To find out more, we spoke with Jessa Paschke, a Mars pet nutrition behavior consultant, to get all the details on the things that no one talks about when it comes to the first month with a new puppy. From setting realistic training expectations and preparing how many potty breaks they will need to getting their nutrition just right, Paschke explains it all.

Why the First 30 Days Are About Survival, Not Perfection

The most important thing to keep in mind, especially during the first 30 days of having your sweet new puppy, is that it's about survival, not perfection. In other words, just do your best and remember that some of the tougher days are just part of the journey.

"The first 30 days with a new puppy are all about establishing routines," Paschke says. "Puppies thrive on predictability, and one of the most important things you can do is create consistency around feeding, potty breaks, sleep and play."

She adds that feeding is a great place to start with creating a routine for your new puppy. "If possible, continue the food your puppy was eating with the breeder, rescue or foster, and transition gradually if you decide to make a change," Paschke says. "Just as importantly, choose a puppy food that not only provides complete and balanced nutrition, but that your puppy enjoys eating and tolerates well."

You want to make mealtime an important part of your puppy's daily routine, and once that's established, things can get a bit easier.

The 'Puppy Blues': Why No One Talks About the Overwhelm

As you and your fluffy bundle of love both get used to your new normal, you might experience something called "the puppy blues."

"Puppy blues are common—and for many, it is difficult to talk about," Paschke says. "Bringing home a new puppy is one of life's great joys, but it also comes with a period of adjustment that can catch some new pet parents by surprise. Sleep routines may change, daily schedules shift and caring for a puppy's needs can feel like a big responsibility. It's a normal adjustment, and for some people, those changes can feel a little overwhelming at first."

As you and your puppy get adjusted, it's important to give both yourself and your puppy some grace and time. Your feelings are normal, and it's not a sign that you made the wrong choice.

"These feelings often ease as confidence grows and the bond with [your] puppy develops," Paschke says. "If you're finding the adjustment difficult, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian, trainer, or other trusted sources for guidance and support—small changes and the right advice can make a big difference."

5 Hard Truths About the First Month With a New Puppy

Here's exactly what you should know before you bring a new puppy into your home—both the good and the unexpected.

1. They're a Lot of Responsibility

"Welcoming a pet into your family is an exciting decision, and one that comes with long-term responsibilities. Along with love and companionship, pets require ongoing care, including veterinary visits, quality nutrition, training, enrichment and other day-to-day needs. Planning ahead can make the transition smoother and help create a strong foundation for a lifelong bond," Paschke says.

2. Routine Is Everything

"Build a healthy and consistent routine from day one. Puppies have small stomachs and growing bodies, so they naturally need to eat more often and take frequent bathroom breaks," Paschke explains. "Feeding nutrient-rich food formulated for their stage of life, including the right balance of protein and essential nutrients on a consistent schedule, helps support healthy growth and creates a good routine for both pet and pet parent. If possible, plan for a little extra flexibility at work during those first few weeks. Resting when your puppy rests can help make the adjustment smoother."

3. You'll Learn All About Your Puppy's Digestive System

"As you work through potty training, you'll naturally become familiar with what's normal for your puppy's digestion," Paschke says. "A helpful way to remember what healthy stools look like is the '3 Cs': consistent, compact and chocolate-colored—a guideline from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute. A healthy gut plays an important role in your puppy's overall well-being. Because their digestive systems are still developing, introducing new foods gradually can help keep them on track."

4. Sorry, but Treats Must be Given in Moderation

"It is natural to want to reward your new puppy, but treats should be given in moderation. Some human foods can upset a puppy's developing digestive system, and others may not be safe for dogs," Paschke explains. "Research from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute shows that dogs have a unique gut microbiome, which is different from our own, meaning their nutritional needs are different too. To help maintain a healthy nutritional balance, consider measuring out a portion of your puppy's daily kibble allowance and using it as training rewards throughout the day." 

5. Puppies Have Very Specific Nutritional Needs

"Nutrition plays an important role in supporting your puppy's healthy growth and development," Paschke says. "Puppies have unique nutritional needs, including specific levels of protein, DHA and calcium to support brain development, bone growth and immune function during a critical stage of life. Establishing this foundation early is one of the most important forms of proactive wellness, helping support healthy development while setting the stage for long-term health benefits."

Why Lowering Your Training Expectations Is the Best Thing You Can Do

When it comes to training, you need to be realistic so you're not setting yourself or your puppy up for failure and frustration. It takes time, effort and patience.

"Setting realistic expectations is one of the best ways to set your puppy up for success. Puppies learn one step at a time, so focusing on small, achievable goals helps build confidence and keeps training enjoyable for both puppy and pet parent," Paschke recommends. "Puppies learn best through positive reinforcement—rewarding the behavior you want to see more often. This approach supports their natural learning process, strengthens the bond between puppy and pet parent, and lays the foundation for lifelong learning."

For training, it's also key to not overwhelm either yourself or your new puppy. Shorter training sessions are actually more productive and helpful.

"Short training sessions of three to five minutes are often the most effective," Paschke says. "Consistency across those short, frequent sessions is what builds real skill over time."

Why You Shouldn't Do This Alone

Another important thing to keep in mind: you're not alone in this! Lean on family and friends to help you make the smoothest transition possible. It's also important to consult experts, such as your veterinarian and trainers, if you need additional support and guidance. It takes a village, as the saying goes.

"Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting transition, and it's perfectly OK to lean on others as you settle into a new routine," Paschke says. "Building a support network early can benefit both you and your puppy. Your veterinarian is one of your most valuable allies in those early weeks. They can guide you on nutrition, appropriate exercise for your puppy's age and breed, vaccination schedules, and early behavioral questions."

When Does It Actually Get Easier? (Spoiler: It Does)

While there are days you may be wondering if you're cut out for puppy parenthood, the answer is that you absolutely are—and it will get easier (even if it doesn't seem like it).

"It gets easier earlier than it feels like it will, but it's worth knowing what 'easier' actually looks like," Paschke says. "For most puppy owners, the first real shift happens somewhere around the 8- to 12-week mark of having the puppy home. Sleep starts to consolidate as the puppy's bladder capacity grows and their anxiety about their new environment settles. Basic routines—meals, walks, bedtime—begin to feel familiar to both of you. And crucially, the puppy's individual personality starts to emerge, which is often the moment the effort starts to feel worth it in a new way."

Ultimately, though, it's important to be honest with yourself about what easier actually means.

"Easier doesn't mean effortless—it means familiar," Paschke says. "The work doesn't stop, but it stops feeling so overwhelming. Every pet and every pet parent will find their rhythm in their own time, and even the most experienced owners need a period of adjustment with a new animal. Give yourself the same grace you'd give your puppy."

If you're lucky enough to live with multiple animals, it's always the hope that they'll form their own bonds within the pack. For Wendy Albright, a content creator who is known across the internet as The Parrot Lady, this is exactly the case with her parrots, Brody and Sweet Pea.

How to Tell If Birds Are Bonded

There are all sort of ways to tell if birds are bonded and "friends" with each other. If you're curious, some bonding behaviors can include:

• Mirroring routines and sharing different habits
• Grooming and mutual preening (like gentle head scratches!)
• Sitting and perching together and sharing their space
• Feeding each other and sharing resources like food
• Chirping and making calls to each other

While it is very sweet and fun to see your animals bond with each other, make sure to always supervise them and keep an eye on their behaviors. Bonding can lead to guarding and even aggression in some instances, which obviously you want to avoid. It can also lead to difficulties with you, the pet parent, bonding with the birds, so it's something to always be aware of and make sure you're handling responsibly.

I have seen a lot of adorable puppies in my life, but every now and then one comes along that makes me stop scrolling so fast I nearly sprain my thumb. Wolfdogs are unique animals created by crossing domestic dogs with wolves, and they can have very different personalities depending on their genetics and individual temperament.

They typically require experienced caregivers, secure outdoor enclosures, extensive socialization, and plenty of physical and mental enrichment. Many wolfdogs are highly intelligent, athletic and independent, making them much more challenging than the average family dog.

Because of these specialized needs, wolfdogs generally aren't recommended for first-time dog parents. Anyone considering bringing one home should thoroughly research local laws and the breed's care requirements before making a decision.

The Universal Cat Distribution System has never chosen me, and that's something I think is very unfair. I've always wanted to rescue an animal in dire circumstances, but it's just never happened for me. I guess I'll just rescue my animals the standard way.

Georgie had no idea that this was going to happen. They just popped up on her skylight one day, as if they fell from the sky, and she couldn't resist bringing them inside. She wanted to make sure they were safe, and as a result, she became mom to several cats overnight.

There were 5 kittens and Mama, making a total of 6. Of those six, Georgie is keeping all but 2: she gave those 2 to a family friend. Everyone else will get to stay together forever! Hopefully, the ones who did go off to another home will get to visit sometimes!

What to Do If You Find Kittens

Right now is a pretty common time to be finding kittens: it's kitten season! Outdoor cats have started breeding again after a long winter, and as a result, there are a ton of kittens who need your help.

If you find kittens anywhere and you're comfortable (and safe) picking them up, you should do so, especially if they're in a dangerous spot like a parking lot, near a body of water, or on your roof. When you have them in a safe place:

• Check them over for any serious injuries.
• Check for any collars: try to make sure they don't belong to someone.
• Get them to the vet ASAP for a checkup.

Rescued kittens can live long and healthy lives, but early intervention is key. If cats happen to fall from the sky, the best thing to do is be prepared!

This has to be one of my favorite chicken videos ever. The scene is so simple, but it has everything: a chicken mom walking up to the coop, a baby rooster waiting inside, and one of the smallest attempts at a cock-a-doodle-doo ever captured on camera.

His human asks if he’s awake, and he answers immediately.

Not with a big, confident barnyard crow. Not with a dramatic sunrise declaration. He gives the cutest little roo sound, like his voice has not fully loaded yet, but his enthusiasm absolutely has.

Then his mom simply says she was just checking, which makes the whole thing even better. It feels less like a farm chore and more like a parent gently checking on a toddler who has started practicing their morning speeches.

The post caption explains that this little rooster is working on his crow, and another caption points out how polite he sounds while doing it. That’s the perfect word. Polite. He’s not screaming the neighborhood awake yet. He’s offering a small, respectful sample.

A commenter said one of the cutest things in the world is a baby rooster trying to crow, and I need to agree with no hesitation. There are a lot of adorable animal sounds out there, but a young rooster discovering his voice belongs near the top of the list.

I have chickens, but no rooster, and mine still yell at me every morning to feed them. They don't need a rooster to run a loud breakfast committee. If I heard this tiny practice crow coming from the coop, though, I would be useless. Feed? Yes. Snacks? Absolutely. Emotional support for vocal development? On my way.

This video isn't just cute because he's small. It’s cute because you’re hearing a little animal become himself in real time. Today, it’s one tiny, squeaky crow. Someday, it may be a full-volume barnyard performance.

For now, he’s just practicing.

And somehow, that tiny sound is enough to ruin a person’s whole day in the sweetest way.

How Roosters Learn To Crow

Young roosters usually don’t start with a perfect crow. They practice, and those early sounds can be squeaky, uneven, or hilariously tiny before they grow into the classic rooster call.

The My Pet Chicken guide explains that many roosters begin crowing around 4 or 5 months old, though some start earlier and others take longer.

A few things to know:

• Early crows can sound very rough. That tiny “roo” is normal while a young rooster figures out his voice.
• Every rooster develops differently. Breed, age, personality, and maturity can all affect when crowing starts.
• Crowing is communication. Roosters may crow to announce themselves, respond to activity, or react to changes around the flock.
• Practice usually makes it louder. The cute baby version may not stay little forever, so enjoy the tiny crow era while it lasts.

This little guy may not have mastered the full cock-a-doodle-doo yet, but he already has perfect comedic timing.

Rottweilers get a bad rap: I blame the movies, who love to make sure the "bad guys" always have one. It's not fair! These dogs are some of the silliest, sweetest pups the world has to offer, and they're overlooked so often.

This little puppy is Dyce De Rottweiler's new puppy sister, and she is taking over everyone's lives. She got the hiccups from drinking her water a little too quickly, which is one of the most common ways it happens. Puppies get the hiccups all the time!

There hasn't been too much posted about the puppy yet: she's settling in. It's best to let them settle without any distractions, but hopefully, we'll see more of her and her tiny hiccups as she gets more comfortable in her new home. I bet Dyce is being the best guide!

What Causes Puppy Hiccups?

All puppies will get the hiccups at least a few times. It's nothing to be concerned about most of the time, but it is seriously adorable. Especially when you have a cute little Rottweiler puppy!

Puppies get the hiccups at the most random times! They can happen when they:

• Eat too fast.
• Drink too fast.
• Exert themselves.
• Bark a lot.

If your puppy has the hiccups, the best thing to do is try to calm them down. Give them a belly rub: they need to relax their diaphragms to get the hiccups to go away. If they persist past a few minutes, you should call your vet, but most of the time, they'll go away on their own!

As a Maine Coon mom myself, I can tell you these giant cats are some of the sweetest, gentlest souls you'll ever meet. Sure, my own Maine Coon, Meatball, stomps around the house like a tiny horse and occasionally knocks things over with his enormous fluffy tail, but underneath all that floof is a complete sweetheart.

Newly hatched chicks can form strong attachments during a process called imprinting. They naturally bond with the first moving caregiver they encounter during a critical period after hatching, which is usually their mother or another chicken.

Occasionally, chicks may appear to imprint on people or even other animals if those individuals are providing warmth, safety, or regular care. While these interactions can be incredibly sweet, chicks should still be raised in an environment that supports their health and normal development alongside appropriate care and, when possible, other chickens.

As for gentle giant Miso ...

My dogs have almost no sense of restraint when it comes to food. When they hear the mere rustle of a bag opening or the creak of the refrigerator door, they both instantly bolt into the kitchen to see what scraps they can get. My senior Dachshund recently developed the habit of lingering by the trash to scarf down anything that doesn't make it in the can, and my Pug mix will body check anyone that gets in his way of a fallen crumb.

In the TikTok from @atchoumthecat, the pretty kitty sat at a table in front of a plant that had one stray sprig splayed out in front of him. Atchoum tried to grab on as his mom placed the twig back where it belonged, much to the feline's chagrin.

The Persian cat looked behind him to see if anyone was coming so he could take another swipe at the sprig. Thankfully, it bounced out of place again right within his reach. Atchoum wasted no time in pouncing on the plant piece before his mom took it away again.

Viewers most likely noticed Atchoum's unique appearance more than his quest for shrubbery. He has hypertrichosis, a rare condition that results in excessive hair growth.

Causes include genetic mutations, endocrine disorders, and certain medications that can trigger more hair growth as a side effect.

Symptoms of hypertrichosis include:

• Abnormally long hair.
• Increased hair density.
• Altered hair texture.
• Neurological issues.
• Facial and skeletal abnormalities.

"Cats naturally seek out elevated spaces because being up high allows them to observe their surroundings, feel safer and establish territory. When those needs aren't met, cats may be more likely to use couches, armrests, shelving and other household furniture for climbing, scratching or resting."

Cat trees, perches and even cabinet tops tend to be preferred spots for this reason. If your current setup isn't providing the height or security your cat is looking for, they're unlikely to use it.

"At the same time, owners should ensure scratching posts are stable, accessible and rewarding to use. The goal is not to punish the cat. The goal is to change which surface is most rewarding."

Texture deterrents are another tool worth trying. Dr. Myers notes that many cats dislike aluminum foil and similar materials, making them useful for steering cats away from furniture while they adjust to using proper scratching surfaces.

That said, this approach should be temporary. The goal is to guide your cat's behavior, not create long-term stress or anxiety around certain surfaces.

The Declawing Reality: Why Vets Strongly Warn Against the Procedure

Declawing is not a decision veterinarians or animal behavior professionals take lightly. As Dr. Myers points out, declawing involves the surgical amputation of the last bone of each toe, which is the human equivalent of removing a fingertip at the last joint. While there are rare cases where the procedure is medically necessary, it is not considered an appropriate solution for furniture damage.

Cats scratching furniture is a frustrating but very common issue. While the impulse to correct or shame a cat for the behavior is understandable, it's important to remember that scratching is completely normal. A Greater Swiss Mountain Dog's Temperament

Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, also known affectionately as a "Swissy" or a "GSMD" are gorgeous worker dogs that were originally bred in the Swiss Alps. Because of their size and stature some even call them a "poor man's horse." While they're a popular breed, they're slightly less well known than others like a Bernese Mountain Dog, for example.

As a breed, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are very enthusiastic, happy dogs who are very attached to their people and families. While they have been bred to be working dogs, GSMDs are actually relatively calm, mellow, non-reactive. These dogs are very much "velcro" pets who love being around their people.

From a training perspective, a Swissy can be on the stubborn side and a bit difficult to train. They need (and want!) a fair amount of exercise and love a task or a sanctioned activity. Consistency and routine are great things for these dogs and help them thrive.

Another thing to consider if you're curious about what it might be like to have a Swissy in your life is they have a pretty impressive vertical. Always something to consider, especially if you leave the windows of your car down.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs use vocalizations to communicate their emotions, including when they're happy.

Whines and growls actually communicate happiness, and it sounds like some of Lady's high-pitched whines are letting us know how happy she is when her Mom gives her a good old-fashioned cuddle session.

It's funny because dog whines are often associated with distress, but they can definitely also come out when the pup is happy and excited!

You have to know what to listen for when it comes to whining.

According to the AKC, a whine that represents happiness drops in pitch toward the end of the sound, while if the dog is in distress, the whine will go higher in pitch at the end.

A subtle but important difference!

Clearly, Lady is very content as she gets all the kisses from her mom.

And though she lives a very fancy life with her influencer mom that includes trips to Paris, hotel staycations, caviar tastings, and glamorous photo shoots, all this little Lady needs at the end of the day is some kisses and cuddles!

In the TikTok from @jadecooperlife, Opossum stood sadly in his kennel and stared into the camera as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. The pretty Pittie previously posed for a picture when he first entered the shelter and literally had a huge smile on his face before realizing he was headed to a cage.

"He looked so happy in his intake photo — Poor baby didn’t know," the caption shared. "Someone give him a home!"

The beautiful image was part of Opossum's bio, which stated that the precious pooch has a "low" energy level, and gets along with kids and cats.

Followers fell in love with Opossum and his photogenic smile filled with hope. Many rallied to get the canine cutie adopted.

Great news! According to a recent update on the social media post, the friendly fur baby was adopted and heading to his forever home.

Why Pit Bulls Wait Longer to Find Homes

Hesitation to adopt a Pit Bull due to a negative stereotype still remains today. A previous study revealed that potential pet parents are less likely to adopt a dog if a shelter classes them as a Pit Bull. The breed is still perceived as more aggressive and less friendly than other breeds.

Pit Bulls gained the unfavorable stigma after the abuse and exploitation they endured in being trained for dog fighting. Despite years of advocacy debunking the many myths that surround the breed, Pit Bulls still have an unjustly tarnished reputation that makes adoption more challenging.

When I was a kid, I watched this movie called Open Season, and it inspired me greatly. The main character, a park ranger, has a Grizzly Bear named Boog for a pet. I was, and honestly still am, very jealous. Unfortunately, though, bears don't make good pets.

This bear lives at the Philadelphia Zoo, where he's obviously having the time of his life. There are three bears living in their new Carey Bear exhibit: two Andean Bears, Alba and Turbo, and one Sloth Bear, Bhalu. They might add more in the future, but for now, it's just them!

The one in the Rubbermaid tub (someone in the comments said RubBEARmaid, which is awesome) is Turbo, the male Andean Bear. You can tell because of his eye markings, and he looks a bit less fluffy than Bhalu. He really seemed to love his bath... Almost as much as I love him!

Those tiny feet might just be the cutest toe beans ever!

At birth, the tiny kitten looks much like any newborn cat. His eyes are closed, his fur is still sparse, and his little pink paws seem both big and small. Even on day one, his striking white facial markings stand out against his darker coloring, especially the expressive little brows.
