'Completely Shut Down' Shelter Pit Bull Mix Sweetly Responds to Affection and People Are Melting

Fri, 05/29/2026 - 7:10am

Dogs in shelters often have a history of abuse and neglect. They need time, patience, and compassion to work through their fear and learn to trust again. Some canines have extensive emotional damage and are afraid to let their guard down or show their true personality.

Foxy is a Pit Bull at the NAWS Humane Society. She has been traumatized by dog-fighting abuse and has completely closed herself off emotionally due to the pain she's experienced.

@franflight

The sweetest and most perfect girl has broken all of our hearts this past week. We are all so thankful that she survived her surgery. Foxy does have a mass on her neck that still needs to be evaluated, which should happen soon but she is currently looking for a foster home or a foster to adopt situation. We are located in Mokena, IL. I’m sending you all so much love and if you have any questions or are serious about fostering, adopting, or helping her please email me directly. My email is in my bio. I am sending you guys SO much love, let’s find Foxy her forever. 🥹🫂🤍 #adopt #adoptdontshop #dog #dogadoption #pitbull

In the TikTok from @franflight, Foxy lay motionless on the floor as a shelter staff member gave her some tender affection in the hopes of making her feel safe.

"Foxy is a dog fighting ring survivor," the on-screen text explained. "She's completely shut down."

The precious Pittie hadn't eaten in two weeks. After giving birth to multiple litters, Foxy was battling pyometra, a serious uterine infection, requiring emergency surgery.

"She's scared," the story continued. "She's confused."

As the NAWS staff member spent time with Foxy, gently petting her and speaking softly, the canine cutie slowly began to respond. She even leaned in to the young woman for closeness and eventually stood up to give an adorable tail wag and butt wiggle.

"With a little time and a little patience, you can tell all she wants is to be gently loved," the text read.

Foxy Hopes for a Forever Home

The 6-year-old canine has a mass on her neck that needs to be evaluated and most likely surgically removed. Since the shelter is a chaotic and somewhat stressful environment, Foxy would experience better emotional and physical recovery in a home to call her own.

In the meantime, the team at NAWS is focused on helping Foxy fully heal and committed to finding her a loving family.

"Foxy isn't defined by her past — she's a survivor," the video concluded. "We love you so much, Foxy. Your forever home is around the corner."

8 Important Considerations Before Adopting a Cat, According to a Vet

Fri, 05/29/2026 - 7:02am

Bringing home a cat can feel surprisingly easy at first. Compared to dogs, cats are often seen as lower-maintenance pets that happily nap in sunny windows, quietly entertain themselves and require less day-to-day attention. Terrible weather outside? That's no problem for cat parents. Thanks to a litter box, cats don't require long walks outside in rain, snow and other inclement weather like dogs do. Need to work late? It's no sweat for cat parents. You don't have to worry about getting someone to take your cat outside for a potty break or exercise.

Given their different demeanor and needs from dogs, cats may seem like independent animals, but veterinarians say many first-time cat owners underestimate the long-term responsibility that comes with adopting one. From veterinary expenses and behavioral adjustments to preparing your home and budgeting for pet supplies, there are some important factors future cat owners should think through before making a commitment to a new furry cat friend.

Organizations such as the American Humane Society stress the importance of preparing your household, choosing the right personality fit and understanding that cats need enrichment, patience and proper medical care to thrive.

Before adopting a cat, here are the eight biggest things experts say every future cat owner should consider.

The Expert

To learn more about what considerations to think about before adopting a cat, we spoke with Dr. Jordyn Zoul, a veterinarian at Seaside Veterinary Hospital on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

8 Things to Consider Before Adopting a Cat

Image via Shutterstock/ 1st footage

"Owning a cat can be one of the simplest ways to add fulfillment and joy to your life," says veterinarian Dr. Jordyn Zoul. "At the same time, they can be incredibly social, attached to their person, loving and funny little roommates."

Still, she notes that cat ownership also comes with financial responsibilities that can quickly add up, especially during the first year.

Here's what to know about cats, their potential expenses, and how to keep them happy and healthy.

1. Cats Are a Long-Term Commitment

Image via Shutterstock / Nadia Cruzova

Cats can live well into their teens, and some even reach their early twenties. Before adopting a cat, it’s important to think about whether you are prepared for the long-term financial and emotional responsibility of caring for a pet throughout its entire life.

2. Veterinary Costs May Add Up Quickly

Shutterstock/David Herraez Calzada

According to Dr. Zoul, kittens in particular may require several veterinary visits within their first few months of life. "If you’re getting a kitten (less than 1 year of age) and they’ve had no vaccines, you need to plan on being at the vet at least 3-4 times in the first 4 months of their life," she says.

Dr. Zoul says exam fees alone may range from $70 to $120 per visit depending on where you live, while vaccines and dewormers may add another $30 to $60 each appointment. She recommends planning for roughly $400 to $600 in initial preventive care costs, along with the cost of a future spay or neuter procedure.

3. Shelter Cats May Already Have Important Medical Care Completed

Shutterstock/Melissa Sue

Adopting from a shelter or rescue organization can sometimes reduce upfront medical expenses. Dr. Zoul notes that many shelters vaccinate, microchip, and spay or neuter cats before adoption.

Before adopting a cat, check with the shelter or rescue to find out what (if any) medical care has already been completed for the cat you're interested in adopting. Be sure to also ask for any medical papers and microchip documents so you can have a record of what vaccines the cat has had, any medical procedures they've had and the microchip tracking information that's on file.

4. Your Home Needs to Be Prepared

Image via Shutterstock / FamVeld

Before your new cat arrives, stock up on necessary supplies ahead of time. According to the American Humane Society, cats need essentials like a litter box, food and water bowls, cat food, scratching posts, toys, grooming supplies and a safe place to sleep.

Cat-proofing your home is equally important. Kittens and curious cats may chew electrical cords, swallow small objects or jump onto kitchen counters if food is left unattended.

5. Cats Still Need Mental Stimulation and Attention

Image via Shutterstock / Svetlana Rey

Although cats are often considered low-maintenance pets, they still require daily interaction and enrichment. The American Humane Society notes that cats need exercise, stimulation, and social interaction to stay happy and healthy. The organization even suggests considering adopting two cats together so they can help entertain and socialize each other.

6. Every Cat Has a Different Personality

Image via Shutterstock / Andi111

Finding a cat whose temperament matches your lifestyle can make the transition easier for both of you. According to the American Humane Society, more easygoing cats are often described as having rounder faces and longer hair, while leaner cats with narrower faces may be more active and energetic.

Shelter staff and adoption counselors can often help match adopters with a cat whose personality fits their household. Be clear with them about what you're looking for in a cat, and they can better help you find your new feline friend.

7. Introducing a Cat to a New Home Takes Patience

Image via Shutterstock / Sabrina Suppers

Moving into a new environment can feel stressful for many cats, especially kittens or cats entering a home with other pets. The American Humane Society recommends initially keeping a newly adopted cat confined to a quiet room with food, water, toys, a litter box and a safe place to hide while they adjust. It may take several weeks for some cats to fully relax in a new environment, so slow introductions and patience are important.

8. Everyone in the Household Should Be Prepared for a Cat

Getty Images fizkes

Before adopting, the American Humane Society recommends making sure everyone in the home is ready for the responsibility of caring for a pet. This includes discussing introductions with existing pets and creating a plan for emergencies that includes your new cat. The organization also cautions against giving cats as surprise gifts because future owners should actively participate in the adoption process and have time to prepare for the commitment.

How Much Does It Cost to Own a Cat?

Shutterstock - Gorodenkoff

The first year of cat ownership is typically the most expensive. Between initial veterinary appointments, vaccines, spay or neuter procedures, supplies, food, and litter, costs can quickly add up.

According to Dr. Zoul, first-year expenses may include:

  • $400-$600 for vaccines, exams and preventive care
  • $250-$600 for spay or neuter surgery
  • $150-$400 for supplies like litter boxes, toys and food bowls

After the first year, costs often decrease to primarily food, litter, annual wellness exams and routine veterinary care.

Other Things to Know Before Adopting a Cat

Image via Shutterstock/Tom Reichner

You should choose a veterinarian before bringing your cat home and schedule an initial visit shortly after adoption. The American Humane Society advises bringing any medical records provided by the shelter or rescue organization to that first appointment.

It’s also important to remember that cats can take time to settle into a new environment. Some may immediately explore their surroundings, while others may hide for days or even weeks as they adjust. Giving cats patience, consistency and a quiet space can help ease the transition and build trust more quickly.

7 Subtle Ways Your Dog Is Asking for Help That You Might Be Missing, According to Experts

Fri, 05/29/2026 - 5:05am

Anyone who has a dog in their home knows there are certain telltale signs only they can recognize. Whether it’s the way our pups look at us or how they lie down, these small and subtle cues can instantly tell us that something is wrong with our furry friends. These cues often come after years of getting to know one another and being part of each other’s routine. While there are definitely cues that only a dog’s human can pick up, there are plenty of others that may go unnoticed.

While our pups aren’t necessarily hiding secrets from us, there are many signs that our dogs give us when they truly need our help that we may accidentally miss or not recognize. Even though we might think we know our dogs pretty well, some of these signs may go unnoticed. Whether it’s because they’ve never expressed themselves in such a manner or they’ve picked up a new habit from another pet, these signs may feel foreign to pet parents, and we may be missing out on important communication from our furry friends.

🐶SIGN UP to get “pawsitivity” delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

To get to the bottom of these subtle signs, we spoke with dog behavior experts to help decode and demystify these cues to help us better understand and care for our dogs. At the end of the day, there are only so many ways to communicate with our pups, and knowing them all helps build a better bond between our dogs and us humans.

Our Panel of Experts

We spoke with these two dog behavior experts to help us better understand the surprising ways dogs may be asking for help.

  • Chris Edge: Chris Edge is the founder of K9Edge Dog Training, a certified dog trainer, and a retired police officer with expertise in canine behavior, behavior modification, high-stress behavior cases, and family dog integration.
  • Shawna Baskette: Shawna Baskette is the owner of Reactive Dog Reset and a dog behavior researcher who specializes in reactivity and anxious dogs, which requires thorough knowledge of body language.
Subtle Ways Your Dog Is Asking for Help

fatty corgi / Unsplash

These are the seven subtle ways your dog may ask for your help.

Lip Licking

Andrey Storn/Unsplash

“Dogs lick their lips to calm tense situations and signal that they’re not a threat,” says Shawna Baskette, a dog behavior researcher. “Other dogs can read this, but most humans cannot. So the next time your dog licks their lips, hang back—they’re trying to tell you something. Give them space. If they come back to you for attention, you know they want it.”

Yawning

Zhen Yao/Unsplash

Unlike humans who use yawning to signal that they’re tired, dogs may use yawning as a way to show that they’re not OK. “Similar to lip licking, it’s pretty well established in the research that dogs yawn to de-escalate tension or express mild stress," Baskette says. "Like with the lip lick, give them some space when they yawn.”

Looking Away

Maria Baranova/Unsplash

While sometimes our pups look away because they know they’re in trouble, other times it may be a sign that they need their personal space. Chris Edge, founder of K9Edge Dog Training, says that signs like looking away or avoiding eye contact may be a sign from your dog that means they’re “asking for distance” or that they’re telling you “please don’t come closer.”

Appeasement Grin

Gabriella Clare Marino/Unsplash

“If your dog shows their teeth, but in a way that resembles a human smile, and there are no aggressive behaviors like a growl, then they are likely telling you, 'I’m friendly and I mean no harm. Let’s be friends!'" Baskette says. "Also known as the submissive grin, it is more correctly referred to as the appeasement grin because that is exactly what your dog is trying to do. The grin is rare. Most dogs never do it. They use other appeasement signals like lip licking, looking away or yawning instead.”

The appeasement grin shows that not all signs from our dogs are meant to be aggressive or signs of worry.

Check the Tail

Richard Burlton/Unsplash

While many humans know that a tucked tail may signify a stressed or anxious dog, other tail movements are also important to know.

“A wagging tail does not automatically mean a happy dog,” Edge says. “Fast, high, stiff wagging can indicate arousal or conflict just as easily as excitement.”

Baskette adds that “when their wags are asymmetrical, wagging more to the right or to the left, your dog is communicating something important." She says that "when a dog wags their tail more to the right, they are comfortable and want to approach, but when a dog wags their tail more to the left, they are not comfortable and want to retreat from the situation.”

Shaking Off

Nikolay Tchaouchev/Unsplash

While many pups like to shake off after a swim or bath, a dry shake can be a lot more telling. As Baskette explains, “When dogs shake, they are marking a transition from one activity to another. That transition could be the end of a stressful encounter, so the old saying (of ‘shaking it off’) is partially true, but typically it is any transition, not just a stressful one."

Inability to Take Food or Cues

Pasqualino Capobianco/Unsplash

When dogs sometimes refuse to pay attention to their human or don’t take a bite of their favorite foods, it’s not always indicative of a medical problem. In some of these cases, it may be a sign of stress or overwhelm. As Edge explains, “this is a key sign of an overwhelmed dog” and that it’s “time to leave.”

How to Become Fluent in Your Dog’s Body Language

Milli / Unsplash

Not only is it important to know these subtle signs, but it’s also vital that a pet parent learns their pup’s body language. “Becoming fluent in dog body language starts with slowing down and observing patterns instead of isolated moments,” Edge says. “Owners must watch for these general signs: Body looseness versus stiffness; weight shifting forward or backward; breathing changes; tail carriage and movement quality (not just wagging); ability to disengage and reorient; and recovery time after stress.”

Edge also says to trust your instinct. "Every owner I work with can sense exactly when their dog needs help or is going to ‘flip the switch,’" he says. "The key is to pay attention to what you see before that moment so we can be proactive to keep the dog from becoming reactive.”

While every dog is different, these subtle signs from your dog may help you get ahead of anything that might be bothering them. Knowing these dog behaviors may also help you remove them from anxious or stressful situations before they become problematic.

Decoding your dog's behavior isn't just about everyone’s safety. It's about learning more about your dog’s body language and understanding their emotions, which can bring you closer to your furry friend and help them know that you are there for them in any way you can be.

3-Week-Old Tabby Kittens Play-Fight Like Tiny Superheroes

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 7:55pm

I'm a firm believer that there's nothing an adorable litter of kittens can't cure. They're born with one goal: to bring joy to the world just by existing. As awkward, clumsy, wobbly little babies learning how to navigate the world, they put the "cute" in "cuteness overload," and I, for one, have yet to be disappointed!

The universe must've known we could all use a dose of kitten glee, because these Tabby kitties learning how to play-fight look like the most precious superheroes going to battle. This is one video you'll watch on repeat!

Throwing paws never looked so good! At just 3 weeks old, this crew of kittens has only just started blossoming into our new favorite soldiers, and already, they've made the world a better place.

As one fan joked, "Triangle tail stage is my favorite stage," which is absolutely the best stage! Mama cat, Nyla, gave birth to the bundle of six at the end of April. They're finally coming into their personalities, which means they'll be exploring and growing like weeds over the next few months.

Naya, Nixon, Nina, Nala, Nola, and Neela are everything Tabbies should be, and more. While playing like they're in the cutest cat war ever is one side of them, I'd be remiss not to mention the other side.

The kittens reached the curious age where everything is new and exciting, letting us sink into their deep blue eyes as they take everything in. I'm thinking I need some rescue kittens in my life now (be forewarned, you may feel the same after this clip)!

During the first 6 months of a kitten's life, they gain about a pound a month, every month, reaching about 75% to 80% of their adult size.

Things slow down around 6 to 8 months, which is when they tend to "fill out," rather than grow any bigger. By a kitten's first birthday, they've usually hit their adult weight and size and have probably lost their kitten features.

One day, they barely have their eyes open and are dependent on Mom or us for everything, and the next, they're play-fighting like they're auditioning to be a Marvel Avenger!

These Golden Retrievers Are So Excited About Their Water Adventure, They Literally Start Bouncing

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 7:20pm

Could Golden Retrievers love water more?

According to this new viral dog video, the answer would have to be no, as these two Golden Retrievers are having such a great time on their water adventure in a river that they are literally bouncing by the end.

This is an image of true happiness!

As you can see, they love that the current pulls them under the little bridge like a ride, and then they're already ready to go again as they bounce back.

Their energy is infectious!

The comment section was very strong with this adorable video.

One person said, "The funniest part is they turn around and go butt first! LOL."

Another commented, "OMG! Wanna do it again!? Happy jumps. LMAO."

Another said, "I’m gonna show my dogs this, and they are gonna be so jealous."

And finally: "The whole thing was serotonin gold for me. I owe you for the therapy."

Why Golden Retrievers Love Water

Obviously, these two Golden Retrievers love water, but why do they, and their entire breed, love water so much?

The answer is Goldens were bred to swim.

They were bred in 19th-century Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth to retrieve (it's literally in their name) from lakes and rivers where humans shot animals to fall into, such as ducks or geese, so they had to be good swimmers.

They are strong, excellent paddlers, as they had to be to be able to get the fowl that was floating in the middle of a lake or deep in a river.

The selective breeding traits that make them such strong swimmers include webbed feet and a water-resistant double coat that provides insulation and helps them stay warm in cold water.

They also have muscular chests, shoulders, and hindquarters, which make them extremely strong and capable swimmers.

According to PetMD, they are one of the top 10 swimming dog breeds.

Plus, they just enjoy being in the water, as these two Goldens can barely contain themselves!

Rare Frenchie-Doodle Puppies Look Like Little Curly Fairies

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 7:00pm

If you've ever looked at a dog and thought, "there's no way they made a Doodle out of that," you are wrong. People have made a Doodle out of just about every dog breed there is! There are definitely some that are more popular than others, though.

One that does exist, though we don't see them very often, is the Frenchie-Doodle. It's a cross you almost never see, but the puppies in this video prove that the crossover between the breeds really does produce some precious pups:

@mistylevera

My #toypoodle got my #frenchie pregnant accidentally 😒& well you see what they made! 🤷🏽‍♀️ #fy #fyp #socute

♬ awww so cute - Cherri ⁉️

According to Misty Levera, this was a total accident, and she does not condone purposefully breeding this mix. However, it happened, and the pups are absolutely precious. There are four of them, and they're actually Toy Frenchie-Doodles: it was a Toy Poodle who got her Frenchie pregnant.

These puppies are already pretty big, and they'll probably end up being mid-sized: Frenchies aren't small, so the Doodles will end up being slightly bigger than their Poodle dad! As for their energy levels, let's just say they're going to grow up to be a true handful.

Related: Rare German Shepherd-Doodle Is Like a Fluffy Cinnamon Roll With Legs

There haven't been many updates posted about the pups so far, but that can be a good thing, too. They've been growing up in peace! Their human caretaker did finally post an update, though, and they're seriously so precious already:

@mistylevera

Cause yall real mad about my pups 🥰 #fy #fyp #socute #frenchie #toypoodle

♬ awww so cute - Cherri ⁉️

It won't be long now until these pups are off to their forever homes. Misty is just soaking in all of the love while she can!

What Are Frenchie-Doodles Like?

If you want one of these dogs, it's going to be kind of hard to find one. Most breeders won't produce this cross, so accidental encounters are one of the only ways to get your paws on one. That's probably for the best, even though the pups are so cute!

Image via Shutterstock / sophiecat

Frenchie-Doodles are energetic, loving dogs. They like to hang out with the people they love most, go for walks, and play. They're perfect for homes with kids and can get along well with other dogs and even cats! However, there are a few things to know about them:

  • They're often born with the "smushed" Frenchie face, which can lead to breathing issues.
  • They overheat easily, especially in the summer heat.
  • They're prone to matting, just like all other Doodles.
  • They can be anxious.

If you happen to come across one, they'll be an amazing dog. You just have to make sure to take it slow!

This Sweet Cat Couldn’t Have Babies — So She Poured Her Love Into a Bunny Instead

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 6:10pm

Dogs are known for their empathetic nature, making them a top pick for therapy and service animals. While cats still have the stereotype of being aloof or overly independent, they also have a caring side that they show toward their loved ones.

Pandora is a striped cat with a very gentle heart. She realized her bunny sibling, Honeybun, needed a maternal figure and immediately stepped up.

@honeybun.haku

that’s Pandora’s baby now 🥺 she absolutely loves her bunny, and the same goes for Honeybun * EDIT* i’m not responding anymore to those who don’t know how much and how FAST a bunny poops 😂 not only do they just eat pellets and hay, i clean it after i put her up (as she can poop several pieces every couple of mins…) maybe educate yourself on rabbits before you comment babes #cat #rabbitsoftiktok #cute #bunny #rabbit

♬ My baby my baby - MadZ

In the TikTok from @honeybun.haku, Pandora had Honeybun completely wrapped in her arms as she gently bathed her with her tongue. You could barely see the bunny since the two were literally enveloped in each other, perfectly content in the close cuddle. Pandora seemed to fully commit to the mission of being a mom.

"She can't have babies of her own, so she adopted our bunny," the onscreen text explained. "At times, I wonder if she remembers when her mom used to groom her too."

Neither the pretty kitty nor the baby bunny was in any hurry to stop snuggling and both were obviously enjoying every moment together.

"That’s Pandora’s baby now," the caption shared. "She absolutely loves her bunny, and the same goes for Honeybun."

Followers were moved by the tender scene and commented on the siblings' bond.

"Awww she's making sure the bunny is clean," one noted.

"I can’t tell where the bunny starts and the cat ends," another posted.

"I have one cat that just ADORES my rabbits — she snuggles and grooms them every chance she gets," a follower shared.

"Oh it’s warm over there in that cuddle puddle — so snuggly!" someone gushed.

"This totally is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen," a fan remarked.

Why Cats Are Maternal Toward Other Animals

Cats have a very strong maternal instinct that kicks in immediately after giving birth. As Pandora demonstrated, this parental yearning can apply to baby animals that aren't their own. Female cats often become surrogate mothers to orphaned kittens, as well as puppies, bunnies, squirrels, and ducklings.

These sweet cats exhibit mothering behavior through grooming, guarding, teaching survival skills, and even attempting to nurse.

Pandora is a wonderful example of how caring and protective cats are with smaller and more vulnerable animals.

Woman Went to an Adoption Center and Left With Two Rare Sweethearts

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 1:48pm

Sometimes the hardest decision at an adoption center is not whether to bring an animal home. It is figuring out how you are supposed to choose just one.

A woman on Reddit's r/rarepuppers shared the split-second decision that changed her family overnight. She had visited a local adoption center, spotted two tiny baby rabbits together in a basket, and felt something click. She was not leaving without both of them.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

She wrote, "A few days ago I went to an adoption center and saw them. And since I couldn't decide, I brought them both home."

Honestly, the only correct choice.

The Tiny Pair People Could Not Stop Talking About

Photos of the two babies spread quickly through the thread. Commenters could not get over how impossibly small they looked curled up together.

One person wrote, "Omg they are literally so tiny!! You definitely made the right choice, they're going to be so happy together."

Another commenter said she had basically adopted her own animated movie. "You brought home your very own Disney movie! Your life is going to be filled with so many adorable moments."

They were not wrong.

The woman later revealed that the two had already been together before she found them. "Yes, they were together in the basket and I really didn't want to separate them. They'll be brothers forever."

Brothers forever. In a basket. Someone get a camera on these two at all times.

Why Bonded Pairs Are Special

Rabbits are not solitary animals, even though people often treat them that way. In the wild, they live in groups. A rabbit kept alone can grow bored, anxious and withdrawn in ways that are easy to miss until the signs are hard to ignore.

Bonded pairs are different. They nap pressed against each other. They groom each other constantly. They follow one another around the house like little shadows who have decided that separation is not an option. Calmer, more confident, more active, bonded rabbits do better together.

When a pair arrives already bonded, the way these two did, you skip what can be a long and sometimes tense introduction process entirely. They already know each other. They already trust each other. You just give them a home to share.

The Moment That Made It Even Better

What sealed this story for everyone reading was one small detail the woman added at the end. Before the family left the adoption center, the staff sat down with her son and walked him through everything the rabbits would need: proper diet, handling, space, care.

She wrote, "Even the place where we adopted them gave my son a little talk about the care they need. We're very happy with them."

A good adoption center sends you home prepared, not just excited, and this family got both.

Two tiny rabbits in a basket, a boy who now knows how to take care of them, and a mom who simply refused to choose. Some decisions make themselves.

This Labrador's Adorable Early Morning Routine Has Other Parents Feeling Very Jealous

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 12:48pm

Imagine opening your eyes every single morning to a wet nose hovering inches from your face, same time, every day, no exceptions. There is no alarm or snooze button, just a Labrador who has decided that 6 a.m. is the correct time to start the day.

For one Labrador mom, this was her reality. After reaching her limit, she took it to Reddit's r/labrador hoping for sympathy. "Will she ever sleep in?" she asked. "Or are we stuck with the 6 am alarm forever?"

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

The internet had thoughts.

The Replies She Did Not See Coming

"You got the 6am version? I got the 4am model," shared one Redditor.

Another joined in: "Anytime between 4 and 4:30am is fair game. God, what I would give to sleep until 6."

Within minutes, her post had turned into a full support group for the chronically sleep-deprived. Dog parents from everywhere were filing in with their stories, each one more brutal than the last. The woman who posted looking for solutions suddenly realized she had it better than most.

And then came the comment that stopped everyone mid-scroll: "6am. Every day. No matter what. Though he does let me snooze a couple times. And if I get up and feed him, he lets me go back to bed. Such a nice owner I have."

That last line broke everyone.

Why Dogs Do This in the First Place

Here is the thing about dogs and morning routines: they are not trying to be annoying. They are just very, very good at learning patterns.

If your dog wakes you at 6 a.m. and you get up, feed them and start your day, congratulations. You have just taught them that 6 a.m. works. Dogs repeat what gets results. It is not manipulation. It is just excellent pattern recognition dressed in fur.

The good news is that you can change the pattern. Start by gradually pushing breakfast back by ten minutes at a time, staying boring and low-energy in the morning, and not rewarding the wake-up call with attention. You have to be consistent, but it will work.

The Trick That Actually Works

One commenter offered the sweetest solution of the whole thread: "I just say 'snuggle time' and she knows we're going back to sleep."

That's it. That's the hack. Teach your dog a word for going back to bed, give it meaning by actually going back to sleep when you say it, and suddenly the 6 a.m. wake-up comes with a negotiation window.

Some dogs will snooze. Some will stare at you until you cave. But either way, you are not suffering alone, and based on that Reddit thread, the 4 a.m. crowd would genuinely kill to have your problem.

Aldi's New $5 Cooling Toy Is a Total Game Changer for Summer Heat

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 11:48am

The moment the freezer door opens, some dogs come running. Some come for treats, others come for frozen carrots. And some would love some ice cream. Anything cold enough to cope with the summer heat.

Now Aldi has quietly dropped a dog toy that feels like it was made for exactly those dogs.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

The discount grocer's Heart to Tail Cooling Dog Toy has started popping up in stores for under $5, and pet parents are already treating it like one of those "grab it before it disappears" Aldi finds.

Heart to Tail Bone/Watermelon Cooling Dog Toy, $4.99 at Aldi

The Heart to Tail Cooling Dog Toy is exactly what it sounds like: a chew toy you fill with water, freeze, and hand to your dog when the temperature climbs. It is simple and easy to use. And dog parents who have picked one up say the results are genuinely delightful.

Yes, it looks like a watermelon. Yes, your dog will absolutely drool all over it. Fill it with water, freeze it overnight, and you've got a chew toy that stays cold as the ice works its way out—great for hot days when your dog needs something to gnaw on besides your furniture.

Related: Aldi Just Dropped the Coziest $15 Pet Essential That Gives Your Cat the Best View in the House

Great for Teething Puppies

For puppies going through the teething phase, this toy provides relief. The frozen core soothes sore gums and lasts longer, giving your puppy something to interact with.

The good news is puppies are not the only ones enjoying it. Adult dogs love a solid chew session, and the bright colors and fun shape will hold their attention more than a plain rubber toy.

Turn Walks into a Summer Ritual

Another way to use the toy is to incorporate it into your walking routine. This is one of those pet products that can help you solve real-life problems.

Freeze the toy before you go for your daily walk. Once you come back, the cold toy will be waiting for your pup. Some pet parents also use frozen toys during crate time to help their furry friends settle down.

And when you have friends coming over, use the toy to give your dog something to do. Because the toy stays interesting longer when frozen, it can buy you some peace during the "I am bored and need chaos" dog moments.

Nosy Rottweiler ‘Eavesdrops’ on Owls Like He’s Listening for Gossip

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 11:05am

Elroy the Rottweiler has made an urgent discovery : the owls in his yard are talking about him. He’s not above eavesdropping and he needs to know everything.

The TikTok from@elroy.rottweiler shows Elroy standing completely still, ears up, head tilted, and toy in mouth.

His head's cocked and he’s locked onto sounds coming from the trees. Not barking and not chasing. Just listening with the focused intensity of someone receiving highly classified information.

The caption explained the situation: "Elroy loves observing nature. 🌲🦉🦉🌲"

@elroy.rottweiler

Elroy loves observing nature.🌲🦉🦉🌲 Do you?🤎🖤🐾 #rottweilersoftiktok #owls #naturelover #rottweilerlife #justlisten

♬ original sound - Elroy Rottweiler 🐾

The text overlay breaks it all down perfectly:

"Eavesdropping on owls. Owls: 'Whooos a good boy.' Elroy: 'Mama they talkin about me?!' Owl: 'Elroy, that's whooo!' Elroy: 'Wise owls.'"

Firstly: the owls are absolutely right. Elroy IS a good boy. Second: his absolute certainty that this conversation is specifically about him is the most dog thing ever. Of course they're talking about him. Why would they be discussing anything else? Somebody thinks pretty highly of themselves.

The way he stands there processing every hoot with complete seriousness—like a CIA agent reviewing surveillance footage—is both absolutely hilarious and actually very  impressive.

"Love Elroy," the caption ends.

Same.

Why Dogs Are Fascinated by Wildlife Sounds

What's actually happening when Elroy locks onto those owls? His brain is doing exactly what his canine brain was designed to do.

"Crittering"—when dogs obsessively watch, track, or listen to wildlife—isn't a choice. It's their natural instinct. Before dogs were domesticated, they hunted for survival. That meant tracking animals by both sight and sound. Thousands of years later, those instincts are completely intact.

When Elroy hears owls calling, something ancient in his brain switches on immediately and takes over. He locks in. He focuses. He listens.

Related: A Bernese Mountain Dog Just Realized the New Baby Is Here to Stay, and His Reaction Is Hilarious

Dogs notice wildlife in stages. First the new sound catches their attention. Then their eyes follow in pursuit of location. Then their body tenses, as they ready. It's an automatic sequence that kicks in whether they want it to or not. It’s not a choice, it’s their nature taking over.  Elroy is right in those early stages—ears tuned in, eyes scanning—which is why he looks so completely and utterly focused.

Rottweilers are especially wired this way. Originally working and herding dogs, Rottweilers have sharp innate instincts for tracking movement and sound in their surrounding environment. Elroy isn't actually being nosy. He's being exactly the dog he was bred to be. He’s paying attention because he needs to.

Here's the absolute best part: calm observation like Elroy's is actually one of the healthiest things a dog can do with those instincts. No chaos. No chasing the neighbor's pet. Just watching and listening while those ancient tracking instincts get a quiet, peaceful workout.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Experts call this the "Look at That" approach—letting dogs track wildlife visually and by scent without actually chasing it down and attacking. It satisfies the same deep instinctual need as chasing, just without the destruction.

For Elroy, it also apparently also involves making sure the owls are saying only nice things.

They are, buddy. They absolutely are.

Whooo's a good boy? You are.

Service Dog Gets Her Own Diploma at College Graduation and Everyone Is Emotional

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 10:55am

Get ready to cry your eyes out when you see this service dog receive his own graduation diploma in this viral dog video.

At this year's Texas Tech University graduation, student Makaela Muse crossed the stage with her service dog, Sadie, to receive her degree.

Muse and Sadie, who were both dressed in graduation robes, got the ultimate surprise when the graduation committee surprised Sadie with an honorary “diploma” of her own.

How sweet was that when Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovenec put the diploma in Sadie's mouth?!

A well-deserved moment for Sadie for lots of hard work over the last four years.

We would have applauded, too. What a beautiful, tearjerker moment!

Why Service Dogs Are Such Important Partners for Students

Sadie was a vital partner for Muse to earn her bachelor's degree in animal sciences.

After passing out in her first lab, Muse was finally diagnosed with two health conditions that cause hormonal fluctuations.

Sadie became a medical alert dog who attended every class with Muse, including labs and long study sessions.

This service dog absolutely deserves a diploma for her hard work!

Muse is now applying to veterinary school, and she plans to have Sadie right by her side. They make a great team and have a strong emotional bond!

"There is no Makaela without Sadie, we're a packaged deal at this point," she said in an interview.

According to ServiceAnimalRegistrar.org, a service dog has full access rights on a college campus under the ADA and Section 504, which includes the classroom, the dining hall, the library, and on-campus housing.

The service dog can also accompany their parent anywhere on a college campus.

A service dog like Sadie can also help a student with medical disabilities facilitate interactions with teachers and other students, contributing to a more inclusive school atmosphere.

Dramatic American Bully Literally Slams the Door After Getting Denied an Extra Treat

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 10:10am

Both of my dogs are expressive in their own ways, especially when they don't get what they want. My senior Dachshund gives me the cold shoulder when I won't give her that extra biscuit she begs for, and her Pug brother follows me around whining if I don't take him for a car ride. It's their own way of throwing a temper tantrum like a toddler, so I just give them time to cool off.

Pablo the American Bully dog reacts more like a teenager when his demands are refused, especially when it comes to treats.

@americanbulliepablo01

My godness! My dog has attitude 🥹😅 #americanbully #fyp #trending #foryou #viral

♬ original sound - Pablo_01

In the TikTok from @americanbulliepablo01, the petulant pooch had his back to his mom and let out a few growls after she turned down his snack request.

"No, you cannot have another treat," she told Pablo firmly. "You've had too many, too many. Sorry."

Pablo didn't care for her response and showed his disdain by storming off into the other room. Then to drive his point home, Pablo slammed the door "like a moody teenager," prompting a loud gasp from his mom.

"My dog has attitude," the caption noted.

Followers related to the teen treatment Pablo's mom was subjected to, while others advocated for the cranky canine to get an extra biscuit.

"But mom you can never have enough treats," one explained.

"My dog will go under our bed and pout," another shared.

"Mine is like that too, lol," a follower remarked.

"I’ll go to my room so you adjust your attitude mom," someone joked.

How to Handle Pet Tantrums

Some dogs have mild tantrums at times, while others get worked up into a full-blown tizzy. Some ways to prevent or stop unwanted behaviors include:

Related: Pit Bull Mix Adorably Refuses Her Mom's Attempts of Comfort

  • Identify the underlying cause — Try to determine if your dog is anxious, scared, or in need of attention so you can properly address the behavior.
  • Consistent basic training — Common commands like "sit", "stay", and "leave it" that are regularly practiced can help your dog calm down in the moment.
  • Exercise and mental stimulation — Your dog is more likely to act out if they're bored or haven't expended any energy, so make sure they get daily physical and mental activity.
  • Avoid reinforcing negative behavior — Don't give in to tantrum-like actions, like allowing an extra biscuit when your dog won't stop barking.
  • Be patient and consistent — It takes time to create new behaviors and unlearn negative traits, so proceed with patience and positive reinforcement.

It probably took some time for Pablo to cool off, but hopefully he made amends with his mom.

Dramatic Cockatoo Demands Dad's Attention in the Funniest Way

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 9:55am

If there's one thing pet parents universally understand, it's that sometimes our cute companions act like toddlers having a full-blown meltdown. This looks different with every pet, and if you have a "mouthy" fur child in the mix, it's sometimes comparable to rationalizing with an angsty teen (which I also have)!

One opinionated Cockatoo named Preston isn't shy about letting his true feelings fly. If anything, the more he's tested, the louder he gets about it. This time, he's giving Dad an earful of an argument, and it's giving "big mad" energy!

@monkeyseemonkeydoranch

Preston isn’t shy when he wants you to know something. #monkeyseemonkeydoranch #preston #prestonthecockatoo #fyp #ranchlife

♬ オリジナル楽曲 - haido - haido

Whether you're new to Preston or not, Mom's not lying when she captions a post, "Preston isn't shy when he wants you to know something!" He didn't make his TV debut on Inside Edition for being a typical pet, so this diabolical rant is on the money for a bird in his villain era!

The @monkeyseemonkeydoranch post captures this funny Parrot at his finest as he shouts to Dad that he's not a "bad boy." If he's not complaining about something or bullying Mom, he's not being his true, authentic self (whom we love)!

Related: Cockatoo Reunites With Dad After 5 Days—Then Has the Sweetest Reaction

Preston isn't always shouting and demanding things from his people. There are some quieter moments he spends with Dad (sorry, Mom)! But those clips aren't nearly as hilarious or entertaining as those that show how spicy he can be when stealing the spotlight.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a video that shows Preston not giving someone a piece of his mind (again, sorry, Mom), but that's exactly why he's a sassy little superstar!

@monkeyseemonkeydoranch

Preston wasn’t having it today. #monkeyseemonkeydoranch #preston #prestonthecockatoo #funnyanimals #fyp

♬ original sound - MonkeySeeMonkeyDoRanch Why Cockatoos Bond With One Human More Than Others

I totally get why Preston is so demanding when it comes to wanting Dad's full, undivided attention. In the wild, Cockatoos are social, and they love their flock (which can be upward of 100 or more birds), but they're monogamous by nature.

They choose one special soul for life, and in a domesticated setting, they channel all those intense emotions and physical affection to their one and only trusted human.

Some of the more opinionated Parrots may even reject the others in the house who dare to get in their way of being with their chosen human. All of this to say, if Dad's around, do NOT compete with Preston for his attention!

A Bernese Mountain Dog Just Realized the New Baby Is Here to Stay, and His Reaction Is Hilarious

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 9:48am

Willard the Bernese Mountain Dog has an important announcement to make.

He did not sign up for any of this.

A TikTok from@goodboywillard captures the exact moment Willard processed some very hard to digest information. The text reads: "Willard after realizing the baby isn't going back." I feel you Willard. Lifetime commitment loading.

The simple but completely accurate caption: "Safe to say the adjustment period is ongoing."

And Willard's initial reaction? Pure and complete devastation. This is a dog who has been patiently waiting for this situation to resolve itself, only to discover that it isn't resolving for at least 18 years. The baby is staying. The baby is, in fact, a permanent resident now. And Willard's expression communicates every single emotion about this development.

@goodboywillard

♬ Funny - Gold-Tiger

The comments nailed it:

"Dying! Willard is like - I did not sign up for this. 😂"

"That side eye."

"Willard is in mourning 🥰"

"Sleep when the baby sleeps. Yes! I mean you, Willard ❤️"

"Willard you lovely, fluffy, goof-ball you can come live with me if you can't adjust 😁🥰!"

Here's the thing about Willard: he's not being dramatic. His whole world just changed overnight and nobody asked him about it. His schedule is different and the house is filled with completely different smells. There's a tiny, loud new creature getting mom and dad’s attention. Unfortunately, Willard is realizing that this is just... life now.

He'll eventually get to accept and maybe even enjoy the situation. He just needs a minute.

Helping Dogs Adjust to a New Baby

Willard's adjustment period is perfectly normal, and there's a lot that families can do to make the transition easier for their fur babies.

According to the ASPCA, dogs face an overwhelming number of new sights, sounds, and smells when a baby arrives. For dogs who haven't spent much time around children, some of those things can be genuinely confusing, upsetting or overwhelming.

Start early when possible. Ideally, you should introduce your dog to baby-related items before the baby ever arrives. Unwrap gear like swings and bouncers gradually and let your dog investigate. Play recordings of baby sounds and give your pup treats so they learn that those baby sounds predict good things, not stress. Before we brought our daughters home, we brought our dogs swaddle blankets that smelled of our newborns so they recognized their scent.

Related: Anxious Dogs Are Responding to One Surprising Sound—Studies Show It Works in Minutes

Associate the new arrival with rewards. When the baby is present and awake, make the extra effort to give your dog extra attention, treats, and affection. Make him feel special and like the valued member of the family that he is. The ASPCA recommends doing the opposite of what feels natural—rather than showering your dog with love when the baby sleeps, save special attention for when the baby is around. Your fur baby learns quickly: baby awake = good things happen.

Keep your dog’s routines as consistent as possible. Dogs thrive on predictability. Walks at regular times, feeding schedules, and quiet downtime help dogs feel safe and secure when everything else feels different.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Give your dog a dedicated safe space to go. A comfy bed in the baby's room or a cozy corner nearby allows your dog to be near the family without feeling overwhelmed by them. Occasionally leave treats there for your dog to discover on their own.

Teach a gentle "go away" cue—like an “you’re excused’. This gives your dog an exit option when they feel too uncomfortable rather than feeling trapped. Dogs who know they can simply leave a stressful situation rarely feel the need to growl or snap.

Let them investigate calmly. When your dog is relaxed, allow brief, gentle sniffs of the baby's feet while speaking softly. Keep interactions between baby and pup short and sweet initially, and reward calm, gentle behavior always.

Most dogs—even dramatically devastated ones like Willard—adjust perfectly with time, patience, and consistency. The side-eyes eventually get fewer. The mourning period ends. Before you know it, your dog realizes the baby is actually pretty great—especially once the baby starts dropping food from the high chair.

Willard isn't there yet. But he will be.

Dwarf Brussels Griffon Has the Most Stressful Little Face on the Internet

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 9:20am

Dottie, the dwarf Brussels Griffon, looks like she has spent the last 48 hours witnessing deeply upsetting paranormal activity inside a haunted Victorian mansion.

TikToker @dottiethedwarf shared the hilarious clip showing little Dottie calmly sitting before eerie, horror movie-style music suddenly begins playing.

The SECOND the music starts, Dottie slowly backs herself into a corner with her tiny body pressed dramatically against the wall while staring ahead in complete alarm.

Related: Dog Gets Lost in the Woods for 10 Minutes and Returns Looking Like She’s Seen Ghosts

And honestly? She looks exactly like somebody just whispered, “Don’t turn around.”

The tiny dog’s permanently shocked expression, combined with the horror soundtrack, immediately sent the internet into emotional chaos.

People in the Comments Were Absolutely Losing It:

• “She looks like a Furby.”
• “What kind of bug is this?”
• “Why is she staring at me like that?”
• “You fed her after midnight, didn’t you?”
• “I love this little creature so much.”

Honestly, the “what kind of bug is this?” comment is painfully accurate because Dottie somehow looks like:

• A bat
• A gremlin
• A concerned Victorian child
• A nervous moth
• A creature discovered in an enchanted forest

... all simultaneously.

One commenter perfectly summarized her overall appearance:

“It’s a bat, Chihuahua, Pug, and French Bulldog all at the same time.”

And honestly? That somehow STILL doesn’t fully explain what’s happening here.

The funniest part is that Dottie herself is doing absolutely nothing dramatic, besides standing there, looking deeply emotionally overwhelmed.

Meanwhile, my elderly Orange Cat, Tarkus, also occasionally stares into corners like he’s detecting supernatural activity the rest of us can't perceive, so honestly, I respect tiny, anxious creatures with haunted energy.

Golden Retriever Decides to Go for a Swim Mid-Marriage Proposal—and It’s So On-Brand

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 9:00am

Golden Retrievers love the water: they were bred to be in it. Whenever they can, most of them will seek it out, even if it's a little bit inconvenient for their humans. They don't know any better (even though they definitely do)! You just have to let them live their lives!

One Golden Retriever had the honor of going with his parents while his dad was proposing to his mom. They were making one of the most important memories of their lives... But there was water there, so naturally, he had other plans:

@weddingcutcollective

Wally: attention back on me plz

♬ som original - ana sofia

The moment was so well thought out that the man even hired Wedding Cut Collective, which is a professional wedding and engagement photographer in Australia. Odds are, this was a pretty expensive moment!

Well, if it was expensive before, it's absolutely priceless now: Wally the Golden Retriever totally stole the show. He waited for Dad to be mostly done with the proposal, and then he ran to jump in. Unfortunately for Wally, that water is a little rough, and he was not allowed in.

Related: Golden Retriever Saved From Slaughterhouse Has the Most Grateful Eyes

Though the Wedding Cut Collective doesn't specialize in pets at weddings, they make sure furry friends feel included whenever they're there. It's becoming a lot more common to include pets in weddings:

That's a very well-groomed Doodle. I bet they made a special appointment just for this! How perfect!

Golden Retrievers Love Water

Wally is proof that Golden Retrievers love water, even if it means stealing the show away from your parents' engagement moment. When you're a dog parent, it's just something you have to deal with!

Konstantin Trubavin / Aurora Photos / Getty Images

Golden Retrievers were bred for swimming: they were waterfowl hunting dogs. Their entire job was to swim, and though most have never been hunting a day in their lives, they still love to swim. Though they're natural swimmers, you should still:

  • Supervise them the entire time they're in the water.
  • Only let them swim in bodies of water that are visibly clean.
  • Watch out for fast-moving water.
  • Always bathe them after they go for a swim.

If at all possible, try to introduce them to water when they're still puppies. If they grow up around the water, they're more likely to love it!

This Basenji Is Shattering His Breed's Spotless Reputation One Quirky Habit at a Time

Thu, 05/28/2026 - 8:48am

Basenjis have a reputation that sounds almost too good to be true. They are often called one of the cleanest dog breeds in the world, famous for grooming themselves like cats, lacking the typical "dog smell," and staying surprisingly tidy around the house.

And then there is Percy, a young basenji who recently changed the whole perspective with a single Reddit post. In a video, we see him enthusiastically digging through muddy ground as if he had just discovered buried treasure.

🐶SIGN UP to get "pawsitivity" delivered right to your inbox with inspiring & entertaining stories about our furry & feathered friends🐾🐾

As dirt flew everywhere, Percy looked thrilled, and his owner captioned it perfectly, "Maybe not basenji quirks, but my basenji has quirks."

The Comment Section Was a Support Group

It turns out Percy is not alone, not even close. One commenter said, "Of course he wants to go inside and roll on all your furniture," probably speaking from experience.

Another shared a story that escalated quickly: "One of mine once found a gelatinized dead sheep carcass. Great gobs of green goo. Oh, did she have a great time rolling around in that until I came up on her. So, their clean nature has its time and place."

The mud reports kept coming. "My Basenji loves digging holes in the lawn after a good rain."

Related: Mischief-Making Schnauzer Sporting Cobalt Collar Is One Proud Boy

Percy's Best Friend Makes the Story Even Funnier

As his dad explained, Percy is still young. That is the reason for his chaotic energy. Adolescent dogs often treat mud puddles like sacred playgrounds.

But the funniest part of all is Percy's friendship with a Poodle. Here is the twist: his [oodle friend hates water. As Percy's dad said, "I think their brains were switched at birth."

While basenjis are known for being cautious around water, sporting breeds like poodles were bred to be water retrievers. Turns out, dogs do ignore stereotypes when they feel like it.

Why Do Dogs Love to Dig?

Dogs dig for more reasons than pet parents realize. The behavior traces back to their wolf ancestry, where wild animals dug to hunt prey in underground dens and create safe spots.

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs still dig to seek out burrowing animals or to cool down by reaching lower soil temperatures during hot weather.

Some breeds are more prone to digging than others. For example, terriers were bred to dig and chase animals in holes.
