Why Retirees Are Leaving Florida for These 'Halfback States' — and Never Looking Back

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 4:35pm

For decades, Florida has been the gold standard for retirement in the United States. With a long coastline, endless sunshine, and no income tax, retirees thought this was the dream. For many retirees, the reality of living in Florida wasn’t what they were promised.

A lot of seniors end up leaving Florida for “Halfback States” that have similar appeals without the crowds or expense. The locations are offering retirees the weather and comforts without all the headaches. So what are the “Halfback States” and what do they offer for retirees?

The “Halfback Retirees”

“Halfback Retirees” refer to people who left the North for Florida, only to find it wasn’t what they thought, and decide to move half of the way back. The reality for many people is that Florida is crowded and expensive, with uncomfortable weather, according to an article on Realtor.com. Instead of staying, many people are going to the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Why Leave Florida

Florida advertises itself as a great place to retire because of its no-state-income-tax policy, but the fees associated with living in Florida often outpace those savings. In fact, in 2025, Florida saw almost as many retirees move out of the state as move in, according to Moneywise.

Floridians have seen a 75% increase in home insurance, well above the 38% national average, due to increasingly volatile weather. It’s not just hurricanes either; the heat and the humidity have become so intense that Floridians need to run their AC most of the year. Utility bills are already high, but Floridians are relying on temperature control more than ever.

Overdevelopment and the cost of living create an inhospitable environment for people on fixed incomes, even when that income is significant. Property taxes have risen dramatically, as have home insurance premiums, and HOA fees never go away.

A study done by Florida Atlantic University shows that 80% of Floridians are concerned about the cost of housing and nearly 50% have considered leaving due to the state becoming unaffordable.

3 Halfback Destinations Worth Considering

Asheville, NC

Active retirees will love this city with access to the outdoors minus the heat. You’ll still experience all four seasons without the unbearable winters of the north or the sweltering southern summers. It’s framed by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Asheville has a thriving arts and culture scene.

North Carolina doesn’t tax Social Security income, and the cost of living is lower than pretty much any place you’ll find in Florida. Currently, Zillow lists the average home price at $463,235. That may seem a little high, but the average yearly insurance premium for a home at that price is just over $2,000. It’s a far cry from the $10,000 premiums many Floridians pay for the same type of property.

Charleston, SC

If you want the coast without the cost, this southern charmer has immense appeal. It’s steeped in history, and the city's beautiful architecture reflects its storied past. The climate has that warm coastal feel that many retirees crave.

South Carolina is leading the nation in attracting and keeping retirees, with it being the fastest-growing state for new residents 65+, having gained nearly 2,000 residents last year from Florida alone. That may be in part due to the fact that some retirement income is exempt from taxation, while the state also maintains affordable costs of living. The healthcare infrastructure is robust as well.

Home prices, according to Zillow, average around $596,003, with home insurance landing around $3,000 a year.

Chattanooga, TN

If you love the lights and music of Nashville, but not the increasingly expensive cost of living, Chattanooga is an alternative worth investigating. It offers access to the Tennessee River and the Appalachian Trail, but also has a revitalized, walkable downtown. The weather isn’t as unpredictable as Florida, and you’ll still experience a range of seasons.

Like Florida, Tennessee doesn’t tax any type of income. Unlike Florida, Tennessee is still widely affordable with a dramatically lower cost of living. Retirees on fixed incomes benefit both from no income tax and affordability. Home prices average out around $324,298, with home insurance on that type of property averaging about $3,000.

Is The Halfback Life For You?

If you’re already in Florida and finding it isn’t what you thought, or you’re looking at places to retire, the halfback life may be for you. Florida used to be the gold standard for retirement living, but as it has become expensive and unenjoyable, there are better places to settle down in retirement.

Donald Trump Debuts the New Air Force One — and It's Leading the July 4th Washington, D.C. Flyover

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 4:35pm

President Donald Trumpjust unveiled the brand-new Air Force One. The Boeing 747-8 is a $400 million luxury plane gifted to the U.S. from Qatar.

Trump introduced the brand-new plane at a press conference from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland outside of Washington, D.C., saying, “When you see it, you won’t believe it, actually. The quality of woods, the quality of materials. The quality of the engines. These engines are the finest. They’re the best in the world. Nothing like it.“

View this post on Instagram

He went on to thank Qatar’s government for the gift, adding, “It’s really an honor. And I want to thank the Emir of Qatar. He’s a fantastic guy. He went through a lot over the last few months. He’s very brave.”

Trump also shared plans for a Fourth of July celebratory flyover in Washington, D.C., led by Air Force One: “And I think I can say we’re going to do a flyover like no flyover. This is going to lead a group of many, many planes. This will be a flyover on July 4th. I think I can say the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Spending a couple of bucks extra for a little fuel. We own the planes, so all we need is a little extra fuel, right?”

The President continued, giving a shout-out of sorts to his pilot, saying, “There’s a rumor that when you fly the President, you have to be the best pilot. So my pilot’s very good.”

Of course, in describing the plane, Trump managed to slip in a not-so-humble brag about Air Force One: “Now when we land at airports in London, in Germany, in different places, nobody tops this one. And that’s the way we have to have it for our country. Nobody even comes close. So my return from the G7 summit was the last planned trip aboard the VC-25A, that’s the 747 that will probably do the museum thing…It’s a plane that was authorized by President Ronald Reagan many years ago.”

Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink added (in an Air Force press release), “The safety and security of the commander in chief is our highest priority.” Meink continued, “From the beginning, we meticulously evaluated every requirement to accelerate delivery while maintaining the high standards expected of the presidential mission. This effort proves that the U.S. Air Force can move fast without sacrificing quality, security, or reliability.”

According to the Air Force, the new VC-25B is now ready for commissioning flights. These are Air Force One’s “final exam” before the President begins using the plane for routine flights.

Hailee Steinfeld Reveals Daughter's Name 2 Months After Giving Birth

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 4:32pm

For over two months, Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Allen have kept one major detail about their baby daughter private. Now, the actress is finally sharing it.

In a letter published to her Beau Society Substack newsletter on Friday, June 19, Steinfeld revealed that she and the Buffalo Bills quarterback named their daughter Harper Haize Allen.

The Hawkeye star explained her letter was prompted by questions from subscribers about motherhood and what she hopes her daughter might one day learn about her by reading the newsletter.

Addressing her daughter directly, Steinfeld wrote, "Dearest Harper, I'm in awe of you." The 29-year-old reflected on the whirlwind of emotions that have defined her first few months as a mother, describing the experience as both "beautiful and exhausting" and "The longest days and the shortest season all at once."

She also shared a sweet look at life with Allen behind closed doors. "Your daddy and I look at you often and ask each other the same question: How did we get so lucky to have you?" she wrote.

Throughout the letter, Steinfeld described the small moments like late-night wakeups, missed naps, and diaper changes. She also revealed that motherhood has changed her in ways she never expected. "It’s funny, I used to think motherhood was about raising a child," she wrote. "But now, I think being a mother is actually about allowing yourself to become someone new over and over again."

The emotional message concluded with the first public reveal of her daughter's full name. "And even though I know I am meant to guide you through this life, Harper Haize Allen, the truth is that already, you have taught me far more than I could ever teach you."

A black-and-white photo of Harper’s hand wrapped around Steinfeld’s finger also accompanied the letter.

The letter comes a month after Steinfeld gave fans a small glimpse at baby Harper in a belated Mother's Day Instagram post. While she and Allen have largely kept their daughter out of the public eye, the carousel featured tiny hands, little feet tucked into a strawberry-print outfit, homemade cards, and snapshots from a family celebration.

Steinfeld and Allen welcomed Harper in April.

From Lotso to Lilypad: ‘Toy Story’ Villains, Ranked

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 4:12pm

Toy Story 5 is officially in theaters and fans can't get enough of Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang. And while Pixar has created and grown these beloved characters over the past three decades (I first met Woody and Buzz when I was 12!), they've also done an incredible job of introducing unforgettable villains across the franchise. From Stinky Pete's shocking arc to Lotso's Sunnyside Daycare takeover, every film finds meaningful ways to challenge the gang.

Toy Story 5 takes this to another level with the sleek, smart tablet named Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee). But Lily doesn't want to destroy the toys—in fact, she's indifferent. All she cares about is being Bonnie's new best friend—and she's got group chats, games and an entire digital world to offer.

To celebrate the release of Toy Story 5, we're ranking every major villain in the franchise—because some of them aren't really bad guys when you break it down. And of course, we couldn't leave out the sidekicks and henchmen who deserve a spot for being pure nightmare fuel.

Read on to discover where Toy Story's villains rank—from misunderstood and misguided to irredeemably evil.

Toy Story Villains, Ranked9. Lilypad – 'Toy Story 5' "Even though Jessie and Lily are polar opposites, they both fundamentally care about Bonnie," says Greta Lee, who voices Lilypad.

Photo courtesy of Pixar. © 2026 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

The newest "villain" on this list might not actually be one. Initially presenting as a sleek, frog-shaped smart tablet, Lilypad (Greta Lee) connects Bonnie to a digital hangout called "The Pond." It's packed with group chats and games that pull her away from Woody, Jessie and the rest of the crew. And when a friend mocks Bonnie for still playing with toys during a sleepover, Bonnie pulls back from Jessie entirely, sending the gang into a full-blown identity crisis.

But here's the twist: Director Andrew Stanton has revealed that Lilypad isn't a true antagonist. "Lots of people at the studio wanted her to be a villain, and it was so hard to strike the balance because I think we all come in with such loaded emotions towards devices," he told Variety. "At the end of the day, it never made sense." Whether the toys win Bonnie back the old-fashioned way or Lilypad surprises everyone with her own act of high-tech heroism, we'll have to wait and see.

8. The Mutant Toys – 'Toy Story' Even though I know they're harmless, these guys still scare me when they first appear onscreen.

YouTube

So here's the thing: At first, I was completely terrified when these mutant toys—led by Babyface—first appeared. They're so damn scary—even when I rewatch it now as an adult! But after it's revealed that they're actually sweet, pure characters who want to help, I get tears in my eyes. Maybe it seems minor, but it's just another example of Pixar packing so many incredible messages into one children's film. In this case, it's never judge a book by its cover.

7. Gabby Gabby – 'Toy Story 4' Gabby Gabby is a vintage doll from the 1950s.

YouTube

There's no question about it: Gabby Gabby's methods were completely terrifying. Ventriloquist dummies are nightmare bait on their own, but enlisting them to kidnap Woody and steal his voice box!? Maniacal.

Eventually, however, we learn about her harrowing backstory and discover that in reality, Gabby Gabby (Mad Men's Christina Hendricks) is a vintage doll with a factory defect. She truly believes that if her voice box worked, she would finally be worthy of a child's love. When she finally gets the voice box and still gets rejected by her dream kid? It's absolutely heartbreaking. Her tearjerker ending proves she was never actually a villain—she just desperately needed a second chance.

6. Sid Phillips – 'Toy Story' Sid and Woody in Toy Story

YouTube

Sid (voiced by Erik von Detten) has always been seen as a terrifying toy torturer. But when you actually think about it, he had absolutely zero idea that his toys were alive. He didn't think he was actually hurting anyone while assembling his mutant creations. Instead, they were more like a testament to his impressive imagination. And the moment Sid realized his toys actually had feelings, he was completely terrified and changed his ways.

5. The Cymbal-Banging Monkey – 'Toy Story 3' Lotso's loyal, rabid guard monkey made sure no toy ever escaped Sunnyside Daycare.

YouTube

Sunnyside Daycare’s unhinged head of security wasn't so much a villain as he was Lotso's loyal, rabid guard dog. Sitting alone in the dark control room, he monitored the camera feeds with bulging, bloodshot eyes and a horrifying permanent grin. But the real nightmare fuel? The moment Woody triggers his alarm. Watching this monkey's mouth unhinge to reveal a pair of massive, jagged fangs is an actual jumpscare. Thankfully, the end credits reveal he gets a happy ending—and a sweet pair of sunglasses—under Barbie and Ken's new management.

4. Al McWhiggin aka Chicken Man – 'Toy Story 2' Al McWhiggin—aka the "Chicken Man"—was hoping to get rich by selling Woody, Jessie and Bullseye to a toy museum in Japan.

YouTube

Al McWhiggin—voiced by Wayne Knight and better known to millennial audiences as the "Chicken Man" or Seinfeld's Newman—wasn't plotting world domination or forcing toys into hard labor. The sleazy owner of Al's Toy Barn just wanted a massive payout. He’s less of an evil mastermind and more of a greedy opportunist who views Woody, Jessie and Bullseye strictly as his ticket to a cushy early retirement. He might lack the sinister, calculated plotting, but his willingness to steal a beloved toy from a little girl's yard sale makes him pretty awful.

3. The Bensons – 'Toy Story 4' Gabby Gabby had The Bensons at her disposal.

Pixar

Ventriloquist dummies are inherently creepy, but Gabby Gabby’s silent henchmen took things to another level in Toy Story 4. Patrolling the aisles of the Second Chance Antique store, they looked like something straight out of a haunted house movie rather than a Pixar film. Their floppy walking, dead-eyed stares and complete lack of dialogue multiplied the creep factor. The fact that they never spoke a single word—just chased Woody and Forky down in the dark—earns them a spot on this list.

2. Stinky Pete the Prospector 'Toy Story 2' Don't let Stinky Pete's sweet grandfatherly act fool you!

YouTube

Stinky Pete (Frasier'sKelsey Grammer) is the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. He spends the first half of Toy Story 2 as a wise, comforting grandfather figure—only to later be revealed as one seriously demented dude. Spending decades "mint in the box" on a dime-store shelf—while shiny toys like Buzz Lightyear took over—completely broke his spirit and turned him into a psychopath. Instead of yearning to be loved by a child, he gaslights Jessie and Woody, determined to lock them behind glass in a Japanese museum forever. And when his plan is finally foiled? He drops the sweet old man act and literally tries to slash Woody to pieces with a pickaxe!

1. Lotso (aka Lots-o'-Huggin' Bear) – 'Toy Story 3' How could a cute purple bear end up being so scary?

Disney/Pixar

Lotso—voiced by the late, great Ned Beatty, who was famously known as Lex Luthor's henchman Otis in the classic Superman films—remains the absolute gold standard for Pixar villains. Abandoned and accidentally replaced by his original owner, Daisy, his devastation turned him into a deeply cynical, ruthless character. Lotso turned Sunnyside Daycare into a terrifying destination, deliberately locking every new arrival into the Caterpillar Room to be destroyed by out-of-control toddlers while he and his pals live a life of luxury in the older kids' room.

But what cements Lotso's legacy at the very top of the villain pyramid is not a redemption arc—instead, it's his final, unforgivable act: After Woody and Buzz risk absolutely everything to save his life in the dump, Lotso chooses to leave them in the roaring incinerator.

Jon Bon Jovi Admits He Considers Himself the 'Prince' to This Legendary Rocker's 'Boss'

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 3:40pm

Growing up,Jon Bon Joviconsidered fellow New Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen a mentor, something he claimed was common among musicians of the Garden State.

"Being from New Jersey and being at all in the music business, you had to know what the E Street band was, even if it wasn't your musical tastes," Bon Jovi, 64, explained to PEOPLE. "He is the cornerstone of New Jersey rock and roll. Of course, there was Frank Sinatra, there was Frankie Valli, there was Whitney Houston; there's incredible singers, but the E Street band was hugely important for anyone who picked up an electric guitar."

Shared Roots

Like Springsteen, 76, Bon Jovi started out at the Stone Pony, the famous Asbury Park music club that opened in 1974. Along with local bands, national acts like the Ramones, Elvis Costello, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and the Smithereens also played there before their careers took off.

Becoming friends with Springsteen was "one of the highlights" of his career, as he looked at the E Street Band as New Jersey's version of the Beatles.

A Hometown Hero

"They made the impossible possible — 25 miles from your house was a guy that was making records," he explained. "They weren't just the posters on the wall; it was just right there. So when you're 17, that's like seeing Jesus and the disciples."

Eventually, the two developed a closer connection, which he talked about in 2024's Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. "Our connection is deep, on a whole different level of friendship, because how many guys can talk like we can talk, in close quarters, about life, and love, and loss," he said.

New Jersey Royalty

Despite having very different musical careers, they've experienced many similarities, so much so that Bon Jovi joked that he's "the prince of New Jersey," while Springsteen remains on the throne.

For Bon Jovi, Springsteen was more than just a musical mentor—he was proof that rock stardom was possible right in his backyard. Their shared roots at the Stone Pony blossomed into a deep, unparalleled friendship, leaving Springsteen as the undisputed king of New Jersey rock, and Bon Jovi as its proud prince.

Nancy Guthrie Update: Former FBI Agent Raises New Questions About Possible Attack Theory

Fri, 06/19/2026 - 3:34pm

A retired FBI agent is raising questions about the Nancy Guthrie investigation, explaining why certain details could make the case especially difficult to solve.

Jennifer Coffindaffer took to X to share her latest thoughts on the case.

Coffindaffer outlined several elements that she believes would point to a complex operation, writing, "This attack was sophisticated enough to: Stump the FBI and LE for 4 months. Send ransom messages via media website in boxes that can't be traced. Set up a Crypto Bitcoin account whose wallet holder can't be identified. Hire a mope(s) to do the job who will stay silent."

"How was Nancy targeted if it was a Wrench by Proxy?" she wondered. "It just has to be someone familiar with [Tucson] and one of their most famous celebrities-Savannah. Someone they knew would pay, until mope messed up like mopes do."

"I just hope Nancy will be found and those responsible will face justice. If it is a Wrench by Proxy, the case will be much tougher to solve," Coffindaffer added.

She has previously discussed the possibility that Guthrie’s disappearance could involve a “wrench attack," which involves "the use of physical force or intimidation to gain access to a victim's cryptocurrency holdings," according to TRM.

Although investigators have not said whether they believe Guthrie’s disappearance involved a “wrench attack," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said that he had "flagged it to the investigation team," according to Fox News Digital's Mike Ruiz.

Guthrie, 84, has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Investigators believe that she was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night. Despite receiving thousands of tips—and obtaining video footage of a possible suspect on Guthrie's front stoop—authorities have not publicly named a person of interest in the case.

Bibigo Stir-Fried Kimchi Rice, $9.97 at Costco View this post on Instagram

Spotted recently by @costcofam4u, who quickly shared the news online, Bibigo Stir-Fried Kimchi Rice Bowls are a Korean-style microwaveable meal featuring fried rice mixed with kimchi, vegetables and scrambled eggs. At just $10 for six bowls, this deal not only secures you a week of easy dinners but also brings the cost down to roughly $1.60 per serving.

"If you're a fan of Korean-inspired flavors, keep an eye out for this Bibigo Stir-Fried Kimchi Rice at Costco," Amanda captioned her post. "Each box includes 6 microwaveable bowls that are ready in about 90 seconds, making them a quick option for lunch, dinner, or an easy side dish."

As for the ingredients that bring the dish to life, each bowl includes cabbage, onion, kimchi, scrambled eggs, carrots and green onion, all coming together for a savory, well-seasoned solo meal.

How to Enjoy Bibigo Stir Fried Kimchi Rice Bowls

To prepare it, start by peeling off the paper lid of the main cup-shaped bowl. Inside, you'll find a smaller rice bowl with its own peel-off top, along with a kimchi sauce packet. Peel open the rice bowl and cut a corner off the sauce packet, then microwave both together on a microwave-safe plate. Once heated, pour everything back into the main bowl, mix well and enjoy.

To elevate the meal further, you can follow a similar process on the stovetop using a skillet, which will give it more of a fried-rice finish rather than the steamed version you'll get in the microwave. You can also use that as an opportunity to add more fresh vegetables like spinach, bell peppers or zucchini, or pair it with a side of soup or dumplings for a more complete dinner experience.

1971 Folk Classic, Written as a Love Letter, Remains a Haunting Melancholy Anthem

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 3:13pm

There's a beautifully haunting feeling when listening to Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat." Released in 1971, the folk track had often been open to discussion among fans due to the story behind its lyrics and the real-life inspiration.

The singer, poet, and novelist became known for developing songs that rattled emotions, with his most famous being "Hallelujah." In 1971, he released "Famous Blue Raincoat" for his third studio album, Songs of Love and Hate. It didn't become a mainstream success on the charts when it was released, but later became known as a melancholy anthem.

Among fans, "Famous Blue Raincoat" became more notably known for being written as a love letter, with its lyrics referring to a love triangle. Throughout the song, it references the narrator, a woman named Jane, and the other man, who is referred to only briefly as "my brother, my killer." Whether the love triangle was based on real-life experience is up for debate.

According to Far Out magazine, Cohen broke down the concept of the track for the BBC and admits he doesn't remember if it was real or not.

“The problem with that song is that I’ve forgotten the actual triangle. Whether it was my own – of course, I always felt that there was an invisible male seducing the woman I was with, now whether this one was incarnate or merely imaginary, I don’t remember. I’ve always had the sense that either I’ve been that figure in relation to another couple or there’d been a figure like that in relation to my marriage," he said.

Despite the popularity of "Famous Blue Raincoat" among fans, Cohen also admitted that he's "never been satisfied" with the piece. He revealed he "never felt that this one, that I really nailed the lyric. I’m ready to concede something to the mystery, but secretly, I’ve always felt that there was something about the song that was unclear.”

For decades, even fans have felt that way about the track and its unknown inspiration. Some believe the song's lyrics are too specific not to be about a certain person, or something that is easily forgotten. "Famous Blue Raincoat" also has a real-life incident attached that inspired its title.

In 1975's The Best of Leonard Cohen album, the liner notes reveal there was a real blue raincoat. Cohen details having had a Burberry raincoat he bought in London in 1959 that his girlfriend didn't like at the time. He recalls the coat having been stolen from Marianne's loft in New York City during the early '70s, and at the time, he wasn't wearing it as often.

The Parthenon Finally Sheds Its Scaffolding— Here's Why Its 'Facelift' Was So Dire

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 3:04pm

For the first time in 220 years, visitors to the Parthenon are seeing the ancient Greek monument in a new light. All of the scaffolding surrounding it has finally been removed because a major restoration project is now complete. The restoration was necessary due to war damage, weather impact, and looting over the years. A European Union program funded the project. The restoration of the pediment, which was completed recently, began in 2017.

A New Look at the Parthenon

The Parthenon’s new look features newly installed marble blocks into the western side where long-empty gaps once existed.

The project was no easy feat. It required considerable technical skill to restore the west pediment to its original shape. It’s said to be one of the most complex projects the Acropolis Restoration Service has taken on. The surviving ancient pieces were bonded and used along with new marble. The second marble block is completely new. The work has restored the Parthenon’s architectural integrity.

Culture Minister, Lina Mendoni commented on the restoration, stating,

“Today, we see the western pediment of the Parthenon as it has not been seen for two centuries. This is a moment of historic significance for the monument, for the Acropolis and for world culture. It is a moment that fills us with pride, but also with a sense of responsibility to continue, with the same consistency and commitment, the vital work of protecting and showcasing this foremost symbol of Western civilization.”

Mendoni went on to say that while everyone is proud of the work that was done, there is now a responsibility to protect the ancient monument. This can help to prevent any future restoration work.

    Visitor Limits

The Greek government has taken steps to preserve the Parthenon by limiting visitors. This may be more important now than ever, as the renovations will likely attract many visitors to the Parthenon.

The site has not been shy of visitors during the restoration process. An estimated 4.5 million people visited in 2024. In 2023, the government implemented a visitor cap limiting daily arrivals to 20,000. Visitors are now required to make a reservation for a timed entry slot. They must also pay a general admission fee of around $35 during the peak summer months. Private group tours are also available.

Carrie Underwood Stuns Fans With Explosive Drum Solo In Resurfaced Concert Footage: 'Had No Idea'

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:56pm

Carrie Underwood is full of surprises. The country star and American Idol judge may have no plans to tour this summer, but resurfaced videos of the vocal powerhouse's live performances are taking over social media. Despite her pitch-perfect vocals and endless energy onstage, it's not Underwood's singing that's going viral this time. It's her skills on the drums, proving there's no limit to this country queen's musical talents.

In early 2026, Underwood announced she had no plans to launch a full-scale tour during the summer and that her focus would be on family and her role as a judge on American Idol. Hungry for a taste of Underwood's dynamic live shows, fans have begun resharing videos from previous concert tours, including Underwood's Denim & Rhinestones Tour—a 43-date concert tour that spanned 2022 and 2023.

Carrie Underwood's Drum Solo Has Fans Doing a Double Take @thecountryconcertguy

    I’d go to every show. Just sayin. #carrieunderwood #pooreverybodyelse #rock #drums #concert

What's shocking about the resurfaced videos isn't Underwood's ability to effortlessly belt out every note to perfection—it's her epic drum solos. Yes, drums.

Surprised fans, many of whom were unaware of Underwood's percussion skills, were left in awe of the singer's seemingly endless array of talents. Video of her drum solo while singing "Poor Everybody Else" gives full hair-band vibes, right down to the hair flips. Carrie Underwood is more than a pretty voice. This country queen can rock out on the drums as well.

"I had no idea she could play the drums. Is this a new thing???" commented one fan.

Another gushed, "Seeing this in person is way better! It was amazing!"

    Amazing, indeed.

Resurfaced Concert Footage Reveals Carrie Underwood's Rock Side

Carrie Underwood's legendary belting ability and vocal stamina are part of her signature country-pop sound, but her surprise prowess on the drums is all classic rock. Her drum solo isn't Underwood's first foray into hard rock.

On the same tour, the singer performed her rendition of Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle," while Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" served as the final lead-in throughout the tour before Underwood took the stage.

The Denim & Rhinestones Era Showcased More Than Her Voice @thecountryconcertguy

Denim & Rhinestones was released in 2022 and remains Underwood's most recent studio album. While the Tennessee native shows no signs of ditching her country roots, her drum solo is not only a surprising hidden talent reveal but also a reminder of her ability to authentically perform across a wide range of musical genres, from country and pop to hard rock.

It's a rare talent—and one that's every bit as impressive as Carrie Underwood's ability to command a stage slaying an epic drum solo in front of thousands of fans.

Geena Davis ‘Disappointed’ by Netflix Cancelation

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:56pm

Geena Davis has admitted the cancelation of her first TV show in decades was devastating,

The 70-year-old actress appeared in Netflix's supernatural drama The Boroughs, which saw a retirement complex infiltrated by mysterious entities. The show only ran for one season.

On June 17, Netflix canceled the project, which was produced by The Duffer Brothers, who are the masterminds behind Stranger Things.

Geena told The Hollywood Reporterthat the show's cancellation was a shock, given it was featured in Netflix's Top 10 following its debut and was met with rave reviews from critics.

“Honestly, I don't know what happened,” she told the outlet. “I think it's probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it's not being picked up while it's still in the top 10.”

“Fortunately, the creators [Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews], who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we're all terribly disappointed,” Davis continued. “We didn't expect that.”

Although the show had mostly wrapped up the central story, the creators had envisaged multiple series of the streaming show. The show's closing moments hinted that not everything had been done with the story. “If we had made it as a limited series, then it would've been a big hit, and everybody would be happy,” she said.

The miniseries also starred Alfe Woodward, Alfred Molina and Bill Pullman. Davis says that the saddest thing about the cancellation is not getting to work with the cast again.

“[The cast] so fell in love with each other that we just wanted to keep working together,” she said. “I suggested that the creators write another series, a completely different story with the exact same actors and writers and crew, and we just do it again like an anthology series, right?” she recalled.

Currently, no other streamer has any plans of picking up The Boroughs.

129-Year-Old Novel, That Created Vampire Pop Culture, Originally Had a Much Goofier Name

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:54pm

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” doesn’t quite work when it comes to the title of an iconic villain, as the original name for Dracula by Bram Stoker proves.

The 1897 novel was almost called Wampyr, and yes, that was going to be the title of the character as well. It was only due to a chance trip to the library when Stoker was doing more research into the story that he realized he needed to change it, and even then, the name came from a misunderstanding.

Dracula has since become a basis for pop culture. There were many stories of vampires in history before this point, but it was this tale that helped to create the lore that would eventually become part of the majority of vampire stories. Not only did it create characters like Van Helsing and Renfield, but it also added to the lore of vampires not having a reflection and them being repelled by crucifixes and garlic.

Interestingly enough, it would be the 1922 movie Nosferatu that would create the lore of vampires burning in sunlight. Count Dracula was able to move around during the day.

However, Dracula almost went by the goofier name of "Wampyr," based on the 1819 novel The Vampyre by John William Polidori, along with his own nightmare of a vampire king rising from a tomb.

As he noted down ideas for a story, he went to visit Whitby, an English coastal town, where locals told him about a Russian ship that once ended up running aground in a massive storm. That ship was called The Dmitri, and it would become the basis for Dracula making his way to England on The Demeter.

As for the name of the vampire king, it came from a chance trip to the library while in Whitby. In a book, there was a military leader called Dracula, and Stoker mistakenly believed that this name meant “dragon” or “devil” in the Romanian language. So, he decided to cross out the name “Wampyr” and changed it to the more iconic name we know today.

That does rule out the idea that this pop culture began with nothing to do with the inspiration everyone mistakenly believes. Many viewed Dracula as a telling of Vlad the Impaler’s story, but he was never mentioned in any of Stoker’s notes. However, the name Dracula was given to many people in Romania, and it was one of Vlad the Impaler’s names, so it’s easy to understand the mistake.

Stoker took seven years to write his Gothic horror novel, and it went through many iterations. It’s hard to believe that anything would be as epic as it is today.

Noah Wyle Ranked Among 'Hottest Gen X Actors' — See the Top 5

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:48pm

The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards are fast approaching, and it looks like The Pitt will be another top contender this year.

In the meantime, its beloved leading man is continuing his hot streak by topping a new kind of Hollywood list, just released by AARP’s Movies for Grownups: the 25 Hottest Gen X Actors.

The stars from a generation that grew up on MTV, video stores and long afternoons at the mall are evidently still in their prime, churning out some of their most compelling work yet.

Wyle, 55, is ranked on the new list at No. 1 by AARP, which had given the Emmy winner an award back in January for his work on The Pitt.

"Being a parent with a little wisdom and maturity, getting to do this sort of the same thing again, but from a totally different perspective, more grounded, a little bit less anxiety, a little bit more appreciative, a little bit more presence has been a real gift," Wyle told AARP.

Wyle is joined on the 25 Hottest Gen X Actors list by Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Ryan Gosling, Taye Diggs and more.

“This year's list was built on a clear set of criteria: the quality and ambition of recent work, awards recognition, cultural resonance, and the rare ability to hold an audience's attention not just for a moment but across decades,” said Alison Maxwell, senior executive editor of AARP.org, in a statement. “For actors like Noah Wyle, Hugh Jackman, Pedro Pascal and Sterling K. Brown, their presence here is a testament to exactly that.”

Here's a glance at the top 10 off AARP's Movies for Grownups all-new Gen X list:

    1. Noah Wyle, 55
    2. Matt Damon, 55
    3. Pedro Pascal, 51
    4. Taye Diggs, 55
    5. Ryan Gosling, 45 (the youngest to make the list)
    6. Jon Hamm, 55
    7. Idris Elba, 53
    8. Jason Bateman, 57
    9. John Krasinski, 46
    10. Sterling K. Brown, 50

The Tour That Made Them Superstars Almost Tore Them Apart: 'We Were Lucky to Get Out Alive'

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:46pm

In 1977, Fleetwood Mac was riding higher than ever.

The band's landmark album Rumours had become a phenomenon, eventually spending 31 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 and selling millions of copies worldwide. But while the music was conquering the charts, the group's personal lives were unraveling behind the scenes.

A new retrospective from BBC Music Magazine looks back at Fleetwood Mac's legendary Rumours tour, which ran from February 1977 through August 1978 and transformed the band from rock stars into one of the biggest acts in the world. According to the report, it nearly destroyed them in the process.

Related: ‘Queen of Rock and Roll’ Just Named No. 1 Greatest Frontwoman in Rock History

The tensions that fueled Rumours were already well known. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had ended their romantic relationship, while Christine and John McVie had divorced during the making of the album. Yet the band continued performing songs inspired by those breakups night after night in front of thousands of fans.

BBC Music Magazine notes that songs like Buckingham's "Go Your Own Way" and Nicks' "Dreams" became even more emotionally charged on stage. Nicks later described them to Mojo magazine as "twin songs."

Related: Rock Icon Makes Major Donation to Honor Doctor Who Helped Protect Her Voice

"'Dreams' and 'Go Your Own Way' are what I call the 'twin songs.' They're the same song written by two different people about the same relationship," said Nicks.

The emotional stakes weren't lost on the band's bandmates. In the Mojo interview, drummer Mick Fleetwood reflected on Buckingham and Nicks turning their breakup into music, saying they were "writing those songs about and to each other, and then singing them on the same mike."

Fleetwood added, "I don't know how they did it." The tension was so intense that even Warner Bros. executives worried the group might not survive, repeatedly calling Fleetwood to ask, "Do we still have a band, Mick?" Mojo summed up the era as one defined by "betrayal, obsession and narcotic excess," while Fleetwood offered an even starker assessment: "We were lucky to get out alive."

Related: 1975 Fleetwood Mac Classic Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 51 Years Later

As the album's success exploded, so did the excess surrounding the band. Bassist John McVie later recalled that when the royalty checks finally started arriving, "we all went berserk and went out and bought Porsches and Rolls-Royces."

The stories became increasingly extravagant. Christine McVie admitted that grand pianos were sometimes craned into hotel rooms during the tour, while drummer Fleetwood joked about the expense of finding hotels willing to accommodate Nicks' decorating preferences.

Related: 1977 Fleetwood Mac Hit Named ‘Greatest Two-Chord Song of All Time’ Was a No. 1 Smash

But the most serious complication came when Nicks and Fleetwood began an affair, creating even more strain within an already fractured group.

Looking back years later, Nicks admitted the relationship was doomed from the start.

“Never in a million years could you have told me that would happen. That was the biggest surprise. But Mick is definitely one of my great, great loves,” Nicks told Uncut in a 2003 interview. “But that really wasn’t good for anybody. Everybody was angry, because Mick was married to a wonderful girl and had two wonderful children. I was horrified. I loved these people. I loved his family. So it couldn’t possibly work out. And it didn’t. It just couldn’t.”

Related: The Festival That Invented Woodstock Happened 59 Years Ago Today

Despite the chaos, Fleetwood Mac survived the Rumours era and continued together through Tusk, Mirage and Tango in the Night. Still, members of the band have acknowledged that the experience changed them forever.

Reflecting on that period, Fleetwood later told The Independent, "There’s a picture of the five of us back in the day taken by [rock photographer] Neil Preston, and I always look at it and we’re laughing away, and we didn’t have any idea what was going to happen. No one could have imagined the success and the hardship and the torment.”

Nearly 50 years later, the Rumours tour remains one of rock's greatest success stories, and one of its most unlikely survival tales.

'Elf' and 'Couples Retreat' Star Is Being Held in a Florida Jail with No Bond

    Fri, 06/19/2026 - 2:13pm

Faizon Love, the actor best known as the grumpy Gimbels' store manager from Elf, or the exhausted older partner of the fun-loving Trudy in Couples Retreat, has found himself in jail.

Love was arrested in Hillsborough County, Florida, on contempt-of-court charges. According to CBS 12 News, he was arrested on June 16 and booked into Tampa's Falkenburg Road jail without bond.

Inside the $250,000 Child Support Dispute

On June 19, he attended a two-hour court hearing regarding child support. After arriving in a wheelchair, WTSP reported that his attorney insisted on his release, telling the judge that keeping him locked up would hurt his reputation and make it even harder for him to make money.

Tiffany Lee, the mother of his child, says that he owes $250,000 in back child support payments. When he was asked whether he could pay $2,500 per month in child support, Love claimed he couldn't. The actor's lawyers said that he doesn't have a permanent home or savings account. They also said that he drives a 27-year-old vehicle and can't afford to pay most of his expenses without help.

A History of Legal Troubles and Assault Charges

Love has had several run-ins with law enforcement in the past several years. After getting busted on camera assaulting a valet at the John Glenn Columbus International Airport in 2017, he pleaded no contest. He paid a $500 fine and received a 180-day suspended jail sentence.

In 2009, Love was arrested for felony assault. According to TMZ, he was rejected at the door of LA's Standard Hotel nightclub. After arguing with a group of women, he punched the man who was standing by them.

In 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that he was being sued for assault and battery by Elizabeth Renderos. In her lawsuit, Renderos said that she was working the front desk at a Sheraton Hotel in San Diego when Love tried to check in. When she informed him that the hotel was fully booked, she alleged that he threw a credit card machine at her, hitting her in the head. The case is ongoing.
