When we leave our pets to go anywhere, it probably feels like a whole lifetime before they see us again. Some are so heartbroken that they almost can't believe their eyes when we walk through the door. It could be a quick 5-minute errand or a 2-week vacation—it's all the same to them because they love us so much; time apart is a no-go.

Duke, the Golden Retriever, must've felt this way when his mom left for a week. The good news is, once she returned home, he forgot all about her absence and couldn't wait to smother her with kisses.

As Mom Zarah noted, "Reuniting with my Golden Retriever is the reason why I always sprint home," and as a dog mom myself, that's entirely too relatable! The final miles on the way home feel like the longest stretch of time ever because we just want to get to them ASAP. Thankfully, Duke seems to forgive Mom right away—as long as she never leaves again!

One person shared the sentiment many of us feel seeing this in writing, "This melted my heart! Nothing beats the pure excitement and unconditional love of a Golden Retriever. They really do make every day brighter."

This special boy really is Mom's little buddy. Spending time with her is better than anything else on the planet. There's nothing like the love of a dog, that's for sure, and Duke's love for Mom is a great example.

When Duke gets hurt with a boo-boo from outside, he runs right into Mom's arms so she can make it all better, and no, we're not OK after this! He couldn't be any sweeter.

In the TikTok from @bluey.chi, the precious pooch sat at a table with a very sad and dejected expression on his face. Bluey didn't appear sick or injured in any way, though the video revealed it was his heart that was hurting.

"He's been making this face ever since we got back home from the dog park," the onscreen text read. "He wanted to make new friends but got left out."

Other posts on the social media account showed how sweet, gentle and playful Bluey is, where he would clearly make a wonderful friend for any fur baby. Maybe the other dogs all knew each other and felt shy about approaching a newcomer, or it was just an off day at the park. The reason couldn't have had anything to do with the charming little Chi. Hopefully, Bluey will give the social scene another try.

As the old saying goes, "It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye."

That appears to be the case with one German Shepherd and her playful pet mamma, as the two engage in an innocent round of peekaboo.

At first, the play is gentle and sweet.

Then things get a little wild.

And let me tell you, that’s no gentle tap! In fact, I can literally hear a skull-on-skull cracking sound.

Ouch! This makes me glad to have only kitty headbutts in my life.

They’re also a good starter bird and as far as a veterinarian is concerned, parakeets are a good choice for people who are new to bird-keeping."

Another perk? "Parakeets aren’t as loud as some other birds and don’t need much space due to their smaller size," says Tara M. Harrison, DVM, professor of Zoo and Exotic Animal Medicine at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.

If you want a friendly pet bird, you'll love cockatiels! Warner notes that this breed is famous for being gentle and loving. “Many like to be handled and will perch on a shoulder or want to be with humans,” she says. “They are expressive but not demanding, and their whistling and gentle noises are easier to tolerate than those of louder birds.”

Though, if you decide to get one of these birds, make sure you have time to play with them and give them attention so they feel loved. "As pets, cockatiels need a lot of social interaction and mental stimulation," Warner shares. On top of that, they require more space as well to be happy. "Since they are larger than parakeets, they will need a little more room than a smaller bird would," Harrison says.

One more option if you’re looking for a pet bird? A canary! “These birds are excellent for those who like to observe rather than touch,” Warner says. These small, colorful pet birds are great companions and are known for their beautiful singing. “They are kept for their singing abilities and require a routine and a peaceful environment,” Warner notes.

Another advantage? “Because canaries are small, they don’t need a lot of space,” Harrison points out, making them ideal easy-to-care-for birds. Overall, canaries are among the best birds to have as pets for anyone seeking a low-maintenance and entertaining companion.

If you've ever asked yourself, "What birds make the best pets?" a finch is one of them! Finches are social, active birds and are considered some of the best birds to have as pets for beginners. “They are active, entertaining to watch and easy to care for,” Warner shares.

However, if you want to become a pet parent to one of these cute animals, make sure you have enough room for them. “These pet birds require flight space and should be kept in groups so that they can display their natural behaviors.” While they like to have a lot of flight space, Harrison points out that they don’t require as much space as some larger birds, making them ideal beginner-friendly pet birds.

The African Grey is a medium-sized parrot that loves to chatter, so if you're looking for a bird that can talk, this is the pet for you. “African Greys are excellent talkers and bond strongly with their owners, but they require a tremendous amount of time, stimulation and consistency,” Warner says. “These birds are best suited for those with experience handling birds before, so their needs are met.” 

Another reason these birds make the best pets according to vets is because these parrots have a long lifespan, and can live up to 60 years. "If you get one of these pet birds, know you are making a commitment," Harrison points out.

Lovebirds are small parrots with bright, colorful feathers, and one of the best birds to have as pets. “They are not great speakers, but can whistle or copy some whistle-type noises,” Harrison says. "Male lovebirds may be more likely to talk than females," she adds. 

Warner calls this breed “playful and loving,” noting that they are great birds to have as pets as they love to interact with humans or other lovebirds alike. “They are extremely social birds and cannot be left alone for too long,” Warner says. “They are not suitable for people looking for a low-maintenance companion.”

Zeus may be a big Cane Corso, but he’s a sweet softie at heart. This big dog is the subject of one of the most charming social media videos we’ve seen as of late. That’s because Zeus is a new dad, and he’s making sure to check on his puppies to ensure they’re safe. This big guy is even so cautious about where he walks, making sure he doesn’t do his babies any harm, a true testament to the sweetness of this gentle giant.

In a social media video recently making an appearance in our feed, Zeus can be seen entering the feeding area for his litter of puppies. This breed of dog is known to be protective and loyal, making them a top choice for family dogs. Here, Zeus is putting his family first and protecting his babies one by one. Large in stature with an alert expression, Cane Corsos are an intimidating breed. Their imposing demeanor is often a first line of defense, but the dog’s protective nature also makes them deeply loyal to both pups and humans.

Naturally assertive and confident, humans may find they answer to their Cane Corso, not vice versa, if they are easily intimidated by the dog’s commanding presence. At heart, however, these dogs are protectors who are endlessly loyal.

Influencer Abby Baffoe recently went through this experience, having just returned from a trip to Florida, only to leave for another trip to London the next day.

Her Longhaired Dachshund, Lady, was not too happy about it, and in this new video, she decides to climb into her mom's giant suitcase.

She situates herself right between some sneakers and a Louis Vuitton case. Then she starts to give her the guilt eyes.

Obviously, Baffoe had quite a strong reaction to this and screamed into the camera.

She wrote on the video, "When your dog pulls out this move right before you have to travel and makes you feel like the worst person ever."

Anyone who has ever loved a Golden Retriever already knows they don’t just live in your house. They live in your story. This sweet Golden Retriever named Beau didn’t just pose for cute photos. He helped his dog parents build their entire family from the very beginning.

Possums aren’t the only ones who “play possum.”

In a hilarious TikTok clip, Sully, the Boston Terrier, feigns death in an attempt to avoid playing with his younger sibling.

A Closer Look at Playing Possum

The term “playing possum” means pretending to be dead or unconscious, inactive, so you don’t get bothered or attacked.

It comes from actual possums, who will literally go limp and act dead when they’re scared. Upon encountering the apparently dead animal, predators often lose interest. It’s a survival trick!

The official name for playing possum is thanatosis, and it's a strategy also employed by various snakes, birds, insects, and fish. And as we now know, Boston Terriers!

I have to admit, this pup really has the possum thing down cold! It really seems like this is an innate behavior for Sully.

Sully and Hoodsie are too funny! I'd play with these two anytime. And who wouldn’t?

Boston Terriers are friendly, affectionate, and sociable dogs. They are excellent, gentle family pets who typically get along well with children, strangers, and other animals. Their playful, downright clownish personalities make them perfect companions.

The precious video was shared by @devonrex_minskin_kittens. In the clip, the kitten’s mom cradles the small Devon Rex while introducing her as Dalia, affectionately known as Dudu. They have to be flexible and make allowances for each other.

In the TikTok from @Leia.the.golden, Daisy was at the top of the stairs watching her mom place treats on each step as a way to motivate her to walk down. The precious puppy looked at the little morsel and was intrigued, yet intimidated by how to lower herself to get it. She took a few steps back before giving it another try.

The camera panned over to Leia, who stood at the very edge of the steps with a large plastic ball in her mouth. The gorgeous Golden looked ready to bound down the stairs to get playtime going, but was obviously being held up by her little sister's lessons.

"Trying to teach our new puppy how to walk down the stairs but her older sister has other plans," the onscreen text read, with the caption adding, "Ball is life."

Leia seemed ready to break into a run at any moment so that her ball could start getting tossed around. She clearly wasn't thrilled with the delay, especially because of a task she learned how to do years ago.

At What Age Can Puppies Use Stairs?

Puppies are notoriously clumsy in their early months of life and haven't developed solid coordination skills. They get stronger as each week passes and learn more about gravity and spatial awareness with time.

These little fur babies are usually ready to face the steps challenge at approximately 12 to 16 weeks with parent supervision, depending on their size and health. In the meantime, pet parents should use baby gates or other barriers to prevent any unmonitored attempts.

Hopefully Daisy's lesson didn't last too long and Leia got to play fetch to her heart's content.

It's kind of surprising that Blue, Bonnie, and Boone don't have more followers. After going viral several times over, the trio of Golden Retrievers continues to show off the close bond. I'm sure at least one of the three will lose another ball to the oven again at some point, so Mom should stay on alert. If she doesn't, Blue has no issues with giving another dramatic performance to get that thing out. On January 30, TikTok user @lisy.tran shared a video of her adorable Maltese dog, named Leo, who proves that small packages can be underestimated. In Leo's case, he looks like a quiet, tiny pup who would be far easier to manage than a human toddler, but once he's awake, it becomes clear that's very much not the case. 

In this clip, Leo's mom jokes that she added a dog to her family instead of human kids because she doesn't want to deal with the tantrums. But little did she know at the time that this Maltese's cranky tantrums could easily rival a human 2-year-old.

Little, forceful barks, full wagging of the tail, bouncing on spot, there's no missing this sweet dog full-on yelling at his mom. For what? Who knows. But he's going to keep you on your toes until you figure it out.

Maltese Dogs Have Fun Personalities

Leo may be small in size, but you can't tell him that because he won't believe you; he's a Maltese. According to experts, these dogs, part of the toy group, are known for being playful and fun. 

The American Kennel Club notes that the Maltese can be described as "playful, charming, [and] gentle," and are at the very top of the "Affectionate with family" scale. They're also really good at being an "alert watchdog," the site explains, because these pups are fearless as well as charming and stubborn, too, which is quite the interesting mix. 

And watching Leo being hilarious and playful, we don't doubt that for a second.

Sometimes, we connect with exactly the right dog for our family when we decide we're ready for them and research different animal rescues and breeds... and sometimes, the dog we're meant to have falls right into our laps when we least expect it.

Fortunately, when Blu the Pit Bull ended up in his new mom's life, she was ready for the challenge of welcoming a new member to her family, and from what she's shared so far, he truly could not be happier.

On Tuesday, February 3, @ty.teeee on TikTok shared what happened when she realized that a dog had been abandoned: She decided to take him in, of course.

He must be a good judge of character, because as soon as she stopped the car, he looked hopeful, wagging his tail with all his might. Somehow, he just knew that this was going to lead him to the home he so desperately needed.

He didn't know it yet, but that would be his last day on the street, and now, he's living happily ever after.

Blu Seems Really Happy in His New Home

Since taking him in, Blu's new mom has been all about sharing his journey in his new home, and he seems to really be comfortable there. After he had some time to settle in, she shared another update, saying that so far, he's a "great dog." I knew it just by looking at his precious face!

She shared that she had driven past him hanging out in the same spot for three days, and she knew that she couldn't do it again, so she decided in the moment to take him in.

In every single video that she has shared of this sweet baby so far, his tail is wagging away and he looks happy as can be, so it seems like Blu really did finally find the home he was looking for.

There is nothing like a puppy experiencing snow for the first time, and of course, for this foster Pit Bull puppy named Piglet, it is extra special.

In a new video from the account @we.three.pitties, which features the journey of a family who fosters Pit Bull puppies, we see Piglet, the pup, frolicking in the snow in his backyard.

He seems to love it, as he runs back and forth and is genuinely curious about this cold, white stuff, giving it lots of smells and trying to play with it.

The male puppy is their first foster of 2026.

In another video, his mom explains that he has a spicy alter ego named Pork Chop. Pork Chop loves to play, chew, bark, and climb on tables (and sometimes poop in the house, unfortunately!).

We also found out in another recent video from the account that Piglet had a rough start.

His mom explained that he was found in someone’s front yard, all by himself, and with a low body temperature.

When he arrived at the shelter, he required lots of fluids, as he was a little weak.

But he has recovered now, having a great time at his foster home and experiencing lots of adventures.

He also loves to lie on heating vents and soak up all the warmth.

With all these videos of dogs frolicking in the snow, we have to ask if they are OK in these low temperatures.

For the most part, the answer is yes.

Pit Bulls can be in the cold, but not for too long, under 45 degrees Fahrenheit, according to VetsExplainPets.com.

 With their short coats and lack of undercoat, they are more prone to health issues from the cold than other breeds.

But a little session in the snow here and there is fine, especially if they are having fun like Piglet.

There are bad haircuts. There are “I let my cousin try something” haircuts. And then there is this.

One very fluffy gray, mixed-breed dog (possibly with some Poodle or Doodle in the family tree, because that coat is doing the absolute most) is going viral after his humans shaved just his head at home… and stopped there. The result? A teeny-tiny head perched on top of what appears to be a walking faux-fur beanbag chair.

One viewer pleaded, “Tell them no. You can’t take this joy away from the world.” Another asked the only logical question: “What in the Beetlejuice is going on here?”—a reference to Beetlejuice and its famously tiny-headed character named Bob.

And honestly? The comparison is not unfair. The proportions are giving “Bob the shrunken head, but make it fluffy.”

Other comments were just as unhinged in the best way:

That last one is actually… a little bit valid.

Because here’s the thing about super fluffy dogs—especially Poodle mixes and Doodles. That dense coat can get matted fast. When matting happens around the face, it can trap moisture and debris, and even cause skin irritation. So yes, technically, shaving the face can provide relief.

But shaving only the face?

That’s how you end up with a Beanie Baby head glued onto a life-size stuffed animal.

Let’s talk gently and with love here.

Home dog grooming sounds simple. You buy clippers. You watch two YouTube videos. You think, “How hard could it be?” And sometimes? It’s totally fine for light trims or maintenance brushing.

First, matting isn’t always visible on the surface. A dog can look fluffy and soft, but underneath that top layer can be tight, painful mats close to the skin. Shaving unevenly can leave some areas short and others packed with tangles. That’s uncomfortable and tricky to fix.

Second, dogs move. A lot. One wiggle mid-clip and suddenly you’ve carved out a very committed bald spot.

Third, coat balance matters. Professional groomers shape the head, body, and legs so everything looks intentional. When you only shave one section, you create… well. This.

I can certainly relate to Auntie Posey not wanting to play. When I’m done with work and have completed my workday and tasks around the house, all I want to do is sit and relax for a bit. I’m with you, girl! But really, what is Auntie Posey’s excuse? She doesn't strike me as a working dog. (Sorry, Aunt Posey, just sayin'.)

Are Pugs Friendly?

With round, flat faces and short little snouts, Pugs may appear a little rough around the edges, but they are actually friendly, affectionate dogs. (Well, maybe not Auntie Posey!) They are known for their gentle nature, making them good with kids and other pets. 

Pugs enjoy human companionship and often form strong bonds with their pet parents. Their playful, sociable disposition makes them excellent family pets, and they are often described as having light-hearted, humorous temperaments.

Hopefully, Auntie Posey will come around soon enough to enjoy some time with Pompey. This little guy is just the cutest thing and deserves some serious playtime.

Anyone who happens to be a parent to a dog who seems to be always begging for food — yours, their own, or both — should at least take comfort in the fact that they are not alone. Trying to get more food and treats out of the human in their lives is a very typical doggy pastime, after all.

It's hard to say if any dog can get their point across quite as well as the Mini Goldendoodle below, though. Just listen to those howls!

According to Louie's mom, he's already had his dinner, but far be it from him to let that stop him from begging for another.

Even just being reminded that he already ate is offensive to him. That is such a sassy howl!

No word on whether or not his mom gave in, but who could blame her if she did?! It has to be hard to say no to that face.

Why Dogs Beg for Food — Even if They're Not Hungry

Louie was asking for second dinner in the video, implying that he's already eaten first dinner, but many dogs won't let that pesky little fact stop them from trying to get more food. But if they've recently eaten a meal and are still begging for food, it doesn't necessarily mean that your dog is still hungry.

As PetMD points out, there are a lot of reasons to explain the begging behavior. The site claims that since dogs love food so much and their sense of smell is so strong that they simply can't help themselves. They might be stuffed, but there's always room for more when you're a dog, apparently.

Other dogs might just want your attention and have found that if they beg for food, they get it (even if it's not the good kind of attention).

If you'd like to put a stop to this behavior ASAP, there are a couple of things you can try. Next time they beg, ignore the behavior entirely. You can also start eating in one designated area and make sure it's not near where the dog eats — that way, no boundaries are crossed.

Now, if you ask me, Louie needs a treat or something.

If ever there was a job with the position as "Resident Smile Maker," a dog would be the top candidate for sure. They're rarely ever trying to make everyone say, "aww," but that's exactly what they end up doing—so don't even bother applying!

Loki, the Golden Retriever, is the pup for the job, having proven his unconditional love and steadfast loyalty to his humans, particularly the newborn baby. Though, they're going to have to work out an agreement with the baby's blanket, because that's Loki's "baby!"

To prepare Loki for a newborn baby, Mom and Dad offered the good boy the baby's hospital blanket. Since it had the little one's scent all over it, Loki could connect the comfort of that blanket with her once she came home. As you can see, he took the responsibility of caring for the treasured blanket and the infant seriously!

With his first day on the job, he wasn't about to fail and showed his parents he not only approved of a new baby, but quietly, he promised to be as gentle with her as he was with the blanket. The sweet video is definitive proof we don't deserve dogs!

Loki and Cosmo Are the Best Dog Siblings to Their Human Kids

As the oldest, Loki knows it's a great TK, but his bond with the baby has only strengthened over time. Golden Retriever brother, Cosmo, joined the gang shortly after the baby's birth, so they're all growing up together. It's been two years since Loki's blanket post, and he's about to do it all over again.

A breeder dog is a dog used for producing litters, often in commercial breeding operations. Sadly, some are discarded when they are no longer considered profitable. Many of these dogs have spent their entire lives having puppies with very little socialization, stability, or affection. Some have never lived in a home. Some have never been someone’s “baby.”

That’s why stories like hers hit so hard.

When breeder dogs are rescued, they often need patience, gentle handling, and time to learn that humans can be safe and kind. But once they settle in, they can be incredibly loyal, affectionate, and grateful in ways that honestly make you rethink everything.

If you want to help pups like her, consider adopting from a rescue that specializes in former breeder dogs or donating to your local shelter. Even fostering can change a life. Sometimes, all it takes is one soft landing and a group of people willing to cover a dog in pink stickers and tell her she’s perfect.

Because she always was.
