When Can Kittens Start Eating Solid Food?

As their breeder writes in the video caption, these Maine Coon kittens are eating chicken for the first time as part of their weaning process to start eating solid food.

The transition to solid foods is usually around 4 to 6 weeks of age for Maine Coon kittens, but could even start as young as 3 weeks old.

Wet food like this is good for kittens because their digestive systems are still developing.

By 8 weeks old, Maine Coon kittens should be eating mainly solids, according to Maine Coon cat breeder Sassy Koonz.

They need to be eating solids as they experience rapid growth.

Maine Coon kittens gain about 10 to 15 grams per day, reaching 300 to 400 grams by 2 weeks of age.

This means they double their birth rate in only one week!

Major growth continues between 3 and 4 weeks of age and 4 and 5 weeks, as they start walking, playing, and jumping, and get close to 2 pounds.

As we mentioned, between 4 and 7 weeks old, they start weaning off their mom, eating solids, getting vaccinated, and becoming socialized.

Then, by 8 weeks old, they become real kittens with personalities.

They also start to really look like Maine Coon cats with their lynx-like ears.

Between 9 and 12 weeks of age, females tend to weigh 2 to 4 pounds, and males come in between 2.5 and 5 pounds.

And by week 12, they're ready to leave the litter and go to their forever homes if they're healthy.

The reason provided for Trey's return was shocking, making his circumstances even more tragic.

It's impossible to describe how heartbreaking it feels to watch a paralyzed dog giving life 100% effort despite their physical challenges. Recently, one paralyzed Dachshund named Barry literally yelps with all the joy in his little heart as he realizes his new wheelchair offers the freedom he thought he'd lost. Dog mom Katie captured the most perfect scene ever recorded. The 17-second clip shows Barry, the Dachshund, taking off in his wheelchair and making it known how thrilled he is to be able to run again with those yelps of pure joy!

The sweet boy became paralyzed from stage 5 intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which is the most severe form of IVDD. It causes total paralysis and the loss of deep pain sensation in their limbs. With a critical DPS surgery, some pups go on to live happy lives, but it does require immediate medical attention.

People always say we don't deserve dogs, but this video is exactly why. After surgery nine months ago and plenty of therapy, Barry's tenacity and gratitude for his wheelchair are proof that paralyzed companions still have SO much life left to live. They just need a little help to do it.

Pet Wheelchairs Can Give Paralyzed Dogs a Whole New Lease on Life 

There's no doubt that wheelchairs help dogs find a renewed sense of purpose, but it goes a lot deeper than that. Having new wheels provides much-needed mental and physical stimulation and independence, while equally distributing weight. This is vital for low-slung breeds (like Dachshunds) with inactive limbs, so they don't add more pressure to their backs.

Some things to look out for if considering a wheelchair for your paralyzed dog include:

• Choose the correct type of cart. Rear-limb carts are the most common and help with pups who have paralyzed back legs. Forelimb carts support injured front legs, and a full-body cart is best for a fully paralyzed pup.
• Make sure it fits properly. An adjustable cart is ideal, though custom wheelchair companies like Eddie's Wheels for Pets or K9 Carts can design the perfect fit for your dog. This is great if you have the budget, because disproportionate breeds or those with uniquely shaped bodies can benefit from these.

Anyone who visits Grandma remembers where the treats are kept.

Bentley, the Cockatoo, visits his two grandmas and apparently remembers where the emotional leverage is kept.

In short, little performances, Bentley proves he knows exactly how to work a room. This isn't a casual visit.

Bentley leans into every second like he's been waiting for an audience that truly appreciates his work. The routine is part complaint, part innocent victim act, and part "can you believe what I've been through?" performance. He doesn't need a stage. I totally understand the motives.

My grandma was amazing, and we always got special snacks and treats when we went to her house. If Bentley has learned that grandma visits come with extra attention, softer voices, or the possibility of being fussed over, then he is simply using the ancient grandchild playbook. Walk in, look pitiful, act like no one at home understands you, collect love.

The difference is that most of us didn't do it with feathers and a built-in soundboard.

I think it's hilarious how intentional it all feels. Cockatoos are already famously expressive, but Bentley adds to the kind of timing that makes people pause and say, "Wait, did he plan that?" The looks, the sounds, the pauses all come together like a tiny feathered courtroom statement.

My Pug mix has the most adorable little dance he breaks out at breakfast and dinner. It was a normal bedtime - a night like any other night. Mom came to tuck her daughter in. She pulled back the covers and immediately realized that it definitely wasn't a normal bedtime.

“This often looks like a loose, wiggly body, soft eyes, a gently wagging tail at a natural height and ears in a neutral position,” says veterinarian Nita Vasudevan of Embrace Pet Insurance. “Basically, a happy dog looks comfortable in their body, not on edge,” she says. 

They Have a Playful Spirit

Another happy dog sign to watch out for involves how active they are as depressed or unhealthy dogs aren’t eager to play, which can be heartbreaking. But those who are feeling well will always be up for it.

“Play is one of the clearest signs that a dog is feeling good,” Vasudevan says. “Whether it's chasing a ball, playing tug, initiating games with family members or doing an enthusiastic play bow, a playful attitude reflects both physical health and emotional well-being.”

They Have an Open Mouth

Sometimes your dog’s expression says everything you need to know. That's why one sign your dog is happy has to do with their mouth. “Many dogs have a soft, open mouth and loose lips when they feel happy or settled, almost like a little smile,” shares veterinarian Aimee Warner at Waggel. Talk about a cute behavior dogs do when they’re happy!

Context matters, though. "If your dog is heavily panting or drooling, they could be stressed, anxious, or overheated," Warner explains. "But when their mouth is slightly open, their lips are loose, and the rest of their body looks relaxed, it can tell you that your furbaby feels content and at ease."

They Approach People

Our experts say social and playful pups are typically happy and flourishing dogs.

So if your pup greets people who come into your house or those they spot on the street, consider it a way your dog is telling you that they feel great and are in good spirits.

That’s why vets say understanding your dog and their affectionate behaviors are important so you’ll know when things are off.

They Can Settle Down Easily

Surprisingly, one of the top signs dogs show they’re feeling cheerful and overall doing well is by being able to wind down quickly.

“If your dog can relax and fall asleep easily after exercise or play, it's often a way your dog shows they feel secure and comfortable,” Vasudevan says. So take this as a win if your furbaby does this.

They’re Curious

What makes dog happy? Just being themselves and living their life to the fullest, which involves exploring. So, keep in mind that nosiness is a good dog behavior if you notice yours doing this because dogs won’t normally engage in this activity if they’re not feeling top notch, both physically and emotionally.

“A healthy dog is curious about the world around them,” Vasudevan shares. “They may enjoy sniffing during walks, watching what's happening around the house, responding to familiar sounds and interacting with people or other pets.” 

They Love to Eat

You’ll get to know your dog’s go-to eating habits pretty quickly: Some will scarf their food down the second it hits the bowl, while others are more grazers.

Overall, having a good appetite is a healthy dog sign. “Eating normally, keeping a healthy weight, drinking a normal amount of water and having good energy are all positive signs," Warner points out.

They Have ‘Fluid’ Movements

Another way dogs express how they're feeling and show their emotions include being joyful through their movements.

“Healthy dogs will have fluid movements rather than stiff or tense,” Vasudevan says. "Happy dogs can also transition easily between playtime, activity, and rest without appearing uncomfortable or overwhelmed."

Their tail and overall body language can offer clues, too. “You may also see a bit of a whole-body wiggle,” Warner notes.

Warner agrees, adding, "Dogs are very good at hiding discomfort, so routine appointments can give you reassurance and help pets stay felling well.”

How to Make Your Dog Trust You In Ways They Understand

Seeing how dogs are known to be man's best friend, they always have your back. So, it's natural to want to show them you have their back as well, which all comes down to how much they trust you. Here are a few trainer-recommended ways to strengthen that bond between you and your pet.

Let Them Come to You

How do you know if your dog trusts you? When it comes to your furry companion, trust grows when your dog feels they have a choice, especially when it comes to physical contact. “When a dog feels pressured into physical contact, it can set your relationship back,” Jespersen reveals. “Instead, crouch down, turn slightly sideways and let them approach on their own terms.”

Farah adds that even small interactions can help build trust with your dog when done thoughtfully. One way to do so is by petting your pup for three to five seconds, then pausing to see how they respond. “Do they lean in and ask for more, or do they turn away?” she asks. “Some dogs want to be near you without being touched, and that’s great. If your dog knows that you will let them decide when they want to be touched and then stop when they move away, they will be more likely to want to hang out with you.”

No matter how smart your dog is, they can't always understand every single word you say to them. Sometimes that's why your actions matter more when you're trying to build trust with your dog.

"Chasing your pup around your living room when they grab a sock, shoe or other item they shouldn’t have can feel threatening to them," Jespersen says. “Instead, try a dog trust-building exercise like offering a high-value treat or a favorite toy in exchange. This ‘trade’ approach teaches your dog that giving something up is actually a great deal for them, and it keeps their trust in you fully intact.”

This may take some time, though. “Over time, dogs who learn to trade often bring you things voluntarily,” Farah says. “That's a dog who trusts that you're not out to take things from them.”

One of the most important ways to talk to your dog in their own language and help them feel comfortable around you is with positive reinforement.

In fact, Farah says reward-based training is crucial. “When you do this, for your dog it's your way of saying, ‘I will always kindly guide you toward behaviors that make our life together work for both of us. I will never confuse you by giving you different answers to the same question, and I will never purposely cause you pain or discomfort,’” she explains.

From this, Farah reveals your dog learns to trust that you will help them find the easiest way to earn the reward, so they learn to love their training sessions. This method of training will not only bring you and your dog closer, but it wll also help to build up your pup’s confidence.

Some of the most powerful ways to let your dog know that they can trust you and that you're someone they can depend on doesn't involve anything doing anything difficult. According to trainers, simply being consistent in your actions and following-through helps build a sense of reliability and safety.

“Dogs feel most secure when they know what to expect,” Jespersen says. “Clear, consistent rules and routines let your dog relax into their environment because they always know what's coming next,” she says.

For Farah notes that feeding your dog at the same time each day, using the same cues for walks, and sticking to a predictable routine helps them quickly learn what to expect and builds trust over time. It just goes to show that some of the ways you can make your dog trust you are easier than you might think.

Get Down On Your Dog’s Level Trust-building can come through non-intimidating body language, like getting on their level.

Seeing how you’re much taller than your dog, standing over them can sometimes feel intimidating or even threatening from their perspective. Getting down on their level helps reduce that pressure and makes you appear more approachable, especially to an anxious dog.

“They know that getting on the floor with them inhibits you a bit because you can’t move as fast, or chase them, making you little bit vulnerable," Farah explains. “This allows your dog to trust that they’ll be safe if they approach you.”

Jespersen adds that this for of communication with your dog also signals to your pup that you’re open and approachable, which can help build trust and encourage them to come closer to you on their own terms.

What To Consider Before Taking a Puppy on Outdoor Adventures 

Crumble is having the best time of his life, there's no question about that, and it's so magical to see him experience new things that he'll probably love for the rest of his life. If you have a puppy and you're planning for them to join you on outdoor adventures, there are a few considerations to keep in mind first. 

According to Outside Magazine, the best time to start outdoor adventures with your pup is within the first few weeks after bringing them home. They explain that when your puppy is 3 weeks to 3 months old, they learn a lot and are "like a sponge, soaking up the experiences that will define their personality." If there's one thing most cats love, it's catnip. TikToker Judy (@judyandthecats) is a cat lover who rescues cats and even cares for an entire colony that lives in her yard. She recently came up with one of the most creative neighborhood delivery services we've ever seen by loading dried catnip into the back of a remote-control truck and driving it around for the local felines.

What's even better is that Judy mounted a camera on the tiny delivery truck so she could capture the cats' reactions up close. We thought at least a few of them might ignore it, but within seconds, her eager feline customers came racing over to investigate. Why Cats Go Crazy for Catnip

Commenter @Sandi shared, "I have never had a cat react to catnip. Ever." Believe it or not, not all cats are affected by catnip. But for the ones that are, the herb can trigger some pretty entertaining behaviors.

According to PetMD, "Catnip mimics feline sex hormones, so cats enjoying this substance will often display behaviors similar to a female cat in heat (although both male and female cats can experience the effects)." Those behaviors can include rolling, rubbing, purring, affection, deep relaxation, and even the occasional burst of zoomies. In some cats, however, catnip can also trigger aggression.

PetMD explains that the reaction is caused by a natural compound called nepetalactone, which binds to receptors in a cat's nose. While it's hilarious to watch, the effects are temporary and harmless, typically lasting about 10 to 15 minutes. Then it's back to normal... at least until Judy's catnip delivery truck rolls through the neighborhood again.

Niall Harbison has garnered a huge following online, posting stories of the street dogs he saves through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. Many of these canines come from heartbreaking backgrounds and deal with everything from health issues to fear of human touch. Yet Harbison works magic with these fur babies and shares many joyful transformations on social media.

The animal advocate often names dogs after celebrities. Harbison previously rescued a scared yet sweet dog he named Tom Cruise, and the precious pooch is now thriving.

The Instagram post from @wearehappydoggo told Tom's story and shared how far he's come since his rescue.

"One year ago, he was a terrified street dog who barely trusted us," the on-screen text explained as Tom timidly stepped out of hiding toward his rescuers. "But a year of love changes everything."

Tom received medical care and lots of affection at Happy Doggo, which helped him learn to trust again. He now lives in a neighborhood community that adopted him as their own.

Harbison and his team had to bring Tom in for a medical checkup, refreshing bath, and, of course, an extra special "5-star dinner" of steak and eggs. Tom instantly recognized his Happy Doggo crew when they arrived for his pickup.

"He was so happy to see us," the story continued as Tom literally smiled and wagged his tail nonstop at the sight of his rescuers and got chauffeured to his destination.

Tom Is Now 'Healthy' and 'Deeply Loved'

After a clean bill of health, a beauty bath, and a gourmet meal, Tom was escorted back home wearing a bright bandanna. Viewers may have noticed the canine cutie's "unique" walk, which is caused by an old injury that makes his leg a bit stiff. The Happy Doggo medical team checks it regularly to make sure he doesn't experience any pain.

Harbison noted that, despite the pain of his past, Tom learned to open his heart to others since his rescue.

"He still bears the scars of his past life, but the biggest transformation has been his trust," the caption read. "Clean, full, healthy, and deeply loved."

Rottweilers get a bad rap, and it's one of the things that makes me the angriest. I've never met a Rottweiler who wasn't the sweetest dog ever. As a bit of a downside though, I also have never met one who didn't immediately try to slobber all over my face.

Judah and Piper are the two Rottweilers who live in this house, but the one in this video is Judah. He cares for any and all of the little babies his mom might bring home! He has a huge heart, which is great because it matches his absolutely massive body.

Are Rottweilers Good With Cats?

If you watch just about any movie where dogs are featured and there needs to be a "bad" one, it's almost going to be a Rottweiler. They're portrayed as territorial, mean, and downright dangerous ... But that's not exactly the case.

If you've ever stepped in a puddle five minutes after filling your dog's water bowl, you're not alone. Some dogs somehow manage to drink half the bowl while splashing the other half across the floor, leaving behind soggy mats, soaked socks, and a never-ending cleanup.

Rachel Bellinger, a dog mom, decided she'd had enough. After years of battling wet floors, she put five popular no-spill dog bowls to the ultimate test with the help of her lovable giant pit bull, Blaze.

She set a simple goal: to find out whether any of these bowls actually reduce the mess or are just marketing hype.

Five Bowls and One Motivated Pit Bull

Bellinger tried five different products: the Petmate No-Spill Bowl, the Upsky No-Spill Water Bowl, the Upsky Dog Water Bowl 2L, the Heouvo 1 Gallon Large Dog Water Bowl, and the Twinsing 10L No Spill Dog Water Bowl.

Things start out bad with the Petmate bowl, as Blaze dunked straight through the opening, sending water everywhere. As Bellinger mentioned in the video, "That's just as flooded as if I didn't have the cappy thingamabob."

The Heouvo bowl performed well, earning the middle spot. The best thing about it is it holds a lot of water.

The winner was the Upsky Dog Water Bowl 2L. This one had no clip, and the clear wall lets pet parents see exactly how much water is left. Splash was minimal when Blaze drank from it. The design has a small lip around the edge that catches some of the splashing water.

"I think it's just the right size where the water wouldn't get too gross before it ran out," said Bellinger during her verdict.

Dog Parents Had Plenty of Ideas

The comments section filled quickly with more practical suggestions.

One person mentioned using a raised water bowl because dogs drip less when they lift their heads. Another recommendation is to place a rubber shoe mat underneath the metal bowl.

And some couldn't stop laughing at Blaze, with one saying, "Blaze popping his head down in front of the camera every time you put yours down to talk was so funny. He's such a character."

Why Do Dogs Leave Mess in the First Place

Dogs do not sip. They use their tongues to drink, curling them backward into their mouth and flinging water with each stroke.

Large dogs do it faster and with even more force, splashing even more water when they walk away. Blaze's mom tried everything before, including silicone mats, plastic trays, bath mats, and even paper towels under the bowl.

But nothing solved the problem. She still had standing water on her floor and a slip hazard that can strike at any moment.

How Do No-Spill Bowls Work

Unlike standard water bowls, no-spill bowls use a floating plate or disc that exposes only a small amount of water at a time.

As dogs drink, the floating plate slowly drops, allowing more water to come through. Dogs cannot put their entire face into the bowl, resulting in less splashing.
