Some dogs don’t need saving in the dramatic sense—they just need consistency, familiar faces and a place where they don’t have to prove themselves every day.

Ferb, a 10-year-old senior dog who became a favorite at the local Station Five fire station in St. Charles, Missouri, didn’t change who he was to get adopted. He just finally ended up somewhere that understood him.

Ferb spent many years at Five Acres Animal Shelter, according to an article from InvestigateTV. He had been adopted and returned twice, but then, finally, the kennel door opened and he found his forever home.

How a Shelter Dog Became Part of a Fire Crew

Ferb’s turning point didn’t happen in a single moment. It built slowly, visit by visit, as firefighters kept coming back.

Everything started when the local firefighters learned about Ferb’s obsession with sirens. According to the shelter, whenever a fire truck passed by with its sirens, he would let out a howl. When people at the fire station learned about his behavior, they invited him to the station. They even celebrated his birthday together there.

Soon, Ferb began visiting the firefighters weekly with trips to the firehouse. The station provided something he didn’t have at the shelter: routine, structure, timing and knowing his role. He fit into their rhythm immediately.

At the fire station, Ferb got his own bed, and would greet firefighters with a wagging tail every time they came back from a mission.

Finding His Forever Home

It didn’t take long for people to notice that Ferb is an awesome dog once he was out of the kennel. With the firefighters, he was getting plenty of attention.

Two weeks after his story aired, a couple contacted the shelter about Ferb. They saw the story, and said, “He looked like a good dog, and we loved his name.”

Once the kennel door finally opened for Ferb and his forever home, we can be sure he couldn’t stop wagging his tail going into his new home.

The news story said he has a new favorite place: the kitchen, a place where he patiently waits for treats.

After waiting 10 years to find his forever home, we're so happy he finally found his because every dog deserves a chance at a happy life.

The now-viral video was uploaded to the @sarrahnewin TikTok account, and the second you see him, you understand why people cannot stop watching. He is not just tired. He is spiritually offline. Like if you asked him a question, he would simply blink once and power down.

The comments immediately turned it into a full personality.

“How I look when I’m congested,” one person wrote, and honestly, that is exactly the face. Just fully blocked, no thoughts getting through.

“Me, when someone talks to me in the morning,” which feels a little too real. No eye contact. No conversation. Just survival.

“Get that baby to sleep!” someone begged, and yes. Please. He has done enough.

“Me, hungover the next day thinking I really didn’t need that last shot,” another added, which… yeah. That tracks.

“Me waking up at 7 p.m. after saying I was taking a 2-hour nap at 2 p.m.,” and suddenly this dog is all of us.

And then, “When my husband tells me to watch his golf video,” which might be the most specific and accurate one of all.

I keep staring at his face because it somehow gets worse the longer I look. The eyes drifting. The tiny mouth. The general vibe of “Please stop judging me.” If I looked like this, I would simply cancel the day and crawl back into bed. For a week.

Did you know? 🐾 Dogs generally sleep for 12 to 14 hours a day on average, although this can vary significantly with age, with puppies and senior dogs needing more sleep (up to 18-20 hours) and working or smaller breeds potentially sleeping less. Dogs' sleep patterns are different from humans, involving frequent naps throughout the day and night, and proper rest is crucial for their physical and mental health, including immune function and repair. So try not to wake a sleeping dog… they NEED it.

Adult dogs typically need around 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day, though it can vary depending on their age, breed, and activity level. Smaller breeds like Shih-Tzus can sometimes sleep even more, especially if they are living a very demanding life of… being carried around and judging everyone.

Pups don't sleep in one long stretch like humans. Instead, they nap throughout the day, which is why you will often see them fully passed out one minute and ready to go the next.

If a dog looks especially exhausted, like this little guy, it could just mean he had a busy day, did a lot of playing, or is simply in a deep rest cycle. Puppies and senior dogs tend to sleep even more as their bodies grow or slow down.

As long as your furbaby is eating well, active when awake, and not showing signs of illness, a lot of sleep is usually completely normal.

That said, if your dog ever looks like they are actively fighting to stay conscious like this… maybe just let them nap. Immediately.

Friendships can form in the most unexpected places—like this one, which began in a veterinary hospital during recovery.

At a vet hospital run by Maryland-based animal rescue Last Chance Animal Rescue, a young dog named Blueberry and a kitten named Meadow were both healing from life-changing injuries.

Blueberry, a 1-year-old French Bulldog mix, had one of her front legs amputated after being found on the side of the road with serious injuries. Meadow, a 7-month-old black kitten, also underwent an amputation after arriving at the rescue with part of her hind leg missing.

Both were adjusting to life as “tripods,” and somewhere in that process, they found each other.

“They met while recovering at our vet hospital and quickly became inseparable—two three-legged survivors learning how to navigate the world again, side by side,” the rescue shared on Facebook. 

From Recovery Buddies to Best Friends

Meadow, described by the rescue as a bit of a “kitty ambassador,” would visit and comfort other animals recovering from surgery. Typically, the other animals wouldn't engage with Meadow much, but with Blueberry, the connection was mutual.

The two began spending more and more time together—playing, cuddling and simply existing side by side as they healed. It was as if they were helping each other through it.

A Hopeful Wish Comes True

As Blueberry and Meadow got stronger, the rescue had one big hope: that they might be adopted together. It wasn’t a requirement, but it was clear just how much they meant to each other.

And then, the right people came along. After seeing their story, a Maryland couple stepped forward to adopt both animals, recognizing that their bond was something special. The couple already had experience caring for a three-legged pet—their tripod cat named Cici, who they adopted in 2023—making them a perfect fit.

“Now settling into their new home with two feline siblings (including a fellow tripod!), they’ve been home for almost a week and are doing great,” the rescue wrote in a follow-up Facebook post. 

A Story of Resilience and Friendship

Blueberry and Meadow’s story is heartwarming, but it’s also a reminder of how resilient animals can be.

Despite trauma, surgery and major life changes, both of them have continued to show curiosity, affection and an ability to form deep bonds.

Ultimately, this story is a wonderful reminder that healing doesn’t just come from time—it can also come from having someone by your side who understands. For these two best friends, that’s exactly what they found in each other.

There's trail footage from near South Lake Tahoe that caught exactly that situation—a mama bear and her baby playing what looks like an actual game of hide and seek in the forest. A day in the life of Baby Corn is something magical. The rescue cat with the cutest wobbly walk continues winning fans over with every new experience (me included). Though Mom never thought to gift Corn a ball, he clearly knew exactly what to do with it—and look at that soccer-level footwork!

Having followed Corn's journey from the start, it's a wonderful thing to see him so excited about every new toy, activity, or interaction. The Black Cat with the lookalike stuffies puts everything he has into every moment, reminding us all to enjoy the little things more often.

Corns wobbly ways are actually a noncontagious, nonprogressive neurological condition called cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). This is when the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination (the cerebellum) is underdeveloped at birth. Since the brain stops growing, it remains in an immature state.

The result is a "wobbly" kitty whose movements are jerky and cartoonish, sometimes with tremors or falling over, but it doesn't worsen over time.

The severity of this condition depends on how far along in development the kitten is in utero before Mom is infected with the viral infection that causes it. Then, she may pass it down to unborn babies.

The good news is that Corn is thriving and living his best life. Maybe one day we'll catch him kicking the soccer ball around with the pros!

As someone who loves all animals, I get a slew of mixed emotions watching rescues. We're so happy that the animals are being removed from something that's not safe, but it's also really hard to see their appearance not being treated the way they should be. On April 1, @tabbyseigfried, a marine biologist working in sea turtle rehabilitation and conservation, shared a video about a sea turtle named Syrena, who was exhibiting symptoms of debilitated turtle syndrome (DTS), according to the video. They're not sure what causes DTS, but once they found Syrena and saw she was covered in barnacles, the rescue team went right to work. 

Over the course of 92 days, the team worked to bring Syrena out of the danger zone since the survival rate is only 20%, she explained. They were thankfully able to "bring her back to life," and she looks so much healthier now.

In the comments, people were encouraged to ask questions, and they had a lot of them. 

One person asked, "Thank you for all the hard work in saving these turtles! Is there any way we can help support your work?" Tabby answered her question, sharing that the "best way is to spread awareness."

Another wrote, "What’s her estimated age? Survival likelihood after release? Did she spend time in a freshwater tank to make barnacle removal easier?" Tabby explained that they can't estimate her age, but they believe she is an adult. 

Someone else shared, "I’m so glad she’s healthy. On my island, we have so many turtles, and they truly are magical creatures."

Other comments included, "Thank you for all of your hard work!! Super inspirational," and "Thank you so much." And a lot of people asked for videos of them removing all the barnacles.

How Did the Rescue Conservation Team Find Syrena?

In a previously published video, we learn how the conservation team came across Syrena and saw footage of them pulling her into the boat.

According to the video, the marine biologists found the sea turtle near the shore and struggling. They jumped in to help her onto the boat so they could attempt to save her life, unsure if that would be possible given how much she was struggling. She immediately received "critical care she needs to stabilize" and described her condition as being "very serious."

But thankfully, with the incredible strength Syrena showed and the dedicated team, she's on the upswing, and that's amazing!

When you have just $11 to your name and you choose to spend it feeding your cats instead of yourself, that's love. And that's exactly what happened in Alabaster, Alabama.

A man living in a small shed in Shelby County was evicted, leaving nearly 100 cats without a place to call home. But this isn't a story about neglect—it's about a man who cared so deeply about others that he went without to make sure his cats didn't.

It started five years ago, the man had two older fixed cats and took in one stray who turned out to be pregnant. Unortunately, when cats aren't spayed or neutered, the population can explode faster than a caretaker can keep up. The shed had power and water but no ceiling, so cats were living in the rafters. Here's the great news: these cats are in great shape. Kitty Kat Haven & Rescue has found 91 cats so far, and one just gave birth to another litter Friday. Most are less than five years old. They're very social. They’re adorable and they're adoptable.

"So many rescues would just take them in and euthanize," Brown said. "And that's not what we want because these cats are actually in great shape. We really feel strongly that they have a chance at being wonderful, adoptable pets. And we want to do everything that we can to get them to that place."

The rescue is racing to find homes, provide medical care, and spay and neuter the cats who are old enough. Even with other rescue groups taking in dozens of them, they still can't take all that are left.

And you can see why. Emma moves through the world with so much trust and confidence. She leans into her people, follows their voices, plays like any other dog, and just… exists in this really pure, uncomplicated joy.

There is also a moment where she is wearing little googly eyes over her empty eye sockets, and I need you to understand I lost it. It is ridiculous and sweet and somehow perfectly captures the vibe of this whole story. Nothing about her life is defined by what she is missing. It is defined by how loved she is.

While they have a petite muzzle that lends itself to a grumpy look, Persians tend to enjoy the company of humans. “Persian cats often will follow their owners from room to room,” Hunt says. “They frequently are lap cats as well.” Just be aware that this breed prefers a peaceful environment if you adopt one. “They appear to be the happiest in a stable and predictable home environment,” she says. “Instead of running around the house all day, they are known to have a relaxed and easygoing nature.”

Our grumpy cat breeds list wouldn't be complete without the Exotic Shorthair, which has an adorably grumpy look that’s similar to Persians, just with a shorter coat. “They are sometimes called ‘Persians in pajamas’ because Exotic Shorthairs have a short, thick coat instead of the Persian’s long, fluffy coat,” Hunt says.

So what is an Exotic Shorthair cat's personality like? "This cat breed that looks mean is actually known for being friendly, quiet and extremely affectionate," according to Warner. "They appear to inherit the gentle and human-loving personality that is characteristic of Persians, but in a slightly more relaxed and playful manner. This feline enjoys spending time with its humans while also enjoying the quiet. “Their rather serious and grumpy face may not reflect their true and loving nature,” Warner says. "This is a lower-energy breed, so expect your Exotic Shorthair to spend more time cuddling in your lap than zipping around your place."

One cat breed that looks angry but is nice are British Shorthairs. While they have a resting face that borders on serious and grumpy, largely due to their round faces and chubby cheeks, Hunt says they are great family cats. “British Shorthair cats are very calm and gentle cats, so they are ideal for a home with children or other pets,” she says. "This misunderstood cat breed has an affectionate personality and often will follow their owner from room to room in their house, always wanting to be nearby and social."

Warner is also a fan of this breed. “British Shorthairs tend to be absolutely wonderful cats to have around the house and appear to be independent but not aloof, and affectionate but not demanding,” she says. “Owners often adore their peaceful nature and how they are a steady presence at home.”

Another grumpy-faced cat to consider? Scottish Folds! They have signature folded-over ears, along with a grumpy face. This feline is also whipsmart, according to Hunt. “They are very intelligent and thus quite trainable, should the owner spend the time to do so,” she says. They’re also affectionate and like to be where their owner is. “Some are lap cats, while others prefer just to be nearby their pet parent instead,” she says. “Despite their energy level, they are gentle cats, and appropriate for a family or homes that have other pets.” Warner points out that Scottish Folds tend to develop close personal relationships with family members, and enjoy being involved in the lives of their humans.

Himalayan cats have traits inherited from both Persian and Siamese cats, along with a delightfully cute angry expression, according to Hunt. “From Persian cats they get their calm, gentle nature and their love of naps and quiet time,” she says. “From Siamese cats, they get their coat coloring, playfulness, curiosity, independence and intelligence.” 

These crabby-looking cats are more on the independent side and tend to be less snuggly as a result, according to Hunt. “When they do want to snuggle, it is, of course, on their own terms,” she explains. But Warner says despite appearing angry, they are affectionate and playful. “They are known to enjoy lives in stable homes with lots of attention and contact with their owners, and are extremely content when perched in their favorite place,” Warner says. “Don’t let their face fool you as behind that stern look is a cat that’s gentle and extremely loving.”

With summer on the horizon, pet parents are planning road trips, staycations, and beach days where they and their pups can enjoy all the warm weather has to offer. There's nothing better than enjoying the sand and the surf with your best pup alongside you. But not every destination is pup-friendly.

Recently, the list of the top dog-friendly beaches in America was released. Unsurprisingly, the state with the most beaches in the top ten was California. Overall, the state has more dog-friendly beaches than any other state bordering the ocean. But there were a few surprising additions to the list.

Top 10 Dog-Friendly Beaches in the United States

There's nothing quite like taking your pup with you to the beach. Watching them joyously splash through the waves while galloping up and down its sandy shores is worth the time and effort it will take to get all of that sand out of their fur. While not all vacation-worthy beaches are dog-friendly, Beaches Everywhere just released their top destination throughout the United States where pups and their humans can get in a little R&R in the sand and sun.

It's no surprise that California beaches make appearances in the top 10. But lucky pups visiting the Golden State have three beaches to choose from in the top 10 alone: Huntington Beach, Long Beach and Carmel. Florida has the second-highest mentions, while other states like Oregon and Texas feature one-off beach locations to represent their pristine shores. However, the real surprise is the contender from Illinois.

The top 10 beaches are:

The study doesn't stop at the top 10 in the nation, though. It goes on to thoughtfully cover the 50 most dog-friendly beaches in the United States, both freshwater and saltwater, spanning about 20 states. The thorough study accounts for factors such as a welcoming environment, overall pet policies, designated pet areas, visitor popularity, and overall accessibility.

“Our goal was to help travelers easily discover beaches where dogs are welcome,” a spokesperson for BeachEverywhere said in a press release. “Many pet owners plan their vacations around places where their dogs can enjoy the outdoors with them.”

As it stands, pet travel is one of the fastest-growing areas of tourism. The industry is seeing travelers seeking destinations where they can bring their dogs along for the adventure.

“As more travelers bring their dogs on vacation, beaches that allow pets are becoming increasingly popular,” the BeachEverywhere team noted in the press release.

Other Top Beach Contenders

California doesn't just hold the most slots in the top 10. The coast-lined state has six beaches to offer dog owners, including Ocean Beach Dog Beach in San Diego, Fort Funston Beach in San Francisco, and Montara Beach in San Mateo County.

Florida sticks close with five beaches in the top 50, including Bonita Beach Dog Park in Bonita Springs, Gulside City Park in Sanibel Island and Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach.

Other coastal states on the list are Oregon, Washington, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey and Hawaii. The freshwater contenders include Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.

Before you head out to the beach with your pup, be sure to check the rules to see if you need to bring a leash or if your pup can only be there during specific hours. Some beaches also have special dog-only areas. Bring plenty of water for you and your dog. The last thing you want is your day at the beach ruined by dehydration.

Also, research whether there is any wildlife you and your pup need to avoid, and always pack out everything you bring in. It's important to follow the principles of Leave No Trace, whether your pup is accompanying you to the beach or to the river.
