I have seen cats hitch rides on dogs, humans, and even the occasional robot vacuum, but apparently we’ve been overlooking an excellent form of feline transportation this entire time: pigs. Why walk across the porch on your own four perfectly functional legs when your pig sister can take you?

That’s apparently Phoebe the tabby cat‘s philosophy. In an adorable clip, she’s sitting comfortably on the back of her pig sister, Winnie, as casually as if she ordered a ride and Winnie pulled up to the curb. Except this particular Uber has four legs, a snout, and occasionally oinks.

The adorable clip was shared by the TikTok account @why_winnie, which explained that Winnie and Phoebe really are best friends.

Winnie is also best friends with Phoebe’s brother, Jack Jack, and apparently both cats receive the “piggy back treatment.”

Their family describes Winnie as a “little sour patch pig” because she can be a bit of a bully with everyone except her two feline besties.

Phoebe certainly doesn’t appear concerned.

“That’s the most chill pig and cat I’ve ever seen,” one person commented.

“Country Uber,” joked another.

Exactly.

“Piggyback rides for kitties. Omg, this is so precious,” another viewer wrote.

Someone else pointed out just how unusual the arrangement is: “Their friendship is the cutest! It’s not every day you see a kitty cat getting a piggyback ride on a piggy.”

But one comment took this ridiculously cute friendship and made me emotional.

“They find each other in every lifetime.”

Phoebe may primarily be occupied with securing rides from Winnie, but cats have a long history of making themselves useful around farms.

Cats are natural hunters, and some farm cats help control populations of mice and other rodents around barns and outbuildings.

In fact, some animal shelters and rescue organizations have working cat or barn cat adoption programs specifically for cats who may not thrive as traditional indoor companion cats. These programs can place cats in barns, stables and other appropriate properties where they can have shelter and care while putting their natural mousing abilities to work.

That doesn’t mean farm cats should simply be left to fend for themselves. They still need regular food, fresh water, appropriate shelter, veterinary care, and protection from dangerous weather and other hazards.

And then there are farm cats like Phoebe, who appear to have taken on an entirely different role.

She is not working transportation.

She has outsourced transportation.

When you bring home a puppy, it’ll take a few weeks for them to settle in. If you already have a dog, something else needs to happen: they need to learn where they fit in the hierarchy. They’re going to try to impress their siblings and make them think they’re cool!

That’s exactly what’s happening to one Golden Retriever puppy right now! She’s young enough to be mostly stuck in her pen, but the other dogs in the house can come over and visit. When they do… She always falls head over heels:

This puppy is at Suncoast Goldens, which explains the pen. When you have several puppies in one place, it’s a terrible idea to let them wander around freely; plus, pens prevent mixing litters if there is more than one at once. Luckily, though, she can see out, and others can peek in.

When the big Goldens approached her, she was just like, “Be cool, be cool…” Unfortunately, when you’re a baby who hardly has control of your limbs, it’s way too easy to fall on your tail. She just got too excited, but hey! They get it. They were puppies once, too.

The puppies mostly stay inside, especially when they’re really little, but the big dogs have more freedom. They have a lot of land, so their Goldens get to go out and enjoy golden hour often:

The puppies get to go outside sometimes too, but when you live with as many puppies as these grown-up dogs do, you’re going to need some time away. Luckily, that grass looks perfectly cut, and they’re having the time of their lives running through it! No ticks here!

Why Are Puppies So Clumsy?

The first few months of any puppy’s life are spent doing approximately four things:

• Training them.
• Watching them sleep.
• Trying to keep stuff out of their mouths.
• Picking them up and going, “Oh!” when they inevitably fall again.

It seems like everything is an excuse for puppies to tumble. They don’t get hurt often, by some miracle, but it’s not for lack of trying!

Puppies grow much faster than humans, and their developmental milestones occur sooner. They start walking within weeks of being born. It takes us months, if not a year or longer! Puppies’ bodies are constantly growing.

Their brain moves too fast for their limbs to keep up at first. Their coordination is off, and it’ll take a while to build it up. All you can do is encourage them to slow down and take their time. Try not to leave them unsupervised for very long, either; you never know when trying to impress the big dogs will end with a fall!

In the TikTok from @humanebroward, Skywalker sat in his kennel and sweetly stared into the camera. The pretty Pointer mix was obviously adorable, yet what stood out more than anything were his frosty blue eyes.

Shimmering with an icy, almost glasslike clarity that catches the light, the precious pooch’s eyes were a rare, cool blue color that radiated a mystical vibe with every look he gave.

“He’s definitely one of a kind!” the caption raved. “Our Purina Pet of the Week is a stunning 1-year-old Pointer mix who may just have the most mesmerizing eyes in the shelter! One look into those beautiful eyes and you’ll be completely smitten.”

Shelter staff members felt the fur baby was made for the spotlight and arranged for him to appear on a local news station in the hopes of finding him a forever home. Skywalker was completely camera-ready and won over viewers in his television debut.

Skywalker Has a Puppy-Like Spirit

The 1-year-old pooch is still enjoying his puppyhood and loves to play. After a good workout, Skywalker turns into a total love bug and enjoys cuddling with his loved ones for some important snuggle time. The friendly fur baby is also gentle and minds his manners.

“When it comes to treats, Skywalker is a gentleman,” the story continued. “He takes them gently and is always happy to show you just how treat-motivated he can be.”

Skywalker does well on a leash and loves to explore, take car rides, and be with his people. All he needs is a family to open their hearts and give him the chance he deserves.

Some of my favorite dogs are the ones who look like bears. That doesn’t have to be just big dogs, either: I’ve seen plenty of tiny dogs who look like bears, too! I will admit that I’m partial to a big dog, though… I like them to be bear-sized as well!

One Newfie-Doodle is checking all of those boxes. He wanted to go for a walk recently, and I couldn’t help but think that he’s just like a bear, begging to return to the forest. He might not be able to survive in the wild, but he looks like he belongs there:

Shannon Gillespie has two Doodles: this Newfie-Doodle, George, and a Labradoodle named Howie. The two of them get along great, but George is the bigger of the two. Howie is a standard Labradoodle, so he’s not small, but he’s certainly not half Newfoundland.

George is a very active boy. Whenever he can, he loves to spend time outside, frolicking through the outdoors like a bear in the forest. In another life, that’s where he’s meant to be! In this life, though, he has a blast playing and then going inside and being pampered by his mom.

What Are Newfie-Doodles Like?

George is endlessly entertaining for everyone around him, including his brother. The two Doodles have similar energy levels; of the two of them, George and his Newfoundland side are probably the “lazy” one!

This is especially true in regard to fall plants. That’s because some of the most popular autumnal plants that come out this season may actually cause harm to your pet if they eat them. Knowing which toxic fall plants you need to protect your dog or cat from may help you avoid a medical emergency or worse.

To learn more about toxic fall plants, we spoke with Dr. Veronica Villanueva, a veterinarian and the medical director at VEG ER for Pets in Anaheim Hills, California. Below, Dr. Villanueva explains why the fall flora may be especially dangerous for pets, three common toxic fall plants for pets every owner should know, the signs and symptoms of plant toxicity, and some nontoxic fall plants for pets that you can enjoy.

With this information, you and your fur baby can stay focused on the fun parts of fall and avoid any costly emergency trips to the vet.

Why Fall Flora Can Be So Dangerous to Pets

“Fall brings new plants, flowers, berries, bulbs, seeds and fallen leaves into our pets’ environments,” Dr. Villanueva says. “Curious dogs and cats may chew seasonal arrangements, investigate garden beds, or eat plant material found during walks or hikes. Some plants contain toxins that can affect the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, heart, kidneys, liver or bone marrow.”

The Most Common Toxic Autumn Plants and Flowers

Below are three common fall plants that are actually toxic to dogs and cats.

1. Autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale)

First up is autumn crocus, a plant Dr. Villanueva considers to be one of the most dangerous plants in the fall for pets.

“It contains colchicine and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, bone marrow suppression, organ failure and death,” Dr. Villanueva warns. “Signs may be delayed, so suspected ingestion is an emergency.”

2. Chrysanthemums, aka mums (Chrysanthemum species)

Next up? Chrysanthemums (aka mums, a seasonal staple on many porches). While they may look darling sitting outside during the fall months, keep your pet away from these beauties.

“These popular fall flowers are mildly to moderately toxic to dogs and cats. Ingestion may cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of coordination. Contact with the plant may also irritate the skin,” Dr. Villanueva says.

3. Cyclamen (Cyclamen species)

Cyclamens are another type of plant that are popular in the fall that you will want to steer clear of with your pet.

“Cyclamen contains irritating saponins. It commonly causes drooling, vomiting and diarrhea, but consuming a large amount, particularly the tubers or roots, can result in abnormal heart rhythms, seizures or death,” Dr. Villanueva says.

Symptoms of Plant Toxicity in Dogs and Cats

Dr. Villanueva says that signs of plant toxicity will depend on the type of plant and the amount consumed, but potential symptoms of plant toxicity in cats and dogs may include:

• Vomiting, diarrhea or loss of appetite
• Drooling, excessive salivation or foaming at the mouth
• Lethargy, weakness or changes in behavior, such as confusion or irritability
• Trembling, muscle tremors or seizures
• Difficulty breathing, changes in heart rate, pale gums or changes in the appearance of the pupils

“If you see or suspect that your pet has eaten or come into contact with a toxic plant, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Immediately move your pet away from the plant and safely remove any remaining plant material from their mouth,” Dr. Villanueva says. “Call your emergency veterinarian immediately. Delaying treatment can make some toxic exposures more dangerous. If you take your pet to an emergency veterinary hospital, bring a photo of the plant, any product labels, poison control case numbers, and as much information as possible about when and how the exposure occurred.”

Pet-Safe Fall Plants for Your Yard and Porch

Pet-safe plants Dr. Villanueva recommends for fall gardens and arrangements include:

• Sunflowers
• Asters
• Garden snapdragons
• Calendula/garden marigold
• Pansies

However, it’s important to remember that just because a plant is “pet-safe” doesn’t mean your pet should necessarily chow down on it.

“These plants are generally considered nontoxic to dogs and cats, but ‘non-toxic’ does not mean they should be eaten,” Dr. Villanueva explains. “Any plant material can cause digestive upset, and pesticides, fertilizers, mold or decorative wires may create additional hazards.”

I don’t think I was prepared for a 16-day-old Spectacled Owl to look this much like something Jim Henson personally designed, but baby Kleenex has completely won me over.

Kleenex is brand-new, impossibly fluffy, and wearing the wonderfully confused expression of a creature who seems surprised to have arrived on Earth. His oversized dark eyes sit inside a pale, fuzzy face, while the rest of him looks like a tiny Muppet made of cotton balls and owl parts.

He’s 16 days old.

That fact makes everything cuter in my opinion.

The video seems to have been filmed while Kleenex is being cared for by someone experienced with birds, and he seems perfectly content, looking like the world’s smallest fantasy creature.

One comment immediately compared him to a Jim Henson puppet, and I genuinely can’t unsee it. Another declared they’d go to war for baby Kleenex.

Same. No follow-up questions.

There’s something about owls that has always felt a little magical to me, anyway. When I was a kid in Northern New Mexico, I had the chance to help release an owl after it had been rehabilitated. I still remember watching it return to the wild. It’s one of those childhood moments that stays perfectly preserved in your brain.

Sometimes I wonder about the owl now. Did it live a long life? Did it have babies? Could its grandchildren be flying around Northern New Mexico today?

I’d like to think so.

Kleenex brings that feeling right back, although at this stage, he looks considerably less like a silent nighttime hunter and considerably more like he should be giving advice to the hero in an ’80s fantasy movie.

When I think of cats with big paws, my mind immediately goes to lions. Then, like any reasonable person would, I think about the closest you can get to a lion in your house: a Maine Coon! As far as domestic cats go, Maine Coons certainly have the biggest paws. Right?

The HolistiCats Cattery is home to Pancake and his massive, mega-biscuit making paws. As you can see, he clearly thinks he runs the place! Look at him, getting held like a baby while he makes those big biscuits. He wouldn’t survive even a minute on the streets.

In the TikTok from @frankieinthepines, the pretty puppy was in the front seat of the car staring at a water bottle and a to-go soda beside her in a pair of cupholders. Though there were two beverages sharing her space, Frankie clearly had a bone to pick with the soda and didn’t hold back.

Lyss the Paw Fairy goes around to shelters in the Los Angeles area and takes videos of dogs. She hopes that posting them will help find some of them homes, and it certainly does help! The more people view them, the more potential adopters these dogs have.

Odin was suffering from kennel stress. When she got there, he’d been in the shelter for a month, and he was just completely devastated. He was also on the euthanasia list: he didn’t have long left to find a home. Eight years of loyalty and his life was boiling down to nothing.

I have 2 senior dogs: 11 and 7. I couldn’t imagine surrendering them for anything. While we don’t know exactly what Odin and Margaret’s circumstances were, and sometimes surrender is the most humane option, it’s still so sad. Pups deserve to spend their golden years in peace!

Senior dogs are harder to care for than younger ones. They take more time, effort, and money. They start needing more help as they get older, and for a lot of people, it’s just not something they can or are willing to handle. Senior dogs are surrendered because of:

• Medical issues that pop up.
• Lethargy, which can make them seem less “fun.”
• A desire for a new puppy.
• A lack of time to dedicate to caring for them.

It’s awful and sounds so unfair, especially if they’ve been with you their whole lives. In a lot of cases, they’re surrendered unnecessarily, but sometimes it really is the best thing the family could’ve done for the dog.

I try not to judge anyone too harshly. Odin got the loving home he deserves for his golden years, and that’s all that matters to me. I hope that Margaret is next!

A leopard spotted two honey badgers foraging and made a decision they would almost immediately reconsider.

Two honey badgers were walking in the Sabie Riverbed in South Africa, and the big cat moved towards them. However, the moment the leopard got close, the entire encounter changed.

The remarkable footage was filmed by Mark Kaplan on the S30 road in South Africa’s Kruger National Park and submitted to Latest Sightings. According to the account of the sighting, Kaplan and his friends had already spotted the leopard before it headed toward the river.

The Calculation That Went Wrong

The leopard approaches the honey badgers with an overconfident posture. One big cat and two honey badgers—the math seems obvious until it isn’t. The honey badgers noticed the cat’s presence, but they didn’t scatter. Instead, they turned and charged directly at the leopard.

In the TikTok from @juliatforr, the puffy-haired pooch had clearly been dozing and tried to get her bearings after a solid sleep.

“Did you just wake up from your nap?” her mom asked as Rue gave her a sleepy-eyed stare. “Seems like it was a good one.”

While her drowsy gaze was adorable — and totally relatable — Rue’s wild and wispy coat was the attention-grabber. Obviously overdue for a haircut, the pretty Poodle mix’s free-flowing, airy curls spilled out in all directions like a fuzzy cloud. Her thick, tousled, and uneven layers of fur piled on top of one another looked like a giant dollop of whipped marshmallow cream.

“Girl needs a trim,” the caption noted.

Followers fell in love with the fluffy fur baby and pointed out the sluggish stare amidst the head-turning ‘do:

• “This is my guilty pleasure, letting my mini Poodle go a little longer between cuts just so I can see the wild bed head,” one admitted.

How Often Should Curly-Haired Dogs Get Groomed?

Dogs with wavy and curly-haired coats have higher grooming requirements than short-haired canines. Breeds like the Poodle, Maltese, Havanese, and Portuguese Water Dog should be brushed daily by their pet parents and get monthly baths.

Thanks to the love and devotion of her new mom, @bplusparrotmom, Dolly gets a fresh start and is learning how to enjoy the little things in life, like feeling the sun on her beak. The sweet, quiet girl loved outside time (not the grass so much), and her meek little voice is a sign that this Cockatoo is beginning to trust again.

Many fans couldn’t help but notice the uncanny resemblance to the late, great Dolly Parton. Between the pastel blue around her eyes and big “blonde hair,” she’s like a miniature bird version of Dolly, and after 2 hours in the sunshine, she’s feeling a little more “Dolly” than before!

Not to mention she’s modeling the cutest tiny sweater ever knitted. Due to her chronic plucking (from stress), her feathers may never grow back, so these sweaters are more than just cute; they’re much-needed warmth.

There’s been a lot of firsts for the rescue Parrot, and each new thing takes some getting used to. She had her first bath and is learning how to balance on Mom’s hand so Mom can hold her close. The “incredibly sweet and curious” girl will need time to see that not all humans will hurt her.

“I actually look forward to the day Dolly starts being a little naughty Cockatoo,” Mom wrote. “I want her to tell me ‘no.’ I want her to have opinions, push boundaries, and be defiant sometimes. Because when Dolly finally feels safe enough to misbehave, I’ll know she finally understands that she’s allowed to.”

Hallelujah 🙌 Dolly loves her little sock sweaters AND she actually leaves them on! 🥹💕 And it’s a really good thing, because Dolly needs them. With no signs of any stage of new feathers emerging under her skin, it’s looking more and more likely that years of chronic plucking have permanently damaged many of her feather follicles. Without feathers to help regulate her body temperature, keeping this little naked chicken warm is going to be an important part of her care. It’s a good sign that Dolly wants to preen her new mom, as it’s a loving gesture Cockatoos do among their flocks. And yes, we are crying.

How To Help Rescue Birds Thrive 

Taking in a rescue Cockatoo with so much past trauma requires a loving, patient bird parent who can provide a safe, predictable environment and a no-pressure, slow approach to build trust.

Dolly took to her new mom right away, but other rescue birds might prefer a hands-off method so they can decide how and when to make contact. Having part of their cage covered and positioned in a quiet spot helps them feel safe and secure while they decompress.

The NW Parrot Rescue suggests at least 3 hours of daily interaction, 3 different rotating toys or enrichment activities, and 3 opportunities for physical movement as the foundation. And as always, read their body language so you don’t force interaction.

With consistent routines, positive reinforcement, and cage-free time, these feathery friends will eventually come out of their shells. As for sweet Dolly, she deserves nothing but sunshine days for the rest of her life (and all the cute sweaters)!

I am extremely susceptible to puppies wearing accessories. Put a tiny sweater on a dog and I’m interested. Add a little bow and I’m basically finished. But put TWO pale pink bows on an impossibly fluffy Australian Shepherd puppy and apparently I lose the ability to think rationally at all.

Because look at this baby girl. She’s caramel brown and white, outrageously fluffy and sitting sweetly on a dog bed with two little pink bows in her fur. She just looks around innocently like she has absolutely no idea she’s dressed like somebody’s beloved toddler on picture day.

Before two tiny pink bows convince you to bring home an Australian Shepherd, it’s worth remembering that there’s a whole lot of dog underneath all that fluff.

Australian Shepherds are intelligent, energetic herding dogs. They generally need plenty of physical activity along with mental stimulation, training and things to keep those very smart brains occupied.

That can make them wonderful companions for active families who want a dog involved in their daily lives. But if your dream dog considers moving from one end of the sofa to the other sufficient exercise for the day, an Aussie might not be your ideal match.

As with any breed, individual personalities vary, and anyone considering a puppy should think about whether the breed’s typical energy level, grooming needs and temperament work with their household and lifestyle.

This is important information.

It is also information that becomes significantly harder to process when the prospective puppy is sitting there wearing two pale pink bows.

She’s not trying to convince you to get another dog.

She’s just a baby girl.

When you have a litter of puppies, things don’t always go as planned. You can plan as much as you like, but sometimes, your dog has triple the puppies you expected, or they come out looking like a baby bumblebee. You just never know.

Recently, when one Golden Retriever gave birth to her adorable litter of puppies, everything looked like it went according to plan… Until they took a closer look. They were a whole litter of red puppies, except for one:

Chapel’s Premier Goldens was expecting a full litter of dark red Golden Retriever puppies. They got that, for the most part, save for one puppy. Using this sound from Mean Girls is so funny! It would have been exactly what I thought of!

Both Mom and Dad are dark red Goldens, but for them to have one little white (lighter golden) puppy, there have to be lighter genes in their line somewhere. Though it’s very funny to witness, this is actually not uncommon at all. Darker dogs have lighter puppies all the time.

All of the puppies, including the light one, are as healthy as can be. They’re still young, so it’ll be weeks before they go to their new homes, but that’s okay. Until then, they just have to play with each other and make sure their mom never gets a break. She won’t mind, though. Just look at that little face:

I’m obsessed with Golden Retriever puppies. I wish they stayed this little forever! Adult Goldens are gorgeous, but these puppies have a special place in my heart.

Different Golden Retriever Colors

When we hear a name like “Golden Retriever,” it’s easy to assume that all of the puppies will be the same shade of golden. In reality, there are more variations than you’d think!

There are three officially recognized variations of Golden Retrievers:

• Light Golden/English Cream: a butter-yellow, creamy color.
• Golden: bright golden fur (this is the most common).
• Dark Golden/Red: darker golden fur with a reddish hue.

No matter which color you choose, you’re getting a loving, loyal dog. Who knows, you might get a completely different colored puppy, too! He might stick out, but it’s in the best way!
