This ‘Monumental Flop’ Was Named the ‘Worst Eagles Solo Album Ever’

Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:49pm

When members of The Eagles stepped out on their own, the results ranged from blockbuster success to forgotten misfires. But according to a new ranking, one solo release stands apart from the rest—earning the distinction of being labeled the worst Eagles solo album ever.

Ultimate Classic Rock recently ranked the best and worst solo albums released by every member of the Eagles, weighing artistic ambition, execution, and long-term impact. While several picks sparked debate, the bottom slot was unusually definitive.

That title went to Got Any Gum?, the 1987 solo album by Joe Walsh.

In its assessment, Ultimate Classic Rock wrote that the album “earns its spot as the worst Eagles solo album ever,” citing a combination of misjudged production choices, dated ’80s aesthetics, and material that failed to showcase Walsh’s strengths as a guitarist and songwriter.

Released in October 1987, Got Any Gum? arrived during a difficult transitional period for many classic rock artists. Walsh, who turned 40 that year, leaned heavily into then-current keyboard-driven sounds and compressed production, a sharp departure from the guitar-forward style that had defined his work with the Eagles, the James Gang, and earlier solo releases.

The album was both a critical and commercial disappointment. It peaked at No. 113 on the Billboard 200, making it Walsh’s lowest-charting solo album. The Los Angeles Times later summed up its reception bluntly, calling it a “monumental flop.”

There were flashes of promise. The lead single, “The Radio Song,” reached No. 8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, and Walsh explained at the time that the track was meant to demystify his songwriting process.

He told Rolling Stone in a 2016 feature, "I decided I would make a song that explains how I write music. Because I got tired of people asking me. And if you read the lyrics, it tells you exactly how I do it: 'I like to sit in a silent place when no one's around and listen inside it/Inside the silence is the melody/Voices singing harmony.' That's it."

"As far as the album title [1987 's Got Any Gum?], I was in New York City, and I was walking down the street. And this guy was coming toward me, and he was obviously homeless and looking for change and stuff. So I reached into my pocket and pulled out a handful of change, and when he got to me, I held it out and said, 'Here.' And he said, 'Nah, I don't want any money. You got any gum?' And I thought, 'This guy's a genius! That's brilliant!' It was like a Zen riddle and that was the answer," he added with a laugh.

Still, those moments weren’t enough to overcome what critics viewed as an unfocused album weighed down by period trends. In later retrospectives, Got Any Gum? has often been cited as the point where Walsh’s solo momentum stalled, years before the Eagles’ 1994 reunion helped reset his career and personal life.

By contrast, Ultimate Classic Rock’s ranking also highlighted how uneven solo careers were across the band. Albums labeled “worst” by other members still managed respectable chart runs or certifications, underscoring just how stark Walsh’s misstep appeared in comparison.

Decades later, Got Any Gum? remains a cautionary entry in the Eagles’ sprawling post-band catalog, remembered less for its ambition than for how far it strayed from the sound that made Walsh one of rock’s most distinctive players.

Taylor Swift Sends a Powerful Message to the Olympic Athletes: ‘I Am So Grateful’

Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:47pm

Taylor Swift is one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world right now—and she seems to be everywhere, from the radio to movie screens, dropping albums and music videos. With her career at an all-time high, the pop star hasn't skipped a beat when it comes to cheering on her athletic fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce.

That same spirit of support was on display during the opening ceremonies of the 2026 Winter Olympics, when Swift appeared in a pre-recorded video message honoring the athletes competing on the world stage. Speaking directly to Olympians, the singer thanked them for the dedication, discipline, and sacrifices required to reach the Games, calling their journeys “incredibly inspiring.”

Wearing a Ralph Lauren Team USA Polo Bear sweatshirt, Swift emphasized how meaningful it was to hear athletes’ stories and witness the years of work that often happen far from the spotlight. She also shared her gratitude for being able to watch and celebrate their achievements, saying, "I am very grateful for everything that you've done to get to this point in your life," continuing with, "and grateful that you've brought us all along with you." She concluded by wishing them luck, safety, and an unforgettable Olympic experience.

As Swift delivers her message, the uplifting backtrack of her song “Opalite” can be heard playing in the background. Fans were quick to react online, with some praising Swift for using her platform to highlight the athletes rather than herself. “She is everyone’s biggest cheerleader and it never fails to make me smile. 💗,” one viewer wrote. Another added, “Love to see champions supporting champions!”

Other viewers took to the comments to point out that Swift has yet to make a recent political statement, as many other celebrities have lately. "A statement about the Olympics but not ICE????" In Swift's defense, a fan wrote, "Everyone thinking that she needs to speak about the political state of our country is wrong. She is sending a message to the Olympic athletes is a positive!!! Why does everyone think we have to put more negativity into this world? And just because she’s Taylor Swift doesn’t mean she has to speak on any single subject."

The 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics officially began with the opening ceremonies on February 6, 2026, at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium. Olympic coverage is handled by NBC, and both live and on-demand events can be accessed on NBC's streaming platform, Peacock, from now through February 22, 2026.

Celine Dion Shares Hilarious Impression of Heavy Metal Band Amid Her Ongoing Health Battle

Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:44pm

Céline Dion is enjoying the little things amid her health issues.

The singer, 57, shared an Instagram video on Friday, February 6, where she revealed some of the top artists on her playlist.

“I’m often asked what I’m listening to, so here are a few songs from my playlist lately,” she wrote in her caption. “Different moods, different moments … but all ones I love. Tell me, what’s on YOUR playlist?”

In the accompanying video, Dion told her social media followers that she was sharing “just a little bit” of her playlist “because there’s too many artists and too many songs that I love so much.”

At one point in the clip, Dion explained how her son Eddy influenced her music of choice. (She shared her three sons—René-Charles, 25, and twins Eddy and Nelson, 15—with her late husband, René Angélil, who died in January 2016 at age 73 after a battle with throat cancer.)

“Eddy, one of my twins, his favorite band is Metallica. I want to sing a Metallica song now,” she said before launching into an impression of the band. In reality, she screamed “very heavy metal lyrics” that amounted to gibberish.

Elsewhere in her video, Dion praised Rihanna’s 2016 hit “Love on the Brain.”

“First of all, that song should’ve been mine. I’m just saying,” she quipped. “She did a great job. I love her, Rihanna, so much, but it should have been mine.”

Dion also requested that two of her favorite artists write songs for her: Guy Sebastian and James Blunt.

“I love so much Guy Sebastian. Guy Sebastian, do you write songs for other people?” she asked, pointing to his 2020 song “Before I Go” as a go-to on her playlist.

While jamming out to Blunt’s 2004 hit “You’re Beautiful,” she added, “I can’t talk too much about James Blunt because I’m gonna start crying. Can you write a song for me too? Please.”

Other songs on Dion’s playlist included Lauren Daigle’s “You Say” and Celeste’s “Stop This Flame.”

Dion’s peek into her music preferences comes amid her ongoing battle with stiff person syndrome, which she publicly revealed in December 2022. The rare autoimmune neurological disorder causes muscle stiffness in the middle part of the body, per Cleveland Clinic. The condition can lead to stiffness and spasms in the legs and other muscles as well as difficulty walking.

“I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better and my precious children, who are supporting me and giving me hope,” she said in an Instagram video at the time. “I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again, but I have to admit it’s been a struggle.”

In July 2024, Dion returned to the stage when she performed Edith Piaf’s “Hymne á l’amour” at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

This 13-Piece Home Security System at Costco Is 'Super Simple to Set Up,' Shoppers Say

Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:25pm

Recent headlines have put home safety top of mind for many Americans. Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today show following what her family has described as a terrifying situation involving her mother. While details are still unfolding, the news has sparked fresh conversations about how vulnerable homes can feel, especially for older family members and anyone living alone. It's a sobering reminder that peace of mind at home isn't something people take for granted anymore.

That anxiety is part of why more shoppers are paying attention to easy, flexible security setups that don't require professional installation or long contracts. One option getting a lot of buzz right now is the SimpliSafe Security System with 2 Outdoor Camera Series 2, 13-piece bundle at Costco, which shoppers say feels approachable even for people who aren't especially tech-savvy. The system is currently priced at $349.99 online and includes three free months of 24/7 professional monitoring, though monitoring is optional if you prefer a DIY approach.

What stands out most in customer reviews is how quickly everything can be installed. The wireless system includes a base station, keypad, entry sensors for doors and windows, pet-friendly motion sensors up to 60 pounds, a glassbreak sensor, a key fob, and two outdoor cameras. Shoppers repeatedly describe the setup process as incredibly simple, with one reviewer noting that the camera clarity is excellent and the value is hard to beat compared to buying directly from the brand.

The outdoor cameras offer 1080p HD video, color night vision, a wide 140-degree field of view, two-way audio and built-in spotlights. When wired, they can also enable AI-powered monitoring, allowing live agents to see and speak through the camera to help deter potential intruders. Even without wiring, the cameras run on rechargeable batteries, and solar panels can be added for extra convenience.

For many buyers, the appeal is flexibility. The system works through the SimpliSafe app, allowing you to arm, disarm, and monitor your home from anywhere. There's a built-in battery backup and both cellular and Wi-Fi connections, which can help keep the system running during power outages.

In light of recent news stories involving home safety and vulnerable loved ones, it's easy to see why shoppers are gravitating toward systems that feel straightforward and reliable. While no security setup can prevent every scenario, many Costco members say this one offers a strong sense of control and reassurance at a time when those qualities feel especially valuable.

15 Photos of McDonald's in the 1990s That Unlock a Core Memory

Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:05pm

There’s a certain magic that McDonald’s in the 1990s had that just isn’t there anymore. Maybe it’s because we’ve gotten older, or maybe the times have changed. But there was a feeling back then that almost felt like going to Disneyland—just with better food.

And sure, it wasn’t healthy. It never was. But that didn’t matter. What mattered were the good times we had in the PlayPlace and collecting all the cool Happy Meal toys. If you were a kid in the ’90s, or just remember that era fondly, these photos are about as close to a time machine as you’re going to get.

😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter🍳🍔

1. McDonald's Iconic Roof

Today’s McDonald’s locations feel like a washed-out version of the cheerful storefronts from back then. The iconic mansard roof was a clever way to hide rooftop equipment, but it also gave the restaurants a classic look compared to today’s boxy designs.

      2. Birthday Parties View this post on Instagram

McDonald’s was the place to be if you were celebrating another year around the sun. You’d get fun hats, a cake, some decorations, and a helpful host keeping everything moving. After eating, you and your friends would sprint straight to the PlayPlace. Those were simpler times.

      3. Batman Returns Toys

If you liked Batman, these were must-haves. Released to promote Batman Returns, the toy line was eventually pulled after backlash over McDonald’s promoting such a dark movie to kids. It was a good run while it lasted.

      4. PlayPlace

The PlayPlace looked massive. The bright colors and structures were a visual feast. You’d rush through tubes and slides like you were on a different planet where having fun was mandatory. Untouched ’90s PlayPlaces are rare now, but it’s tempting to relive the good old days—if you could still fit.

      5. Ronald McDonald Bench

The iconic Ronald McDonald bench was a fixture, adding a pop of color and making it feel like you were actually hanging out with him. You’d grab a quick photo with friends or sit down to take your shoes off before heading into the ball pit.

      6. Character Chairs

Chairs weren’t boring, uniform, utilitarian pieces like they are now. Instead, they came in the shape of your favorite McDonald’s characters, like Grimace and the Fry Guys. They added an extra touch of whimsy and color that made the space feel welcoming to kids.

      7. Halloween Buckets Whale spotted in central London
      by u/zark in reddit.com

McDonald’s Halloween buckets were an iconic part of the late ’80s and ’90s. Sure, the new ones released in 2025 brought those memories back, but the originals had a quality and charm that can’t really be recreated. Halloween candy just tasted better out of these.

      8. High Chairs

If your little brother or sister needed a boost, these high chairs were easy to roll over to your table and featured a fun Ronald McDonald graphic on the back. It was another small detail that showed how much thought went into making the space fun.

      9. Extra Value Meals

The ’90s started strong with McDonald’s Extra Value Meals, which made it cheap to satisfy your hunger. You could pick an entrée like a Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, or McChicken, plus fries and a drink. While not as cheap anymore, the deal has made a few comebacks.

      10. Teenie Beanie Babies

It’s hard to think of a frenzy quite like Beanie Babies. In the late ’90s, McDonald’s offered tiny versions as Happy Meal toys. People waited in long drive-thru lines and ordered more food than they wanted just to get the one they were after. If you scored it, it was the best day ever.

      11. Arch Deluxe

This was McDonald’s attempt at a grown-up burger that didn’t come in a Happy Meal box. It featured a Quarter Pounder beef patty, potato flour bun, bacon, Spanish onions, and a Dijonnaise-style sauce. Hundreds of millions of dollars were lost on this experiment, but some still miss it.

      12. Styrofoam Clamshell Containers

1990 was the last year McDonald’s used Styrofoam containers, and some people swear the food tasted better in them. Now it’s all paper and cardboard. You’ll never hear that squeaky sound again when popping one open.

      13. McDonald's Pizza

In an effort to compete with pizza chains, McDonald’s added pizza at select locations. You could order a personal or family-size pie as long as you didn’t mind the longer wait. Today, the only place to find it is at the Epic McD complex in Orlando, Florida.

      14. Super Size Menu Option

If you were extra hungry, Super Size was enough to satisfy you and then some. That extra handful of fries or sips of Coke summed up ’90s indulgence. It was eventually discontinued after Super Size Me put a spotlight on its unhealthy side.

      15. Nintendo 64 Game Kiosks Inside McDonald's View this post on Instagram

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, some McDonald’s locations had Nintendo 64 kiosks. You can imagine how greasy the controllers were, but nobody cared. You played to your heart's content and loved every minute of it.

'Single's Inferno' Fan Notices Unsaid Go Eun and Sung Min Connection

      Fri, 02/06/2026 - 7:02pm

Season 5 of Single's Inferno is almost over, and so many dynamics changed by episode 10. Kim Go Eun was the most popular single on the Netflix show. Her first date in paradise was with Woo Sung Min, and he's been competing for her affection ever since. Fans noticed Kim, 26, kept her connection with Woo, 30, strong after their date.

      Spoiler alert for episode 10!

Go Eun Keeps Wearing Sung Min's Clothes View this post on Instagram

Park Hee Sun showed interest in her and was her partner for the model photoshoot. Shin Heyon Woo finally took her to paradise in episode 7. He wouldn't stop complimenting her looks, and she called him weird for that. Woo made sure to talk to her every time she returned for paradise, but that wasn't the only way they stayed close. A Reddit fan posted a video of Kim wearing Woo's clothes multiple times. This could be a great predictor of her final choice.

Another man is competing for her time. Game changer Jo I-Geon made his interest in her clear. Jo, 33, tried to interrupt her conversations with Woo, and sometimes failed. However, he won the chance to take her to paradise in episode 10. Things started to heat up a bit more when they got into the pool.

Jo tried to teach her how to swim. They were playful and laughing. He made things more serious by asking when she wanted to get married. The actor joked he wouldn't be able to get rich in two or three years to afford it. They also talked about how they handle conflict in a relationship.

Season 5's finale will be released on February 10 on Netflix. Kim will likely choose Woo based on their history and her wearing his clothing. But the man who is giving him good competition is Jo.

2010s Rocker Fired by New Band Ahead of Debut Album

      Fri, 02/06/2026 - 6:58pm

The rock community received some shocking news on Friday.

A month before The S.E.T. was about to release their debut EP, Self Evident Truth, it was announced on Instagram that their guitarist, Brady Ebert, had been fired from the rock band. The group put out a statement on Friday afternoon, revealing that they are parting ways with the former Turnstile guitarist.

"Brady is no longer a member of THE S.E.T," they wrote. "We will not stand by his ridiculous comments and behavior toward the members of our band and our community. We will continue to put on for Baltimore hardcore and thank everyone for their support."

      View this post on Instagram

Ebert has drawn attention over the last week due to his comments about his former bandmates, claiming that Turnstile does not care "about ethics or social issues in general" and that "they’re just pandering to their audience." He made these comments in a repost of a Turnstile Instagram story that featured an "abolish ICE" sign. Ebert also claimed that his former bandmate, Brendan Yates, stole $4000 from funds they made at a charity show, claiming that he needed to pay a merch bill.

The guitarist was a founding member of Turnstile in 2010, along with Yates, Daniel Fang, Sean "Coo" Cullen and "Freaky" Franz Lyons. It was announced in August 2022 that Ebert was leaving the band, citing no specific reason, but it was later revealed that there was a lot of tension between him and Fang. Turnstile recently won Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards last Sunday for their 2025 album, NEVER ENOUGH.

Three years later, Ebert formed The S.E.T., which stands for Self Evident Truth, and performed live for the first time at Zen West in Baltimore. The alternative-indie group released their first song, "T.M.T.," on January 21, ahead of their self-titled debut EP.

As of now, the group has not announced a replacement for the founding member. Self Evident Truth will be out on all streaming platforms on March 6.

The Indian Way To Make Your Dinner 10x Better

      Fri, 02/06/2026 - 6:31pm

For Jyoti Mukharji, cooking didn't come naturally. In her early days in the kitchen as a medical school grad, she recalls making watery daals and hard rotis that cracked in your mouth like a chip. But with time, cooking became a language she knew fluently. It connected her to her home in India and helped her connect with the community she built for herself in the United States. After deciding to quit her career in medicine to become a full-time mother, she poured her energy into the kitchen and leaned into sharing her knowledge of and love for cooking.

More than 15 years ago, Jyoti began teaching cooking classes in her Kansas City home, welcoming students of all ages. More than 6,500 students later, those lessons inspired Heartland Masala, a cookbook that goes beyond recipes, offering precise cooking advice, step-by-step guidance, a spice glossary, tips for using Indian flavors in unexpected ways and so much more.

Her son Auyon, a musician, writer and culinary historian, helped bring the project to life by writing through her voice based on meticulous documentation over the course of eight years. Together, they've created a cookbook that is both practical and deeply personal, reflecting years of teaching, learning and sharing. Through Heartland Masala, she and Auyon invite home cooks to explore Indian cuisine as an adaptable expression of identity.

To share a bit of the duo's passion and knowledge with you, we chatted with Jyoti and Auyon to dig into the book a bit more. They shared some great tips, tricks and advice for making Indian food at home, including one genius technique you need to try in your kitchen ASAP: tadka.

      What Is Tadka?

Reprinted with permission from Heartland Masala by Jyoti Mukharji and Auyon Mukharji, The Collective Book Studio, September 2025.

What if we told you that if you have some oil, some spices and a skillet that you could elevate your dinner in just one minute? It’s a method called tadka in Hindi or woggarne in Kannada, and known as tempering in English.

“Tadka is a cooking technique where spices are bloomed in hot fat and added to a dish at the beginning or at the end of a cooking process,” Jyoti tells Parade. (Both the cooking method and the resulting spiced fat are both called tadka.)

Because the flavor of spices can be best extracted in fat, tadka is a great method for quickly upgrading a variety of dishes. “Not only does tadka elevate the flavor of a dish, but it also makes it look aesthetically pleasing with the sizzling, colorful spices in fat,” explains Auyon. Tadka is often added on top of dal, a type of lentil soup, but that's just the beginning.

India is a very diverse country of 29 states, with each state and its regions representing a different version of culture and cuisine. Because of that, tadka has many regional variations, with the type of fat and combination of spices changing by location and cook. While cuisine differs even from city to city, there are some basic differences in how tadka is made across the country.

Jyoti shared that in the North of India, tadka is often a combination of ghee (clarified butter), cumin and asafetida, while in the South, ghee, black mustard seeds, curry leaves and dried red chilis are used. Regions like Gujarat in the West use ghee or peanut oil, cumin, black mustard seeds and asafetida, while cooks in Bengal in the East use mustard oil and panch phoron, a mixture of five whole spices.

      How To Make Tadka

If you want to give tadka a try at your house, you can start with a simple cumin version. All you need is cumin seed and some ghee. You can find ghee in many supermarkets and at Indian markets. The clarified butter won't burn like butter can, which makes it good for making tadka.

To make the tadka, heat a tablespoon of ghee in a small pan over medium heat. When the ghee is hot, sprinkle in about 3/4 teaspoon of cumin seeds and give the pan a shake or two. Cook until the cumin seeds are fragrant and darken by a shade or two. This should take about 20 seconds, but use your eyes, ears and nose to see if you need to cook it a bit longer or pull it off the heat sooner. If the mixture burns, just pour it out, wipe out the pan and try again. When the tadka is done, drizzle it over your dish.

      How To Use Tadka

Drizzle the tadka over lentil dishes, chickpea stews, raita or go in a non-Indian direction. The spiced ghee makes a tasty base for a warm vinaigrette, a flavorful garnish for soups (try it on butternut squash soup) and a delicious drizzle for roasted vegetables. In the book, Jyoti and Auyon also mention that tadka is tossed with buttered popcorn or drizzled over nachos.

3 More Tips for Making Great Indian Food at Home

Jyoti and Auyon share additional go-to kitchen tricks to elevate your meals:

      1. Freshly grind your spices

“Toasting and grinding whole spices freshly can make a world of a difference, considering that the potency of preground spices rapidly declines over time,” says Jyoti. She also recommends laying out all the spices and ingredients on the counter before beginning a recipe to make the cooking process quick. Investing in a simple spice grinder helps make this process quick and easy. Pro tip: Don't use the same grinder for spices and coffee, unless you want your morning brew to taste like last night's dinner.

      2. Take your time (and take it easy on yourself)

Auyon shares that it’s important to read a recipe thoroughly before beginning the cooking process and reading through the historical context and small notes provided by the author. If there are any unfamiliar ingredients, reading about them beforehand can make them feel less intimidating. He also advises readers to be easy on themselves, especially if this is the first time they're cooking an Indian recipe. If you're new to cooking the cuisine, start with a simple recipe with a shorter ingredient list.

      3. Get ahead

Sauce-based Indian recipes always taste better the next day because the flavors have time to meld and mingle. Making these components of the dish in advance is a great way to to meal prep. Having a big batch of sauces in the fridge or freezer is a huge time saver come dinner time. All you have to do is heat them up, add your beans or proteins and dinner's done!

Crofton Mini Ceramic Grill Pan, $5.99 at Aldi Crofton Mini Ceramic Grill Pan, Teal

      Aldi

Hitting shelves on Wednesday, February 11, Crofton’s Mini Ceramic Grill Pan comes from a long line of ceramic nonstick cookware known for being a reliable, budget-friendly alternative to higher-priced designer brands. The mini series of pots and pans from Crofton generally features a roughly 6-inch diameter/cooking surface, making them perfect for small portions and solo meals, whether enjoyed at home over the stove or out in the elements over a campfire.

In respect to the Mini Ceramic Grill Pan, this solo champion brings the novelty of an outdoor grill indoors, perfect for searing meats and veggies without the hassle of firing up a full-sized grill or braving the elements. It’s constructed with a ceramic nonstick coating for superior release and easy cleanup, sports a heat-resistant comfort-grip handle, and is made from 90 percent recycled aluminum.

      Benefits of Ceramic Nonstick

Suitable for all cooktops, including induction, this handy grill pan isn’t just convenient, it’s super versatile too. Thanks to its nonstick coating, food releases easily, making everything from meal prep to cleanup a breeze. It also means you can cook with less oil for even healthier meals. The only caveat: stick to silicone or wooden utensils when cooking to protect the surface. Scratches can compromise the nonstick coating, leading to unwanted chemical release, so a little care goes a long way.

The good news is, because of its compatibility with all cooktops, it's a reliable option for almost any grilling situation. Beyond searing meats and veggies, it’s perfect for grilled sandwiches, burgers, toasting tortillas, crisping small batches of sliced potatoes or simply warming up leftover takeout from the night before.

You can expect to find both Teal and Grey colors in stock upon arrival on February 11, but you’ll want to act fast if you intend on snagging one for yourself. Crofton cookware is a hot commodity and this mini grill pan is sure to be no exception, so expect to be bumping elbows with shoppers looking to upgrade a collection of their own.

While you’re there, look out for Aldi’s mini ceramic frying pan to further round out the collection or this 12-drawer rolling cart to unlock extra kitchen storage.

'70s Rock Band Announces Death of Legendary New York Bassist

      Fri, 02/06/2026 - 6:25pm

The music community received some awful news on Friday.

Jimmy Rip, a former guitarist for the popular 1970s rock band Television, announced on Instagram that his friend and bassist Fred Smith passed away on Thursday. He was 77 years old.

"The legendary bassist for Television, Tom Verlaine and many others, Fred Smith was not only my bandmate for 46 years — he was my true friend. He was a great running buddy and exactly the guy you wanted around when road life got wearisome. His sense of humor, much like his musical voice, was dry, subtle, to the point, hilarious and always left you wanting more," Rip wrote at the beginning of his caption. "Yesterday, he left this world, leaving so many who loved him wanting so much more…of him."

      View this post on Instagram

Rip revealed he met the late musician in 1980 while they were playing in The Eve Moon Band along with Jay Dee Daughtery. Smith played the bass for Television from 1975 until the band broke up for good in 2023. Meanwhile, Rip joined Television in 2007, replacing guitarist Richard Lloyd, who left the group amicably. In addition, he had known frontrunner Tom Verlaine since the early 1980s and was invited to fill the role after filling in during a show in New York City's Central Park.

Founded in New York City by Verlaine in the 1970s, Television quickly became one of the most influential bands in the New York rock scene. They released their debut studio album in 1977, titled Marquee Moon, which received positive reviews from fans and critics. They followed it up with Adventure a year later, before breaking up for 13 years.

In 1992, Television came back and released their self-titled studio album, and began performing sporadically until 2023, when Verlaine passed away that January. According to journalist David Fricke's Mojo 4 Music, the group was working on a fourth album, but a lot of it was unfinished.

Smith replaced Richard Hell, who had left Television in 1975 over disputes with Verlaine, and stayed with the band for almost 50 years. He started his career as the bassist for another band called Blondie, which also played at CBGB, a popular music hall in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, which is how he met the band members of Television. In addition to his music career, he and his wife, Paula Cereghino, started making wine in their apartment and opened Cereghino Smith in 2007.

According to Rip, Smith was battling illness for many years, and he was able to say his goodbyes before he passed. He also revealed that Television had plans to play Verlaine's music live this year.

"Thankfully, we were able to say goodbye, 'love you' were our last words to each other," Rip wrote at the end of his caption. "I will miss him more than anyone can imagine."

Ex-'SNL' Star Says Watching the Show After Leaving 'Feels Very Strange'

      Fri, 02/06/2026 - 6:15pm

Bowen Yang has been tuning into Saturday Night Live following his surprise exit from the sketch comedy show in December 2025.

While speaking to People magazine in February 2026, Yang said that he "was watching" the first episode of season 51's second half, which aired on January 17.

"I was getting texts from old coworkers, just saying hi and that the train was still running and a mutual missing of each other," said Yang, who wrote forSNL for a year before starring on the series.

The Las Culturistas podcast co-host then explained that watching SNL following his exit “feels very strange” because he no longer has a sense of heaviness about the show's sketches.

“To not know what the process is from soup to nuts with the whole week is alleviating. The emotional baggage of it has been lifted for me. So just watching the sketches every week these past three shows have been great,” said the Wicked star while speaking to People.

In addition, he said this new chapter away from SNL has been "bizarre, but ultimately fun."

"I don't want to believe that it's totally bizarre to me, but it's obviously an adjustment,” said Yang during the interview.

He also said that he does occasionally feel pangs of wanting to be back on the sketch comedy show.

“Now I'm getting [feelings] like, ‘Oh, it would've been fun to do a sketch with Teyana Taylor or Alexander Skarsgård,” said Yang.

Bowen Yang Addressed His Departure From 'SNL' on Instagram

Yang addressed his departure from SNL in a December 20 Instagram upload. In the caption of the post, Yang said he enjoyed "working at SNL" for seven years and "loved" his castmates.

"i was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile," wrote Yang in the caption. "i’m grateful for every minute of my time there. i learned about myself (bad with wigs). i learned about others (generous, vulnerable, hot). i learned that human error can be nothing but correct. i learned that comedy is mostly logistics and that it will usually fail until it doesn’t, which is the besssst."

In addition, Yang expressed gratitude for his friends, co-workers, fans, and the different SNL hosts he's worked with over his seven seasons on the show. In addition, he thanked the show's creator and executive producer, Lorne Michaels.

"thank you to lorne for the job. for the standard. and for bringing everyone at work together. they all care deeply about people in the room, any room, enjoying themselves. i can’t believe i was ever included in that," stated Yang in his Instagram post.

Bowen Yang Said 'SNL' Helped Balance Fame

In a December 2025 interview with Esquire, Yang shared that he believed starring on SNL helped him balance out fame. He explained that he believes "fame makes you a little bit too passive in life."

"I think you expect things to come to you. I think you expect things to happen and to work at a place like SNL is, I think the perfect counterweight to that because you have to be a self-starter," said Yang during his Esquire interview.

“Above all, I’m a proud husband and father of three,” he added, sharing his pride for his wife and the couple’s three children, sons Barrett Hardy-Clay and Abram Howell, and daughter Braylen Hendrix

Noting concerns that his participation in the upcoming event may be viewed as divisive, Gilbert promised that he believes in a country that comes together as one. He also shared his enthusiasm for getting the opportunity to perform during the Super Bowl, which he noted has never been given to a country artist for over two decades.

“We’re celebrating 250 years as a country, and it’s been more than 20 years since a country artist has been asked to play the Super Bowl halftime show,” he said. “I respect that some people may see this differently, but I’m not playing this show to be divisive. I was offered this opportunity and imagined my kids watching their daddy perform at halftime during the biggest game in American Football. Everything I do, I do it for them.”

He Is Asking for Folks to Come Together

In closing, Gilbert called for unity and shared his gratitude toward those who have supported him throughout his career.

“The way I treat people isn’t conditional based on what our differences may be. I believe ‘United We Stand,’ divided we fall, and my prayer for our country is that we stand united,” he wrote. “Thank you to my road family and all the fans who have stood behind me. Looking forward to hitting the stage this Sunday and giving folks a hell of a show.”

Gilbert isn’t the only artist to stand firmly behind his decision to perform for the upcoming alternative halftime show. Lee Brice also explained his reason for joining the group of headliners, which also includes Gabby Barrett and Kid Rock. Turning Point USA’s All-American Super Bowl Half-Time Show will be available on various cable channels and the brand’s YouTube page on the same day as Super Bowl LX, which takes place on Feb. 8.
