9 Books Releasing This Week for Those Who Need Romance, Wackiness, and So Much More!
Whether you’re looking for romance, horror, or something in between, the multitude of book releases each week makes sure there is something for everyone. May 5, 2026, is no different, whether you’re looking for a memoir from a literary great or you’re in the mood for something darker and twistier.
It can be hard working through the full list of releases and finding something exciting. Here are nine that stand out across the genres, both from authors you know and authors you may not just yet!
Grand Central
‘True Crime: A Memoir’ by Patricia CornwellWhen it comes to literary icons, Patricia Cornwell will stand out for many people. Her Scarpetta books have been in households for the last three decades, and she is not slowing down! The TV series on Prime Video was just released — and more than worth waiting for — and she recently sat down with us at Parade to talk about that and the memoir we never thought she’d write.
Cornwell gets into the darker moments of her past, leaving us with our jaws on the floor. It’s a chance to see how she has pushed through life, regardless of what it threw at her, and she makes it clear that she didn’t do it alone. If you’re used to memoirs that tend to be on the drier side, True Crime will show you how it’s meant to be done. Sometimes, you’ll forget that it’s non-fiction with the way the prose flows.
Berkley
‘Our Perfect Storm’ by Carley FortuneAfter Cornwell’s memoir, you will definitely need something lighter and more romantic. Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune is the next must-read of the week. The Canadian romance author has succeeded again, bringing us a love story that feels like it could be real, while also bringing in elements of recent Canadian history to set the stage and tone.
As I said in my review for this one, you will need tissues because there is a moment that will make you sad. It’s not to do with the main couple, but it still made me need to put the book down for a second and recoup. However, this moment is so important for Frankie’s journey, and it makes it essential reading.
MacMillan Publishers
‘Enormous Wings’ by Laurel FrankelHow about something a little more wacky? What could get wackier than a 77-year-old pregnant woman? Yes, that’s what you’ll get with Enormous Wings by Laurel Frankel, and it’s a lot of fun to read and figure out. Within the fun are some important topics to think about, including bodily autonomy and female agency.
It all starts with a minister cutting up her driving license, making her realize that her life has to change. And so, she sells everything she has and accepts that she can no longer drive. The only option for her is to move into a retirement home, and that’s where things take a strange turn. Now she’s pregnant, and everyone wants a piece of her, making it very difficult to live the remaining years the way she wants.
Courtesy of Disney Hyperion ‘Body Count’ by Codie CrowleyFor those who love YA horror, Body Count by Codie Crowley is likely already on your list. I will say this is slightly steamier than a traditional YA, but it’s a lot of fun and brings up some excellent topics of greed and debts. Of course, there’s a hint of romance mixed in with the supernatural horror.
This is one of the novels of the week that I would love to see turned into a movie. There’s an underwater djinn of sorts, but each wish comes at a price. As Sundae realizes that there are prices she’s unwilling to pay, she decides not to make that third wish, but the monster isn’t exactly willing to let her not uphold her end of the deal she didn’t know she made!
Random House BFYR
‘That Which Feeds Us’by Keala KendallAnother horror is That Which Feeds Us by Keala Kendall, and this one is going to make you think more of the world. That Which Feeds Us is a Hawaiian gothic horror, following Lehua, a Hawaiian native who traces her twin sister’s disappearance to Kōpaʻa Island Resort, the wealthiest resort on the island.
While she’s there, she learns much more than she bargained for when it comes to her state’s dark and twisted history. Kendall has done her research into her own home, bringing up important topics that aren’t going to sit easily with many. And that’s the point! This is a story of reclamation and truth, and we need to stop reading the history written by the victors.
Keeperton | Arndell Books
‘The Heart You Kept’ by T.L. SwanWe’re heading back to the romance, and this time it’s from BookTok’s icon, T.L. Swan. After the success of the Miles High Club, she’s here with The Heart You Kept, the first in a new series of romances. Yes, there is still the same steamy romance packed into this novel, but there are some very different characters.
Alora Sorenson thought she’d moved on from the man she spent a secret weekend with in the Swiss Alps, but life has a way of throwing curveballs. That’s what it does when billionaire casino owner Edward Prescott walks back into her life. This time, she may not be able to get him out of her head.

‘The Library of Flowers’ by L.C. ChuIf you need a story about family and legacy, then The Library of Flowers by L.C. Chu is the next one that’s more than worth checking out. It also touches on belonging and identity, two things that a lot of people, especially women, struggle with. There’s a magical element to the story, as it follows the Hua women, who have used magical perfumes to help stir the hearts of emperors, billionaires, and others who wield power.
In the fifth generation, an eldest daughter is born wit the ability to summon true love. That is the power that Lucy is supposed to have gained, but when her magic fails, she decides to flee from Vancouver to Toronto, where she can live her life the way she chooses, running a tiny perfume shop. When a family death brings her back home, she has to face the loss, the unwelcome feelings, and forgotten truths.
Penguin Random House
‘Young World’ by Soman ChainaniIf you loved The School of Good and Evil, then you’ll want to check out Soman Chainani’s YA debut, Young World. This is an immersive story, inspired by many of the realities Gen Z is facing, whether it’s the frustration of constant crises or the disillusionment with politics. It’s a must as a physical copy due to the in-world visuals packed throughout.
This geopolitical thriller follows an average teen, who ends up igniting an uprising around the world due to one action: a video urging people to write him in as president. Of course, viral videos are those least planned, and suddenly, this teen finds himself in the Oval Office and having to figure out how to fix the problems everyone around the world wants him to.
Penguin Random House
‘The Library After Dark’ by Ande PliegoWhen you want mystery, fantasy, and dark fairytales, you need to turn to The Library After Dark by Ande Pliego. It’s a blend of Agatha Christie and Stephen King, but with a bit of the Grimm Brothers thrown in there. Everyone needs to find a way to survive the night, but it’s hard to trust anyone else when every single person is a suspect.
Throw in hidden passageways, and you get another Clue-like thriller — similar to Pliego’s You Are Fatally Invited — with puzzles to solve with the characters. This is much more than a story to keep you entertained, though. It’s a love letter to the stories that have come before, creating a literary world we can escape to.
Jon Cryer Reveals 'Complicated Relationship' with Charlie Sheen Years After Public Feud: 'I Had a Lot of Mixed Feelings'
Less than a year after participating in 2025's Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer is breaking his silence on his long-standing relationship with his former Two and a Half Men co-star.
Appearing on the May 1 episode of The View, the 61-year-old Cryer discussed his participation in the documentary in spite of his distant relationship with Sheen: something brought on by Sheen's highly publicized dismissal from Two and a Half Men and his subsequent public attacks against Cryer.
“It was interesting,” Cryer said. “I had a lot of mixed feelings about being a part of it because obviously he’s a very complicated guy and we had a complicated relationship.”
“Mostly I realized that I wasn’t mad at him anymore; I was still kind of mad at America,” the actor continued. “Because when he went off the rails and went crazy, a lot of people seemed to enjoy that.”
As Cryer mentioned, Sheen's personal life famously spilled over onto the set of Two and a Half Men, leading to accusations of substance abuse and unpredictable behavior that hampered the show's production.
After cutting season eight of the show short, Sheen made several disparaging remarks about series showrunner Chuck Lorre, eventually leading to his dismissal from the show. Following this, Sheen continued making offensive comments about Lorre, Cryer and his eventual replacement on Two and a Half Men,Ashton Kutcher.
“I knew him as a friend, as a coworker, and so it was really painful to see all that and see that craziness and see a lot of people enjoying it,” Cryer said. “So that’s part of why I kind of wanted to, obviously, say my side of the story.”
As for whether he's willing to bury the hatchet with Sheen, Cryer said he would be willing to sit down with his former co-star and let bygones be bygones.
“Yeah, I would,” the Pretty in Pinkactor said. “I mean, it’s funny because every now and then an article comes out that we’re arguing and it’s just not the case.”
1956 Hit Film Classic, Nominated for 4 Oscars, Had Its Shocking Ending Changed
In 1956, moviegoers flocked to see The Bad Seed. Based on Williams March’s novel of the same name, the psychological horror thriller starred Nancy Kelly, Henry Jones, Eileen Heckart, and child actress Patty McCormack. The movie followed the story of Rhoda Penmark (McCormack), an eight-year-old hiding a dark secret about her involvement in the murder of a classmate.
The Bad Seed was a box office hit. It was nominated for four Academy Awards, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for McCormack. Heckart and McCormack were also nominated for Golden Globe Awards for their roles, with Heckart winning Best Supporting Actress.
McCormack played the sweet-faced but evil protagonist in both the 1954 stage and 1956 film versions of The Bad Seed. But the endings to the two productions were very different.
The novel and stage version ended with Kelly’s Christine Penmark poisoning her killer daughter and taking her own life, but the film version hit a roadblock when that ending was presented.
"In the play, the mother shoots herself and dies, while Rhoda survives her mother's attempt to poison her,” McCormack, now 80, told the Abbeville Meridional in 2016, per MeTV. “So no one was left alive who knew what Rhoda really did. But they changed that for the movie because the Motion Picture Production Code of the 1950s wouldn't permit movie criminals to go unpunished."
An alternate endingAccording to Turner Classic Movies, when director Billy Wilder wanted to make The Bad Seed independently, he was stopped by the Production Code Administration's (Hays Code) censorship rule, which banned movies “dealing with criminal activities, in which minors participate, or to which minors are related."
Warner Bros. director Mervyn LeRoy worked around the problem with an alternate ending—SPOILER ALERT— that showed little Rhoda being karmically punished for her crimes by being struck by a bolt of lightning. LeRoy also incorporated a cheeky curtain call at the film's end. After the cast was introduced and took bows, Kelly put McCormack over her knee and spanked her.

McCormack tried to separate herself from the characterFor decades, McCormack tried to distance herself from her pigtailed Bad Seed character.
Speaking on the It Happened in Hollywood podcast in September 2025, the actress admitted, “Back then, there was that awful, awful thing of being a one-hit wonder. … So I did my best to separate myself from that role and reputation.”
Over time, she grew to appreciate her performance—and her evil character. “[Broadway] director [Reginald Denham] was the one who really guided my performance,” she recalled. “He told me that no matter what, I was always right. If you think about that when you watch it next time, you can see I have no patience for any of the adults’ opinions when they don’t coincide with my own. I didn’t focus on the gore. I focused on being selfish and kind of chilly.”
“My character went against the grain of what was expected,” The Bad Seed star added. “She’s a rebel in sheep’s clothing, because she dresses really nice and pretty. … Rhoda had a lot of stuff for a seemingly delicate little girl.”

1998 Smash Hit From Faith Hill Made ACM Awards History 27 Years Ago Today
On this day 27 years ago, Faith Hill celebrated a historic night at the 34th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, with the country singer dominating at the award show and taking home four awards.
The career milestone was made possible thanks to the success of Hill's third studio album, Faith, and in particular, her chart-topping single, "This Kiss." The song was first released in February 1998, but it was still flying high the next year at the ACM Awards. Throughout its initial run, "This Kiss" topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, while it also peaked at the seventh position on the Hot 100 chart, an impressive performance for any artist.
Ahead of the awards show, Hill had the most nominations, with six, while her husband, fellow country star Tim McGraw, was also nominated for a few awards, including one with Hill. The couple didn't have a guarantee that they would win any of the awards that night, but on May 5, 1999, they both ended the night as major winners.

Hill made history as she took home four different awards that night, the most of any artist there. This included Single Record of the Year for "This Kiss," Top Female Vocalist of the Year, and Video of the Year. The last award she won was Top Vocal Event of the Year for her song "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me" featuring McGraw.
As for McGraw, he also won one of the biggest awards of the night for Top Male Vocalist of the Year.
While Hill won for "This Kiss," she didn't perform the song at the ACM Awards. Instead, she sang another one of her No. 1 hits from her Faith album, "Let Me Let Go." McGraw also took to the stage that night with his song "Please Remember Me."

Nancy Guthrie Update: Sheriff Continues Patrols in Annie Guthrie, Tommaso Cioni's Neighborhood
Nancy Guthrie has been missing for 94 days. Investigators say that the 84-year-old was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night.
On Monday, May 4, KVOA reported that the Pima County Sheriff's Department is still patrolling Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni's neighborhood, in addition to Nancy's neighborhood, after complaints about a YouTuber causing issues.
In mid-April, KVOA confirmed that the sheriff's department had returned to the neighborhoods to ensure the public's safety. In mid-February, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos cleared the family in the case, saying they are victims in a statement posted on X.
In the May 4 report, KVOA confirmed that more than 300 tips were sent in to 88-CRIME over the past month. The news comes days after Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos urged the public to continue sending in tips.
"The reward money is still there—it’s there for a reason. We think somebody out there knows something. We know they do. We know someone out there knows what happened. Call us,” Nanos told KVOA in an interview that was published on May 1.
Despite receiving a significant amount of tips in recent weeks, neither the sheriff's department nor the FBI have been able to identify a suspect. The investigation remains active as DNA evidence continues to be analyzed.

The resort's medical director, Dr. Marcus Coplin, has designed science-backed geothermal therapies that turn a simple soak into a restorative experience—the perfect antidote to a long day of travel or sightseeing. For those who want to be near the city's 53 parks and 16 trails, options like the Holiday Inn Express & Suites or Courtyard by Marriott offer easy access to both the downtown shops and the trailheads.
Where to Eat: Viral Brisket and Globally-Inspired BitesVisit Murrieta
The dining scene in Murrieta is currently having a major moment. Destination Smokehouse has become a viral sensation for its "fall-off-the-bone" brisket, while Sharon’s Creole Kitchen brings authentic Southern comfort to the valley.
For something more innovative, Estrada recommends DownTown PUBlic, a gastropub with a "modern industrial aesthetic," or Ticca Tikka Indian Cuisine, which Ellis praises for its "huge flavor bank of spices." For a fresh Sunday morning, head to the Murrieta Certified Farmers Market at Village Walk Plaza to snag gourmet local foods and handcrafted items before the afternoon heat sets in.

The 4 Birth Dates Destined to Be Rich
Insurmountable wealth will find people born on four birth dates, regardless of where they came from or what they were born into. Numerologists believe the energy of these birth dates align with financial success, so people born on these birth dates can trust that they’re destined to be rich. Although each birth date has its own unique frequency and vibration, they all still align with the numerological properties of either 4 or 8. Both numbers speak of building lasting security and stability, even if they use different methods to achieve the same end. However, people born on these four dates go about making money differently. Their individual talents, strengths, and overall confidence assure them that they’re destined to be rich.
What are the four birth dates most likely to be destined to be rich, and how do they achieve financial destiny? Read on to learn what the four birth dates are and the unique skills they use to become rich.
Are You Destined to be Rich, Based on Your Birth Date?Check if your date of birth is listed. Disregard birth months.
Born on the 4th - Slowly but SurelyHaving your birthday fall on the 4th means you align with the numerological energy of 4. Numerology says 4 represents a tenacious, determined spirit, making you a hard worker. As a practical individual, you’re keenly aware of what you desire and the effort your dream life commands from you. You know that wealth, success, and more won’t fall into your lap. Most would be deterred from this hard work, but not you. The good life is your destiny, and you will do everything it takes to get there. Your dedication to being rich will have you working long hours, odd jobs, and saving every penny. It won’t be easy, but the steady change in your livelihood and bank account will keep you going.
Born on the 8th - Destined for AbundanceIf your birthday is on the 8th, then you embody the numerological energy of 8. The undiluted power of 8 speaks to wealth, power, and success. You should count yourself lucky, because embodying 8’s energy means embodying richness itself. However, this doesn’t mean you’ll easily maintain and sustain your abundance. The numerological associations of your birth date also speak to reciprocity and generosity. Wealth is fated to unfold in your life, but only after you embrace your karmic duties to be financially responsible and considerate. Taking care of others, remembering those who have helped you, and sharing your wealth will strengthen your power. Remember that using your riches for good will guarantee lifelong financial success.
RELATE?: Your Celtic Goddess, Based on Birth Month
Born on the 17th - Spiritually & Intuitively GuidedBeing born on the 17th means working with three distinct numerological energies: 1, 7, and 8. Your wealth aligns with the independence of 1, the wisdom of 7, and the power of 8. When these three numerological energies come together, they create an unstoppable financial force within you. The only caveat is that you’re doing it alone. Some would be overwhelmed at the task of creating a rich legacy, but not you. You’re ready to move forward, since you thrive working independently. Working alone has bestowed divine financial literacy and trust in your spirit team. Your inner voice is loud, clear, and discerning. Between your inner voice and Spirit, you know your financial destiny is within reach.

Born on the 26th - Richer TogetherCount yourself lucky if you’re born on the 26th, because you align with the numerological properties of 2, 6, and 8. Unlike the previous birth dates, yours speaks to creating wealth with the help of others. Numerology says 2 and 6 are relationship-oriented numbers. 2 prioritizes intuitive one-on-one connections while 6 creates a like-minded community. These two energies come together to reinforce that your wealth comes from teamwork. Sharing a vision, goal, or dream with a close confidant will go a long way. You might have to learn karmic lessons regarding sharing, control, and power per 8’s influence. But these lessons will only strengthen your profound financial partnerships and agreements that will help you achieve your destiny.

Best-Selling Author Carley Fortune Talks 'Our Perfect Storm' and Reveals Her 2 Favorite Romance Tropes (Exclusive)
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
The weather is warming up, which means we're officially due for an all new Carley Fortune romance! The bestselling author of Every Summer After, Meet Me at the Lake, This Summer Will Be Different and One Golden Summer is back with her new release (out today): Our Perfect Storm.
And it not only introduces us to two new beloved characters, Frankie and George, it also features an epic setting (one of the things Fortune's writers have come to recognize and appreciate in her other novels): Tofino.
These two childhood best friends (both stubborn and headstrong) have felt themselves growing apart, but after Frankie's fiancé dumps her right before their wedding, George takes her on the honeymoon to Tofino instead. Throughout this week, in between rainforest hikes, surfboard lessons, discovering sea anemones and more, their friendship begins to repair—and maybe even transform into something else entirely.
Parade caught up with Fortune ahead of this book's release to learn more about the inspiration behind this passionate pair of characters, the Little WomenEaster eggs sprinkled throughout the story and if she thinks she'd ever write a holiday romance. Plus, Fortune reveals her favorite romance tropes and the celebrity crushes she had posters of in her childhood bedroom (relatable!).

Parade: As a huge fan of Little Women—both the book and the 1994 movie version—this was such a treat to read. Can you share a little about the backstory of what inspired this story and what made you decide to have the Little Women references throughout the book as well?
CF: It started with the setting, Tofino. I lived on Vancouver Island for a year after I graduated from university and visited Tofino twice while I lived there and it is just like nowhere else, honestly. It's so otherworldly.
When I started writing, I knew there were a couple settings that I wanted to visit in books. One of them was Prince Edward Island, which I did with This Summer Will Be Different, and the other was Tofino. And I was just waiting for the right story for the setting, because Tofino is so epic in its landscape, and the story needed to kind of feel right for that.
And then, at the same time, I had these two characters who I had been thinking about for a number of years. I'd seen, we live on a ravine in Toronto, and there's a lot of wildlife, and my boys had chased a rabbit through the backyard, and we have a cedar hedge, it went under the hedge. And I pictured these two characters, two children meeting this way, and the girl being, like, confronted with this pair of blue eyes.
And I was like, "Who are these people?" I thought about them for a long, long time and had different kind of ideas about who they could be, until they slowly became George and Frankie. And I thought, you know, these two best friends, Tofino is a honeymoon location...like, as a week in Tofino, that could work.
And then I wanted to write characters who were very similar, because I had not done that before, and I wanted to write a protagonist who was quite fiery, because in my previous book, One Golden Summer, Alice is very soft, and I always want to do something a bit different.
Then I was thinking about Frankie, and I was, like, fiery, similar, and then I was like, Jo and Laurie—that's Jo and Laurie! I always wanted Jo and Laurie to get together. When I watched that film, we had it on VHS growing up, I would sometimes turn it off when Jo refused Laurie. She is told and she believes that they are too stubborn, too hot-headed, that they would kill each other. And I thought, "Well, what if, what if it works out?" That's kind of where the dynamic came from. It's not a retelling of Little Women whatsoever, but there are, of course, references to the book, to the film. There is little Easter eggs in there. And I find that just so delightful. It's a way to kind of tribute that book, and Louisa May Alcott, in a similar way to This Summer Will Be Different, but that book pays a lot of tribute to Anne of Green Gables. Those two pieces of literature, and also their adaptations, have made a huge impact on me.

I saw in a previous interview that you did for Every Summer After, you described the characters as being a little bit blurry for you while you were writing and that the setting was a lot clearer for you. Is that the way that you felt while writing Our Perfect Storm?
It is the way I feel with every book, yes. It feels very cinematic for me, the way that I move characters around spaces and places. Sometimes, I will draw out properties—like I drew out the resort property for Our Perfect Storm—because I just really need to situate people in a physical space, but their faces are just… a blur.
Tofino is obviously such a big part of this story—readers truly feel transported to this location, which is how we felt reading other books with settings like Barry’s Bay and Prince Edward Island. Are there any other settings or specific locations that are on your list for future projects?
Oh yeah. Yes. I keep a list and people pitch me places, readers pitch me places. I also did an event last year or the year before in Uxbridge, Ontario, which is just north of Toronto, it's very, very beautiful. It's known as, like, the trail capital of Ontario ["Canada's Trail Capital"]. And the mayor came to the event and had redesigned the cover of one of my books to: Meet Me at the Trail, and he was like, "You should be setting a book in Uxbridge."
But yes, I keep lists of places that I want to visit. And I have one spot where I know what story happens there. I know, like, I'm determined, for sure. It's definitely in there.
Related: Librarians Are Calling This New Novel the ‘Best Book’ to Read Before Bed
Cannot wait to see! You’re the queen of summer romance books, but what would you say to the fans who are asking for you to write a full book with a winter setting?
My brother and my husband are also telling me to do that so I can give myself a bit more time off! But I don't know! There are bits throughout different seasons in the books, but because I write in the fall and the winter, I love being in the summer. And there are so many readers who only read in the summer, you know, they get a chance to read one book, they can read it on their vacation in the summer, and I love being an author for them.
So, it's not a no, it's just, I have no desire to write, like, a holiday romance. I'm just not interested.
Our Perfect Storm uses nostalgia in such a powerful way, for the characters individually and obviously throughout their nearly-lifelong friendship. I especially loved the quote “I’ve found that going back to the beginning is sometimes the only way to move forward.”
One of the scenes that stuck out to me was when Frankie was in her old bedroom and it says “I find that time collapses” before describing a Katniss Everdeen poster, track and field ribbons, and clips of magazine recipes in the room. Did writing that scene make you think of your own childhood room? Did you have any specific posters or special mementos displayed?
I so did. My childhood bedroom does not exist anymore—my parents sold our house gosh, maybe 15 years ago. But I find when I'm in certain places, I feel like that, and certainly, I think people often feel like this when they're with their family. You're with your family or your siblings, and you're like, "Suddenly, I am 12." And time just kind of collapses depending on who you're with or where you are.
My bedroom was covered in magazines—one wall was an entire collage of magazine pages, advertisements, things I thought looked really cool. I loved, loved magazines. That was at the end of high school, but before that, when I was a bit younger, my door was just my celebrity crushes, who were Brad Pitt and Brad Renfro, who was my love when I was younger. My room was dark red and I had black and white photography on the walls that I bought from IKEA that I thought was very sophisticated.

So artsy, I love it! There are also a couple of popular romance tropes in the book, like childhood friends to lovers, and the "only one bed." Is there any romance trope that you feel like, "I will absolutely never have this in one of my books" or do you have a favorite romance trope that you love using?
I think my favorite is either "friends to lovers" or "second chance romance." I don't think about the tropes when I'm writing. Like every romance, any kind of genre of fiction, any song, you can pick out the tropes from it, but when I'm brainstorming, I'm not thinking about, "Oh, I should, I haven't done this," "I should try this," or "I love writing this." It's not in my toolkit anyway. And for that reason, I probably can't say that there are certain things I wouldn't do. I'm sure there are, but I don't have a list.
Right. It's one of those things I never really thought about until following different BookTok accounts and things like that, and seeing them as part of their reviews.
Yes, for sure. I didn't know about them when I was writing my first novel. I wasn't aware of "trope culture," I think we could call it. And of course, if you're a reader, you identify these thematic buckets for sure. But then once I was exposed to Bookstagram and the way that we talk about books online, tropes are such a huge part of that.
Absolutely. Are there any plans already in the works for a TV show or movie for Our Perfect Storm?
I personally see it as a movie. Those conversations are all kind of happening now!
Related: Which Carley Fortune Books Are Being Adapted Into Movies and TV Shows—and What We Know So Far
And obviously we've talked about Our Perfect Storm having references to Little Women. Can you share some of your all-time favorite love stories, whether it's, you know, romanticcomedies, contemporary romance books or classic literature with a love story?
Definitely Anne of Green Gables, 100%, and obviously, Little Women, and the Little Women adaptations. One of my favorite romance novels is Seven Days in June, by Tia Williams. And romcom? 13 Going on 30. I adore that movie. Those are the ones that are top of mind for me.
Those are great ones. Oh, Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo... I went through a Mark Ruffalo obsession after that movie.
Me too. Me too. Also, just like the magazine of it all. "Take apart the FOB, overhaul the BOB"—the use of "FOB" and "BOB" made me so happy in that in that film.

Here's How I Eat Gluten-Free at Disney World and Miss Nothing
For people who have celiac diseases or a gluten intolerance, traveling can almost feel like a nightmare. It can be incredibly anxiety-inducing trying to figure out where you’ll be able to get your next “safe” meal, and especially when you’re with other people, it can feel like you’re a burden. I am constantly traveling around the world, and the one place that I feel like I can let all of my gluten-eating anxiety melt away is at Disney.
Disney takes food allergies and intolerances very seriously, so much so that most eateries have dedicated allergy menus to accommodate people who need to be careful of certain ingredients. These menus cover common allergies to items like gluten, wheat, egg, shellfish, peanut, tree nut, soy and sesame. I’ve also noticed that Disney is incredibly accommodating, making special gluten-free meals as well. You want gluten-free mickey waffles? Disney will make them for you. Craving a pasta dish? Disney will be happy to make your dish of choice gluten-free.
For people who are new to Disney World or are new to eating gluten-free, I have two key tips that will help you eat carefree while visiting the parks and resorts. So, grab your Mickey ears, and let’s get into it!

View this post on Instagram Use The Disney World App For Quick Service RestaurantsThe Disney World app is an incredible tool for so many things, and one of those things is ordering food from quick service restaurants directly on the app. Whether you’re in a park or visiting one of Disney’s resorts, this can be an option for you. All you need to do is open the app, click on the quick service restaurant you’re wanting to go to, and hit “order food”.
The Disney World App is incredibly easy to use.Melissa Cabey/Disney World App
The top of the menu will allow you to click on a variety of categories like drinks, sides and entrees. If you keep scrolling through those icons, the last one will be “Allergy-Friendly”. Once you click that, you will be able to filter for a gluten/wheat allergy-friendly menu. One of the best parts about this is that you’re not forced to just choose from meals that are already naturally gluten-free. You won’t be stuck just eating a plate of grilled chicken and lettuce or a bun-less cheeseburger. Instead, these menus offer most food items in a completely gluten-free version.
These gluten-free chicken tenders are to die for.Melissa Cabey
Let’s take Pinocchio Village Haus in Magic Kingdom, for example. There, you can get gluten-free pizza (it’s delicious), gluten-free macaroni and cheese, and gluten-free chicken strips. The Disney gluten-free chicken strips are my absolute favorite–and fun fact, they are different at each location. I think that the ones served at Pinocchio Village Haus are the best, so make sure to try those out.
When ordering, you have to choose a window of time to pick up your order. I recommend doing this early, because the staff does take extra time when preparing an allergy safe meal. Once you hit your window of time, you have to go back in the app and click “I’m here, prepare my order”. Anything made allergy-friendly will be served on a purple tray, and will also have a toothpick with a purple top. This indicates that your meal is gluten-free.

Ask The Wait Staff For An Allergy Menu or Guide At Sit-Down RestaurantsWhen it comes to sit-down restaurants at Disney World or Disneyland, the offerings are very similar to those of the quick-service restaurants. Many meals can be made gluten-free (like pastas or buns for a burger). My number one tip is to tell your waiter right as you get seated that you cannot eat gluten. From there, they will let you know how that specific restaurant handles the allergy.
View this post on InstagramDuring my most recent trip to Disney World, I experienced a few different ways in which sit-down restaurants handled my order. For a buffet-style restaurant, like Tusker House in Animal Kingdom, I was given a pamphlet-like guide to bring up when I picked out my food from the buffet. It had a ton of allergies listed in a chart, and from there I was able to see exactly which dishes I could take food from that was gluten-free. Each food offering was kept very separate from gluten-containing foods, so I wasn’t worried about cross contamination.
Another spot that my family dined at was Ohana, which is located in the Polynesian Resort. We went for brunch, which is served family-style. At this restaurant, I was given my own platter of gluten-free food, that way I didn’t have to deal with cross-contamination from my family picking things up from the different dishes on the table. I was given a gluten-free donut, gluten-free Mickey waffles, sausage, eggs, potato pancakes, and potato wedges.

For a-la-carte restaurants, like Cinderella’s Royal Table, I was given a separate allergy menu. There, you would look at each dish and read the allergy list underneath it. For example, I ordered the roasted lamb chops, and underneath it said “For gluten/wheat, egg, fish/shellfish, peanut/tree nut, sesame, soy allergies”. This is how I knew it was safe for me to eat. One of the biggest standouts at this restaurant was the cheesecake, which was able to be made gluten-free. It was in the shape of a block of cheese, with an adorable piece of chocolate that had an image of Cinderella’s little mice on the front. The flavor of the cheesecake and the gluten-free crumbles sprinkled around was absolutely perfect.

My Go-To Disney World Gluten-Free "Bonus" TipsBeyond the menus and the app, there are a few extra ways to ensure your trip is as delicious as it is stress-free. Here are my top insider tips for the gluten-free traveler:
- Visit the Gluten-Free Holy Grail: If you find yourself at Disney Springs, you absolutely have to stop by Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC. The entire facility is 100% gluten-free, vegan and soy-free. Being able to walk into a bakery and order anything in the glass case without asking a single question is a rare, beautiful feeling!
- The DOLE Whip is Your Best Friend: One of the most iconic Disney snacks—the DOLE Whip—is naturally gluten-free (and vegan!). It’s the perfect, safe treat to grab when everyone else is eyeing the churro carts.
- Check the Toppers: When you order a gluten-free burger or sandwich, sometimes the bun can be a bit dry. Most quick-service spots have a toppings bar where you can grab fresh lettuce, tomatoes and pickles to dress it up. Just be mindful of cross-contamination at the shared station, or ask a Cast Member for fresh toppings from the back!
- Look for the "Snack Binder": If you’re at a small outdoor kiosk or popcorn stand and aren't sure about the ingredients, ask to see their Allergy Reference Guide. It’s a binder that lists every single ingredient in their snacks, so you can double-check before you buy.
- Resort Quick-Service Staples: If you’re staying on-property, your resort’s food court usually has a dedicated gluten-free toaster and carries brands like Enjoy Life or Omis. I always grab a few pre-packaged cookies or brownies to keep in my park bag for those moments when I need a quick snack between lightning lanes.
- Don't miss the Allergy-Friendly Beignets at Port Orleans Resort—French Quarter, which are both gluten-free and vegan—and life-changing, in my humble opinion.
With these tips in your back pocket, you can stop focusing on the labels and start focusing on the memories. Happy eating!

Unlike bedding, I don't need my towels to match my mood, but I do need them to do their job—like being absorbent and maybe a little snuggly. And in my household of five, I feel like our towels get a lot of use. So much so that I'm pretty much replacing them every two years like clockwork. With that in mind, I try to scoop up extras when I see a good quality set on sale, because I know the clock is ticking on whatever is happening in the linen closet.
And since the shower schedule in my house needs to move fast by design, quick-drying towels are my favorite. They're really just crafted to dry faster than a traditional towel after use or washing, which helps cut down on dampness, musty smells and mildew.

1972 Soft Rock Gem Turned a Story About a Simple Day Into Chart Gold
Few songs have ever captured the magic of an ordinary day quite like this 1972 soft rock gem that turned simple moments into chart-topping gold.
Chicago was already a wildly popular pop-rock band when "Saturday in the Park" catapulted them into Billboard's Top 5. Just weeks after its chart debut in August, the song peaked at No. 3, cementing its place as one of the early '70s most beloved songs.
Although the band previously had huge success with the Top 10 hits "Make Me Smile" (1970)
"25 or 6 to 4" (1970), "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" (1971), and "Beginnings/Colour My World" (1971), "Saturday in the Park" was their highest-charting song of the decade.
The tune was written by band member Robert Lamm, who penned the song about a perfect day. He told Billboard in 2017 he shared what he "had experienced" after watching back film footage he previously shot in Central Park, New York.

Lamm said, “'Saturday in the Park' is a prime example of how I take from what I experience in the world. It was written as I was looking at footage from a film I shot in Central Park, over a couple of years, back in the early ‘70s."
He continued, "I shot this film, and somewhere down the line, I edited it into some kind of a narrative. As I watched the film, I jotted down some ideas based on what I was seeing and had experienced."

Chris Walter/WireImage"And it was really kind of that peace and love thing that happened in Central Park and in many parks all over the world, perhaps on a Saturday, where people just relax and enjoy each other’s presence, and the activities we observe and the feelings we get from feeling a part of a day like that."
The success of "Saturday in the Park" helped the band's Chicago V become a defining record of the decade. It would spend more than two months at the top of the charts and became one of the year's biggest sellers.

More than five decades after its release, "Saturday in the Park" still resonates with listeners. The song remains as popular today as ever, a testament to its timeless appeal.

1974 Country-Pop Classic Became One of the Most Unforgettable Novelty Hits of the ‘70s
The 1970s were a decade filled with novelty hits. From “Mr. Jaws” to “Disco Duck” to “Convoy,” the decade featured a long streak of comedic classics—including one titled “The Streak.”
In 1974, Jim Stafford hit it big in the novelty song genre. His country-pop song “Spiders & Snakes” appeared on his self-titled album and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of that year.
Written by Stafford and David Bellamy, “Spiders & Snakes” featured a spoken narrative and a catchy country-pop chorus as it told the ill-fated romance between the narrator and his crush, Mary Lou. The song sold reached gold disc status by the Recording Industry Association of America, and Stafford became a frequent guest on daytime talk shows and awards shows. By 1975, he was popular enough to score his own summertime variety show on ABC.
Based on an untrue storyStafford’s sense of humor was apparent during his many talk show guest spots. During an appearance on American Bandstand, he told host Dick Clark the cheeky inspiration for the song. “’Spiders & Snakes’ is a true story that I made up, and based on an incident that never occurred,” he cracked.
Stafford gave a more serious answer in an interview with Gary James’ Classic Bands.
“I'm not really sure where that deep little hole is, and I don't know why I write songs like that. I just do," he shared. "I'm kind of a fan of my own stuff. I like ‘Spiders & Snakes’ and I like ‘Swamp Witch.’ Those songs are kind of different. They were certainly challenging to write. So, I'm glad that they kind of caught on and did okay. I have a grateful heart about that.”
"To me, the hard part of that stuff is it's not too hard to figure something like that out, but the tricky part is how many times can they listen to it before they get tired of it," he added. “I gotta tell you, I felt very fortunate about those songs because they were a specific kind of song, you might say comedy.”
RELATED: The Wild Backstory Behind the Novelty Hit ‘Convoy’
The ‘Spiders & Snakes’ idea was almost rejectedThe original idea for “Spiders & Snakes” came after Bellamy and his brother got drunk and camped out in a bunkhouse on their family’s Florida ranch.
Howard Bellamy recalled to Classic Bands, “About three or four in the morning, what we call a rat snake or chicken snake got in the bed with me, and of course I ran out the door pretty fast and made quite a bit of noise, woke David up. …I think we really owe the credit and inspiration to the chicken snake. The next morning, he wrote that song, and it probably took a little over an hour.”
Bellamy noted that it was a “fluke” that the early version of the song ended up with Stafford.
"We had shopped it around,” he recalled. “We got word that this producer who produced all of Stafford's stuff was from that area, and he also produced ‘Let Your Love Flow.’ We sent a demo to Stafford, and it was kind of thrown in the reject pile. The producer actually didn't care for it. Stafford saw the title on the cassette box there and just picked it out of the reject pile and listened to it. And he loved it immediately and went on to record it.”
Bellamy noted that Stafford was both a talented musician and a comedian.
“He was very successful with ‘Spiders & Snakes’ and bought a house in Hollywood,” Bellamy shared. “He was a comedian. That's what he was. He was one of the best guitar players ever. He was just incredible. Classical, any kind of guitar. He was just amazing. Did stand-up and sang. Did guitar solos. Just a one-man show. That's the way he was.”
Stafford performed "Spiders & Snakes" and his other hits for decades at the Jim Stafford Theatre in Branson, Missouri.
Cinco de Mayo Without the Booze? These Alcohol Alternatives Bring the Flavor
Cinco de Mayo has always been about the ritual—something cold in your hand, something citrusy on the palate, something that makes the moment feel like a celebration. But with more people leaning into alcohol alternatives—from Dry January holdovers to year-round moderation—that ritual is evolving.
This year, the party doesn’t have to include tequila to feel like one.
Mash Gang: Non-Alcoholic Beer That Still HitsIf your Cinco plans lean more cerveza than cocktail, Mash Gang is worth a look.
Founded in 2020 as an experiment between four friends, the brand has since brewed more than 200 alcohol-free beers, earning serious recognition—including multiple Brewer of the Year nominations and a dominant presence on Untappd’s top-rated NA beer lists.
The lineup doesn’t play it safe:
- Chug – a hazy IPA with bold, hoppy character
- Glug – a crisp, easy-drinking cerveza-style lager
- Journey Juice – a fruited hazy pale ale with bright, juicy notes
- Lesser Evil – a rich chocolate cherry stout
The goal is simple: deliver the full craft beer experience without the alcohol—and without the trade-offs.

THC Drinks Step Into the SpotlightFor those who still want a buzz—just not from alcohol—THC beverages are quickly becoming the go-to swap.
Total Wine & More’s lineup shows just how wide the category has become:
- Nowadays 5mg THC offers a lightly sparkling, fruit-forward sip that feels tailor-made for warm weather
- Loft 10mg THC Lemon Lime leans crisp and citrusy, with zero sugar and zero calories for easy, all-day drinking
- Cann offers THC beverages in a variety of flavors and strenghts. The Lemon Lavender brings a more delicate, elevated vibe, blending floral lavender with bright lemon
Most of these drinks are designed for lower doses and quicker onset, making them easier to pace—closer to sipping a cocktail than committing to a traditional edible.

Señorita: A Tequila Alternative That Plays the PartCinco de Mayo without something margarita-adjacent? That’s a tough sell—unless you’ve got a convincing substitute.
Señorita’s 1777 THC spirit steps in with a familiar foundation—agave and lime—layered with dragon fruit and a subtle chili finish. Designed for mixing or sipping, it delivers 10mg of THC per pour in a 750mL bottle, offering a cocktail-style experience without the alcohol.
And if you want something ready to crack open, their canned margarita lineup leans fully into the fiesta:
- Lime Jalapeño Margarita
- Grapefruit Paloma
- Mango Margarita
- Ranch Water
Each is made with real juice and organic agave, available in both 5mg and 10mg options—light, portable, and built for sharing.
Cinco de Mayo isn’t really about what’s in the glass—it’s about the feeling that comes with it. And increasingly, that feeling is less about alcohol and more about choice. Whether it’s a hop-forward NA beer, a citrusy THC seltzer, or a margarita-inspired mocktail with a twist, the options are expanding—and the party’s still very much on.
