1975 Hit Named Greatest Song From Top-5 ‘Best Rock Band’ of All Time

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 11:01pm

Picking a favorite Pink Floyd song is like trying to find light on the dark side of the moon. It's impossible.

Lucky for us, Uncut, a monthly music magazine based in London, took on the task, and earlier this month, they let fans online know their definitive choice.

For the feature, the publication recruited the band’s lead guitarist, David Gilmour; original founding member and drummer, Nick Mason; and a group of “famous fans” including Ice Cube, Robert Wyatt, and Paul Weller.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

From a catalog encompassing hundreds of tracks, the outlet narrowed down their best-of Pink Floyd list to 30songs, and at the top? “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.”

A nine-part composition from the band’s 1975 album, Wish You Were Here, the song is 13 minutes cut down from 26 of hypnotic and dreamlike progressive rock that drifts, builds, then explodes. Lyrics from Roger Waters and Gilmour don’t start until about eight and a half minutes in.

“Pink Floyd were world-famous, rich beyond their dreams, and under pressure. Waters revisited the theme of mental illness (which had been central to Dark Side…), but this time rooted it in the real-life disintegration of Syd Barrett,” the outlet shares. “Unfolding over 13 carefully measured minutes, the song’s mood is one of equipoise before the onslaught -- and while Waters rarely allowed sentimentality to creep into the Floyd, it’s clearly appropriate on ‘Shine On…,’ and is judged perfectly.”

A Tribute to Syd Barrett

Written by Gilmour, Waters, and keyboardist Richard Wright, the song is a tribute to founding member and former frontman Syd Barrett, whose tragic departure from the band in 1968 was due to deteriorating mental health. Barrett died years later, in July 2006, at age 60 following complications related to pancreatic cancer, The New York Times reported.

Gilmour agrees with the top song choice, saying, “It’s great that this is No. 1, as it’s the purest Floyd song, the peak of that particular stage in our development." He added, “Roger would always disappear for a few days to write lyrics and he came up with this tribute to Syd. They’re beautiful words and it’s a heartfelt tribute that speaks for us all.”

The complete version of the song is about 26 minutes long, and was split in two so it would fit on one side of their LP. And it was a hit, topping the Billboard 200 in October 1975.

Best Rock Bands of All Time

“The composition’s majesty shimmers with every synth twinkle and guitar echo, and the alternately despairing and chuckling lyrics ('You reached for the secret too soon / You cried for the moon') seem to conjure Barrett’s madcap spirit, even as the production displays a fundamental pristineness his chaos would never have allowed,” Billboard writes about the masterwork.

Billboard also ranked Pink Floyd in the top five of their “50 Best Rock Bands” roundup, citing their 15 studio albums released between 1967 and 2014, namely Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Pink Floyd were beaten only by Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles.

Hollywood Powerhouse With 8 Oscar Nods Turns 79

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 11:00pm

Beloved stage and screen icon Glenn Close is celebrating her 79th birthday on March 19, 2026.

Best known for her unforgettable performances in films like Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons, Close has built a career defined by intensity, precision and emotional depth. Her portrayal of Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction remains one of the most iconic—and chilling—performances in movie history, earning her one of her eight Academy Award nominations.

Before becoming a Hollywood mainstay, Close got her start on stage, earning critical acclaim on Broadway. She won Tony Awards for performances in productions like Sunset Boulevard and The Real Thing, establishing herself early on as a powerhouse performer with remarkable range.

In the years that followed, Close seamlessly moved between film and television, taking on roles that showcased her versatility. From playing Cruella de Vil in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians to starring in the hit legal drama Damages, she proved her ability to command both the big and small screen. Her work on Damages earned her multiple Emmy Awards and introduced her to a new generation of viewers.

Close’s filmography is filled with critically acclaimed performances, including roles in The Big Chill, The Wife and Albert Nobbs, the latter of which she also co-produced. Despite holding the record for one of the most Oscar-nominated actresses without a win, her influence on the industry is undeniable.

Beyond acting, Close has been a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, co-founding the organization Bring Change to Mind to help end stigma and support open conversations around mental illness.

As she turns 79, Close’s legacy continues to grow as one of Hollywood’s most respected performers, but as a voice for meaningful causes beyond the screen.

Legendary '60s Star, With Classic No. 1 Hit Song, Turns 93

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 10:59pm

The sound of the '60s would not have been the same without the quiet yet powerful innovation of Bones Howe.

The legendary producer, best known for the No. 1 hit "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In," is celebrating his 93rd birthday.

Born on March 18, 1933, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dayton Burr "Bones" Howe is one of the most influential figures in the music scene of the 1960s and beyond. While he may not be a household name to casual listeners, his work has become widely beloved and helped define the sound of an era.

Howe first found success as a recording engineer, working with major artists including Elvis Presley and The Mamas & the Papas. His natural talent and technological skill quickly set him apart in a rapidly evolving music industry.

His biggest breakthrough came with The 5th Dimension, with whom he produced a series of hits. Most notably, he helped create "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In," the iconic upbeat song from the musical Hair, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. The track's high-quality production and rich harmonies made it one of the 1960s' most memorable hits.

That same success also earned Howe a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1970, highlighting the caliber of his work during one of the most competitive times in music history.

Throughout his career, Howe developed a reputation for his unique production style, shaped by creativity and experience. His work helped bridge the gap between raw in-studio performances and the more refined music that was popular at the time.

His accomplishments extended far beyond chart-topping success, as he went on to influence how countless records were made. At a time when studio technology was rapidly advancing, Howe embraced new techniques that greatly elevated the quality of music recordings.

Even decades later, his contributions remain embedded in some of the most recognizable songs of the era. In an interview with Tape Op, Howe reflected on his success, stating, "It's very gratifying to know that I made entertainment nearly forty years ago that people are still listening to today."

While many stars stood in front of the microphone, Howe was one of the key figures working behind it, helping bring those timeless hits to life.

As he celebrates his 93rd birthday, his legacy continues to stand as a testament to the power of production throughout music history.

One of the 'Best Country Love Song Duets' Gets Reimagined as 'Incredibly Sad' Version by Kelly Clarkson

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 10:45pm

Kelly Clarkson is putting a new spin on her iconic 2010 duet with Jason Aldean.

Over 15 years after recording "Don't You Wanna Stay" with the country crooner, Clarkson performed the beloved track solo at one of her recent concerts, turning it into a heartbreaking new stripped-down version.

🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

While performing at Rodeo Houston over the weekend, Clarkson, 43, introduced the song by telling the crowd, "This is the solo, incredibly sad version of 'Don't You Wanna Stay.'"

"Apparently, they didn’t [wanna stay], ‘cause it’s just me!" she further quipped.

The powerhouse singer—who filed for divorce from her former husband, the late Brandon Blackstock, in 2020—then quipped, "Apparently, they didn’t [wanna stay], 'cause it’s just me!"

She then began performing a somber version of the country love song, making some fans think they might like her "sad" take on the song better than the original.

"Better than the duet," one user commented under a TikTok video of the performance. Another asked, "Anyone else prefer the 'Just Kelly' version?"

"Her voice is like silk," someone else chimed in, while more fans begged Clarkson to release a studio recording of the track by herself.

But "Don't You Wanna Stay" already reached massive success as a duet.

First released on Aldean's 2010 album My Kinda Party before coming out as a single, the powerful track hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart in March 2011, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.

It spent a total of 23 weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart, plus 71 weeks on the Country Digital Sales chart, three of which were spent at No. 1. "Don't You Wanna Stay" was also given the No. 9 spot on Billboard's list of the 25 Best Country Love Song Duets Of All Time in 2022.

Why Sarah Chalke Says Filming the ‘Scrubs’ Reboot Felt ‘Surreal’

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 10:25pm

Actress Sarah Chalke played Dr. Elliot Reid in the ABC medical sitcomScrubsthroughout the show's nine-season run, which ended in 2010. Chalke reprised the role of the quirky doctor for the Scrubs reboot series, which premiered in March 2026 on ABC.

Chalke shared details about returning to play Elliot during a March 2026 interview on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast,Inside of You. She said shooting the Scrubs reboot was a surreal experience.

"It was, you know, actually quite surreal stepping onto the set," said Chalke.

She explained that the new series was filmed in Vancouver, Canada, whereas the original show was shot in Los Angeles, specifically inside an abandoned hospital. She said that the Sacred Heart Hospital set was replicated for the reboot.

"First of all, stepping onto a set where you spent your entire 20s and then you're stepping on 25 years later, I can't quite explain what that felt like, especially since we shot in this abandoned hospital, you know, in the Valley and that got torn down," said Chalke during the podcast episode. "And now they've rebuilt the sets and we knew that was happening, but we kind of thought, 'Oh, it'll be kind of pretty accurate. Like maybe they'll be like 60 or 70 percent like the sets were.' And they were exactly the same. Like to a tee everything was identical."

She described seeing the new set "as such a weird experience" because it brought "waves of memories" from when she shot the original show.

"It felt like this weird kind of like time warp because it's the same character, the same people on the exact same set and the writing and I had kind of thought it's going to take a minute to step back into it. And what was weird was actually how natural it felt," explained Chalke while recording the Inside of You episode.

She explained that the part of Elliot feels ingrained in her, meaning it took no time to get back into character.

"It's part of your cells. It's part of your bones," said the Roseanne actress.

Tennis Superstar’s Bold Outfit Is Turning Heads: ‘Full Movie Villain Vibes’

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 10:07pm

Aryna Sabalenka’s iconic status is not limited to the court, but it also shines as brightly in her off-court style.

Slaying the fashion department with her confidence and unique personal style, the tennis superstar once again stole the spotlight as she arrived in Florida for the Miami Open.

In an Instagram update, she shared a glimpse of her life, but the 27-year-old did it in style.

In a series of posts, the Belarusian player stunned with an outfit that contrasted sharply with her signature on-court attire.

Sabalenka swapped her bright tennis dresses and athletic shoes for a head-to-toe Gucci ensemble, featuring a silver glitter dress, but the main attraction was her tiger-print shearling coat, which reportedly costs a staggering $48,000, as mentioned by The Zoe Report.

Aryna Sabalenka reacts to defeating Naomi Osaka of Japan in the fourth round on Day 7 of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden on March 10, 2026 in Indian Wells, California.

Adding more flair to her Hollywood-like outfit, she styled it with a gold chain belt, black purse, mesh stockings, pointed-toe stilettos and stacks of gold accessories.

“The only right outfit for my first night back in Miami…” she captioned her post.

The comment section was filled with fans swooning over her bold fashion choices.

View this post on Instagram

“Such an amazing look on you,” one wrote.

“The real superstar fashion model who happens to hit a nice ball,” a commenter added.

A third commenter delivered a two-word reaction saying “THE HOTTEST.”

Tennis Channel also chimed in and admired Sabalenka’s outfit, noting “The tigress herself.”

The same goes for another who called her “Tiger queen!!!”

Beyond this, fans noticed a similarity between the four-time Grand Slam winner and a Disney Villain.

“Full movie villain vibes,” a follower said while another commenter named the character, noting, “This is sending me Cruella de Vil.”

“The coat is very Cruella de Vil,” a fan echoed.

The WTA No. 1 is defending her title as Miami Open champion 2025 as she is expected to go against either the U.S.A.’s Ann Li or Australia’s Kimberly Birrell on March 20.

Beyond her dominance on the court, Sabalenka is also booked and busy with her off-court activities.

At the height of the Australian Open last January, she was introduced as Gucci’s newest brand ambassador along with fellow tennis star Jannik Sinner.

The duo officially joins Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae, Jin of BTS, Miley Cyrus and more.

Outside her sports career, Sabalenka's relationship is on the rise following her engagement to Brazilian businessman Georgios Frangulis.

1976 Ultra Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 50 Years Ago Today

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 10:04pm

On March 18, 1976, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with their timeless hit, "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)."

Half a century later, the song still holds a unique place in music history as the only track to give the band No. 1 hits before, during, and after The Beatles’ era of dominance.

The New Jersey rock group, formed in 1960, had already scored several chart-toppers in the early 1960s, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man,” per History

They later achieved another No. 1 with “Rag Doll” in 1964, during the height of Beatlemania. Then, more than a decade later, “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” became the band’s fifth and final U.S. No. 1, topping charts also in Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The Four Season group members Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, Frankie Valli and Nick Massi posed for photo.

Unlike many of the Four Seasons’ hits, this song did not feature Frankie Valli’s iconic falsetto as the primary lead. Instead, drummer Gerry Polci sang the verses, Valli contributed to the bridge sections and backing vocals and bassist Don Ciccone delivered the soaring falsetto line that fans still sing along to:

"And I felt a rush like a rolling ball of thunder / Spinning my head around and taking my body under."

The change in lead vocals came after Warner Bros. suggested giving Polci and Ciccone more spotlight to differentiate the group from Valli’s solo work. This bold move paid off, helping the band remain relevant and fresh during the mid-1970s disco era.

Interestingly, the song almost wasn’t set in 1963 at all. According to Stereogum, co-writer Bob Gaudio revealed that the track’s original lyrics were written to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 under the title “December 5th, 1933.”

The band liked the groove but not the lyrics, so Judy Parker, Gaudio’s future wife, rewrote them as a nostalgic love story about a first romantic encounter. Parker’s approach kept the song family-friendly, aligning with the Four Seasons’ clean-cut image.

The track was part of their 1975 album Who Loves You, which became a surprise commercial success. Billboard praised the single for having “the flavor and fun of ’60s rock with a disco feel” while Cash Box highlighted its “unforgettable bass line” and sing-along quality.

Upon release, “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” topped the UK Singles Chart on February 21, 1976, and repeated the feat in the U.S. by March 13, holding the No. 1 spot for three weeks. Beyond North America, it reached No. 2 in New Zealand, No. 3 in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Legacy of the Four Seasons

Formed in Newark, New Jersey in 1960, the Four Seasons are among the best-selling musical groups of all time, with an estimated 100 million records sold worldwide. Their original lineup, including Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Valli received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, the only Grammy honor for the group.

Even today, decades after their chart-topping days, the Four Seasons continue to tour. According to Detroit Free Press, Valli’s farewell tour includes stops in Detroit, Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

Who Is Joseph Duggar’s Wife? What to Know About Kendra Caldwell and Their 4 Kids After His Arrest

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 9:56pm

The Duggar family has been in the media spotlight ever since their reality show 19 Kids and Counting premiered on TLC back in 2008 and that scrutiny will certainly continue with the recent news that Joseph Duggar has been arrested for child molestation. According to Florida news outlet WJHG 7, the 31-year-old former TV star was arrested and charged on March 18 with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior, involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor. The incident reportedly took place in 2020 during a family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida; the alleged victim was only nine years old.

It's just the latest scandal for the larger Duggar clan, which is helmed by parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar — Joseph's older brother Joshua Duggar was previously the subject of his own child molestation allegations, including several of his own sisters (Jill, Jessa, Jinger, and Jana), as well as an Ashley Madison data breach. Those scandals had ripple effects throughout the Duggar family, leading to the cancellation of their two TLC reality series, and it's no doubt that Joseph's actions will be similarly burdensome for his wife and young kids.

With that in mind, here's what we know about Joseph Duggar's wife Kendra Caldwell and their four children.

Who is Joseph Duggar’s wife, Kendra Caldwell?

Joseph Duggar has been married to wife Kendra Caldwell since September 8, 2017; they wed at First Baptist Church in Siloam Springs, Arkansas when the pair was 23 years old and 19 years old, respectively. “It is an amazing feeling to be husband and wife,” the young groom said at the time, per PEOPLE. “It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of to have a wife and to raise a family in a way that honors the lord. We are very excited to see what God has in the future for us.”

Kendra is the daughter of Paul Caldwell, a Baptist pastor, and Christina Caldwell. She was raised in a conservative and strictly religious household in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and was homeschooled, graduating in 2016.

How long have Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwellbeen married for?

Joseph Duggar and wife Kendra Caldwell have been married for eight years. The former proposed on May 26, 2017, at his sisterJoy-Anna Duggar's wedding reception, as shown during an episode of the family's reality show Counting On — during the customary bouquet toss, the blooms were pointedly given to Kendra, signifying that she would be next in line to get married. Her future husband got down on one knee then and there.

How did Joseph Duggar and Kendra Caldwell meet?

Joseph and Kendra Duggar first met while attending the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Kendra's father was the pastor there and the Duggar family were patrons. The young Duggar reportedly asked Mr. Caldwell for permission to court his daughter; he later presented Kendra with a promise ring, per PEOPLE.

“I’ve known Kendra for about five years now and we met at their church. We’ve been talking for close to six months. I guess we would call it more of a friendship stage,” Joseph said of their first date, which was detailed in the season three premiere of Counting On. “Our plan is to go to the car auction and use this as a decoy so she won’t catch on to what we’re actually planning on doing.”

“Once we’re finished up with the auction, I’m going to take her to the house where I was actually born. It’s kind of on the way home, and then I’ll pop the question to her and ask her if she’ll start a courtship with me,” Duggar explained. “It’ll show her where I started my life and then maybe we’ll be able to start a new portion of life with her there.”

Garrett David Duggar (Age 7)

The eldest Duggar child is described as a "deep thinker" with a "serious personality," per The Duggar Family website. The soon-to-be eight-year-old reportedly enjoys playing with trucks, cards and "anything with wheels" and loves giving hugs and kisses to younger sister Addison, who he calls "A-DDIE."

Addison Renee Duggar (Age 6)

"Bundle of joy" Addison is quick with a smile and a laugh, per the family website. The six-year-old "enjoys following her big brother around, trying new foods, and holding baby dolls."

Brooklyn Praise Duggar (Age 5)

Youngest Duggar daughter Brooklyn just celebrated her fifth birthday last month, on February 19. Back when she was a "sweet newborn," however," proud parents Joseph and Kendra shared on the family website that they were "looking forward to discovering more about her personality in the coming months."

Justus Joseph Duggar (Age 3)

Less is known about the littlest Duggar, Justus Joseph, including his set birthdate — it's been reported that the boy was born between late May 2022 and early June 2022, which would make him three years old.

Two months earlier, the pair also posted a selfie from an anniversary trip, during which they reportedly took in a stage performance of Sight & Sound: JESUS. "We had a blast!" they captioned the pic.

Former 19 Kids And Counting star Josh Duggar poses for a booking photo after his arrest April 29, 2021, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Where is Josh Duggar now?

Despite his incarceration, Duggar remains married to his wife Anna Duggar; the couple wed in 2008 and share seven children, including Mackenzie, Michael, Marcus, Meredith, Mason, Maryella and Madyson.

How long is Josh Duggar in jail for?

The Duggar son is presently serving a sentence of 151 months — a little more than 12.5 years — following his December 2021 conviction on federal charges of receiving child sexual abuse material. As of early 2026, Josh Duggar is expected to be released from prison in October 2032.

Bravo Just Shelved a Popular Show — and Fans Are Concerned

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 9:41pm

What's your favorite Real Housewives ensemble?

If it's the gang from Florida, fans were in for a shocker on Wednesday, March 18. Variety reports that Bravo has put a pause on The Real Housewives of Miami after weeks of rumors.

The reality show's seventh season came to an end in October 2025 and is cherished by Bravo die-hards but, as Variety noted this week, was ultimately the least-watched series among the Real Housewives franchise.

Fan accounts have already taken to social media to spread the news about the recent shelving of Miami, with @thebravoguru even weighing in their post's caption that "the revived series shimmered with great storylines, funny reads, and dynamic friendships. I truly feel that moving the series back on to Bravo is what sealed its fate."

View this post on Instagram

And the comments left on the post above indicate that many of the show's other fans are certainly disappointed as well. "Put RHOBH on pause. Not Miami," wrote one Instagram user, while another person commented, "oh this is TERRIBLE news… these women deserve better!!"

In the comments section of a similar post by @therealhousewiveszone that revealed the news, fans also didn't hold back in expressing their reactions. "Does no one have taste!???" one person commented, while another Instagram user wrote, "This is crazy. RHOM is ten times more interesting and fun that RHOBH but yet producers just have let it skate by for season after season. Don’t get me wrong. I love BH (more like Encino and the valley ha ha I see them all over my neighborhood! ) but it’s stale. This is just [sad]. Miami is great!"

The Real Housewives of Miami is known for featuring a mostly Latina cast, as well as Bravo’s first fully out LGBTQ cast member in Julia Lemigova, who is married to tennis star Martina Navratilova.

Beloved '90s Actor, Who Became a TV Villain, Turns 64

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 9:31pm

Birthday wishes are in order for actor Thomas Ian Griffith.

Griffith, who first rose to fame in the 1990s, turned 64 on Wednesday. While longtime fans remember him from his early film roles, a new generation has come to know him as the unforgettable villain Terry Silver on the hit series Cobra Kai.

Griffith originally introduced the character of Terry Silver in The Karate Kid Part III, where his over-the-top performance and ruthless energy made him one of the franchise’s most memorable antagonists. Decades later, he reprised the role in Cobra Kai, bringing a more layered and complex version of the character to life.

"Karate Kid [Part III] is by no means a great film, but I’m so proud of my work because even back then, the idea was just to be brave enough not to hold back," Griffith told Vulture. "John Avildsen took a chance on an unknown actor and just kept giving me free rein to say, 'Bring all those things you do, that glee.' I think he really tapped into that."

On the series, Silver evolves from a manipulative businessman into a full-fledged power player within the world of karate, delivering some of the show's most intense and dramatic moments. His return quickly became a standout for fans, with many praising Griffith for seamlessly stepping back into the role after so many years.

"Karate Kid III was my first film, so it was always such a part of me," Griffith said. "But I had no interest in repeating anything I’d done in the past, so it was really refreshing to hear I could take this archetypal villain from the '80s and show some different colors."

Before his resurgence on Cobra Kai, Griffith built a steady career in film and television throughout the '90s, appearing in action and drama projects and even working behind the scenes as a writer and producer alongside his wife, Mary Page Keller.

His return as Terry Silver marked a major comeback moment, reintroducing him to audiences and proving the lasting impact of his original performance.

As Thomas Ian Griffith turns 64, his resume and legacy continue to grow thanks to a villain fans love to hate and a career that has come full circle.

These U.S. Airports Have the Worst TSA Lines Right Now—Is Yours One of Them?

Wed, 03/18/2026 - 9:28pm

Lawmakers failed to come to a funding agreement at the end of January, prompting a partial government shutdown that eliminated funding to the agency that runs the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). As a result, travelers across the country reported airport delays, as they stood in long lines waiting to get through security checkpoints.

Now, with no end to the partial shutdown in sight, and many travelers trying to head out for their spring travel plans, people are searching for ways to get through TSA checkpoints faster so they can avoid missing their flights. And while there are some tricks people can use to make things move a little faster, many may find that their best best is avoiding traveling out of the airports that have the longest lines. So, which ones are those? Keep reading as we share what people are saying about their experiences right now.

Airport delays are worsening as the partial government shutdown drags on, with thousands of TSA agents working without pay and calling out sick. The staffing shortages are leading to long security lines and raising concerns about travel during the busy spring break season. #travel #airport #traveltok #aviation #airline #TSA

♬ original sound - CBSEveningNews - CBSEveningNews Call Outs Are Causing Longer Lines

Staffing issues appear to be at the forefront of the issue with TSA delays, with Business Insider reporting that callouts are one of the major reasons why certain airports are seeing longer lines. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared its latest figures with Business Insider, based on data gathered up to Mar. 16. According to them, 366 TSA agents have left their jobs between the beginning of the shutdown and Monday, which was just a few days after agents experienced their first missed paycheck.

Not only are agents walking away from their posts, but some are also refusing to come in some days, and instead opting to callout sick instead. And while Monday was the day with the most callouts to date since the shutdown, DHS told the publication that they have been seeing high numbers of callouts across the board.

According to them, the following airports have faced some of the highest average callout rates since the shutdown began:

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, which has seen an average of 21.5 percent of its agents call out
  • John F. Kennedy International, which has seen an average of 21.4 percent of its agents call out
  • Houston Hobby, which has seen an average of 20.1 percent of its agents call out
  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International, which has seen an average of 16.5 percent of its agents call out
  • Pittsburg International, which has seen an average of 13.8 percent of its agents call out

Prior to the shutdown, the average call out rate was less than 2 percent, highlighting just how big of a jump there has been.

Parade reached out to the TSA for comment on the checkpoint wait times, but they did not respond to our request prior to publication.

Travelers Are Sharing Their Experiences

According to Steve Griswold, owner of Pixie Vacations, passengers flying out of Atlanta's Hartsfield Jackson Airport are seeing an average wait time of 90 minutes. "So you need to arrive at least two hours head of when you would normally arrive for your flight," he explained, adding that passengers may need to arrive as early as four hours prior to their flight to be safe. And Griswold says he's hearing the same things about the reason for the slowdown at these busy airports right now, explaining how the gate agents he has spoken with have also said that the bulk of the delays have been caused by TSA callouts.

However, Lauren Leibowitz of New Jersey says that she was pleasantly surprised to see how fast things went during her Mar. 14 flight from Orlando International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport. "There were about three people working security, and it went by quickly," she recalled, noting that she was pleasantly surprised by the speed, especially considering a lot of families were coming from Disney at the time.

Meanwhile, a Pennsylvania man said he flew out of Newark that same day, and spent less than 30 minutes in line. However, arrived at 6:00 a.m., which could've played a part in how quickly he was able to get through the line.

Some Airports Have Faster Security Lines

While I've personally seen horror stories from travelers who have been stuck in lines for hours on end—including one newlywed who said a delay at Florida's Fort Lauderdale Airport saw her waiting in line for a shocking 12 hours—there are some airports that seem to be having some good luck when it comes to wait times. According to On Air Parking, which keeps track of airport security lines around the country, there are some wait times that they consider "short," even in this current slowdown.

There are even a few where the lines are listed as taking less than 10 minutes to get through, including:

  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
  • Palm Springs International Airport
  • Las Vegas McCarran International Airport
  • Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

Of course, all of this can change in an instant. If you're curious what the wait time will be at your local airport, download the MyTSA App, which gives passengers 24/7 access to the TSA wait times at participating airlines. Additionally, as time goes on, some airlines that previously saw bigger wait times could see those numbers go down as more passengers take advantage of options that allow them to clear security faster, like CLEAR, Global Entry, and PreCheck.
