Though pet parents don't always pick up on how dogs show love. “Dogs can show their devotion in subtle ways that are often rooted in social bonding,” says Erin Askeland, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, Camp Bow Wow's animal health and behavior expert.

So, while people know dogs who are ready to protect them against an intruder (real and imagined) consider that a sign of dog faithfullness, pet experts say other signs a dog is commited to their owner can be less obvious. Trainers recommend being on the lookout for the quirky dog behaviors below so you can see what your dog’s awkward habits really mean. Once you're able to decode your dog's body language, you'll know how to tell if your dog is devoted to you or not. You may be surprised to learn that they are ways dogs show unwavering loyalty.

It can be a little odd when you’re looking around the room and see your pup staring at you with big heart eyes. If you dog won't look away, take it as a compliment because while it can be a bizzare dog behavior, it means they’re all in with you. “A big sign your dog is devoted is gentle eye contact,” says Elisha Stynchula, CPDT-KA, certified dog trainer and owner of I Said Sit School for Dogs.

Askeland agrees, adding, “A shy, unsure dog is a lot less likely to make direct eye contact.” "When a dog looks at you with relaxed eyes and a loose body, studies show this actually triggers the release of oxytocin, which is the same bonding hormone involved in parent-child attachment.”

There’s a paw on your knee and a nose nudging your hand, which can make it feel like your dog is a physical extension of you. This dog body language is actually a clear sign of dog loyalty and affection, according to Stynchula. “A dog that leans on you and happily accepts scratches and cuddles is showing trust, comfort and attachment,” she says. Walker adds, “Dogs strongly attached to their owners naturally look for ways to stay in touch—literally. They may rest their full weight on your leg, nuzzle your hand for more petting, or lay their head on your lap and shoulder, demonstrating the unique ways dogs show love and loyalty.”

It’s impressive to watch your pup circle their tail so much that it looks like they’ll leave the ground at any moment. This funny and sometimes awkward-looking dog behavior is a good thing. “Dogs that greet you with a big helicopter tail and wiggly body are thrilled to see you and a good sign of devotion,” Stynchula says. Just be on the lookout for greetings that seem desperate, she says—that can be a sign that your dog needs some separation training.

However, overall, this dog behavior is one of the many quirky dog habits that actually reveal how dogs show love, attachment and trust toward their owners.

How dogs show love can be strange at times. While dependable dogs will happily explore their surroundings, they often check back in with their owner. According to Askeland, “When your dog explores but decides to periodically look back at you, it’s a clear sign of dog devotion and affection. This behavior shows your dog trusts you, values you as their home base, and demonstrates the unique ways dogs express loyalty and attachment.”

When it comes to awkward dog habits, walking into the bathroom and seeing you pooch is there waitng on you can be considered one. You may notice them watching you get changed, and you catch them peeking at you around the corner when you’re working from home. A dog following you around and low-key stalking you calmly and quietly from room to room is a ride-or-die dog, according to Askeland. “In canine social groups, closeness equates to increased safety,” she explains. “So they’re staying close to their trusted person to feel safe.”

That's why the next time you realize your furry family member is doing this, you won't be thinking, "Why does my dog follow me?" Instead, you'll know it's a weird sign of dog affection.

Oh, were you standing there? It can feel like your dog is trying to shove you out of the way sometimes when they put their full body weight against you, but Askeland says they’re just trying to get as close as possible. This quirky dog behavior of your pup leaning into you shows your pooch trusts you and is devoted to you. "Having this kind of contact reinforces that your dog feels safe with you," she explains. 

Well, this dog behavior can be awkward—for everyone else. One weird dog behavior that mean they love you can be when devoted dogs ignore other people in order to zero in on their favorite human, aka you. “They prefer your company over others and prioritize your commands over those from other family members,” Walker says. Your loyal pooch may also choose you over other people or opportunities around them, Askeland says. “If you’re in a group of friends and they gravitate towards you for attention even if it’s being offered by others, that’s a sign your pup is devoted to you,” she says.

Marley jumps back like he has just discovered a tiny alien life-form. Then he creeps forward again, tail wagging, before hopping sideways as if he's trying to decide whether the worm is friend, enemy, or some sort of forbidden noodle. He pounces near it, backs away again, snorts at it, and circles around while his dog mom laughs in the background at the dramatic investigation unfolding.

The whole thing has the chaotic energy of someone encountering a bug in their house and not being emotionally prepared for it. People in the comments had a lot to say about the situation, especially because many dogs apparently react to worms in very different ways.

“My dog just rolls on the worms,” one person admitted.

As strange as it seems, many dogs love to roll in worms, dead bugs, or other things with unpleasant smells they find outside.

One very talented dog is hanging up her surfboard after a very successful career in the waves.

Sugar, the famous surfing dog (who has proved herself time and time again in world championships) is now 16 years old and was recently diagnosed with cancer. This means that the part of her life that revolved around surfing is now behind her, so when she went out on the waves one last time before she officially retired, an entire community came together to celebrate her.

Sugar the Surfing Dog rode her last wave over the weekend in Huntington Beacg as the beloved SoCal pup continues battling cancer.

In this news report that an ABC affiliate in LA shared on TikTok, we get to see footage of Sugar surfing for the last time with her dad in Huntington Beach.

She looks just as at home on that surfboard as she always has, and her career has included a lot of major milestones, including becoming the first animal ever to join the Surfer's Hall of Fame.

"I feel like she's created this ripple effect throughout the community and throughout the world that's just unexplainable," her dad told the news cameras.

It certainly seems that way, judging by the number of the people on the beach who had gathered to watch her in the waves. Anyone else crying, or is it just me?

As true creatures of habit, of course many cats get very serious about keeping to their routine. There is no time I get meowed at more than the time of day when my cats know it's time for dinner to be served — it's like clockwork that they both hunt me down in the kitchen, trying to hurry the process along.

On Monday, March 9, this adorable kitty took it upon herself to walk around the house, meowing as loud as she could as her official announcement that bedtime was finally here. There's just one problem, though: Her timing may have been a bit off thanks to daylight savings time.

Well, that, and it sounds like she wanted the exciting thing that comes right before bedtime, too.

"Nonna was telling the whole house it was time for bed," her mom wrote in her caption on the video. "It was only 7 pm but she wanted her night time snack!"

Now, it's all starting to make more sense...

There are plenty of indicators that Nonna is a special cat, but those loud meows are another trait that we should add to the list.

As PetMD points out, Munchkins aren't known for being an especially vocal breed of cats, so the fact that this one likes using her voice makes her personality all the more unique.

Some people also believe that cats become more vocal in their golden years, and since Nonna is a senior kitty, it's totally possible that she's just becoming chatty in her old age. Nothing wrong with that, especially if she's using those powers to remind everyone that it's time for bed.

My Jack Russell, Winnie, has a little perch in my bedroom closet where she’s set up spare blankets and pillows.

The average litter size for cats is typically between three and six kittens, although it can vary depending on the breed and the age of the mother cat. Some litters may only have one kitten, while others can have six or more.

"This can be due to both fear and appeasement and is often accompanied by lower tail carriage and wide eyes."

No, your furry companion isn't telling you they want to go jet-setting. Instead, this dog ear position means your pup is expressing their emotions about something. This is one of the many ways your dog uses their ears to talk to you about their feelings. "When a dog is unsure or feels conflicted about something, the ears may appear wide, pulled quite far to each side," Levy explains. "This is a dog that’s considering its next move and is deciding whether to move forward or back off."

Levy shares that pricked-forward ears are forward-facing and often tilt a smidge down. If you notice your pet doing this, it's another dog ear language you need to be able to decode. What's this dog ear position's mean? "This is a sign of curiosity and attention," Levy shares. "A dog doing this is focused and anticipating something might be about to happen." For instance, if you walk in the direction of their treat bag and so much as touch it, your dog may prick their ears forward with all of the hope in the world.

How to read dog ear body language can come down to guessing sometimes. If you guessed that this ear position means your dog is confused or intrigued, you were right! This is one way how dogs show emotions with their ears since they can't speak. "Two ears facing different ways can in some dogs be a sign of them trying to understand something, usually a different sound than they are used to," Levy says. So, your dog may use the asymmetrical tilt if you bring a newborn home or start listening to some new tunes from a totally different genre than your usual jams.

Dog ear signals and meanings can be confusing to read if you're unfamiliar with them. Of all of the ways your dog uses their ears to talk to you, this one is the subtlest. Blink, and you'll miss the flicker. "Lots of ear flicks can indicate just something annoying touching the dog, such as flies landing around the face," Levy says. "Ear flicks can also occur when lots of different noises are quickly being processed. Emotional state is usually not really a factor here."

If you have two dogs, they may have completely different "relaxed" ear positions. "Neutral ear position annoyingly looks different for different breeds of dog, as some stick straight up, others fold, and there is a ton of variation between these," Levy states.

You can notice the telltale sign that your dog is in neutral gear by tuning in to your pet during low-key moments. "Whatever your dog's ’normal’ is when they are relaxed, is what we would refer to as neutral, and this indicates calm feelings and a lower arousal state," Levy says.

The "tension creep ears" may concern you. Levy explains that this ear signal occurs when a dog's ear slowly moves from a relaxed position to a forward-alert position. So, what are your dog’s ears are telling you when they are in this position? Levy reveals that it's an indication, and the dog may be about to react. "This is a common occurrence in breeds that guard and can indicate an arousal increase," Levy says.
