She's not hiding that she's not happy about it. She's sitting there with the energy of someone who's been deeply betrayed and would like to speak to the manager of this institution.

The side eye is serious. The pout is real. The sulk is world class.

First: you're not alone. According to PetMD, this is one of the most common things dogs do and it's got an entire list of reasons behind it that have nothing to do with your dog being broken or bad.

PetMD explains that dogs eat poop for both normal and not-so-normal reasons. On the normal side: instinct. Research from 2018 suggests dogs may have inherited this instinct from wolves who ate fresh feces to keep their dens clean. That’s a bit extreme. Then there's the less expected reasons: anxiety, wanting attention, fear of being punished for accidents or medical issues like intestinal problems or nutritional deficiencies. So sad.

If your dog suddenly starts doing this as an adult and has never done it before, PetMD says that it's worth a vet visit to rule out any underlying health issues.

For dogs where it's behavioral the fix is actually pretty simple once you know what you're doing. Go outside with your dog every time they go. The second they're done with their business, call them over and give them a high-value treat. Then, clean up immediately - while they're focused on the reward. No access means no opportunity.

PetMD also recommends teaching a solid "leave it" cue for those moments when you just can't get there fast enough. Use positive reinforcement throughout. Never punishment which can make anxiety-driven cases significantly worse.

Probiotics can sometimes help too if the behavior is connected to gut issues but PetMD is clear they don't work by changing the taste of the poop itself.

Noodle's Veil of Shame is doing its job. Her snacks have been confiscated. Her side eye hasn't softened one bit.

Their low-shedding coats can also be a bonus for seniors with allergies. However, since Standard Poodles require regular physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and well-balanced, an active retiree is the best fit.

These popular dogs are also highly trainable and often develop excellent leash manners with consistent guidance. The main consideration is their size, especially during adolescence, as a larger, strong dog may be harder to manage.

Because of this, Jespersen notes that seniors with limited grip strength or balance concerns may want to consider a smaller breed for added safety. However, for those comfortable with a larger dog, the Golden Retriever is a loyal and deeply devoted companion.

Muscovies are VERY vocal ducks, and Nanci dove right into the conversation with everyone. It’s so sweet watching new friendships form! Nanci’s story: Nanci was hit by a car and then found by teenagers who started harassing her. She was so injured she couldn’t walk. We can’t imagine how scared this sweet little duck was in that situation. Fortunately someone who cared was able to get her to safety. They cared for her, treated her injuries, and made sure she got healthy again. They wished they could continue caring for Nanci, but did not have the space to keep her. Luckily we had room to welcome this brave little girl ❤️

Nanci had been through so much before arriving at the sanctuary. She was hit by a car, then found by teenagers who began harassing her while she was injured and unable to walk. It's hard to even picture how frightened she must have been in that moment: hurt, stuck, and surrounded by people who weren't helping.

Thankfully, someone who cared stepped in.

Nanci was brought to safety, treated, and given time to heal. The people who helped her wanted to keep caring for her, but they didn't have enough space. Luckily, the Woodstock Sanctuary did, and this brave little duck got the second chance she needed.

In the video, Nanci is finally cleared to join the big duck barn after her tests come back clean. The caption says she's meeting her new friends for the first time, and the moment is pure duck joy.

She walks in, and the whole place seems to wake up.

The post caption explains that Muscovies are very vocal ducks, and Nanci apparently wasted no time joining the discussion. That may be my favorite part. She doesn't just quietly enter the group. She dives right into the conversation like she has updates, questions, and possibly some opinions about how her week has been.

The other ducks have plenty to say, too. There's chatter. There's movement. There are little wagging tails everywhere, which one commenter noticed immediately. If you've never thought of ducks as impressive, this video makes a strong case that you should.

Watching Nanci greet everyone is pretty cute on its own, but knowing that she survived makes it feel even more special. She went from being hurt and scared on the side of the road to standing in a barn full of other rescued ducks, surrounded by noise, curiosity, and the beginning of new friendships.

That's the kind of animal rescue story that touches my soul.

It's small and soft and full of life returning to normal. A duck gets to heal. A duck gets to be safe. A duck gets to be loud with other ducks.

How To Help an Injured Duck Safely

If you find an injured duck or other wild bird, it's natural to want to help right away. The safest thing you can do is keep the animal calm, contained, and away from further danger while contacting someone trained to care for wildlife or birds.

The RSPCA shares that injured wild animals should be handled carefully and taken to a vet, wildlife rehabilitator, or rescue organization when needed.

A few smart steps:

• Move slowly and stay quiet.
• Use a towel or a box if it's safe.
• Keep the animal warm, (in the) dark, and calm.
• Don't offer food or water right away.

There was some debate about whether she's a Russian Blue or a Chartreux; the verdict is leaning toward a Chartreux.

They tend to be mistaken for each other due to them both having gray-blue coats, but the eye color usually reveals which is which breed.

Chartreux cats typically have orange eyes (in a range of gold to copper), while Russian Blues usually have bright green eyes.

Another clue is that the Chartreux cat tends to be a bit sturdier, while the Russian Blue has a bit more of a long, balletic body.

The Chartreux cat is considered pretty rare.

The French breed has been around for hundreds of years, but was almost obliterated during World War II, according to Daily Paws.

Through breeding programs, the Chartreux cat made a comeback, but it's still considered low in numbers compared to other cat breeds.

Due to their rarity, they can cost up to $1,500. So the fact that this one is up for adoption is very special.

They are known to be calm, friendly, and great for families.

TikToker @ponyoandluna_ shared a video of the sibling Ragdoll cats who look very similar to each other. They both have the signature Ragdoll look with fluffy white fur and bright blue eyes, plus the shadow color on their ears and tails. 

But there's one easy way to tell the difference between them once they start chattering. Ponyo and Luna's meows are very different from each other, despite looking almost identical and growing up in the same household; their cute voices are unique.

Ponyo, on the left of the screen, has a scratchy voice that sounds like she's been up too late at a club with really loud music. Then there's Luna, who has a very high-pitched meow, but so quiet you can't really hear her well unless you turn up the volume. Both are adorable, and I could listen to each of them chatter all day.

In the comments, people showered the sibling duo with love, which makes sense because they're both so adorable.

Why Every Cat Has a Unique Meow

There's no confusion about which of the two Ragdoll cats is Ponyo and which is Luna, even in the dark, because their meows are so different. 

Why? Well, the simplest reason why cats' meows sound different is that they just do, as people's voices vary from one to the next. Hill's Pet explains that cats meow by moving air from their lungs through their vocal cords, producing the sound. It's simpler for kitties than for people because our brains are so different, but the mechanism is pretty much the same.

Variations between cats are totally normal, but Vetster explains that if your cat's meow suddenly sounds different from their typical voice, there could be something more going on. Some changes could include hoarseness that wasn't there before, a change in pitch that sounds lower or higher than usual, or a complete loss of the ability to meow. Those are all signs that it's a good idea to check in with your vet, just to be sure all is OK. 

But if your kitty has always been chatty or has a uniquely sounding meow, you can enjoy the conversations!

Orange Cats Are Known to Be Quirky

It turns out the orange cat reputation isn't just internet folklore — there's actual science behind why they seem to march to the beat of their own drummer, and it's more interesting than you might expect.

For starters, most orange cats are male. The gene responsible for that distinctive coat color is sex-linked, meaning it's far more likely to be expressed in males than in females. And while the research isn't definitive, male cats do tend to skew slightly friendlier than females, which may go a long way toward explaining why orange cats have earned their reputation as the social butterflies of the cat world.

But there's more to it than gender. A study published in the journal Behaviour and highlighted by Psychology Today found that orange male cats tend to be larger, more physically dominant, and more likely to engage in risky behaviors. The theory is that their bold, dominant personalities give them a higher social status, which in turn makes them more confident about approaching humans, who would send a more timid cat running in the other direction.

In other words, the orange cat who walks into a room as if he owns it and immediately makes himself comfortable on a stranger's lap isn't being presumptuous. He's just being exactly who he is — a cat whose entire personality is wired toward confidence, sociability, and a complete lack of hesitation. Some cats see a situation and assess the risk. Orange cats see a situation (like lounging beneath a menacing fireworks display) and proceed.

Which, honestly, explains a lot.

Some dogs are just natural love bugs. They love to snuggle with their family members and furry friends any chance they get. My Pug mix literally sits on top of people (and his fur baby sister) because he considers himself the king of the canine cuddlers. He isn't happy unless he's close to his loved ones.

The TikTok from @vintagepetrescue caught Jellybean trying to get close to Fiona, one of his canine companions, while she was relaxing in a dog bed. Apparently, the rescue organization is keeping track of Jellybean's attempts at getting a snuggle partner.

"On today's episode of Jellybean's Cuddle Cam, Jellybean tries to sneak in a cuddle with Fiona, our most timid resident," the on-screen text read as the adorable Min Pin nonchalantly angled himself closer to Fiona, who sensed his presence and looked to see who was around.

Jellybean was quite impressive with his slow and stealth approach, doing his best not to be noticed as he angled himself for a snuggle. But Fiona caught on immediately and bolted up from her cozy position. She walked away, leaving Jellybean alone in the dog bed.

The cuddly canine took the rejection in stride and decided to take a nap, most likely to rethink his strategy after catching some Zs.

Fiona Had a Change of Heart

A few moments later, Fiona strolled back over to the dog bed. She obviously thought the situation over and realized the heartwarming charm of Jellybean's invitation to snuggle. Though she didn't make fur-to-fur contact, Fiona curled up close enough to Jellybean to let him know he had a friend nearby.

Maybe Fiona will work up to a full-on cuddle, but for now, these two fur babies started a wonderful friendship.

The Parrot Lady is lucky to have Sweet Pea, the Cockatoo. Sure, she also has a regular dog (Copper, who is Sweet Pea's best friend, can you tell?), but Sweet Pea's barking is much more intimidating. And honestly, I'd be a little more worried about Sweet Pea's bite!

She's actually a very sweet bird: she's a rescue. When she made it to her forever home, she'd been so stressed out that she plucked out all of her chest feathers. She still does, sometimes, but Wendy makes sure she's wearing a protective cover.

Why Do Some Cockatoos Bark?

Sweet Pea learned to bark from her Black Lab brother. She's also learned how to say a bunch of words and make a ton of sounds. There's never a dull moment with her, especially when she's a little angry!

Cockatoos will often pick up barking from the family dog, if you have one, and they might even try to replicate the context. For example, they might run to the window and "bark" when your dog does. If you don't have a dog, though, they may still learn to bark from:

Sweet Pea learned to bark straight from the source, and one thing is for sure: she's never going to stop. That's probably for the best!

The Dog Who Needed Time

When Life Was Improving, Jack Suffered Another Blow

As Jack gained confidence, he suffered a devastating setback. In November last year, he developed gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat.

It is a serious emergency, especially for deep-chested breeds like Bernese mountain dogs. Recovery was slow, but once again, Jack showed his resilience.

Weeks turned into months, but the frightened dog who once needed medication for car rides began jumping into vehicles with excitement. He learned that car rides meant adventures. The strangers he once feared became new friends.

How a Rescue Dog Became an Internet Favorite

The Goodlin family started the Good Hype during the COVID-19 pandemic. The idea was to share cute videos of the family's rescue dogs. Now, the platform helps dogs get a second chance. When Jack was ready for adoption, they partnered with Underdog Heroes to find him a perfect match.

His story touched millions, and fans couldn't be happier. One wrote, "I can't IMAGINE giving up a family member after six years. Thank you for giving him time to heal."

Another added, "Couldn't have happened to a sweeter pup or without your love and care."

Jack is now living with a family in Oregon. There, he found a new best friend, a dog named Skye.

Does 'Time-Out' Work for Cats?

Misha got put in time-out because she couldn't play nice with her brother. She was still able to slip her paws under the door, and Rory made sure to hold her paw the whole time. I would be willing to bet that this is exactly what happens every time one of them gets put in time-out!

Time-outs can be a good tool for living with cats, but the discipline needs to be used correctly. While you should never put a cat in time out aggressively, or for an extended period of time, a time-out can help:

• Disrupt their bad behavior
• Reset their mindset
• Calm them down, especially if they're acting up because of overstimulation

Try putting them in time-out in a quiet place, like a bedroom or a bathroom, for no more than about 10 minutes at a time. When they come out, they'll feel better!

Finding baby bats on the side of a home isn't something most people expect. Yet several wildlife enthusiasts in the comments pointed out that the timing made perfect sense.

Around the Fourth of July, wildlife rehabilitation groups often see an increase in disoriented birds and bats. Loud fireworks can disrupt their normal navigation and temporarily separate young animals from their usual roosts.

One commenter explained that bats often end up resting in unusual places during the day after fireworks displays because they're exhausted and trying to recover.

Another recalled a more tragic experience, walking through a city center after a fireworks celebration and seeing dead birds scattered throughout the streets, saying it completely changed how they viewed large fireworks displays.

These three pups were lucky. They found a wall, stayed together, and rested.

Why These Visitors Are Actually Great News

Several commenters were quick to point out something worth knowing about having bats nearby. Bats are great for preventing mosquitoes. One commenter said, "make them a cute bat house, to live in, they eat lots of mosquitos."

Another added, "As someone who is horribly sensitive to mosquito bites, I strongly support all the critters who like to feast on them."

If mosquitoes are an issue where you live, building a bat house might not be a bad idea. After all, the science backs it up.

What to Do If You Find Bats on Your Property

If bats are resting on your wall and appear uninjured, leave them alone. They will move on once they have recovered, typically within a day.

Do not handle them with your bare hands. Bats can carry rabies, and while transmission to humans requires direct contact, usually a bite, the risk is real enough to be cautious.

If you notice a bat on the ground that cannot fly, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation center or the state's fish and wildlife agency for guidance.

This family did everything right. They watched the bats from a distance, photographed them, and then allowed them to rest, recover, and eventually leave the property.

In those first weeks of their lives, kittens get all their nutrients from nursing or, in certain cases, kitten formula they are bottle fed. And just like we see in human newborns, sometimes, this can result in being a little "milk drunk." It's like their formula is the best thing they've ever tasted (even though it's technically the only thing they've ever tasted).

But then, there's this tiny Maine Coon kitten, who made such a face while she was eating that she looked like she was sent into another dimension.

This sweet kitten (who is absolutely stunning with those different colored eyes and that orange color mixed in with her face) was drinking her milk out of a bowl one minute, and the next, she was staring straight ahead like she had really seen some things in that bowl.

The other kittens around her kept eating, but it's like she couldn't get over what she just saw long enough to go back to her milk. Maybe she can see the future?!

In any event, everyone in the comments is obsessed with her sweet little face. "Stared too long into the milk. They licked the bowl, and the bowl licked back," one commenter wrote.

Formula Is a Lifeline for Young Kittens

Under ideal circumstances, kittens would nurse from their mama cat until it was time for them to be weaned and eat kitten food, but of course, that's not always possible, and that's where formula comes in.

Kittens can be bottle fed if they are separated from (or abandoned by) their mothers, though it's quite a commitment for anyone who is caring for them. According to Best Friends Animal Society, kitten formula is necessary, since these babies can't properly digest cow's milk — not to mention the fact that it doesn't contain all the nutrients they need to thrive.

The best formula to feed kittens will be called Kitten Milk Replacement, or KMR, and in the first few weeks of their lives, they're going to be eating quite frequently; typically about every few hours, just like human babies.

Around the time they turn four weeks old, they're ready to start the weaning process, but it may take some kittens up to eight weeks to be fully on kitten food.

One quiet walk. Ten terrifying seconds. That is how close a shelter volunteer was to losing his life to an aggressive dog.

A shelter volunteer shared his story on Reddit's r/AnimalShelterStories. He explained how he owes his life to the goofy rescue dog who refused to leave his side when danger came charging toward them.

Forrest is the hero in the story, an affectionate shelter dog known for giving hugs, chasing squirrels, and acting like the happiest dog in the building.

A Walk to Remember

One afternoon, the volunteer took Forrest on a routine walk to a small meadow a couple of blocks from the shelter. It was one of Forrest's favorite spots, with plenty of tall grass, old burrows to sniff and a bare patch of dirt to roll around in.

But when they rounded the corner, they saw another volunteer sitting in a sunny spot along the path. Another dog, Dan, was beside her, while she was on her phone; however, Dan's leash was not in her hands.

"I can still see it clear as day. Dan immediately got up as soon as he saw me and Forrest. His eyes were all beady and he makes a loud rumbling sound, and then his mouth opened and he started running toward me," the Redditor explained.

In those moments, he thought that was it and froze.

Forrest Had a Different Read on the Situation

Forrest's initial reaction was something he often does when he sees another dog: bouncing and making happy squeaking sounds. Dan was his friend. But then, he figured out what was happening.

In a moment, the dog who had never growled at another dog stepped in front of his volunteer and snarled. Both dogs lunged, and the other volunteer, now off her phone, grabbed Dan's leash and yanked him.

Everything happened within ten seconds, and Forrest managed to help his human.

Walking Shelter Dogs Takes More than Good Intentions

Stories like this one show something that many people do not realize until it is too late. Walking rescue dogs is not the same as taking your own dog.

Many rescue pups carry emotional baggage that you might not see at first glance. Some have experienced neglect or abuse. Sometimes, even the friendliest dogs can react unpredictably when frightened or overly stimulated. That is why shelters take time to prepare volunteers before handing over the leash.

Five Lessons Shelter Volunteers Should Know

Proper training can reduce the chance of dangerous situations. In this case, the problem was a breakdown in communication between the shelter and its volunteers.

Volunteers should read the dog's behavior profile before approaching the dog. Every dog should have a documented behavior assessment. This gives you an idea of fear triggers, leash reactivity, resource guarding, and everything in between.

Be sure to learn the shelter's color or flag system. Many rescues use a system to signal how much handling experience a dog needs. Green usually means any volunteer can walk the dog. Yellow means proceed with caution, and red means experienced handlers only.

A good idea is to co-walk every new dog before going solo. That means walking a dog alongside a trained staff member or experienced volunteer. It gives you an idea of how the dog moves, behaves and reacts to other dogs.

When in public, keep two hands on the leash. The standard grip is one hand near the collar, and the other holding the loop. For dogs over 40 pounds or with a history of reactivity, a shorter leash gives you more control.

Lastly, learn what to do if an off-leash dog charges toward you. For most people, the initial instinct is to run, which can trigger prey drive and make things worse. The better response is to stop moving, turn sideways to reduce your profile, and avoid direct eye contact.

Many dogs understandably have a difficult time coping with the chaotic environment of a shelter, especially if they've spent most of their lives in a home. Canines sometimes end up in a shelter through no fault of their own, and the traumatic transition causes them to feel fearful, confused, and abandoned.

Kittens, even larger breeds like the Maine Coon, spend the first several weeks of their lives exclusively breastfeeding. Their baby teeth come in over the course of several weeks: feeding them regular food in their first few weeks isn't just unnecessary. It's downright dangerous.

Eventually, though, you do need to introduce them to solid foods. The best way to do that is to make the transition gradual: blending their food, then making it chunkier incrementally until they can tolerate it whole. Recently, a couple of Maine Coon kittens tried chicken for the first time:

Greek Garden Maine Coons knows what they're doing when it comes to kitten care. These kittens are about 7 weeks old, meaning they'll be headed off to their forever homes soon, and it's time to start weaning them. Chicken is the best way to do that, apparently!

It looks like they boiled a couple of chicken breasts in plain water and then blended it all together. They most likely waited for it to cool completely (or at least almost completely) before letting the kittens get some, just to be safe.

Given the fact that kittens groom themselves by licking, I feel like this messy kitten was just saving some of the chicken for later. I love that she's thinking for the future! Whoever gets to take this girl home is getting a very smart kitty!

What to Feed Kittens

In the first few weeks of their lives, kittens need to eat breast milk or, in the case of kittens who don't have a mother, formula, exclusively. They can't chew, and anything else probably wouldn't be able to meet their nutritional needs. However, that doesn't last forever.

When kittens are old enough to begin weaning, you have a few options for what to feed them. The base of their diet should be a kitten-specific food, since that will contain everything to meet their actual nutritional needs. Beyond that, though, you could try:

• Blended chicken.
• Plain, no-salt-added canned tuna.
• Steamed and mashed pumpkin, especially if they're constipated.
• Plain scrambled eggs.

Make sure not to feed them much of any of these: they should mostly be eating regular kitten food, mixed with kitten milk replacer at first, but gradually transitioning to just the wet food as time goes on. There's nothing more important than making sure they eat what they need!

The rule was crystal clear. No more pets. However, the rule didn't account for the existence of baby potato burritos. This was an oversight.

The TikTok from @emac.bulldogs opens with a caption that explains everything and absolutely nothing simultaneously: "Little too much filling in this burrito for a nice wrap 😂😂" 

What follows is a full cooking tutorial. The ingredient is an English Bully puppy with squishy cheeks, pink toe beans and baby snores who is currently wrapped like the world's cutest little potato and has absolutely no objections.

Here's how to make a baby potato burrito.

First, place your tortilla down on a flat surface. Next, take your baby potato and place it carefully on top of the tortilla. Be careful not to spill too much of the baby potato outside the tortilla. Once your baby potato is in place you're going to grab both sides and wrap them up.

Sometimes there's too much baby potato filling and you can't wrap them up properly. Just do your best to keep as much inside as possible.

No baby potatoes were harmed in the making of this burrito.

This particular baby potato is round, compact, peacefully napping and deeply unbothered by any of this. He's the chonkiest possible candidate for the burrito format and he's leaning into it fully.

The husband's rule had no mention of burritos. It also had no provision for the science behind why this works so well on puppies.

Why Swaddling Your Puppy Is Actually Good for Them

Turns out wrapping a puppy snugly in a blanket isn't just completely adorable. There's a reason it actually works and it goes back further than you'd think.

According to Lucky Puppy, it all comes down to deep pressure — basically a gentle snug wrap that helps the body calm down. It's the same principle behind swaddling our human babies. Dr. William Sears describes it as one of the most time-tested baby-calming techniques because the wrapped feeling reminds infants of being safely held in the arms of someone who loves them.

For dogs it works the same way. Lucky Puppy explains that wrapping gently helps the body shift into rest mode, easing breathing, loosening muscle tension and bringing heart rate down. All from a blanket wrapped in just the right way.

The key word is snug not tight. Lucky Puppy is clear that the wrap needs to feel like a supportive hug not a restriction. Checking it every few minutes matters too since a wrap that feels comfortable at first can shift and get loose.

For English Bully puppies specifically this technique fits especially well. Their naturally calm and easy disposition means they're less likely to resist and more likely to just settle in and enjoy the cuddle. Add their compact round shape, their squishy cheeks and their apparent commitment to napping through anything and they're honestly just shaped for this.

There are products available that work on the same deep pressure idea for dogs who need ongoing anxiety support. But for a sleepy little potato on a casual Tuesday a blanket works just fine.

Running errands is a lot more fun with your four-legged family members along... even if they can't join us every time we get out of the car. If the temperature is cool and you're just going to be five minutes, it might be easier to run in and out without them.

But if your dog has major FOMO like the Pit Bull in the video below clearly does, you might want to rethink those plans. When his parent was headed into a Sunoco convenience store, this dog simply assumed that he was invited, too.

This security footage shared by @halfmoonsunoco shows the Pit Bull slipping out of the parked car as soon as his dad opened his door. And for the split second his back was turned, the dog quickly made his way inside.

It's too funny to see the dog jump right out of the car and stroll through the door like he goes there every day, and meanwhile, his parents were so confused!

Even more security footage that was taken from inside the store shows this Pit Bull walking around like he owns the place, sniffing around for treats.

His family was so relieved when they found him. His little adventure must have given them quite a scare!

Keeping Dogs Safe in Cars

Fortunately, this Pit Bull wasn't in any danger, but of course, it's usually not ideal for a dog to be able to jump out of their humans' car like this. Safety is key anytime you're traveling with your dog, whether it's a road trip or a quick stop at the gas station.

According to what experts told the New York Times, an unrestrained dog in a car is dangerous for both the dog and the humans who are in it. Not only can they provide a distraction to the driver, but they could also become a projectile in a crash — that would be horrifying. And even in a minor fender bender, the airbags deploying could seriously injure your pup.

The safest place for your dog to be in the car is a crate or a crash tested harness, and you'll want to make sure that the crate or harness is secured to the seat with an anchor strap. If you cannot anchor the crate to the seat, put it on the floor of the car.

Safety also means keeping the windows rolled up, which is such a bummer for dogs who love feeling the wind on their face while you drive.

Driving around with your dog can be safe and fun at the same time, if you're willing to take a few precautions ahead of time.
