If you've ever been charged by an unleashed dog while walking your own, you know how unsettling the moment can feel. It's something that's happened to me more than once, and it happened again over the weekend when a loose Goldendoodle came charging toward my 29-pound French Bulldog mix, barking loudly in a sudden ambush.

Thankfully, I was able to turn away, scoop up my little dog, and lift her to safety while the Doodle's dad rushed in to hook the leash. Still, those few seconds were enough to make my heart stop.

So when dog trainer Tom Davis shared a video the very same day about dealing with a similar situation, I immediately stopped scrolling. His experience sounded a lot like mine, and it's something many of us fear when walking our dogs.

In the clip, Davis explains what happened when a loose dog approached while he was out with his own puppy, a BoerboelMastiff. Even with a large breed, the moment can feel tense, and no pet parent wants to see a confrontation unfold.

Davis says the first line of defense is strong obedience training. Dogs that understand and reliably follow commands are far easier to manage in stressful situations. He explains that having control of your own dog can make a big difference when another animal suddenly approaches.

Next, he stresses the importance of getting loud if a loose dog is heading your way. Yelling, clapping, or making noise can alert the other pet parent that something is happening while also sometimes startling the approaching dog enough to make them hesitate.

Davis also acknowledged a difficult reality that many pet parents hope they never face. In rare situations where an aggressive dog is actively attacking, and there is no way to escape, he notes that for dogs capable of defending themselves (not a tiny terrier or a young puppy), allowing them to do so may sometimes be the safest and most humane option. No pet parent ever wants it to come to that, but stepping in physically can sometimes put both our dog and us at greater risk.

As Davis points out, experiences like this can also shape how young dogs react to others in the future. A frightening encounter can sometimes lead to lasting fear or reactivity if a puppy begins to associate other dogs with danger.

That's something I've seen firsthand. My larger 80-pound Rescue Dog has been charged by off-leash dogs several times now, and despite plenty of training and positive reinforcement, those experiences have left him wary.

In the end, Davis says awareness is key. If you notice a loose dog heading your way, turning around and creating distance is often the safest move. And if that's not possible, staying calm, keeping control of your own pup, and making enough noise to draw attention to the situation may help prevent things from escalating.

For many pet parents, it's a reminder that even routine walks can take an unexpected turn, and that being prepared can make all the difference.

It's the chomping of the water that makes this too good—you can feel his excitement! He did eventually get on track and do the exercises needed to help his joints, but at least he knows how to turn a challenge into a game. The rescue Golden Retriever must be a surf dude at heart because he's in his element here.

Fans of Duke are already aware of the funny things this good boy gets into. Between stealing trash cans, bottles of bubbly, and even emotional support lamps he takes to his bed, there's no doubt his muscles and joints need some love. Thanks to Punch the monkey and his adorable stuffed BFF taking over the internet, zoos around the U.S. have re-evaluated what enrichment looks like for their animals, venturing into the world of stuffed animals.

One zoo went as far as to see if its silverback gorillas would respond positively to having a stuffy of their own. The San Antonio Zoo, of course, shared its experiment with the rest of the world by posting the video—their silverbacks' slightly puzzled, yet definitely offended reaction to its X account.

Silverback Gorilla Gives His Unabridged Thoughts on Stuffed Animals

The video opens with one of the handlers standing above the gorilla enclosure, holding everyone's favorite childhood monkey, Curious George. Since you cannot go into the enclosure with the silverbacks, the handler gives George a gentle toss into the habitat.

The adorable stuffed toy lands a couple of feet away from their large silverback. Now, you never know how gorillas are going to react to things being dropped in their enclosures, which is why the public is cautioned from doing the same thing. However, no one could have predicted his reaction to the stuffed monkey that was now joining him in his home. 

The gorilla took one look at George lying on the grass and shot the handler a look that could only have meant, "And why would I want this?" Of course, the hilarity didn't stop there. The silverback glanced back at George, almost as if he was wondering if it was going to get up and do something. He shot yet another puzzled look at his handler.

The internet had a field day in the comments, predicting what all those quizzical looks from the gorilla might mean. One fan writes, "The look up like 'Are you mocking me?'" He truly looks like he thought the handler was messing with him.

Other fans suggest it just has to be a larger stuffed animal, or maybe a smaller primate, to have the same effect as Punch and his beloved IKEA monkey.

The zoo's handlers didn't stop there with their shenanigans, though. They had to see if the other, smaller gorillas would like Curious George, too. This time, Curious George was dropped off inside the enclosure, perched on a rock.

However, the second experiment sadly had a similar result. The gorillas wanted nothing to do with their stuffed visitor. Unfortunately for us, they barely gave him the time of day. Poor little George got a side glance and a quick exit in the opposite direction.

The best part was the stuffed animal tumbling over, seemingly out of exasperation. The poor guy didn't get any love from the primates in San Antonio Zoo's Congo Falls.

There is nothing like that first cup of coffee in the morning.

For some people, it is their main motivation for waking up.

Not much is better than that first hot cup, except having your adorable canine companion with you.

Most people think of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as a place for massive livestock competitions, cowboy hats, amazing performances, and maybe a funnel cake or two. But tucked away inside the giant event is a tiny, fluffy competition that might actually steal the whole show.

Every year, the rodeo hosts a bunny costume contest, and judging by the videos making the rounds online, it might be one of the cutest events you didn’t know existed.

The video shows an entire parade of rabbits and guinea pigs dressed in elaborate costumes, while their humans stand beside them in coordinating outfits and themed backdrops.

And the creativity is honestly impressive.

One rabbit is dressed as a full Dairy Queen Blizzard cup, complete with the classic red logo. The costume is so convincing that for a second, it genuinely looks like someone set a giant cup of ice cream on the stage.

Another bunny appears in an entire football stadium setup representing Texas A&M, while a different rabbit shows up ready for Mardi Gras.

Then there’s the guinea pig dressed as a butterfly garden, complete with flowers and a monarch butterfly perched on their back.

And one especially dramatic bunny arrives in a full shark costume while a lifeguard-themed handler stands nearby like they’re about to patrol the beach.

Viewers in the comments had a very hard time choosing a favorite.

“I’m sorry, but they are ALL winners,” one person wrote.

Another joked, “That one rabbit was dressed up as a guinea pig. Very convincing!”

One person imagined the bunny’s inner voice: “Damn it, Susan. I have a doctorate in agriculture and a master’s in field management. Why am I a shark?”

About the rabbit contest specifically, RodeoHouston.com explains, "The competition began over 15 years ago, and the initial show had only four entries. There's no doubt that our pets are also children, and we'd do anything to make sure they're happy, healthy, and thriving. He started with whining, before bringing toys to play with. As you can see in the video shared on Reddit, it's still dark outside, but for this dog, that doesn't mean anything.

In his mind, breakfast is late, walks are late, and playing with his toys is one hour late as well. This is normal in most pet households. Dogs and cats rely heavily on routine. Their internal clock tracks regular patterns of feeding, activity, and sleep.

We can change the clock, but pets do not automatically adjust to it.

Archer, the Siberian Husky, did not approve of the changes to his dinner menu. While his dad tried to justify the substitute treats, the stoic pup made it obvious he expected better. To clarify, this "dinner" was actually his breakfast, which had been sitting in his bowl all day because the particular pup wasn't interested. The video alternated hilariously between his untouched bowl of food with sub-par "snicky-snacks" and Archer looking annoyed (albeit very handsome).

While his dad tried to explain that he was out of Archer's favorite pork shoulder treats, the pup remained unimpressed. Not even the introduction of chicken liver could snap him out of his dinner-related depression (although he did muster enough energy for an unenthusiastic high five). The video ended with Archer refusing yet another treat, dropping it on the floor, and giving his human a look of absolute disgust."

Nouri was out for her usual walk and strolled near a farm. A large, brown horse was leaning over the wooden fence to enjoy a snack of grass when the two took notice of each other.

At first, Nouri was doing her routine sniffing of the ground and saw the horse's very big muzzle chomping into the grass. The perplexed Pom was taken aback and jumped around, barking in surprise.

"I went for a walk… accidentally met a horse. Not sure who was more confused," the TikTok caption from @nourithepom shared.

The horse was completely calm and extended his neck to warmly greet the visiting pooch. He seemed more than happy to show Nouri his gentle side and was patient with the Pom's initial trepidation.

Once Nouri saw the horse's effort to become friends, she trusted his kindness and got closer. Soon, the two were rubbing noses like they'd known each other for years.

Willow and Cirrus love each other most of the time, but as the caption says, they're just a couple of very aggressive butterballs. The cause of this fight seems to have been that Willow was literally standing on her brother's head. Why? Because it looked fun, probably.

Mouse is a beautiful Blue Bicolor Ragdoll living in Los Angeles, California, with his mom. He gets everything he wants on account of how handsome he is. It's almost impossible to tell those pretty eyes no!

Most of all, though, Mouse wants coconut oil. It's his favorite snack, though it's a rare treat. That's why, when he finds some, he clings to it as Rose clung to that door in Titanic.

Mouse wouldn't care if coconut oil was toxic; that's how much he loves it. Lucky for him, though, coconut oil is fine for cats, and it's actually beneficial!

Coconut oil is great for:

• Reducing hairballs.
• Improving overall skin and coat health.
• Moisturizing dry/cracked skin.

If you're going to give your cat coconut oil, it should be in small amounts: no more than a half teaspoon per day, but smaller cats should have even less. Since it's so fatty, coconut oil could potentially cause issues like weight gain or pancreatitis.
