1981 No. 1 Hit Took Just 10 Minutes to Record — But Its Meaning Was Misunderstood for Years
In 1981, Hall & Oates' classic album Private Eyes was released, and from it came a masterpiece that took over the Billboard Hot 100 chart's No. 1 top spot: "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)."
While some listeners may automatically think the track was written about a romantic relationship (and arguably, the circumstances can also apply), the hit was actually inspired by the artists' desire to go against the grain, refusing to bow to the demands of their record label.
The second single from their tenth studio album, "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" was brought to life by band members Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Sara Allen while recording their album in Jimi Hendrix's old studio, Electric Lady, after finishing up one day.
It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Jan. 30, 1982, knocking Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” out of the top spot in America after a 10-week stay at No. 1. It simultaneously topped the R&B chart, a rare distinction at the time.

“Most people think the song is about a relationship and it is—but one with the music industry. I felt very manipulated at the time, by management and the record business. Like a pawn. ‘I can’t go for that—no can do.’ That was something I said a lot,” Daryl Hall explained to The Guardianin 2018.
Its misunderstood meaning aside, the smash hit came together rather quickly—in about ten minutes, actually, according to MixMagazine.
"I yelled into the studio: 'Turn the tapes on!' Then I shouted to John: 'Play this line.' And I hummed something. John grabbed his guitar – and that was it. I basically wrote the song on the spot: it was being recorded as I was thinking of it. In the vocal booth, I sang some gibberish words and wrote some proper lyrics later. We added the alto sax later too," Hall continued to The Guardian of the song's creation.
It immediately resonated with fans and fellow artists alike. Michael Jackson admitted to lifting the baseline of the track for his own "Billie Jean," while it has also been sampled for other songs over the years, like De La Soul's 1989 "Say No Go" and Simply Red's 2003 "Sunrise," per On Stage Magazine.

In 1975, a country song with a softer, more sensual edge climbed to the top of the charts and helped redefine what mainstream country music could sound like.
"Daydreams About Night Things" by Ronnie Milsap became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs, standing out from many of the era's more traditional country tracks thanks to its intimate lyrics and polished sound.
Written by John Schweers, the song tells the story of a man spending his days fantasizing about the woman waiting for him at home. While subtle by today's standards, the track's romantic and quietly sensual tone gave it a different feel from much of country radio at the time.
"I just heard of somebody interviewing Olivia Newton-John," Schweers told The Tennessean. "When he interviewed her, his comment was, 'Boy, when we were talking, I was having daydreams about night things.' And then I thought, 'Well, man, that’s a song idea!' Later on, I got married, and my wife was working in the bank, and I was at home writing songs. So, she comes in one day. She says, 'Well, let me hear what you wrote today while I was in town working.'"
Schweers played the soon-to-be hit for his wife, and with her stamp of approval she sent it to Milsap.
"Man, I love that song," Milsap told Schweers. "I want to do it. Don't pitch it to anybody else," he added.
Rather than focusing on heartbreak or honky-tonk storytelling, "Daydreams About Night Things" leaned into longing, desire and emotional escape. Combined with Milsap's smooth vocal delivery, the result was a song that felt both deeply personal and highly accessible.
The track arrived during a major turning point for country music, as artists increasingly blended country with pop and soft rock influences to reach broader audiences. Milsap became one of the genre's defining crossover stars, and songs like this helped pave the way.
"I don't know that there's still ever been anything like that musically. Now, Ronnie does it very country. It's a rock song wrapped up as a country tune from 1975," said Bart Herbison of The Tennessean. "Because man, it's a rockin' tune that holds up to this day, in my opinion."
Its sleek production and relatable lyrics resonated strongly with listeners, sending the single to the top of the country charts and further establishing Milsap as one of the biggest voices of the decade.
Over time, the song became one of his signature hits and a standout example of the smoother "countrypolitan" sound that dominated much of the 1970s.
More than 50 years later, "Daydreams About Night Things" remains a beloved country classic, remembered for proving that tenderness and sensuality could be just as powerful as heartbreak on country radio.

Pokémon Scalpers Resell Target Displays for Thousands Online
Things are getting increasingly chaotic in the world of Pokémon collecting—and now even Target’s store displays aren’t safe.
After Target launched a huge Pokémon-themed promotion on Saturday, May 2, collectors rushed to stores for exclusive merchandise for the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebration. The drop included everything from apparel and toys to accessories and Pop-Tarts (more on that later), with many locations selling out almost immediately.
But according to online listings and social media, some resellers didn’t stop at the actual products. Promotional cardboard displays featuring characters like Pikachu, Charizard, and Eevee have reportedly started popping up on resale sites like eBay for hundreds of dollars—with some listed in the thousands.

“Every scrap and bit of it is now going for double or TRIPLE online. 😑 I hate it,” one wrote on the Target Subreddit.
“The level of 'down bad' you have to be to steal the actual display is honestly impressive and pathetic,” said another.

One employee shared, “Our [aisle] looks the same but we still have the back paper but almost the whole [aisle] is wiped out. Guests [have] been asking if we [have] anymore elsewhere and the answer is were all out.”
And the displays aren’t the only unusual items being flipped. Limited-edition Pokémon-themed Pop-Tarts—vanilla cupcake-flavored which were originally priced at $2.89—have reportedly been listed online for as much as $34.99. It's unclear if the scalpers were successful is actually selling them at that price, however.
Fans online were baffled by the resale craze, especially since the boxes don’t appear to include exclusive collectibles or inserts.
"This is pathetic..... they aren't even themed like the originals.....literally just have Pikachu on the box," said an Instagram user.
Another commented, "Y'all some weirdos. Just because it has pokemon on it doesn't mean it's worth buying."
Despite the frustration, the frenzy may not be slowing down anytime soon. A second Pokémon drop at Target is already scheduled for June 6 and will feature additional merchandise tied to the anniversary collab.

What Age Range Makes Up Gen Z?First, let’s be clear on who we’re talking about. Gen Z isn’t the youngest generation, but it’s one of them. Born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Zers are approximately 13 to 28 years old.

“They didn’t adapt to the Internet; they grew up inside it,” she tells Parade. That shapes how they communicate, even in the workplace.
So, if you’re communicating with a Gen Z coworker and want the best results, consider these tips from Dreizen:
“Be concise, be transparent and be authentic—they are sensitive to performative anything: diversity, inclusivity, etc.,” she shares. “Additionally, they are collaborative and believe respect is something you earn, not... owed.”
Gen Zers are also less likely to recognize hierarchy in tech systems or workplaces, she continues, so the phrase “that’s not what we do there” isn’t necessarily in their vocabulary.

7 Phrases To Avoid When Emailing Gen Z Coworkers, Etiquette Expert SharesFor more phrases that don’t fly with Gen Z coworkers, read on.
1. “This is just how it’s done”This phrase is a variation of the aforementioned “That’s not what we do here.” With someone who’s Gen Z, Dreizen recommends including an explanation, sharing that it will go further with your coworker than essentially saying “just because.”
“Institutional knowledge is great, but sometimes it needs to be considered,” she adds.
2. “You’ll understand when you have more experience”While perhaps true in some regards, this phrase is offensive and unhelpful, and it disqualifies the helpful perspectives of the younger generation.
“Assuming Gen Z can’t understand because they're younger or newer negates the experience they bring in and their fresh perspective,” Dreizen says. “It’s worth hearing them out, and explaining, if for some reason, that doesn’t work.”
3. “We don’t really use that here”This is another example of a broad statement with no explanation.
“If you don’t use technology or [a certain] platform, explain why,” Dreizen recommends. “If you don’t have a reason, consider that they might have a good idea.”
4. “I need you to be more professional”While this can be a valid request in some scenarios, the phrasing has problems.
“The term ‘professional’ is vague and can be used to hold onto negative generational patterns,” Dreizen states. “Be more specific and consider why you want them to change their behavior—is it really unprofessional, or is it just unconventional?”
5. “Can you just give me a quick call?”Gen Zers, like Millennials, aren’t big on phone calls. “And they're not wrong—the phone and calls, and meetings, can be a time drain,” Dreizen says.
She recommends asking your questions in an email if possible, giving you and your coworker time to respond thoughtfully.
6. “You’re not here to change things”A phrase like this will “shut down a Gen Zer quickly,” according to Dreizen.
“Try suggesting they see how things work before suggesting changes, but let them know their voice is important and necessary,” she adds.
7. “I sent this to your email—did you see it?”This question can be a form of micromanaging, something Gen Z does not respond well to.
“If you hire someone, trust they are able to do the job, give them time to do their job and allow them to work on the flow that works for them,” Dreizen says. “If there is an ongoing issue, address that.”

3 Alternative Phrases To Use in Emails With Gen ZWhile the above phrases are best avoided, the following phrases are smart additions.
1. “Here’s why this matters”This quick and easy phrase leads to extra information, something Gen Zers are here for.
“That’s a fair ask,” Dreizen adds. “Connect tasks to a larger purpose and let them know they are not just doing busy work.”
2. “I don’t have a perfect answer yet, but here’s where we are”This phrase exudes honesty and authenticity.
“[Gen Z] appreciates knowing where things stand, and if the answer isn’t 100 percent, they’d like to be part of the solution,” Dreizen explains. Let them help.

3. “Here’s the deadline, and here’s what ‘done’ actually looks like”Clarity is appreciated by Gen Zers, and it’s a generally useful value in the workplace.
“Clear parameters remove ambiguity, which is particularly useful for a generation still calibrating professional experiences,” Dreizen shares. “It also signals that you’ve thought through the ask before making it, which they notice and respect.”
Final TakeawaysTalking to Gen Z coworkers when you’re not Gen Z (aka, between the ages of 13 and 28 years old) can be tricky—no cap. Your best bet is to understand and respect their needs, such as transparency, authenticity and collaboration.
Avoid quickly saying, “We don’t really use that here,” or “You’ll understand when you have more experience.” Remember: While they may not have as many years in the field as you do, they do have valuable input, and being clear in a kind way will go further than you think.

Emily FlippenWhen Emily Flippen made her return to Survivor, she provided a surprising takeaway from her star-making first season: She was too "soft." Feeling like her lack of agency led to her blindside, this time she went in with gusto, immediately floating out Ozzy Lusth's name from the very first vote. While this gameplay felt more in Emily's wheelhouse, it also made her competition feel she was, for lack of a better term, messy. Nowhere is that more prevalent than her first day on her new swap tribe, where she spent an afternoon telling Angelina Keeley she was on the bottom, and informing everyone that Aubry Bracco had an idol.
When the merge hit, while Emily cleaned up her loose lips, her ship was still sinking. Christian Hubicki's blindside left her in the dark the first time in her Survivor career, on the bottom alongside Rick Devens. And when the tribe was split, with Rick in possession of a new idol, she seemed like an easy target. But, going back to the initiative that brought her back in the first place, Emily worked her tail off that afternoon, concocting a plan to convince everyone she could get Rick to play his idol on her so they would dump votes onto him. It was a valiant effort, but ultimately a losing one. And while Emily was fated to go out on Day 21 once more, unlike her last time, she left with the confidence that she gave it everything she could.

Ozzy LusthDespite having played for four seasons, over 100 days, and nearly winning the game twice, Ozzy Lusth came into Survivor 50 with a completely different game. This time, he was "Oscar" (a moniker, as it turns out, in honor of his late father), someone who sought to reel in people rather than fish. His first step in that: Breaking bread with his old nemesis, Cirie Fields. Indeed, the two former Favorites became the tightest duo in the game, running things from behind the scenes. And Ozzy had even more backup in the form of advantages. By Day 4, he already had an Extra Vote and an idol, truly on the path to finally taking home the win his fifth time out.
Granted, it wasn't a smooth swim through the game for Ozzy. And, in some opportune moments when he was either left out of the vote or got votes against him, he had an incredibly emotional reaction, calling back to the post-blindside meltdowns he would have before. But wanting to prove he's truly changed, he always soldiered forward, not letting his feelings break his stride.
Despite how up-and-down the Survivor 50 postmerge has been, there has been one constant: Ozzy as a target. Between his challenge prowess (almost tying Boston Rob Mariano's all-time win record) and the fact he had a public idol, time and time again, his name was being floated out, only for Cirie to help whip the votes to keep him. It's only fitting, then, that the second he was separated from her down the beach was the second his game would implode. Assuming Aubry was a dead woman walking, Ozzy proceeded to out his entire game to her, in the hopes of gaining her favor on the jury. But Aubry quickly weaponized that information, giving everyone else the initiative to turn the tables on him. Ozzy spoke that night at Tribal Council about finding the "joy" in playing Survivor. But that joy quickly turned to anger and devastation as he was absolutely eviscerated, blindsided unanimously. Despite working so hard to change himself, Ozzy wound up succumbing to the exact same fate: Getting voted out with an idol in his pocket.
Yes! Jonathan Young was the recipient of the first-ever "Power Broker Advantage," which we'll get into below. And Rick played the idol he received from MrBeast the previous episode, nullifying two votes against him. Sadly, Ozzy got voted out without playing his idol, leaving Rizo Velovic with the only idol left in the game.

A new twist — and a challenge first!Before this week's challenge, Jeff Probst promised a twist would be coming. He didn't realize, however, that it would happen in the challenge itself! Initially, the host determined that Tiffany Ervin had won the battle of endurance, outlasting the others in a test of balance on the water. But the Emmy winner was then literally carted away to consult with some producers, who had noticed Tiffany had not picked up her foot in time for the last portion of the challenge, giving her an unfair advantage as others plummeted into the ocean. She was subsequently disqualified, and the second-place finisher, Jonathan, was actually given immunity.
But that wasn't all! Besides the immunity necklace, Jonathan held lots of power at tonight's vote. The other eight players were divided into two groups of four, each tasked with voting someone out that night. Jonathan earned the right to both attend and vote at both Tribal Councils, essentially turning them into five-person votes. Not only that, but while everyone else was separated on two separate sides of the beach, he was the only person allowed to talk with both groups. It was an advantage Probst later coined the "Power Broker Advantage," giving him the most information on how the night was going to go down.

1979 Career-Defining Classic Was Turned Down by Another Band Before It Shot Up the Charts
Just because a musician has a chart-topping song or two doesn't mean they always know a hit when they hear one...just ask Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band.
"Don't Do Me Like That," the lead single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' multi-platinum smash record Damn the Torpedoes, was Petty's first song to break the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it landed peaked at #10 on November 17, 1979.
But as Wolf explained to Rolling Stone, his longtime friend Petty originally wrote the song with the J. Geils Band in mind.
"As the years went by, I would see Tom," Wolf explained to the outlet after Petty's death in 2017. "There was one point where I was going to do some songs with [Heartbreakers guitarist] Mike Campbell. I’d stay in touch with Tom periodically...One day I got this call from [producer] Jimmy Iovine’s office, confirming my address. I got this package and in it was a cassette. It was in Tom’s handwriting: 'Don’t Do Me Like That.' And there was a note: 'Hey, I think this would be a cool song for you. I think you and the [Geils] band can really do something with it.'"
Wolf ended up passing on the song, but in retrospect, he didn't seem sure why he made that decision.

"It was in the midst of stuff," he recalled. "Maybe we thought we had the songs for our album: 'We can do it for the next one.' I called up Jimmy and, I think, Tom and said, 'Love the song. I’m not sure we’re gonna get to it. But I do like the song.' Tom wasn’t sure of it for himself for some reason. It was almost like, 'As soon as I finished writing it, I thought of sending it to you.'"
To Wolf, the song had a "Lennon-esque quality, especially in the bridge — just the way Tom puts the edge on his voice."
"There is also a Dylan-esque quality," Wolf added, referring to the lyrics. "But the way Tom recorded it, it just became so Tom. I always felt, 'Man, I wish we’d jumped on it sooner.'"
Wolf went on to reveal that "Don't Do Me Like That" came up in his last conversation with Petty.
"Tom and I were together in his dressing room," he said. "I said, 'Tom, I gotta tell you, ‘Don’t Do Me Like That’...' And he goes, 'Oh, yeah! Whatever happened?' I explained the whole thing — we were in the mix process or something. And he said, 'I gotta thank you for that. When you didn’t end up doing it, everybody talked me into putting it on the record. And it became one of my big, big hits.'"
Indeed, all these years later, it's hard to imagine anyone other than Petty singing the classic track.

Donald Trump Takes Aim at CNN in Tribute to Ted Turner After Founder's Death at 87
President Donald Trump just shared a tribute to CNN founder Ted Turner in the wake of his death and slammed the network in the process.
On Wednesday, May 6, Turner died at 87 while surrounded by his family. A cause of death was not shared, as of writing, although he battled Lewy body dementia.
Trump, 79, took to Truth Social on Wednesday with a tribute to Turner.
"Ted Turner, one of the Greats of All Time, just died," the POTUS began his update. "He founded CNN, sold it, and was personally devastated by the Deal because the new ownership took CNN, his 'baby,' and destroyed it."
Additionally, the president said that CNN "became woke, and everything that he is not all about."
He continued, "Maybe the new buyers, wonderful people, will be able to bring it back to its former credibility and glory. Regardless, however, one of the Greats of Broadcast History, and a friend of mine. Whenever I needed him, he was there, always willing to fight for a good cause!"

In a statement, CNN CEO Mark Thompsoncalled Turner an "intensely involved and committed leader," describing him as "intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement."
Thompson added, "He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN. Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world."
Meanwhile, CNN's Wolf Blitzer called Turner “a legend," noting "he revolutionized the television business by creating the first 24-hour news channel right here at CNN."
Turner is survived by five children, Laura, Teddy, Beau, Rhett, and Jennie. During his lifetime, he was married three times, to Julia Gale Nye, Jane Shirley Smith, and Jane Fonda.

Mother’s Day is this weekend, and the White House is celebrating early. President Donald Trump and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, recently hosted the annual Military Mother’s Day event in the East Room to honor, as the name implies, the mothers of military Service Members.

1971 Heartbreaking Rock Ballad About Forbidden Love Became a Timeless Anthem
The love triangle of George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd just might be the most famous in all of rock and roll history...not least because it resulted in some of the biggest hits of all time.
By now, pretty much everybody knows the story: Clapton fell in love with Boyd when she was still married to his good friend, Harrison. Eventually, Boyd split with Harrison and married Clapton (the couple would later divorce, too), but before all that happened, Clapton channeled his feelings into the only album he would ever make with Derek & the Dominos: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970).
"We were a make-believe band," Clapton later said in an interview with music journalist Anthony DeCurtis.
"We were all hiding inside it," Clapton continued. "Derek and the Dominos — the whole thing. So it couldn't last. I had to come out and admit that I was being me. I mean, being Derek was a cover for the fact that I was trying to steal someone else's wife. That was one of the reasons for doing it, so that I could write the song, and even use another name for Pattie. So Derek and Layla — it wasn't real at all."
"Layla" wasn't the only Derek and the Dominos song to be directly inspired by Boyd. As Clapton explained in his autobiography, he wrote "Bell Bottom Blues" for his pal's then-spouse after she asked him to bring back some bell bottom jeans for her from the U.S. (which he did).
The lyrics aren't about jeans, but they are about having the blues:
"I don't want to fade away

I don't want to fade away
In your heart, I want to stay
It's all wrong, but it's alright
The way that you treat me, baby, ooh
Once I was strong, but I lost the fight
You won't find a better loser"
All these years later after it was released as a single in January of 1971, the song is still considered to be one of Clapton's best of all time.
"Rarely has Clapton reached the heights on his recordings that he hit with his guitar playing, songwriting, and most impressively, his heart-wrenching vocal performance on the song," wrote Bill Janovitz of All Music.
George Harrison 'didn't have any problem' with Pattie Boyd and Eric Clapton's relationshipAs Harrison explained in a 1977 interview with Crawdaddy Magazine, he gave Clapton and Boyd his blessing.
"The thing is, with Eric over the years, and you know we [Harrison and Boyd] both loved Eric. Still do," the former Beatle explained.
:And there were a few funny things," Harrison continued. "I pulled his chick once. That's happened, and now you'd think he was trying to get his own back on me. But much later, when all that thing was going on, when I split from Patti, you know...Patti and he got together after we'd really split. And actually we'd been splitting up for years. That was the funny thing, you know. I thought that was the best thing to do, for us to split, and we should've just done it much sooner. But I didn't have any problem about it — Eric had the problem. Every time I'd go and see him, and stuff, he'd be really hung up about it, and I was saying, 'F—k it, man. Don't be apologizing,' and he didn't believe me. I was saying, 'I don't care.'"

Rolling Stone recently came out with their 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time list. The list is filled with a star studded group of solos that is surely worth a read, with Prince's "Purple Rain" taking the top spot.
What people think is the "greatest guitar solo ever" has been a long and storied debate throughout rock music. Any fan will have a different opinion that they will passionately defend until the end. I, myself, will always advocate for David Gilmour's solo on "Comfortably Numb." Incredible stuff.

In conjunction with the release of the list, Rolling Stone put out a compilation of some of rock music's legends weighing in on what they think the best solo of all time.
An impressive group of rock's greatest showed up to share their thoughts. Let's go through some of the notable picks now.
Melissa Etheridge's choice was the iconic solo from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," which recently featured as the goal horn song for Team USA Hockey at the Olympics. The blazing fast solo is one of the most iconic of all time, and is a consistent standout amongst fans.
Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine chose "Mr. Crowley" by the late, great Ozzy Osbourne. This is another consistent favorite for many, with the tragically gone-too-soon Randy Rhodes delivering one of the most powerful solos in all of rock music.
Robert Fripp of King Crimson came out of left field with his choice of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz. Fripp praised the song's "slithery and slidy" feeling.

1969 No. 1 Mellow Rock Classic Is Making a Huge Comeback 57 Years Later
Some hit songs are popular for just a little while, but other classics have the sort of timeless sound and message that keep them relevant for generations. Such is the case with the Thunderclap Newman's late '60s classic, "Something in the Air," which is making a much-deserved comeback thanks to a new Netflix series.
The mellow one-hit wonder, which went to #1 in the U.K. during the summer of 1969, was originally titled "Revolution." The band ended up renaming the track to avoid any confusion with the Beatles song of the same name, which came out the year before, but the lyrics still reflect the revolutionary spirit of the era:
"Call out the instigators / Because there's something in the air / We got to get together sooner or later / Because the revolution's here / And you know it's right / And you know that it's right / We have got to get it together / We have got to get it together now"
The mellow, melodic tune's optimistic tone makes it the perfect theme song for "This Is a Gardening Show," the new Netflix documentary series hosted by Zach Galifianakis which features the actor interviewing farmers and kids about how to grow your own fruits and vegetables.
“I think we have to be honest with ourselves and say there might be a huge storm coming...climate-wise," Galifianakis told CBC News. "And I think kids, the more they know, the more they'll be able to adapt.”
In other words, like the song says, "We have got to get it together now."
Pete Townshend secretly played on 'Something in the Air'Named after the group's piano player, Andy "Thunderclap" Newman, Thunderclap Newman was assembled by Pete Townshend of The Who in an attempt to utilize the talents of drummer/singer Speedy Keen, who had written “Armenia City in the Sky” for The Who Sell Out album, according to American Songwriter. On guitar was Jimmy McCulloch (who was just 15 when the band recorded "Something in the Air"), while Townshend himself played under bass under the pseudonym Bijou Drains.
Unfortunately, Thunderclap Newman didn't last very long as a band; in fact, they broke up after their first album. McCulloch went on to join Wings with Paul McCartney, but died tragically young at the age of 26 in 1979.
All these years later, however, "Something in the Air" is still finding new fans...and calling for a revolution.
