The TikTok from @partywithpetey shared the Pit Bull's story as Petey belted out some tunes from the backseat of the car. Apparently, the fur baby was forbidden to make any noise while in the shelter and was too fearful to be vocal.

"A bark collar was used on Petey in the shelter before I adopted him, and he learned to stay quiet to stay safe," the caption explained, with the onscreen text adding, "His voice was punished, so he stopped using it."

That anxiety remained even after Petey was brought to his forever home, but soon he began to trust his mom. Now the precious pooch speaks up everywhere he goes, and it sounds magically melodious.

"For months after I adopted him, he was silent," the story continued. "But then, he started to feel safe, and now it all comes out — everything he used to hold inside, everything they made him keep in, everything he never got to say."

Petey Has a Fan Base

The canine crooner clearly loves his new life and showers his mom with affection to show his gratitude. Followers fell in love with Petey and want him to keep singing.

This entertaining cat breed is “incredibly intelligent and playful,” which is great for teaching them new tricks, Bonk notes. “Their energy and intelligence can get them in trouble if they aren’t given the proper outlet, however, as they will try to explore even the ‘off-limits’ parts of your home,” Bonk says. Still, these silly cats like to stick near their owners—even perching on people's shoulders at times.

That way, when you need to figure out how to help your dog relax, you'll know what you can say to support your dog’s emotional regulation and help regulate your dog’s stress response. However, because a dog's brain works different than a person's does and they communicate differently, just saying certain phrases and words won't work unless they are paired with associative learning. What does that mean? "This means that dogs will link specific words, tones and gestures to actions or objects," explains Shannon Kenny, CPDT-KA, a professional dog trainer at Woofz, a puppy and dog training app. "Dogs are extremely proficient in pattern recognition." Because of that, it's possible that some words can sooth your dog if your pet associates the term with a Zen vibe.

Try saying these words to instantly calm your dog down in soft, gentle tones, helping regulate your pet's nervous system. Use them consistently in calm situations first so your dog associates the words with safety and positive outcomes, then gradually apply them during mildly stressful moments to reinforce that response. Pairing the words with relaxed body language and slow movements can further enhance their effect, making it easier for your dog to settle and refocus.

1. Saying their name

Using your dog’s name can be an effective way to quickly regain their attention and help interrupt rising stress or overstimulation. Kenny says dogs usually know their name very well. That's why saying their name out loud can actually have a soothing effect on your pup.

"When consistently paired with positive consequences, it can be a great tool to get their attention," Kenny explains. "If you can quickly redirect your dog’s focus to you, it’s much more likely that you’ll be able to interrupt any escalating behavior and provide them with an easier or more calming activity." 

2. Saying the name of a place

Another dog training tip when it comes to helping your dog relax is to say the name of a place they can go. Kenny says this cue teaches dogs to go to their bed or mat, lie down and stay put. "This is an excellent behavior to help your dog calm down," Kenny says. "It can give your dog a clear job to do instead of choosing a behavior that you may not like."

Pro tip: Start teaching this and using this cue when the stakes are way lower than high-tailing it out the door. "If it’s practiced in calm situations first, it’s more likely to remind your dog that they can be calm in a 'real-life' situation, too," Kenny notes.

3. Mentioning "walk"

If you need an idea to help with dog anxiety relief that can encourage you dog to calm down, try saying "walk" as it can help shift their behavior. In fact, this calming word can act as a powerful reset cue for dogs, helping redirect their focus and support natural dog anxiety relief through movement and stimulation.

"The actual walk can be great physical and mental exercise," Kenny reports. "Moving, sniffing and exploring can be regulating for a dog, and it can provide an outlet for excess energy."

4. Telling them to "find it"

Learning how to calm a dog down can be confusing as a pet parent at times. Though sometimes simple games can be a great trick when your pup is over excited or feeling anxious or super excited about something.

"'Saying 'find it' is a simple cue to your dog that you’re going to toss food onto the ground," Kenny says. "It’s a type of pattern game, which has been shown to create predictability for dogs and lower their arousal level. It encourages sniffing and can help to interrupt and redirect stress or overexcitement."

5. Telling them to "sit"

Kenny states that saying "sit" is another word that helps dogs feel less anxious. "If it’s easy for your dog to do, it can be a great way to redirect their attention or pause their movement for a short period of time," she explains. "It also gives your dog a clear task to do that can earn a reward."

This type of cue is often used in positive reinforcement training, not necessarily to instantly relax a dog, but to interrupt escalating behavior and encourage focus.

Important caveat: A sitting dog isn't always a calm one. "Humans can do this as well," Kenny explains. "If you were extremely nervous about an important job interview and sitting on the bus to get there, would you look outwardly panicked? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t still feeling it. Watch your dog’s body language to make sure it actually helps them when you cue it."

6. Saying "crate"

You may be surprised to see "crate" listed as one of the words that will encourage your dog to calm down. But remember: Crates are most beneficial when they're not used for punishment but rather as a safe space. When used in this way, hearing the word "crate" is a cue to a pet that they have permission to take a break.

"If your dog likes their crate, it usually means that they view it as a 'safe zone' and a comfortable space to rest," Kenny explains. "It can be helpful to have a cue that asks your dog to go to their quiet space. They may be more likely to disengage from a situation and settle this way."

7. Saying "good boy/girl"

Calm verbal praise like “good boy” or “good girl” can be one of the simplest and most effective ways to help calm your dog down in stressful situations. "If it’s consistently said in a soft tone and paired with reinforcers like attention and touch, then it’s probably a great tool to help your dog relax," Kenny explains. "It can be helpful to give off the energy that you’re trying to see in your dog."

This simple dog training command is often used as part of positive reinforcement training to help with how to calm an anxious dog in stressful situations. "Most people will start petting their dog at a fast pace, shifting around to see if the vet is coming or talking to their dog quickly," Kenny points out. "All of these behaviors will only increase your dog’s stress! If you’re aware of what your body language is saying, you can be sure that your dog reads the right message."

Boon’s arrival marks a new addition to Zoo Atlanta’s animal lineup, and while she is still settling in behind the scenes, she is already generating plenty of interest from fans online following the news.

Meet Boon, Zoo Atlanta’s New Clouded Leopard View this post on Instagram

Boon, an 8-year-old female clouded leopard, made the transition to her new home in Atlanta on the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. As it turns out, Boon’s species has been classified as “vulnerable,” prompting conservation efforts across the globe.

While Boon’s name might suggest a larger big cat, clouded leopards aren’t actually true leopards. Instead, they’re best thought of as mid-sized wild cats that belong to their own genus, Neofelis. Fun fact: the clouded leopard has the longest tail in relation to body size of any wild cat and even has rotating ankle joints that allow them to descend trees headfirst. Cool, right?

"Boon requires a boop on the nose immediately,' one person wrote in a post about her arrival shared by @gafollowersnews. "Boon is so cute," a second added, while a third commented, "Those eyes though..."

Native to forests in Asia, including the Himalayan foothills, clouded leopards are most at risk from deforestation, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. These issues have damaged large areas of their habitat, making it harder for populations to thrive and reducing their range across parts of Southeast Asia.

"As an ambassador for a beautiful species with memorable adaptations, Boon will be a welcome and wonderful addition to the cat species found at Zoo Atlanta," said Gina Ferrie, PhD, Vice President of Collections and Conservation. "Her species also represents a conservation effort our members and guests are helping to support each time they visit."

The video starts with Charlie sitting in the bathtub, looking, quite frankly, very pleased with herself. People always talk about what it's like living with a Velcro dog, but rarely a clingy cat. They may be known for their defiant independence, but that's not always true. My Ragdoll cat, Milo, is basically a human toddler covered in fur (and he will get all up in your personal space as much as possible), so I can't imagine what he'd be like if he had kittens to show off.

To be fair, it's not Ellie's fault she's a Velcro baby because Scottish Folds are sort of known for it! It's all because these felines are sweet, affectionate, and loyal, following their parents from room to room for more attention. They just really like being with their people!

While they're not considered overly demanding in an aggravating way, these cats enjoy sharing the same space as those they love most, as opposed to cuddling up on a lap or being held. Ellie must really love and trust her mom to want to show off her babies so often.

It is always upsetting when our pet gets injured.

Helping Your Dog Adjust to a New Home

Beau seems to be in excellent spirits now that he's gotten a taste of his new digs, but a previous video shows him a little unnerved by the appearance of moving boxes. Moving is a lot for a dog—new smells, new layout, disrupted routine—so it’s completely normal if they feel a little off at first. The goal isn’t to rush the adjustment; it’s to make it feel as familiar and predictable as possible.

Start by giving them a gentle introduction. When you arrive, take them outside first so they can get their bearings (good job, Beau's family!), then walk them through the house on a leash. Keep things calm and supervised—this isn’t the moment to just let them roam and figure it out. 

Routine is your best friend here. Stick to the same feeding times, walks, and bedtime schedule they’re used to. Even if everything else has changed, that consistency helps them feel secure and understand that life is still “normal,” just in a new place.

Bring their stuff—and keep it recognizable. Their bed, toys, bowls, and even that slightly questionable favorite blanket. You might be tempted to get them new things for a new home, but familiar scents go a long way in making a new space feel like home faster.

Give them time to adjust on their terms. Some dogs will explore right away, others might hide under furniture or seem unsure. That’s okay. Let them move at their own pace instead of forcing interaction or exploration. When I moved, my doodle cowered all low to the ground, combat crawling around the new, empty house.

It also helps to limit overwhelm. Hold off on visitors, loud gatherings, or extra stressors until your dog settles in. And if possible, avoid introducing other changes (like grooming or new routines) at the same time.

And keep an eye on behavior. Temporary changes—like reduced appetite, mild anxiety, or clinginess—are common. But if things seem extreme or don’t improve, it’s worth checking in with a vet.

Both of my dogs are short-haired, yet they shed a lot. My senior Dachshund-Miniature Pinscher mix isn't too bad — I'll find her little tan-and-black hairs on the couch or on me after she's been sitting on my lap, but it's manageable. Her Puggie mix brother is another story. His golden fur is literally everywhere in my house and on every item of clothing. I truly believe his hair grows back the second I brush him. The Bichon Frise earned the top spot in Chewy's ranking of breeds that don't shed (a lot). These precious pooches sport curled double coats that are typically white, white and apricot, white and cream, or white and buff.

While there is no such thing as a completely non-shedding dog, these canine cuties come pretty close. Their coats should be brushed and combed daily to keep them healthy and untangled.

Bichon Frises are very playful, affectionate, and make wonderful pets for people of all ages. These small dogs typically weigh between 12 and 18 pounds at adulthood, and stand at 9.5 to 11.5 inches tall. Their life expectancy is between 14 and 15 years old.

More Low-Shedding Breeds

Several other breeds earned rankings on the list, ranging in size. Smaller breeds include the Poodle, Maltese, Dachshund (mine may be an outlying mid-shedder), Brussels Griffon, and Lhasa Apso. Cats might not actually be judgmental, but they often appear that way. We rescued him 6 months ago from someone who was fostering him. He has bad anxiety and is scared of men, so I knew when he ran off Friday night that it was going to be so hard to get him back. I finally got the call that he was in some lady’s backyard. So I did all I could, stayed calm, sat on the ground, had his toy, and let him come to me. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t panic when he grabbed that toy and then ran back to the corner of the yard, but I think after realizing there was a familiar scent, he came back to me and I lost it. We finally have our Hudson back!!!!”

As the dog emerges from the backyard, he doesn’t instantly run to his human as one might expect. The truth is, Hudson clearly went into what experts call “survival mode” while lost. Like humans in survival mode, when a dog gets lost, its instincts overpower its training as a means of survival. In this state, an otherwise friendly and affectionate dog may appear skittish and nervous, even around those that he loves. In times of high stress, like getting lost, a dog prioritizes the things needed to survive and may view every human as a threat.

While it may seem like Hudson isn’t happy to see his human, he just needs time to assess the situation and make sure he’s safe. Mom handles the situation perfectly by not forcing her dog into her arms and not rushing his transition. She waits patiently and wisely brings his stuffed toy—Golden Retrievers in particular find comfort in having things like soft toys in their mouths, a throwback to their breeding as retrieval dogs.

It may take a few minutes or more, but Hudson eventually realizes he’s safe to return home. That’s when he jumps into mom’s lap for a tearful reunion both won’t soon forget. Welcome home, Hudson. You were missed.

Rocco, a Jack Russell posted to Reddit's r/jackrussellterrier, has chased birds before, so seeing a bird on his pathway while out on a walk is nothing new.

What is new is what happened when a bird didn’t fly away from him.

In a viral video shared on Reddit, we see Rocco encounter a bird that lands on the ground and decides to stay put. Suddenly, the usual plan doesn’t seem so simple.

You can see it instantly. Rocco pauses, his head tilts, and he seems like he is quietly calculating in his head whether that is one animal he should chase or not.

In a video posted to Reddit's r/germanshepherds, you can see that the shepherd didn’t start barking. He didn't move forward. He just stared in disbelief.

You can almost see the moment his brain tries to process it. This isn’t a dog. It’s not a cat. It doesn’t move like anything he knows. And for a split second, the fearless protector looks unsure.

Then comes the bark. As his parent wrote in the Reddit post, “He was surprised and scared lol, what a naughty dog.”

Wolf Dogs, also known as Wolf hybrids, result as offspring of a Wolf and a domestic canine. Due to legal and ethical issues, some states place restrictions on having this type of crossbreed in a residential home, while others have a complete ban.

Two 4-month-old Wolf puppies were recently found in Prospect, Connecticut, where Wolf Dogs are illegal. The Prospect Police Department is now searching for the person or people responsible for abandoning these two pups in town.

The TikTok from @wtnh8 shared the story on the two Wolf Pups, who were named Spartacus and Barnaby.

"They're cute with big eyes and big ears and a beautiful coat of fur, but Prospect Police speculates that they were too aggressive for their owners," reporter Bob Wilson explained. "The town did genetics testing and found that their father was pure Wolf."

These two puppies were abandoned within the town limits of Prospect. The law in Connecticut clearly states it is illegal to raise or keep Wolf-bred puppies in your home, so police launched an investigation.

"They're trying to figure out exactly where they came from, how they got into Connecticut, and they say there's a good reason for that," Wilson continued. "They can get very aggressive and grow up quickly."

Where Are Spartacus and Barnaby Now?

Spartacus and Barnaby weren't released into the wild. Instead, they were taken to the New Jersey wildlife sanctuary, Howling Woods, where they are getting the proper care they need and have plenty of room to wander.

“They are going to need very different exercise requirements, very different engagement, than your average dog would,” Jenny Dixon from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division said. “They are going to need very specialized training.”

Wolf Dog hybrids have distinct features that set them apart from domestic dogs. Some attributes include longer snouts and larger size at a young age. Zilla Cannamela from Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates noted how their natural instincts give them a strong prey drive that needs to be in the wild.

“When you see one, you know,” Cannamela remarked. “They need space to run... It’s not a fair breed to the animal. It's not fair. These animals are brought up from states where it is legal to breed, like Texas... Combining the two, they’re living in separate worlds in one body."

Authorities actually confirmed that it was the first sighting of a litter with more than four bears to be seen in the state.

These cubs are just the sweetest! Look at how close they stay to their mama! Well, until a large rock attracts their attention. Good for them for getting a closer look at their world.

Now, for all that cuteness, there’s still a bit of anxiety that accompanies it because, let’s face it, those are bears!

In fact, mother bears can be highly aggressive. Their level of aggression, however, varies significantly between species. Mother Grizzly Bears, for example, are known for extreme, often "suicidal," protectiveness to defend their cubs. Mother Black Bears, on the other hand, rarely attack people and often rely on sending cubs up trees for safety.

After doing a bit of online research, I learned that the only bear species in Connecticut is the American Black Bear, with a population of roughly 1,000. They are generally shy and active from March through November. So, even though they’re usually timid and avoid human contact, we should all stay away from them! There’s a big difference between a real live bear and the stuffed teddy bears we all enjoyed as kids!

Where Are All the Bears?

To no one’s surprise, Alaska is the state with the most bears, with an estimated 100,000 Black Bears and 30,000 to 35,000 Grizzly/Brown Bears. It is the only state with all three North American species (Black, Brown/Grizzly, and Polar Bears) and contains over 98% of the U.S. Grizzly Bear population.

It’s fascinating to see wild animals pop up outside your window, even if they might weigh upwards of 300 pounds! In my neighborhood, we might see a deer or a fox every now and again, but a family of bears? That’s too much!
