1976 Hit Film, Written in 10 Days, Ranked Among Greatest Films of All Time
Some of the most influential movies in history take years to come together. Taxi Driver was not one of them.
The 1976 psychological drama, directed by Martin Scorsese, was famously written in just 10 days by screenwriter Paul Schrader, yet it went on to become one of the most acclaimed films ever made. Decades later, the movie was included in British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound roundup of The Greatest Films of All Time.
Starring Robert De Niro as lonely Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle, Taxi Driver follows a mentally unraveling cab driver drifting through the crime-filled streets of 1970s New York City. Alienated, angry and increasingly unstable, Travis becomes consumed by violence and his warped desire to "clean up" the city around him.
The film's dark atmosphere and psychological intensity immediately set it apart from other movies of the era. Scorsese captured a grimy, decaying version of New York that felt deeply authentic, while De Niro delivered one of the most iconic performances of his career.
The screenplay itself has become legendary in Hollywood history. Schrader reportedly wrote the script during a deeply difficult period in his life, channeling feelings of isolation and obsession into Travis Bickle's character.
"I do not believe that New York, the city, create[s] people such as the protagonist of the film or the center of the film," said Schrader in a 1976 interview. "I hesitate to call him a hero. He's a man of a disintegrating self-destructive personality and he is not created by the city."
Despite being completed in little more than a week, the script would eventually become one of the most studied screenplays in film history.
"I read it, and the character and the precision and power of the prose was like poetry," Scorsese said in a 2012 interview. "It was so strong, the dialogue, the scene descriptions, but ultimately it was truthful and honest and had many feelings that I certainly identified with later on."
The movie also introduced one of cinema's most famous lines, "You talkin' to me?" improvised by De Niro during the film's mirror scene. The line has since become one of the most quoted in film history.
Upon release, Taxi Driver sparked both critical acclaim and controversy due to its violence and unsettling themes. Still, it quickly established itself as a landmark of American cinema and earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Nearly 50 years later, the film's influence can still be seen across movies, television and pop culture.
Its inclusion among Sight and Sound's ranking confirms what generations of movie fans already knew: Taxi Driver wasn't just a hit film, it became a defining cinematic masterpiece.

1973 Soft Rock Classic, Released After Artist’s Death, Became a No. 1 Hit
In 1973, a tender soft rock ballad about time, love and mortality took on an even deeper meaning after the sudden death of the man who wrote it.
"Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after the singer's tragic death, transforming the song into one of the most emotional and enduring classics of the 1970s.
Croce originally wrote the song after learning that his wife, Ingrid, was pregnant with their son. The lyrics reflect a desire to slow down time and hold onto life's most meaningful moments, themes that would later resonate even more powerfully with listeners.
At first, "Time in a Bottle" was not intended to be a major single. But everything changed in September 1973 when Croce died in a plane crash at just 30 years old.
The singer had been traveling following a concert in Louisiana when the small charter plane carrying him and several others crashed shortly after takeoff. Croce, along with guitarist Maury Muehleisen and four others, was killed in the accident.
In the wake of his death, fans turned back to his music, particularly "Time in a Bottle," thee reflective lyrics of which suddenly felt hauntingly prophetic. Radio stations began playing the song heavily, and it soon climbed the charts, eventually reaching No. 1.
"When he found out we were gonna have a child, he realized he was gonna have to do something about it. He sat down that night and wrote 'Time In A Bottle.' I really believe it's more about the immortality of life," said Croce's widow, Ingrid, in an interview with Classic Bands. "When he wrote something it usually wasn't one circumstance that spurred it on. It was a lot of different people and a lot of different circumstances that brought that song together which is why I think his music is so universal."
The success cemented Croce's legacy as one of the era's defining singer-songwriters. Known for hits like "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)," Croce had a gift for combining vivid storytelling with emotional sincerity.
"This was a real person telling stories," said Croce's son, A.J. Croce, in 2024. "And I think that people are looking for real; they’re looking for music that isn't just manufactured to sell.”
More than 50 years later, "Time in a Bottle" remains one of the most beloved songs of the decade.
Its bittersweet beauty, and the tragedy surrounding its release, helped turn it into more than just a hit song. It became a lasting reminder of how fragile and precious time can be.
Billy Bob Thornton Reflects on His Mental Health Journey
Billy Bob Thornton is getting candid about his mental health. During an appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, the Landman star opened up on living with OCD and anxiety.
Thornton recalled to Mandel and Mandel's daughter, Jackelyn Shultz, a particularly vivid memory of how OCD first manifested for him during his childhood growing up with his late father.
He began, "It's well known that I have all these different things. I have a severe anxiety disorder as well as OCD, and I grew up dyslexic. When I was growing up, they didn't have programs, and it wasn't a thing, you know. They just thought you were an idiot at school. I grew up with it… my dad was not particularly nice to me. It was kind of tough around the house when I was a kid. He was in the service in the Korean War, and I think he had some problems."
"I had no idea what it was. I thought I invented it! I would do these things, and they say a lot of the time with OCD, it's someone who feels like their life is out of control, and it's a way that they can control something. I would do this thing. I knew what time he [Thornton's late father] got home from work. I would look at the clock...and when it would get, say, three minutes to four, when I would hear the car pull in the driveway around four o'clock usually, in my head I would say if I can count to a hundred five times before I hear the car come in the driveway, everything's gonna be okay," added Thornton.
The Boxmasters frontman also described an incredible moment shared with legendary singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. Zevon and Thornton once lived in the same West Hollywood apartment complex during the latter's early years as a young actor.
"This is in the late '80s, I guess," said Thornton. "I was standing at the mailbox to get my mail. Of course, in those days, I didn't get any mail. It's like a Ralph's flyer, or s—it like that. I opened the mailbox, [and] I pull[ed] out the Ralph's flyer. I put it back in, closed it, opened it again, [and] I pulled it out again. I did it three times. Well, Warren Zevon's standing next to me, and he's watching me. And he goes, 'You have it too, huh?'"
He added, "After that, Warren and I became friends, and we started discussing our OCD and our anxiety and all these different things. We used to compete with each other to see who had it worse."
Billy Bob Thornton has discussed his mental health diagnoses in previous interviews. In 2025, he told rock legend Ann Wilson of Heart on her After Dinner Thinks podcast about numerous conversations with one of his daughters regarding their shared mental health challenges.
"[We talk] about how these things are looked at by the public as detriments. But they're actually strengths, especially in the arts. If you check through history, you can't tell me Van Gogh and all those guys weren't on the spectrum," proclaimed the "Lost Highway" musician.
Nancy Guthrie: Sheriff Chris Nanos Shares Hopeful Update as Case Nears 100 Days
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's mom, Nancy Guthrie, 84, is still missing three months after her abduction in Tucson, Ariz.—and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos gave a hopeful update as the investigation neared 100 days.
On Friday, May 8, Fox News Digital asked Nanos about the case, which still has no named suspect after Nancy went missing on Feb. 1.
"It's 100 days now, almost, sir," a reporter behind the camera pointed out. "Are you guys any closer to solving?"
To that, Nanos replied, "We are." As he nodded, the sheriff added that things were going "really great."
However, Nanos did not answer when asked if he had a message for the Guthrie family for Mother's Day, which is Sunday, May 10.

Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on the evening of Jan. 31. Her family reported her missing the next day. Although the FBI released video clips and still images of a masked individual on Nancy's porch—not to mention that Savannah has offered a $1 million reward—no one has come forward with information leading to an arrest.
Recently, the FBI obtained DNA evidence, a hair sample, for processing. The PCSD County initially sent it to a private lab in Florida,but new technology could potentially crack the case. CeCe Moore, a genetic genealogist, told NewsNation’s Brian Entin that extraction of snip profiles from rootless hairs is now possible.
“Now we just have to hope that it is the person or persons—one of the persons—who kidnapped Nancy,” Moore said. “It’s again, kind of a Hail Mary. Everything is getting to that point, I feel, because so much time has gone by. But you just never know.”
Unfortunately, processing of the DNA evidence could still take months.
Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel and the PCSD have exchanged public blows about how well they have (or haven't) collaborated on Nancy's case.

'90s Rocker From Iconic Supergroup Ranked Among ‘Best Vocalists of All Time’
Chris Cornell, the legendary frontman of the supergroup Audioslave and grunge band Soundgarden, continues to be celebrated as one of the greatest vocalists in music history.
Despite his death in 2017, the singer and songwriter left a legacy that still resonates with generations of rock fans.
Through Audioslave and Soundgarden’s massive success in music, the ’90s rocker was widely recognized as one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
In a list shared by Consequence, the publication named the 100 greatest frontmen and singers in music history. Whether from rock, punk, hip-hop, R&B, famous artists or new performers, it is a celebration of the power of great vocalists.
The rankings are based on the survey of more than 50 musicians who were asked to name singers they believed deserved to be on the list.
As for Cornell, his “vibrato, swagger, rasp and high range” helped him secure the top 19 spot on the prestigious list.

In a 2008 interview with Juice magazine, Cornell spoke about his approach to vocal training and singing.
“I got a little bit of training here and there, and I’ve gone a long way with that,” he shared, adding, “In terms of vocal coaching over ten years, I’ve had six lessons. It’s helped at times. As a rock singer, you have to take what works for you. Most vocal training is based on opera singing. Rock is not opera, but applying some of those techniques has helped me a lot.“
The frontman also mentioned the impact of his rock star lifestyle on his singing voice that affected his performance.
“I was touring a lot and started having problems with my voice because I was smoking,” he told the outlet, adding, “I was overdoing it. I was singing songs that were really difficult to do and playing guitar at the same time. There are certain things you can learn to help you do that right.”
Unfortunately, in 2017, rock fans were stunned after news confirmed the passing of the 52-year-old singer due to suicide following his concert in Detroit.
Prior to this, he was open about battling severe depression, anxiety and addiction throughout his life.

1972 Classic Film With Rare Soundtrack Ranked Among Best Rock Movies of All Time
More than 50 years after its release, The Harder They Come is still being recognized as one of the most important music-driven films ever made.
The 1972 Jamaican crime drama was recently ranked by Ultimate Classic Rock among the best rock movies of all time.
Directed by Perry Henzell and starring reggae singer Jimmy Cliff, the movie became famous for introducing reggae music to many viewers outside Jamaica. The film’s soundtrack featured several now-classic songs, including “The Harder They Come,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Sitting in Limbo” and “Many Rivers to Cross.”
According to reports about the ranking, reggae music “had barely been known outside of Jamaica” before the film reached international audiences. Alongside Jimmy Cliff’s songs, the soundtrack also included music from The Maytals, including “Pressure Drop” and “Sweet and Dandy.”
The movie follows Ivanhoe “Ivan” Martin, played by Cliff, a poor young man who leaves rural Jamaica for Kingston, hoping to become a music star. Instead, he becomes trapped in poverty, corruption, crime and violence while trying to survive in the city.

The film was loosely based on a real Jamaican criminal from the 1940s known as Ivanhoe Martin, also called Rhyging. Before production, the project reportedly carried working titles including Rhygin and Hard Road to Travel before finally becoming The Harder They Come. The final title inspired Cliff to write the now-famous song of the same name.
The soundtrack became one of the film’s biggest achievements. Many critics and music historians have credited it with helping reggae music break into the United States and other international markets.
The soundtrack included songs from several Jamaican artists, including Desmond Dekker, The Melodians and the Slickers. Songs like “007 Shanty Town,” “Johnny Too Bad” and “Rivers of Babylon” helped introduce global audiences to Jamaican music styles during the early 1970s.
The film itself also became a major cultural moment in Jamaica. It showed black Jamaicans speaking Jamaican Patois and living everyday lives on screen in real locations across Kingston. Reports about the movie’s release said audiences reacted strongly because many viewers were seeing themselves represented in film for the first time.
When the movie reached the United States, subtitles were reportedly needed because of the thick local patois spoken by the characters. Despite that challenge, the film slowly built a following after midnight screenings in American theaters.
Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the movie with a 91% critic score. The site’s consensus reads: “The Harder They Come boasts hard-hitting drama and insightful social commentary, all matched beat for beat by a flawless soundtrack.”
Film critic Roger Ebert also highlighted the movie’s musical importance in his review. He wrote that the film became “the first extensive American movie exposure for reggae.”
Over time, The Harder They Come grew into one of the most influential Caribbean films ever released. Critics have often compared parts of the movie to classic crime films and spaghetti westerns because of its outlaw story and antihero lead character.
A review from The Guardian described the movie as existing “between the two moods of its two most famous tracks,” pointing to the hopeful message of “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and the darker warning inside the title song.
The movie’s influence continued long after its original release. In 1980, author Michael Thelwell published a novel based on the film. A stage musical adaptation later opened in the United Kingdom in 2006 before new productions followed in later years, including a 2023 adaptation in New York.
The soundtrack also left its mark on other musicians. English punk band The Clash referenced Ivan in “The Guns of Brixton,” while Big Audio Dynamite sampled dialogue from the film in their music. More than five decades after it first premiered in Jamaica in 1972, The Harder They Come remains a landmark film for reggae music, Caribbean cinema and music-driven storytelling.

The most beloved song from The Wizard of Oz might go to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, but there are plenty of other hits from the 1939 classic.
One singalong that never fails to get stuck in fans' heads is "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead," which is often called the centerpiece of multiple songs in a sequence featuring the Munchkins, Glinda (Billie Burke) and Dorothy (Judy Garland).

The renowned musical — whose No. 1 fan might have been the late, great filmmaker David Lynch, but that's for another day — regained popularity amid the releases of the recent Wickedmovies.
And 13 years ago, the "Ding-Dong" song in particular resurfaced on music charts for an unexpected reason. When Margaret Thatcher died in 2013, a campaign launched by opponents of hers on Facebook titled "Make Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead number one the week Thatcher dies," The Guardian reports. The 1939 track, credited to Garland, quickly became a top-10 success on midweek charts — and Ella Fitzgerald's 1961 cover version even saw increased sales.
Then came the radio bans. The song ultimately reached No. 2 in 2013, but the BBC decided not to play it in full on the Radio One chart show, per The Independent. A listener then complained saying that the move was "a breach of the requirement for impartiality" and had "compromised" the "integrity" of the chart.
In response to the complaint, the BBC Trust's Editorial Standards Committee said "the song had become linked with a campaign in the wake of Lady Thatcher's death to display opposition to her premiership and that it did have the capacity to cause offence because it had been widely publicised as being a way of giving voice to anti-Thatcher feelings."
1975 Hit Became the Most Controversial Song of Country Icon's Career
In 1975, Loretta Lynn released her most controversial song 15 years after the birth control pill was introduced on May 9, 1960—and it remains one of the most enduring songs on the subject 66 years later.
The song, titled "The Pill," follows a woman who is frustrated and angry that her husband gets her pregnant every year before ultimately finding freedom through birth control pills.
Recorded in 1972 and held back by Lynn's label, the song was finally released in 1975 on her album Back to Country and was the only single released from that record.
Like many of Lynn's previous songs, "The Pill" weaves in elements from her personal life. Lynn married her husband, Oliver Lynn, at the age of 15 and the pair shared six children, four of whom were born while she was only a teenager.
“I had four kids before I was 18,” Lynn old TIME magazine in 1975. “If I had had the pill, I would’ve been popping it like popcorn.”
"The Pill," unsurprisingly, was very controversial when it was first released, with many country radio stations refusing to play it. At one point, Lynn was nearly banned from the Grand Ole Opry.
“You know I sung it three times at the Grand Ole Opry one night, and I found out a week later that the Grand Ole Opry had a three-hour meeting, and they weren’t going to let me [sing it]…” she told Playgirl Magazine. “If they hadn’t let me sing the song, I’d have told them to shove the Grand Ole Opry!”
However, not all of the reception was negative. In her interview with Playgirl, Lynn recalled how a number of rural doctors had told her that "The Pill" had done more to highlight the availability of birth control in isolated, rural areas than all of the pamphlets they had released.
Though it was shunned by country radio, "The Pill" went on to become Lynn’s biggest crossover hit, peaking at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming her highest-charting song on the pop chart.

Everything is all right, all right, all right when it comes to Matthew McConaughey and his relationship with his mom, Kay McConaughey.
