Younger Cat Teaching Senior Kitty Sibling How to Make Biscuits Will Make You Melt

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 7:40am

If you’ve ever needed proof that older pets can learn new tricks and reach new levels of cuteness, this video is it! My dog Lola would absolutely lose her mind over this much feline drama in one place, but even she’d have to admit: these two cats are iconic.

On the couch, we see the younger cat in full-on biscuit mode, paws rhythmically pressing into a soft blanket. Facing the younger one is the senior kitty, sitting politely like a student on the first day of class, like he’s studying a very important tutorial.

@ken.you.n0t

why is this so cute to me 😭😭😭 #cats #orangecat #catsiblings #catsoftiktok

♬ Little Life - Robert Gromotka

He is copying the motion – a little slower, a little tentative, and completely heart-melting. The younger cat keeps kneading, totally unbothered, while the older kitty’s paws get more confident, his biscuits a little less clumsy and a lot more meaningful.

Their human sums it up with the caption: “reasons I’m crying today: my older cat has never made biscuits before and he learned how to from my younger cat.” Same, honestly. You can feel the emotion behind that line. According to PetMd,kneading isn’t just “cute cat behavior”; it’s a sign of deep comfort and safety, rooted all the way back in kittenhood, when kittens knead to stimulate milk and feel close to mom. Many cats carry that into adulthood as a self-soothing, happy ritual.

Seeing an older cat finally relax enough to make biscuits and learning how from a younger friend feels like watching healing happen in real time. This isn’t just muscle memory; it’s emotional memory being rewritten on a fluffy blanket.

There’s something beautifully role-reversed about it, too. Usually, we talk about seniors teaching youngsters how to cat properly. Here, the younger sibling is modeling softness, trust, and cozy joy, and the older guy is brave enough to try it on for himself. It’s mutual caretaking, just in paw form.

For anyone who loves senior pets, this is the good stuff: a reminder that their stories are not “winding down.” They’re still learning, still growing, still figuring out new ways to feel safe in their bodies and homes. Sometimes, all it takes is one little roommate showing them how to press a paw into a blanket and let go.

And if you’ve ever watched your own pets copy each other’s quirks – sharing beds, trailing each other to the food bowl, learning when “couch time” starts – this moment feels even sweeter. It’s not just one cat teaching another a funny habit; it’s proof that comfort, trust, and joy are contagious, one tiny biscuit at a time.

Why 'Making Biscuits' Means a Cat Finally Feels Safe

What we’re seeing on that couch is more than a cute trick; it’s a senior cat learning how to feel truly relaxed. PetMD notes that kneading (aka “making biscuits”) is often tied to kittenhood nursing and becomes an instinctive way for adult cats to create calm, relieve stress, and show contentment. When a cat who’s never kneaded before suddenly starts after watching a younger buddy, it suggests he finally feels secure enough to tap into that deeply rooted comfort behavior.

If you’ve got a shy or older kitty at home, you can help them get there too: offer soft blankets, quiet cuddle time, and positive interactions with any feline siblings. You never know—one day you might look over and realize your senior has joined the biscuit brigade, following their own little paws toward comfort.

Bearded Dragon Is a 'Cute Little Baby' Napping on Mom's Chest

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 7:33am

Parents of newborns know the stress that comes along with trying to transfer a sleeping child from a parent’s chest to the baby’s own crib or bed. One false move and you’re likely to wake your sleeping baby and face the wrath of an exhausted child. One animal lover took to social media to show that pet parents face the same battle when their furry friend, or in this case scaly friend, falls asleep on mom or dad and needs to be moved without interruption to its own sleeping spot.

In the charming video shared by @georgiespetcrew, a pajama-clad human mom can be seen gingerly attempting to stand up after her pet bearded dragon falls asleep on her. Mom slowly moves out of her chair, holding her beloved reptile safely in place, as she cautiously makes her way toward the bearded dragon’s enclosure.

@georgiespetcrew

♬ lovers’ carvings - Bibio

Mom treats the bearded dragon with the utmost care, as if moving her own human baby to its crib for the night.

“He’s just a cute little baby,” she captions the video.

Her efforts pay off, and the snoozing lizard is transferred without being woken from his sleep.

Why Bearded Dragons Make Surprisingly Great Pets

For dog lovers and cat fans, embracing a pet bearded dragon might seem like a tall order, but these reptiles are actually known to make terrific pets. They’re particularly good for first-time pet parents and families who want to dip their toe into bringing pets into the home without the higher maintenance needs of a cat or dog.

Bearded dragons, unlike many lizards, can tolerate gentle handling and often have engaging, interactive personalities, which is rare for reptiles.

Bearded dragons are not without their necessities, including specific foods, a large enclosure, and precise UVB lighting. Like the example shown in the video, bearded dragons generally enjoy hanging out on their human’s chest or shoulder, making them more interactive than most lizard types.

Quiet and not too large in size, bearded dragons do require a specific diet of vegetables and insects. With a long lifespan of 10–15 years, bearded dragons are a terrific choice for families who want a pet that can grow alongside their kids.

Golden Retriever Has Some Very ‘Strong Words’ for Her Parents After a Week Away

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 7:32am

Although it’s never easy to leave your dog behind while you go on Although it’s never easy to leave your dog behind while you go on vacation, you know just how sweet the reunion can be once you’re home.

Those full-body wiggles, wagging tails, and happy squeaks are some of the most heartwarming homecomings imaginable. But sometimes, that excitement takes a moment to catch up. And for Rosie, a young Golden Retriever, she clearly had a few things to get off her chest before welcoming her parents back.

You can watch the moment unfold in a January 28 TikTok shared by @rosiee.the.golden.

@rosiee.the.golden

When Rosie comes through the door, she doesn’t hold back. Her little barks, tiny squeals, and backward steps say a lot all at once. It looks like she’s running through a list of questions and complaints before the hugs even begin. Where did you go? Why was I left here? Did you think I wouldn’t notice?

Related: Golden Retriever Rushing to Greet Neighbors After Returning From Vacation Is Melting Hearts

But in true Golden Retriever fashion, it didn’t take long for those feelings to shift. Within seconds, her frustration melted into excitement. A happy tinkle followed, then she joyfully jumped straight into Mom’s arms. The message was clear. All was forgiven, and she was ready to pick up right where they left off.

Viewers couldn’t get enough of Rosie’s dramatic reunion.

@QtCreature joked, “Oh, she cussed y’all out. Like, don’t you leave me here again, do you hear me?!”

@toni.riedmueller added, “Rosie said I was playing with my friends! Momma!”

Meanwhile, @steel_man_of summed it up with, “She’s like I have bonded with my captors. You are traitors.”

Why Dogs May Act Differently After Boarding

Behavior changes after boarding are not uncommon, especially for social and emotionally sensitive breeds like Golden Retrievers. Time spent in a new environment, changes in routine, and separation from family can sometimes lead to behaviors such as vocalizing, hesitation, or brief anxiety during reunions. In many cases, these reactions fade quickly once dogs realize they’re back home and surrounded by their people, according to guidance shared by East Orlando Animal Hospital.

In Rosie’s case, that adjustment period was short-lived. Once she was done saying what she needed to say, she settled easily back into the comfort of familiar arms.

You can also see Rosie fully back in her happy place in a January 30 TikTok, where she’s calmly enjoying an ice snack at home:

@rosiee.the.golden

Rosie’s reunion may have started with a few strong opinions, but it ended the way Golden Retriever reunions usually do, with plenty of affection and a quick return to happiness.

Sweet Rescue Dog Displays New Toys in Window Each Day and We're Melting

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 7:10am

Most dogs love to play with toys. Whether they've got plushies, balls, ropes for tug-of-war, or stuffed animals, canines bond with their parents and fellow fur babies by playing with their treasure trove of goodies.

Nellie the rescue dog is so proud of her toy collection that she shows off a different toy for her neighbors to see on a daily basis.

In the TikTok from @nellies_world_, the adorable white dog brought a yellow, cylinder-shaped toy and placed it on the windowsill next to a cute stuffed animal and dental chewing bone. Nellie looked out the window to see if anyone was around to enjoy her little exhibition.

"Every day she chooses a few of her toys to display in the window... Here are her choices today!" the onscreen text read, with the caption adding, "Hard at work again today for the display."

"Good line up, Nellie," her mom raved, noting each selection. "We have her pajama bear, we have her Poppi, and we have her little dental bone. Really nice."

Nellie's mom picked up the Poppi plushie to show it off on camera, but the canine cutie let her know she had to put it back in its place, almost like she was saying, "Don't mess with my arrangement!"

When asked in the comments how Nellie chooses her toys, her mom shared the precious pooch's process.

"Sometimes she rearranges during the day, so I wait til late afternoon to see what she’s settled on," her mom explained. "If she’s walking around with one in her mouth, I have a pretty good idea that she’s headed to the window with it."

Followers Praised Nellie's Creative Flair

Viewers of the video gave props to Nellie for her consistent creativity and natural gift of sharing.

"She probably set up the end caps at her retail job in another life," one noted.

"Love the pop of colors against the snow," another poined out.

"Get this girl a job at Macy's! Best window dresser I've ever seen," a fan remarked.

Otters Delighting in Snow Zoomies Makes Us Less Upset About the Weather

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 7:05am

The Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, New York was blanketed with snow last week, and according to this adorable TikTok, their resident river otters were tickled about it.

Several otters are seen having the time of their lives, sliding and tumbling in the snow together like kids, thoroughly enjoying life in their enclosure-turned-winter-wonderland.

The aquarium dubbed their play "snow zoomies," and we're mildly obsessed with it. They really do seem to be in heaven, wrestling with one another and wiggling around on their backs while the snow falls all around them.

But not all the animals there are happy about the deep freeze; another video posted to the aquarium's account rates how the different animals there enjoy the snow, and we were surprised to learn that even the penguins are happier indoors! The otters, on the other hand, scored an 11/10.

How Do Otters Survive the Winter?

As winter approaches and days grow shorter, many animals in the wild migrate south or hunker down to hibernate. But some are built to brave the cold — and the river otter is one of them. These playful, semi-aquatic mammals don’t just survive winters; they thrive in them.

River otters split their time between land and water, which might make you wonder how they manage to eat when lakes and ponds freeze over (their diets are predominantly fish). The trick is simple: most bodies of water only freeze on the surface. Otters stick close to rivers and streams, where flowing water stays open beneath the ice. When needed, they’ll even break into beaver dams or dig up hibernating frogs to find food.

Their secret weapon is their coat. Otters have dense guard hairs that repel water and a thick, wavy underlayer that traps warm air. Natural oils add another layer of insulation, creating a built-in winter wetsuit that allows them to swim and dive comfortably in icy conditions.

And thanks to their famously playful nature, winter isn’t all work. Wild otters can often be spotted slipping and sliding down snowy hills on their bellies or backs, just like the otters at the aquarium. While many animals retreat from winter, river otters stick around — a testament to their remarkable adaptations and resilience.

Storybook Bunny Looks Just Like Peter Rabbit and Has the Sweetest Trick

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 6:20am

If you told me this little rabbit hopped straight out of a storybook, I would not argue with you for even one second. This brown-and-white fluffball is giving full Peter Rabbit energy, right down to the tiny denim vest, and I am absolutely unwell about it.

In the adorable clip, sweet Reesy is perched on a kitchen counter, looking like a living stuffed animal. You can hear his mom off camera gently say, “Reesy, stand up,” and this precious baby just… does. He pops up on his little hind legs like it’s his full-time job. She asks again, “Reesy, stand up one more time,” and he does it again, like the polite woodland gentleman he is.

@bunnydayoff

I got you Reesy 🤣 #funny

The absolutely precious TikTok video was uploaded by @bunnydayoff, and the comments were exactly what you’d expect when the internet collectively loses its mind. One person wrote, “Peter Rabbit in real life.” Another said, “They’re like living teddy bears, just so unbelievably cute.” Someone else admitted, “I would absolutely die for this cutie!” And honestly? Same. Another commenter declared, “This is literally Peter Rabbit in real life,” while someone else simply said, “Absolutely obsessed.” No notes.

There is something about rabbits standing up that just sends people into orbit. Maybe it’s the tiny paws. Maybe it’s the balance. Maybe it’s the fact that they look like they’re about to politely ask for tea and a scone. Whatever it is, Reesy has clearly mastered the art of adorable.

I love when pet parents take the time to gently teach little tricks like this. It’s such a sweet way to bond, and you can tell Reesy feels safe and confident enough to show off. What an absolute cutie.

Yes, rabbits can absolutely learn tricks. They are much smarter than people give them credit for. With patience, positive reinforcement, and tiny treats, many rabbits can learn to stand, spin, come when called, and even hop through small obstacle courses.

The key is keeping training sessions short and fun. Bunnies respond best to calm voices and rewards, not pressure. And clearly, Reesy has this whole “stand up on command” thing completely handled.

7 Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds for Allergy Sufferers

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 6:10am

Having allergies can impact all areas of your life, including your ability to get a pet. But if you’re a cat-lover, it’s fair to at least wonder if there’s a chance of welcoming a feline friend into your home at some point. So if you've ever thought to yourself, "What cats don't shed a lot?" or "What cats are the best for allergies?" you're in luck because there are actually several options. To help you know what your choices are, we rounded up 7 hypoallergenic cat breeds that won't trigger your allergies, according to vets.

While these pets are often refered to as “hypoallergenic cat breeds," it's important to point out that the term isn’t entirely accurate. “No cat is truly hypoallergenic,” says Abel Gonzalez, DVM, clinical director at Dutch. "In fact, most cat allergies are triggered by Fel d 1, a protein found in a cat’s saliva and skin oils, not their fur length. Some breeds may produce less Fel d 1 or shed less, which can help certain people with allergies, but results vary by individual cat."

Of course, every pet parent will react differently to allergens, explains Aimee Warner, DVM, resident veterinarian at Waggel. For that reason, she recommends spending time with the cat you’re interested in before making a decision to bring them home with you. That way, you can see how your body reacts to them. There are also other things you can do to lower the risk of allergic reactions to animals as well. “Families with allergies should look beyond breed when they are considering getting a pet cat. Grooming, air circulation, and simply keeping certain areas of the home cat-free can make a world of difference. While a cat's breed is helpful, it is merely one aspect of living with cats and allergies.”

Our experts stress that there’s no perfect cat breed for allergies, but making an informed choice can help you find a cat that’s less likely to cause allergy flare-ups. You may even be surprised to see that a few fluffier cat breeds made the cut as well as hairless cat breeds and both big cats and smaller ones! Read on to meet all seven and find out which hypoallergenic cat might be the best match for you and your lifestyle.

7 Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds

When it comes to finding a cat that won’t trigger allergies, choosing a hypoallergenic cat breed can make a huge difference. These 7 hypoallergenic cat breeds are purr-fect for allergy-sensitive homes. With their low-shedding fur and friendly personalities, these allergy-friendly cats let you enjoy cuddles, playtime, and purrs—without the extra sneezes. What more could you want as a pet parent?

Russian Blue A cute gray cat relaxing.

The Russian Blue is a gentle, loyal and allergy-friendly cat that’s a great option for households sensitive to allergens. “Russian Blues are often better tolerated in allergy-sensitive homes because they tend to produce lower levels of Fel d 1 and have a dense, low-shedding coat,” Gonzalez explains.

This feline's signature blue-gray fur is short, dense, and surprisingly easy to maintain, making it one of the best hypoallergenic cat breeds for people concerned about shedding. “They’re a bit reserved, which makes them ideal for calmer homes,” Gonzalez adds. While the Russian Blue is naturally low-maintenance, regular brushing and routine environmental cleaning are still important to reduce allergens in your home.

In addition to being allergy-friendly, Russian Blues are intelligent, playful and affectionate with their families, forming strong bonds with their humans while maintaining a calm demeanor. So it's no shok they are a top cat breed for people to seek out.

  • Personality: Playful, affectionate
  • Weight: Unspecified
  • Lifespan: 10–20 years
Siberian A very furry hypoallergenic cat.

Don’t be fooled by the Siberian cat’s big fur: They are actually a fluffy hypoallergenic cat breed, meaning they are a good pet for allergy sufferers. “Siberian cats have thick fur that can be groomed regularly to reduce the amount of allergens that are released and they are known as one of the breeds that are most allergy-friendly because many of them have lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein than other cat breeds,” Warner explains.

However, not all Siberian cats are the same as this isn’t a fixed trait. “Each cat, regardless of breed, may have different levels of this protein,” Warner shares. "That’s why meeting a cat before official adopting it is so crucial."

Aside from them being allergy-friendly cats, these pretty felines have great personalities too. “Siberian cats are also known to be gentle,” Warner says. So, for anyone seeking cats for allergy sufferers, this breed is a top choice for singles, families, or anyone wanting a devoted companion.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Playful, smart
  • Weight: 6-12+ pounds
  • Lifespan: 11–18 years
Sphynx A hairless hypoallergenic cat with a blanket.

The Sphynx doesn’t have fur, which comes in handy if you are a want-to-be cat parent who has allergies or if you're a first-time pet owner who is allergic to eveyrthing. However, while they are considered one of the best hypoallergenic cat breeds, that doesn't mean they have zero allergins. “Allergens sit directly on their skin,” Gonzalez points out. "Because of this, regular baths are essentia as no fur doesn’t mean no allergens."

This cat is more than just a hairless cat, though. Gonzalez describes this hairless breed as affectionate and social, too. It's no wonder it's a standout cat for allergy sufferers who want a companionable, low-shedding pet.

Breed Stats
  • Personality: Loyal, affectionate
  • Weight: 6-12 pounds
  • Lifespan: 7–15 years
Devon Rex A fluffy hypoallergenic cat on a sofa.

Yana Iskayeva

Talk about a cute cat! The Devon Rex is a truly unique, allergy-friendly cat with a coat you won’t see on every feline. “With their short, fine, curly fur, Devon Rex cats shed less and may spread fewer allergens around your home,” Gonzalez says. He emphasizes that routine grooming and care are still essential to keep allergens under control.

“They’re playful, people-oriented and thrive on interaction,” Gonzalez says. This hypoallergenic cat breed is also intelligent and highly active, so it’s important to provide plenty of stimulating toys and enrichment to keep them healthy and in a good mood. For those searching for cats for allergy sufferers, the Devon Rex combines low-shedding fur with a friendly, affectionate personality, making it a top choice for families and singles alike.

  • Personality: Smart, active, mischievous
  • Weight: 5-9 pounds
  • Lifespan: 14–17 years
Siamese A short-hair cat on top of a couch.

The Siamese is known for its slinky, panther-like grace, but it also has a short, fine coat that sheds less, Warner says. “They do not necessarily produce less Fel d 1, but they will distribute less allergen throughout your house because there is less loose hair and dander,” she says.  Therefore, if you have allergies, this cat breed won't trigger you as much as other felines will.

"Their short coat also makes cleaning them easier, which reduces the amount of allergens as well," Warner points out. Overall, these popular cats are amazing to consider if you're looking into adding a furbaby to you family. And even though theor pop culture reputation shows them being aloof, they’re actually very social and love to be around people.

Bengal cats have an exotic look with a coat that mimics that of a leopard and this unique breed can also be a good fit for allergy sufferers. “Bengal cats tend to have a short, thick coat that sheds less, and many of them are self-groomers,” Warner says. “This makes them a good choice for people with allergies since there may be fewer allergens in the house.”

This allergy-friendly pet is also a quiet and curious breed as well as a devoted companion. Though, keep in mind that this specific hypoallergenic cat breed loves attention and enrichment activities, so make sure you have plenty of engaging cat toys if you decide to bring one home so they'll feel happy and loved.

This allergy-friendly cat is in the same family as the Siamese, but this particular hypoallergenic breed has a wide range of coat colors. The best part is, their pretty coats are short and sleek, making them a low-shedding cat breed. As a result, there are less allergens floating around your place.

“Cats with low-shedding coats like this one is a great pet for allerfy sufferers,” Gonzalez says. Personality-wise, Gonzalez adds that the Oriental Shorthair is very social and talkative, so you can expect to have plenty of heart-to-hearts in your future as they thrive around people.

8 Signs You Should Get a Cat, According to a Vet

Tue, 02/03/2026 - 5:10am

It's hard not to want to adopt all of the pretty cats in an ASPCA commercial, or bond with a friend's cat and instantly want your own. However, veterinarian stress it's crucial to pause before welcoming a pet to your home. Why? Since figuring out the right answer to that question can be tricky, we rounded up 8 signs you should get a cat, according to a vet.

After all, become a pet parent shouldn't be taken lightly and there are tons of things you should consider before getting a cat. "Remember, your lifestyle will shape their quality of life," points out Dr. Ambika Vaid, DVM, an integrative veterinarian and the advisor to Badlands Ranch. "If you are gone 12 hours a day, travel a lot and have other pets, these can affect a cat’s quality of life. You also have to keep in mind that cat care can be expensive and should be considered before getting a cat."

To learn more about cat ownership and if you should bring home a feline friend, Dr. Vaid shares some 8 signs you should get a cat and one sign that you shouldn't. Check them all out to determine if you are not only ready to be a first-time pet owner, but to see if a cat would feel like part of your family if you brought one home. Understanding the signs you should get a cat before adopting or purchasing one can help you avoid heartache later. Dr. Vaid shared eight things to consider before even meeting a cat that you're interested in calling your own. See if you meet most of them!

1. You’re Ready to Dedicate Time to a Pet

Yes, cats can thrive with busy humans who work outside of the home. However, they still need more than food and water throughout their lives. In fact, kitties can get bored and lonely, o one of the most important signs you should get a cat is a long-term ability and desire to put the time into caring for one.

"Although cats are independent, they still thrive on playtime and exercise," Dr. Vaid emphasizes. "Making time throughout the day for laser pointers and feather toys is a great way to bond with your cat. Along with this, medium-haired and long-haired cats have daily grooming needs to prevent matting and severe skin problems."

2. You Aren't Overbearing

If you’re thinking about getting a cat, it helps to be someone who isn’t overbearing. Cats make wonderful companions, but they’re often independent and enjoy having their own space.

"They are different than dogs as they follow their own routine and don’t always like to cuddle and sit with their owners," Dr. Vaid states. "Cats are very independent and known for taking care of themselves."

Being a calm, patient owner can make you a more responsible cat parent. It will allow your feline friend to thrive and also help them feel happy and safe no matter if you get a small cat or a big cat.

3. You Want Help Relaxing and Unwinding

Life will always be lifing, but a cat can make all the (hair)balls it throws your way more manageable. Adopting a cat isn’t just about companionship—it’s also a way to improve your mental well-being and reduce stress at home. In fact, bringing a feline friend into your life can help ease anxiety, provide emotional support, and make cat ownership a rewarding, calming experience.

"They [are] great pets but aren’t too needy or clingy," Dr. Vaid states. "Their purring and cozy naps can make your home feel like a calmer place, which is great for relaxing after a stressful day at work."

4. You Feel Lonely

How to know if you’re ready for a cat? If you’re feeling lonely, a cat can be the perfect feline friend to keep you company. Bringing a cat into your home can provide emotional support, help with loneliness, and give you the joys of cat ownership, all while building a lasting bond with your feline companion.

"Sometimes, having a cat companion is better than having another human companion," Dr. Vaid says. "If you are single by choice or have recently lost a loved one and are feeling lonely, a cat is a great pet for you. Cats are easier than dogs and a great way to ease yourself into this new type of companionship. They are grounding and can help ease loneliness just by existing."

5. You're a Patient Person

One reason you might be ready to get a cat that many people overlook comes down to your personality. Cats have their own minds and preferences, and some may seem aloof at first. Being a patient pet owner is a key trait for anyone considering adopting a cat.

"Cats can take time to warm up to new people and new homes," Dr. Vaid explains. "It can take time for a cat to fully trust their person, and having patience during this time is very helpful. If you are pushy or demanding of attention, cats will pull away."

Being patient not only helps your cat feel safe and secure, but also sets the stage for a strong bond and a smoother transition for first-time cat owners.

6. You’re Ready for Any Cat Personality

Cats aren’t one-size-fits-all—each feline friend has a unique personality. If you’re considering getting a cat, being open to different personalities is important as a cat owner.

"Some cats are easy-going, patient and low maintenance," Dr. Vaid says. "Other cats are high maintenance, sassy and full of personality. You really don’t know what personality you are getting until that cat is comfortable in your home and begins to trust you."

Being flexible and embracing a cat’s individuality helps create a strong bond between you and your cat, making the experience of cat ownership even more rewarding.

7. You Could Use Pest Control

Forget mouse traps with stale, stinky cheese. Cats are cuter and more effective at pest control. So, if you’re thinking about getting a cat, in addition to their companionship, a cat can provide practical benefits for your home, including reducing unwanted pests, making cat ownership both enjoyable and useful.

"Cats can be the best form of pest control," Dr. Vaid says. "Most people who live on farms or have barns will own cats because they will scare off bugs and mice, which some people are deathly afraid of. If you live in an area that has mice or bugs, having a cat may help keep these critters out of your house."

8. You Have a Predictable Schedule

Cats have needs, but they aren't excessively needy. While having a predictable daily routine is a big plus when it comes to cat ownership, since cats are low-maintenance pets, they thrive even if you’re away for 8–10 hours a day.

"Cats need less attention than other pets, so if you have a busy schedule or are out of the house for 8-10 hours, cats can handle that well." Dr. Vaid reports. "If their litter box is clean and they have fresh food and water, they are happy critters."

The One Sign You Should Not Get a Cat

"If you need constant, obvious affection to feel connected to your pet, a cat is not a good fit for you," Dr. Vaid reveals.

It's important to know the signs you should get a cat, but Dr. Vaid says to tune in to whether attention is your love language to avoid disappointment that can affect your bond with a pet. As cuddly as cats may be one minute and as cute as they may be all of the time, cats need their space.

"Cats show their affection very subtly," Dr. Vaid says. "They may cuddle and nap with you for an hour and then vanish for the remainder of the day. This can sometimes feel like a rejection, and if you need that to feel connected to your pet, a cat is not a good fit for you."

Lady, the Dachshund, Gets Viral Doxie Cake for Her 1st Birthday and It's Everything

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 9:20pm

What a milestone to turn 1-year-old. Of course, most of us don't remember it very well, but we know it happened.

And for Lady, the Dachshund, whose mom is influencer Abby Baffoe, you know she was going to go all out for her sweet little dog.

Everyone knows that the cake is the essence of the birthday, even for dogs, and this one really takes the, well, cake (pun intended).

In the new video, Baffoe shared that multiple people tagged her about this cake, which appears to be from Cherry Treats Bakery in San Antonio, Texas, which makes custom cakes, including the most stunning recreation of the melting cake from the animated version of Sleeping Beauty.

View this post on Instagram

It was a small, exquisite cake. This one came with pink icing, which had a little icing Dachshund holding a tiny little martini glass on it, and it said, "A weenie bit older."

"Are you ready to see the cutest thing you've ever seen in your entire life?" she asked the viewers.

"I am so excited for her to try this. I'm making her a little steak tonight, and with it, she's gonna have her little birthday cake."

Sounds like a nice little birthday!

"Whoever tagged me in this cake, thank you so much because this is the best thing that I've ever purchased!" she said in the video.

@abbybaffoe

To those of you that sent me this cake thank you so much cause this is the best purchase I’ve ever made

♬ original sound - Abby Baffoe Lady, the Dachshund, Went on a Shopping Spree for Her Birthday

Of course, that isn't the only thing Baffoe did for her little Lady's birthday.

She also took her to her favorite store for a shopping spree that included a new hot dog toy, a mascara toy, bones, and of course, a new sweater in deer print (very chic this season).

But they couldn't leave without getting Lady a birthday hat! She found a birthday crown for her cake, and of course, she also needed a birthday cupcake toy.

Baffoe wrote in a text overlay on the video, "I need therapy."

Then she took her pile of stuff to the front, "Daughter's first birthday!"

Playful Golden Retriever Has the Cutest Way of Getting Pup Brother's Attention

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 8:55pm

Anyone with a sibling knows that sometimes they deserve to be messed with. As the eldest in my house, growing up, it was commonplace for my little bro to annoy me whenever he felt bored or needed attention. The sibling vibe isn't reserved for only humans, obviously, but when dogs do it, it's a lot cuter than when my brother did it!

For instance, when Golden Retriever Colin wants to play with older pup Sterling, he has to make it obvious. It doesn't matter if Sterling isn't in the mood to play because, like so many others who claim the "youngest" title, he'll just bug his big bro until he gets what he wants!

Two Golden Retrievers play with a rope toy outside.

The funny video is live footage of me and my bro... as dogs. Sterling wasn't having any of Colin's antics at first. Watch to see how this all unfolds!

@lifeofsterlingnewton

Great success 😄

♬ original sound - Sterling and Colin

"Great success," the post is captioned, and I think Sterling might argue otherwise!

Let's analyze Colin's technique since it was effective and can be used by siblings in need of attention everywhere. The young Golden Retriever gently pawed at his brother, then waited for the reaction, knowing if he gave it a beat, Sterling would cave. And, as Colin thought, that's what happened, and playtime began!

He deserves a round of applause for assessing the energy and going for it. As one fan pointed out, "This is high-level Golden Retriever activity!"

Related: Golden Retriever Gives 'No Fluffs' for Being in the Way Like a True King

The pup brothers love each other, of course, but the two couldn't be any more different. 8-year-old Sterling is calmer and a real sweetheart, while 4-year-old Colin lives up to the younger sibling hype! He's energetic and curious, and despite needing a lot of attention, he's a good boy who loves Sterling SO much.

@lifeofsterlingnewton

If you're thinking of a second dog here is your sign 😄 sound got muted earlier so reposting 😉 #goldenretrieverlife

♬ original sound - Sterling and Colin

Maybe Sterling doesn't feel like playing all the time, but having Colin around to entertain or playfully annoy him has made life feel a lot more fun.

Plus, being typical Golden Retrievers, both boys are sweet and loving and always up for an adventure. Even when Colin is on Sterling's last doggy nerve, doing this thing called life together? Worth every second.

Dancing Ostrich 'Flirts' With Mom Instead of Paying Attention in Precious Clip

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 8:38pm

Trying to get an Ostrich’s undivided attention is not for the faint of heart, according to one social media creator who is sharing a firsthand account of the lengths one Ostrich went to just to avoid listening to mom. It’s a time-honored tale most parents can relate to, though most of us are used to trying to wrangle children’s attention, not a bird’s.

Alas, this TikTok video shows that our pet children aren’t much different from our human children, and neither is particularly willing to give mom and dad their full focus and attention.

In a social media video shared by @hoofandclawranch, a playful male Ostrich can be seen prancing around his backyard.

@hoofandclawranch

Trying to get an ostrich’s attention while he’s flailing around can be difficult. This was a risky move too as they can be quite dangerous but I’ve had this boy for 5+ years now and I have a good sense on when he’s aggressive vs calm. #ostrich #farmlife #funnyanimals #exoticpets #farmanimals

♬ original sound - Hoof & Claw Ranch

“Trying to get an ostrich’s attention while he’s flailing around can be difficult. This was a risky move too, as they can be quite dangerous, but I’ve had this boy for 5+ years now and I have a good sense of when he’s aggressive vs calm,” writes one of his humans.

The camera then shows mom trying to get this fella’s attention. Rather than give mom her due, the Ostrich wiggles his head back and forth, avoiding her gaze. Seemingly out of the blue, the bird stops his repetitive motion, stands up, and walks away.

Sheesh, this guy will really do anything to avoid listening to mom.

Why This Ostrich’s Behavior Has Viewers Laughing @hoofandclawranch

During mating season we do not go into the ostrich pen on foot as the male will try to fight us. Even with our cart he will charge us and posture like he’s challenging us. They start out small and cute but they can grow to 9ft tall and 300lbs. #ostrich #farmlife #farmanimals #dinosaur #exoticpets

♬ original sound - Hoof & Claw Ranch

Charmed viewers and the video’s creator were quick to join one another in the comment section to discuss the Ostrich’s cheeky behavior. One wrote, “He’s flirting with you,” which the creator responded to by adding, “He flirts with anything that breathes.”

Another added, “He is like move out the way... I’m getting ready for Valentine’s season,” which received, “He’s ready for sure!” as a response from the video’s creator.

Wondering if the commenter who suggested this Ostrich is actually flirting might be correct? Indeed, Ostriches do utilize this repetitive back-and-forth head motion to attract females. Sometimes, the behavior is accompanied by the male Ostrich’s neck turning red.

In this case, the Ostrich’s behavior is indicative of a morning routine that both male and female ostriches may display when in the company of familiar and trusted caregivers.

'Broken and Scared' Street Dog Gets Adopted By Vets Who Treated Him and We're Crying

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 8:10pm

Niall Harbison's mission to rescue and rehabilitate street dogs through his Thailand rescue, Happy Doggo, continues to work miracles. The animal advocate regularly posts about the canines he brings to his rescue sanctuary, Happy Doggo Land, and shares stories of hope about these wonderful dogs.

Dice the Pit Bull mix is one of those dogs who got his happy ending in a very unexpected way.

View this post on Instagram

The Instagram post from @wearehappydoggo shared how Dice was discovered alone and trapped in horrible living conditions.

"We found him tied up and abandoned," the onscreen text explained as the video showed the broken-down environment Dice had to endure. "He was only a young boy."

Harbison and his team brought Dice back to the rescue's medical clinic for evaluation and treatment. The veterinarians were immediately smitten with the precious Pittie.

"As soon as our vets saw him, they wanted to help him," the story continued. "And it wasn't just his health issues."

Dice Got His Forever Family

Dice needed time for his health to improve. While under the care of his vets, the canine cutie captivated their hearts and they decided to make him a permanent family member.

"When Dice came to us, he was broken and scared," the caption shared. "He didn’t know that the lovely Dr. Singha and Dr. Kim treating him would love him so much, they would end up adopting him."

The video featured Dr. Singha and Dr. Kim smiling alongside their fur baby, who clearly brings them so much joy.

"From having nobody and being abandoned on a short chain to having his own loving family who are both vets," the caption read as the family enjoyed quality time together on the beach.

"They are now inseparable and Dice has the life he always should have," the onscreen text concluded.

Black Cat Fed up With the Snowstorm Tries To Claw His Way Out of the House

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 7:55pm

There is something about a snowstorm that makes certain cats absolutely lose their minds.

Willie, a sleek Black Cat, with very strong opinions, has apparently decided that being stuck inside during a full-blown winter storm is a personal attack. In the clip, he stands at a partially open sliding door, snow blowing in, flakes landing on the floor, and he is actively trying to claw his way outside, like he has urgent business to attend to.

@cprice.13

#snowmageddon

♬ original sound - cprice.13

The hilarious video from @cprice.13 was shared on TikTok, and you can hear his cat dad saying, “Where are you going, Willie?” while his cat mom laughs in the background. The snow is literally falling into the house, and Willie does not care. He is determined.

Related: Adorable Pug's 'Immediate No' to Going Out in Snow Is Written All Over Her Face

The comments are exactly what you’d expect. “He can’t be stuck inside with y’all anymore,” one person wrote. Another added, “He’s going outside, CLEARLY.” Someone else said, “And he’ll get upset at you when he gets cold,” which is honestly the most accurate prediction of all. And of course: “He’s got cabin fever.”

I get it. Our huge Calico cat, Elvis, is constantly looking for an escape route. She will dart toward the door like she has a flight to catch. But even she will turn right around when it is this cold and icy outside. Snow is fun in theory. Not so much when your paws are freezing. Elvis is not about that life.

Willie, however, seems ready to brave the frigid weather. You have fun with that, Willie.

Cat Parents Are Bringing the Outdoors in for Their Cats @courtneywhitford1

“We brought a pile of snow inside for my cat… and he had no idea what to do with it. Confused. Betrayed. Intrigued. A full emotional journey.” CCatTokSSnowDayIIndoorSnowCCatLifeP#PetParents

♬ This is Great, I Like It, Good Job Funny Sound Effect - Sound Effects Depot

With so many cats stuck indoors during winter, some cat parents have gotten creative. Instead of letting their kitties out into dangerous weather, they bring fresh snow inside for them to investigate.

Some put snow in a bowl and let their cats sniff and paw at it. Others spread it in a bathtub for a safer exploration zone. Reactions vary wildly. Some cats are fascinated. Others take one look and decide absolutely not. That's exactly how my kitties were when we put snow in our bathtub for them to investigate. They wanted nothing to do with it!

Whether they want to claw their way into a blizzard like Willie or just sniff a handful of snow in the tub, one thing is clear: Winter cabin fever is very real for some cats.

Huge Bulldog’s Plop Onto the Couch Could Shake the Whole House

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 7:00pm

English Bulldogs are chunky. That's a good portion of their charm: they might not be the biggest dogs the world has to offer, but they're still huge! They're wrinkly, too. Everything about them is carefree and awesome.

Some have more to give than others, it seems, like this absolute unit of a Bulldog who recently took everyone's breath away. The second he plopped down onto the couch, everybody was totally smitten:

@rhinothemerlebritishbull

Nothing stopping him now 😆😆Athlete has been activated 🏃 !!! #fyp #viral #jump #athlete #fitness

♬ original sound - Rhino 🦏

Rhino the Bulldog is definitely named correctly: he's huge, and he's kind of rhinoceros-colored, too. He's a Merle "British" (English) Bulldog, which gives him:

  • His size (English Bulldogs are about 55 pounds).
  • His wrinkles, which are everywhere.
  • His grey speckled coat.

At the beginning of the video, we can see that Rhino really engages his athletic side. He jumps up onto the sofa, sticks the landing, and performs an impressive plop to take a nap. I wish that were all I had to do all day!

Related: Rare Beagle-Bulldog Mix’s ‘Tip’ After Getting Pup Cup Couldn’t Be Better

Rhino is about 3 years old, and when he was a baby, he looked like a very squishy seal. He's always been on the bigger side, though his exact weight has never been shared.

Despite being the size of a small nation, Rhino is in perfect health. He's a happy, healthy boy who likes to take a nap after completing difficult activities: who can blame him?

@rhinothemerlebritishbull

Sweet dreams friends 😴 #viral #sleep #rhino

♬ original sound - Rhino 🦏

it's for the best that I can't squish this boy whenever I want to, because I don't think I could ever stop. He's just so darn squishy!

Bulldogs Are Bigger Than You Think

When most people think of Bulldogs, we're really not thinking of a massive dog, right? We think they're a little on the smaller side, a little more manageable.

English Bulldogs can sometimes weigh 50 pounds or more, just a little bit less than a Golden Retriever. Additionally, full-grown male Bulldogs stand about 16 inches tall at the shoulder. These dogs aren't small at all! They are:

  1. Stubborn.
  2. Affectionate.
  3. Prone to health issues.
  4. Great for snuggling.

Rhino loves to snuggle his mom and anyone else who happens to come over. One thing is for certain, though: this boy probably takes up the whole bed!

Hours-Old German Shepherd Puppy Spills All the Tea and It's Too Cute To Resist

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 6:55pm

Some puppies are born with the gift of gab. You know the ones—they make their presence known right away, and you can just tell they're going to be part entertaining and part handful (in the most adorable way).

One tiny German Shepherd puppy is among those, and she came into the world determined to leave a mark. This itty-bitty girl is mere hours old and already has a lot of opinions!

When puppies "talk" as much as this little one, they're so passionate about whatever they think they're telling us. Maybe she's spilling all the tea about her littermates, or she's just not impressed with the world she came into (same, girl, same). Take a look at our new gossip queen!

My only complaint about the video shared by @ashley_leiphart13 is that it's not longer than 33 seconds! Those precious puppy sounds, with the closed eyes and attitude for days, make my heart melt. The German Shepherd pup is sassy, spicy, feisty, and fiery, and I'll have her, thanks!

I feel for Mama pup after watching that, but at least those babies are strong and healthy—especially the enthusiastic eater (but ouch!)!

The Average Size of a German Shepherd Litter

Our little superstar is one of a few newbies who got me wondering how many puppies German Shepherds are capable of having. As it turns out, they can carry and birth 6 to 10 babies, with the average being around 8. There are always the outliers who have just 1 or as many as 15 in a single litter (yikes!), but new mamas are more likely to have 3 to 6 cuties.

As the American Kennel Club notes, factors such as the mother's age, her health, and of course, genetics all affect how many puppies she can have. Whatever the number, we do love a talkative gal with alll the tea, so the one above has our collective heart!

Arctic Fox Squawks With Excitement While Greeting His Favorite Humans

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 6:37pm

Don’t tell Aku, an Arctic Fox, he squawks like a chicken. The gorgeous white Fox was caught on video cuddling with a favorite human. Aku’s loud vocalizations are delighting viewers, who can’t help but be charmed by this canine’s sheer and utter joy while cuddling with his humans. The social media video is a testament to the various vocalizations Foxes make and what they sound like when they are completely and utterly happy.

In a video shared to TikTok, Aku can be seen cuddling on dad’s lap. Ensconced in blankets and a deliciously cozy couch, the Fox wags his tail and looks completely content as dad cuddles and dotes on him. As Aku laps up all of the attention, the sweet Fox squawks loudly for all to hear.

♬ son original - @disneyloova

A surprise to those not well versed in all things Fox, these canines are known to make a whole host of sounds, including shrill, bird-like calls. Foxes are known for their plaintive wail, often referred to as a “vixen’s scream,” which can sound like a woman screaming. This call is generally reserved for wintertime, when female Foxes call out for males. Foxes actually use a variety of sounds and calls to express different emotions, from distress to claiming territory or locating a mate.

While the sound can be alarming at first, the Fox isn’t in distress. Rather, the squawking sound is simply the animal’s way of communicating.

Charmed viewers didn’t quite know what to make of Aku’s vocal sounds. One wrote, “It’s like a dog, cat and parrot all in one.” Another took the fox’s bird-like calls as a sign of happiness, writing, “Oh, to be this happy in life. such a happy lil guy!”

“He's so cute, I really can't get enough of him,” added one more.

Rarely domesticated, Arctic Foxes are generally hard to train and can be quite destructive. Foxes mark their territory with urine, which is less than ideal in a home environment. Despite Aku’s tame nature and clear bond with his humans, he’s still a Fox. His wild nature is likely still intact, even though he clearly feels right at home in his human’s house.

Sweet Foster Dog 'Caked in Feces and Gunk' Gets First Home Bath and We're Crying

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 6:10pm

Rescue dogs often come with many health issues and emotional trauma due to neglect and poor living conditions. Animal advocacy organizations get them the medical attention they need, along with a foster home to get the love and attention they deserve while waiting for their forever family. Seasoned foster parents often handle canines with physical illnesses or injuries and strive to make these precious pooches feel safe.

Isabel Klee has fostered approximately 30 dogs with various health and behavioral challenges, and recently brought home her latest fur baby who needed extra care.

@simonsits

♬ original sound - random_stuff

Klee described Raven as an "extreme medical case" due to a "massive mass" on her back. The rescue organization couldn't give the precious pooch the attention and care she required, so Klee stepped in to foster. Raven is currently being treated for the mass while she waits for her scheduled surgery.

"She's been a total angel ever since we brought her home," Klee said in the TikTok from @simonsits as she held the canine cutie in her arms. "But she is really, really stinky."

Raven had some of her fur shaved at the vet's since it was so clustered and tangled. Klee wanted to make sure she had a deep-cleaning bath to eliminate any remaining debris.

"She is completely matted," the foster mom explained. "She was caked in feces and other gunk, so we're gonna give her a bath just so she can be a little bit more comfortable and hopefully make her feel a little better in the meantime."

Raven Changed the Water Color

Klee gently removed Raven's bandage and started the bath. In addition to giving the fur baby a good shampoo, Klee had to remove discharge from Raven's eyes. The patient pup's coat was so unkempt, the bath water turned a darker shade.

"Did you see the color of the water?" Klee asked her fiancé, Jacob, as the camera panned to the water going from clear to a grayish hue. "Can you see that?... That is crazy, from this little dog."

Related: Rescue Dog's First Beach Day After Miraculous Recovery Is Pure Joy

Klee carefully dried Raven off afterwards and praised the pooch for her calmness throughout the experience.

"She's so patient," the animal advocate remarked. "You're so pretty."

Raven performed the iconic dog shake to get rid of any excess water as Klee prepared for her next task.

"Now I have to heavy duty bleach our entire bathroom," she said with a laugh.

Raven is in wonderful hands with her foster mom and already looks like she's feeling at home.

Boston Terrier’s Curious Look Hearing Brother’s Voice for the First Time Is Pure Joy

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 6:00pm

Boston Terriers are one of life's only unique experiences. There truly is nothing like raising them, and I mean that as a compliment and an insult all at once! That puppy stage is not for the weak!

Recently, one full-grown Boston Terrier got to video chat with his new brother, though he doesn't know it yet. All he knows is that, when they put the pup on screen, he made a very funny noise. It was apparently very confusing:

@hoodsietheboston

Hoodsie’s birth mom had a litter of puppies a little over a week ago, and he is very perplexed by the squeaky sounds that his brother is making. How soon he forgets that he used to be that tiny himself! #bostonterriersoftiktok #bostonterrier #funnydogvideos

♬ original sound - Hoodsie the Boston

Hoodsie the Boston Terrier is perfect in a lot of ways, but as a New Englander, I think his name is the best of all. It reminds me of the little ice cream cups we'd get in school! Hoodsie cups aren't as good as they once were, but I still love them.

Hoodsie is the baby on FaceTime. The big brother is Sully! Their birth mom recently had another litter of puppies, and Sully's human mom loves him so much. She had to have another! Unfortunately, his little brother was a little too young to come home yet.

Related: Rescue Boston Terrier ‘Falling in Love’ With Mandarin Oranges Is a Real Head-Scratcher

Hoodsie got to meet his big brother on FaceTime, and if you don't know anything about Boston Terriers, there's one thing you can know for sure: they're noisy. He couldn't resist barking at Sully to say hello!

Sully seemed a little confused, but ultimately pretty okay with Hoodsie's barking. That was, until Hoodsie showed up at his house and forced him to play a game of bitey face:

@hoodsietheboston

Hoodsie and Sully are having a Bitey Face Battle! It involves a lot of very “interesting” sounds, likely considered normal on their home planet of Flatulus. But then Kumo lets it be known that he does NOT approve. Just another day in the sitcom that is these Pups’ lives. #bostonterrier #bostonterriersoftiktok #funnydogvideos

♬ original sound - Hoodsie the Boston

My dogs, all of whom are always playing this game. It seems like Sully has certainly met his match with Hoodsie!

Boston Terriers Are Social

This breed holds a special place in my heart, but they're also just incredibly versatile. They're a pretty small dog, and while they do love to play, they also love sleeping.

Boston Terriers thrive in homes with:

  1. Space to run or parents who can take them out to exercise.
  2. Lots of attention to go around.
  3. Comfy sun spots for napping.
  4. Siblings, whether that's humans or other dogs.

Boston Terriers love being the center of attention, so you'll typically notice a lot of attention-seeking behavior. With time and training, it gets easier! A FaceTime introduction was definitely a great start.

Golden Retriever Who ‘Boings’ Into His Sits Is the Most Excited Student

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 5:00pm

Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved dog breeds of all time. They top every list, and no matter what your living situation is, there's always going to be someone recommending that you get one.

They're really good at training, too, and they love it. Just look at this Golden Retriever, who gets so excited by his favorite training exercises that he ends up going full "boing" into his sit commands:

@bakerbarnes

We call him Boingy Boy.#goldenretriever #dogs #wholesome

♬ original sound - user21100737266

I think Summit the Golden Retriever might have been in the military in a past life. The way he boings to attention couldn't be any more perfect... Unless he added a salute. People love this for several reasons:

  • The ear flaps.
  • The genuinely good training: this is hard to do!
  • The sweet look in his eyes.

He's so happy to be executing his trick perfectly, and that's exactly what makes Golden Retrievers so special.

Related: Golden Retriever Falls in Love With a Baseball Bat and They Really Hit It Off

Summit isn't the only Golden Retriever in the house, though: he has a brother, Baker. You might have thought it couldn't get more special than the boingy boy, but you'd be completely wrong!

Baker doesn't boing, but he does love doing a little dance. He's kind of an older gentleman, but he's not going to let that get in the way of his boogey time:

Both of these boys are so special. It's so hard to pick a favorite, and mom definitely likes to pretend she hasn't!

Golden Retrievers Love Tricks

Golden Retrievers are one of the best breeds you could possibly get in terms of training. While they'll always have their ups and downs (literally every dog will), they're still some of the best! They're:

  1. Built for companionship and taking direction.
  2. Eager to please.
  3. Easy to motivate (they love food).

You can teach a Golden Retriever any number of tricks, from the basics to more advanced things. One guy even taught his pup to take selfies! Summit might not be there yet, but I think the boinging is a great trick on its own!

8 Signs Your Dog Thinks You’re Their Safe Place

Mon, 02/02/2026 - 4:30pm

There’s no denying that your dog is your devoted companion, showering you with kisses and cuddles when you need it most. But some breeds also serve as a protector to keep you safe in the face of danger—or perceived danger, like when the mailman stops by. As a pet parent that makes you feel safe and looked after. However, seeing how you have these feelings toward your dog, it’s fair to wonder if they also feel safe around you as well. Though, since dogs communicate differently than people do, figuring out how your furbaby feels can be tricky. To help you understand your dog better, we rounded up 8 signs your dog thinks you're their safe place.

There’s so much that goes into pet safety, including providing a comfortable, warm home for your dog. But safety can be emotional, too. Meaning, you provide the space for your dog to come to you when they’re feeling scared or need reassurance to show that their needs are important to them. A gentle pat or soft word when your pup is unsure can go a long way toward making your dog feel safe with you

While you can do everything to make your dog feel secure, it’s not always obvious if they truly see you as their safe place. If you’re a dog mom or dad and feel unsure, you’re not alone as dogs communicate in subtle ways. Paying close attention to your dog’s body language and your dog's behaviors can help you figure out what makes a dog feel safe and how they show that they trust you. By noticing these cues, you’ll be able to recognize the signs your dog thinks you’re their safe place and knows that you’re their source of comfort and love.

Every dog is unique, so not every pup will show all of these behaviors. Still, many pets display one or more of these signs when they think you’re their safe place. Paying attention to these cues can help you strengthen your bond. After all, seeing how your furbaby always has your back, you want to reassure them that you’ve always got their back as well.

1. They have relaxed ears around you

How do you know if your dog loves you and feels safe around you? A relaxed body language in general is a sign that dogs feel safe with you, according to Liza Cahn, DVM, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “Relaxed body language, such as soft, relaxed eyes, a low, gentle tail wag, ears held in their natural position without tension, a relaxed mouth that may be upturned slightly at the edges like a smile and a relaxed or playful body posture signal that a dog feels safe, happy and comfortable,” she says. These relaxed cues show that your dog is comfortable being themselves around you, proving that you’re truly their safe place as their pet parent.

2. They use you as a leaning post

It's no accident when your dog props themselves up against you while you’re cooking or just standing there. That lean is actually meant to be a sweet, trusting gesture. “Initiating physical contact by leaning on you or snuggling are behaviors generally associated with a strong human-animal bond,” Cahn says. When your dog leans on you, it’s a clear sign they feel safe with you and that your dog loves you. Simple moments like this helps strengthen the human-dog bond you have together.

3. You’re their shelter in a storm

Some dogs can get through storms with no issues, but plenty get freaked out by things like thunder and lightning. If your dog looks for you during thunderstorms or other “scary” moments, it's a sign that they see you as a source of safety, says Erin Askeland, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, Camp Bow Wow's animal health and behavior expert. Being there for your dog during scary moments not only strengthens a dog's trust with their owner, but also deepens the special bond you share.

4. They make soft noises

How adorable is this sign your dog feels safe with you? Vocalizations are another form of dog bonding behavior, but they often need a little decoding. “Vocalizations should be interpreted in context with your dog’s body language and can give insight into their emotional state,” Cahn says. “Sounds associated with happiness may include a soft sigh, signaling relaxation, short high-pitched playful barks or yips, or signature vocalizations like singing, talking, chirping, or yodeling, often linked to certain breeds.” These gentle noises are clear signs your dog thinks you’re their safe place and is an example you can look for that means your pup trusts you no matter if they are a big dog or a little dog.

5. You’re their favorite napping spot

Sleep is a vulnerable time for everyone, including dogs. A dog who feels safe with you will often choose to nap near you—or even on you—showing one of the clearest signs your dog thinks you’re their safe place, Askeland says. This cozy behavior is a heartwarming dog bonding behavior that signals your pup trusts you completely. Give your furry friend a gentle nuzzle or pat to reinforce that sense of emotional security.

6. They sniff you

Dogs who feel safe with someone show signs they trust you and sniffing is a classic example of how they communicate that. While it might be borderline hilarious when your dog seems intent on inhaling your pants, a relaxed sniff is actually a dog bonding behavior that shows your pup trusts you and feels comfortable around you, according to Cahn. “Dogs have an amazing sense of smell, thousands to tens of thousands of times more acute than ours, and it’s a major way they experience and navigate the world,” she explains. “When a dog sniffs you in a calm way, it often signals they feel safe enough to get close, check in, or find your familiar scent reassuring, which are all clear signs your dog thinks you’re their safe place.”

7. They have a special way of saying ‘hi’ to you

If you want to know signs your dog feels safe with you, watch for their unique greetings when you get home. Dogs who feel safe with you and are emotionally bonded will often have a special way of saying hello that they reserve just for you, according to Askeland. That might be a particular wiggle, a little dance, or even bringing you a favorite toy, which are all part of the dog-owner bond and dog bonding behaviors that show your pup trusts you.

8. They reach for you

When it comes to signs your dog loves you, one one clear dog bonding behavior involves your pup’s paws. "Using their paw to gently touch you is a sign your dog trusts you and feels safe with you," Askeland says. As a caring pet owner, you can respond by giving your pooch kind words and a gentle pet, reinforcing that sense of emotional security and strengthening the dog-owner bond.
