moreno, described the Emmys version as a reimagined pixie, styled with texture and lift.

Berry shared that she loves everything Zendaya is doing and thinks the actress is changing the game for her generation. She said she felt honored that Zendaya paid homage to her and called the gesture sweet.

The Chicago Bears had some unusually good news to share on Friday. By Sunday afternoon, that news had taken a very different turn.

Ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears announced that, for the first time since Week 7 of the 2022 season, their roster was injury-free.

“For the first time since Week 7 of the 2022 season, we do not have a single player with an out, doubtful or questionable designation on our injury report,” the team wrote on social media Friday.

It was a rare bit of good news for a team that has dealt with its share of injuries over the years. Unfortunately for Chicago, that pristine report didn’t even make it through the weekend.

During Sunday’s game at Soldier Field, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a right hamstring injury in the fourth quarter while scrambling near the goal line. Williams went down without being hit, appeared to be in significant pain, and was unable to put weight on the leg. He was eventually helped off the field and taken to the locker room on a cart.

Williams was ruled out for the remainder of the game, with backup Tyson Bagent taking over at quarterback.

The injury came during a defensive battle against the Vikings, with Minnesota ultimately beating Chicago 9-3. Williams finished the afternoon 15-for-26 passing for 138 yards and an interception, while also rushing for 42 yards on five carries.

After the game, Bears head coach Ben Johnson said the team would know more about Williams’ injury Monday following further evaluation. Johnson said Williams was in “good spirits” and expressed relief that the injury did not appear to involve his knee, though he noted that a hamstring injury could still be significant.

“We’ll see how bad it is tomorrow and we’ll go from there,” Johnson said after the game.

Williams is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the hamstring injury, and there is early optimism that he suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain. While generally considered the mildest form of a muscle strain, Williams may not be ready to go in just eight days when the team is scheduled to host the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football on Sept. 28.

For now, the Bears will have to wait for the MRI results before knowing whether Williams will be available against Philadelphia. Either way, the team’s perfectly clean injury report didn’t stay that way for long. Just two days after announcing their healthiest roster in nearly four years, Chicago watched its starting quarterback leave the field on a cart.

Having a hard conversation is only made more difficult when your conversation partner is combative. If you’re trying to speak about a serious topic or disagreement with someone who is in this state—meaning they are argumentative, defensive and ready to fight—it’s unlikely that you’ll ever come to a calm resolution.

That being said, what is the best way to deal with this type of person? Is it possible to shut down their aggressive behavior and get them to a calm enough place to maturely address the issues at hand?

To find out, Parade spoke with Dr. Cindy Lin, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist and the President of the Bay Area Psychological Association. According to her, there is one phrase that can instantly shut down a combative person, which will emotionally reset them and get them ready for a calm conversation.

“Combativeness rarely stems from malice,” Dr. Lin tells Parade. “It arises from a nervous system that has detected and decided it is under threat.”

Because of this, a person who is aggressive like this often just needs to feel validated and understood. Read on for the best way to instantly stop an antagonist’s behavior, along with an explanation as to why some people are more contentious than others in arguments.

Why Some People Act Combative During Conflicts

“When a person is acting combatively, they are most often under stress and feeling distress, causing their ‘fight’ response to activate via the body’s sympathetic system,” Dr. Lin explains.

“The sympathetic nervous system controls the body’s fight-or-flight responses in the face of danger. In this state, the combative person is preparing for high risk and stress,” she adds. “Their brain is unable to rationally absorb and assess information. Their mind-body system is on guard and vigilantly self-protective.”

In many cases, this manifests as combative behavior, such as “rejection, aggressive opposition or even icy shutout.”

This Phrase Can Instantly Shut Down a Combative Person, Psychologist Says

The phrase that Dr. Lin says can shut down and “effectively reset” a combative person is: “I’m listening. What else do you want to tell me?”

This phrase is effective at calming down an aggressive person “because it validates that they are being heard, indicates willingness and curiosity to engage and invites the person to share more,” she states.

Why does this phrase shut down a combative person’s behavior?

“Remember, the combative person is in a state of overwhelm and hyperarousal—flooded with feelings of fear, anger, and uncertainty. They feel and believe they have been wronged or misunderstood,” Dr. Lin further explains.

“If you are able to calmly and authentically state otherwise and invite them to say more, it will prompt their brain to pause and reassess the situation,” she continues. “This non-confrontational and inviting phrase signals that you are safe and won’t engage in a fight or attack. Quite the contrary, you are ready to listen, understand and validate. You are not questioning their feelings or views; you are simply wanting to know more. This can feel highly reassuring.”

As the combative person’s brain processes the two-part phrase, “their neurological system and body begin to equilibrate, activating the parasympathetic system,” per Dr. Lin.

This can actually physically calm a person, therefore leading to a more productive—and less combative—conversation.

3 Other Phrases That Can Shut Down Antagonistic Behavior

“Situations and relationships differ, and the more phrases you have in your toolkit, the better,” Dr. Lin notes. “You can prepare and practice how to manage and reconnect when someone behaves combatively.”

Here are three other phrases you can try using to shut down someone acting combatively.

1. “I see you’re upset. What can I do?”

Saying “I see you’re upset. What can I do?” is effective because it “provides clear emotional validation at the outset,” says Dr. Lin. This phrase is particularly productive when the confrontational person is a child or teen who is still learning how to regulate their emotions.

“When using this phrase, you are immediately stepping into care mode,” she shares. It shows that you are “genuinely empathetic and willing to move into a caring, problem-solving mode to help ease the person’s stress.”

“The goal here is to effectively and quickly help the person regulate,” she adds.

Once everyone is calmed down and emotionally regulated, you can return to discussing the original conflict in a more mature way.

2. “I hear your points and see where you’re coming from. Can we talk about it?”

“This phrase provides strong emotional and viewpoint validation upfront,” Dr. Lin states. “It works very well when you genuinely see the other person’s point of view, empathize with them and agree—at least to some extent.”

Then, the second part of the phrase is designed to “facilitate a two-way conversation, rather than letting the combative person’s behaviors take up all the space.”

“The goal here is to reset and facilitate a productive conversation,” she adds. “For this to develop successfully, it is important to maintain curiosity, an empathic stance and active, reciprocal listening.”

3. “Let’s take a few breaths together”

Saying “Let’s take a few breaths together” is particularly impactful when it’s someone you have a close relationship with, such as a friend or family member.

“Compared to the other phrases, this one emphasizes the collectiveness of the two parties, inviting both to pause together, breathe and co-regulate,” shares Dr. Lin. “It can be highly effective when the relationship carries a foundational level of trust and psychological safety, yet the person is behaving combatively in the moment.”

If you aren’t very close with the combative person in question, you can try saying, “Let’s take a beat together” instead. She says this phrase is a bit less intimate than “Let’s take a few breaths together,” but both phrases have the same goal: “to pause, reset and lower the emotional temperature, then mutually decide on next steps.”

Classic rock history is full of remarkable “what ifs,” but few carry the emotional weight of Bruce Springsteen‘s song for Elvis Presley that another group made a smash.

Written during the spring of 1977, “Fire” was meant to be the ultimate collaboration between two generations of rock icons. When tragic timing prevented the track from ever reaching the King, the song took an unexpected detour into music history.

According to Elvis.com.au, Springsteen was a huge fan of the King of Rock and Roll. He followed his career intently and in 1977 he attended a Presley concert along with E Street bandmate Steve Van Zandt.

Far Out quoted Springsteen as saying that he was somewhat disappointed in the King’s performance. He said, “It was not a good night.”

Legend has it that afterward, the New Jersey rocker wrote “Fire” for Presley. Ultimately, the song didn’t reach him before his death in August 1977, so the song next went to rockabilly singer Robert Gordon one year later, appearing on the LP Fresh Fish Special.

Later in 1978, legendary soul singers The Pointer Sisters were given the song at the suggestion of their producer, Richard Perry. The song became a hit, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1979.

The trio of Anita, June, and Ruth Pointer released “Fire” as the first single from their album Energy. It became their first gold single.

Springsteen wouldn’t release his own version of the song until November 1986 on the live box set Live/1975–85. It was issued as a live single in January 1987.

Springsteen’s fondness for Presley was so immense that he did the unthinkable. While on tour promoting the LP Born to Run in 1975, he jumped Graceland’s fence in an attempt to meet his idol. He relayed the story during an appearance on the Graham Norton Show.

“Jumped over the wall, ran up the drive, got to the front door, and I was just about to knock on the front door, and a security guy came out of the bushes,” Springsteen explained. “He said, ‘Can I help you?’ I said, ‘Yes, is Elvis here?’”

Ultimately, Presley was in Las Vegas. But Springsteen had a message for his idol.

“I said, ‘Well, okay, can you tell him, and I generally don’t like to do this, but that Bruce Springsteen was here. He may not know who that is, but I was just on the cover of Time and Newsweek,’” he shared. “That was the closest I ever got to Elvis Presley.”

Elvis Presley never got the chance to make “Fire” his own, but the song’s unexpected path to the top of the charts remains an incredible piece of music history. It brought two eras of musical royalty together and delivered a smash hit.
