Best-Selling 2022 Psychological Thriller Hit is Still the ‘Most Read Book of the Year’ on Goodreads

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:45am

In 2019, author Freida McFadden was working on a novel that would eventually become The Housemaid. However, at the time McFadden felt the themes of the novel were to heavy and dark compared to her previously books and ended up scrapping the project. Then in 2022, the British digital publishing company Bookoture offered to publish one of McFadden's manuscript and promote it to their mailing list. The book she ended up giving them was The Housemaid.

The Housemaid was almost instantaneously successful. The immediate reaction to the novel is what led McFadden to pursue signing with an agent and getting publishing and wide distribution for her work.

The Housemaid is considered to be a "monster hit" having spent 141 weeks on The New York Times trade paperback best-seller list, as well as 112 weeks on its Combined Print and E-Book Fiction list as of 2026. Additionally, The Housemaid has the top spot on the Most Read Books of 2026 according to Goodreads having been "shelved" over a million times this year.

View this post on Instagram

Part of the widespread success of The Housemaid is attributed to its virality on BookTok, the colloquial term for the digital reader community on TikTok. Social media "word of mouth" is a huge part of its massive appeal.

The Housemaidfollows protagonist Millie, an ex-felon who desperately needs housing and work following her release from prison. Millie ends up landing a live-in housemaid position for the wealthy couple Andrew and Nina Winchester. In the beginning, Nina seems to be kind and sympathetic to Millie. But over time she begins to unravel before Millie's eyes seeming completely unstable. While growing closer to the family and living under the roof, Millie gets more than she bargained for as she continues to uncover their web of dark, deep secrets.

McFadden ended up making the book into part of a trilogy, releasing two sequels to her smash hit. The Housemaid's Secret was published in 2023, and was followed by the The Housemaid is Watching in 2024.

The Housemaid and its respective sequels are available wherever books are sold.

1979 Classic, Written in 20 Minutes and Covered Years Later, Became a Hit for Two Country Icons

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:41am

You never know when inspiration will strike. A quick burst of creativity during a lunch break gave birth to this 1979 classic, which went on to become a hit a second time, almost thirty years later.

Eddie Rabbitt scored a country crossover hit with the tune "Suspicions." In a July 1985 interview for the Star News, he admitted that the song came to him quickly, stating, "Sometimes the lyrics just fall out of my mouth."

Rabbitt co-wrote the song with Even Stevens. The songwriter told The Tennessean he and Rabbitt were at Wally Heider’s Los Angeles studio when the magic moment occurred.

"We had flown out the Swampers, the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, to do an album (for) Eddie out there. It was the last day, and we were on break for lunch," he began.

"We’d already cut the whole album pretty much. David (Malloy), Eddie and I stayed back and didn’t go (to lunch), and Randy McCormick, the great piano player from Muscle Shoals and Nashville. There was a Rhodes (piano) out in the middle of the studio."

Stevens concluded, "[Eddie] started doodling on this thing, and we started writing this song. In about 20 minutes, I’d say, we had 'Suspicions' written.

The country song soon became a crossover hit. The tune would land at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Country Charts in August 1979 and peak at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September.

"Suspicions" ranked at No. 39 of the Top 50 Yacht Rock Songs in a list compiled by Ultimate Classic Rock. The song landed between Poco's "Crazy Love" and "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck.

In 2007, country superstar Tim McGraw put his own spin on "Suspicions," nearly three decades after the song first became a hit. His version climbed to No. 12 on the country charts, narrowly missing the Top 10.

Stevens explained, "For years, musicians would come up to me and say, 'You know, I was doing a Tim McGraw record the other day, and before we started, he was sitting around playing ‘Suspicions’ and said 'Someday I’m going to record this song.’”

"That went on for three or four years. And people would say that he would play it for them backstage. I kept going, 'Well, tell him to (record) it!'”

Not bad for a song that took just five minutes to write. "Suspicions" has enjoyed a lasting legacy, becoming a hit in two genres across two generations, and remaining a fan favorite today.

The Banned Book That Perfectly Matches You, Based on Your Birth Month

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:33am

Throughout history, authors have explored themes in their writing that have set off alarm bells with lawmakers and others in power who are intent on silencing and repressing art that truthfully comments on or reflects the full human experience. Books that shed light on topics like racism, misogyny, sexuality, and even adolescence have been banned by governments and other formal organizations based on narrow political, legal, religious, and moral views. As chilling as this might be, banning can also give certain titles a new life. Attempts at censorship might remind us just how much of a treasure and a classic a book truly is. Among these many banned book titles, there’s one that best reflects your spirit, based on your birth month.

Which Banned Book Matches Your Birth Month?

Read on to learn which banned book connects to your point of view and spirit, based on the month you were born.

January: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Born as a new year was just beginning, you were born while the sun was moving through either hardworking, serious Capricorn or progressive, innovative Aquarius. Both signs are ruled by Saturn, the planet of boundaries, restrictions, and commitment, and the restriction of books themselves is at the very core of Bradbury’s 1953 dystopian novel. Banned for how it portrays censorship, language, and themes of rebellion, the sci-fi, revolutionary story reflects your point of view as someone potentially influenced by Aquarius, which is also ruled by Uranus, the planet of rebellion. But if you’re more of an ambitious Capricorn, you can also appreciate how Bradbury explores institutionalized authority and literacy as a form of power.

February: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Born when the sun was moving through either innovative, science-minded air sign Aquarius or escapist, artistic water sign Pisces, you’re easily swept up by your intuition as well as futuristic daydreams. You’re a dreamer, a creative, and an innovator, as well as someone who cares deeply for community and values individuality, which is why Huxley’s 1932 dystopian novel, banned for exploring sex, drugs, and the state’s control of its citizens, will fire you up.

COSMIC: These 4 Zodiac Signs Are Set to Thrive During Jupiter’s Transit Through Leo

March: A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

You were born when the sun was traveling through either dreamy, mystical water sign Pisces or assertive, dynamic, go-getter fire sign Aries. Banned multiple times—in Boston, Ireland, Hitler’s Germany, and Mussolini’s Italy—since it was published in 1929, due to its sexual content and realistic depiction of war, Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms appeals to your sense of romance as it explores the affair between an American expatriate and an English nurse, as well as your innate understanding of a love worth fighting for.

April: Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence

Born when the sun was moving through either pioneering, action-oriented fire sign Aries or Taurus, the grounded, practical earth sign, you’re passionate, sensual, and generally someone who moves through life with a great deal of conviction. Lawrence’s 1928 novel was published privately but banned in the U.S. and U.K. for its explicit sexual content before being republished in 1960 and selling millions of copies. In exploring eroticism as a path to feeling more alive and resisting class hierarchy and repressive industrialization appeals to your sense of wanting to embrace and embody every moment life has to offer.

May: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

Whether you were born when the sun was moving through beauty-loving, relationship-building earth sign Taurus or social butterfly, information-gathering air sign Gemini, you’re genuinely curious and eager to learn and explore. That’s the underpinning of the 1962 novel by L’Engle which revolves around the Murray family who has to travel through time to save the universe. Banned for its blend of science, religion, and fantasy, you’ll appreciate the Newbery winner’s heart, wonder, and earnestness.

RELATE?: The 4 Most Self-Sufficient Birth Months, Per Experts

June: The Family Book by Todd Parr

As a person who came into the world when the sun was in either social, curious, bubbly air sign Gemini or sentimental, family-oriented water sign Cancer, you care deeply about your nearest and dearest and possess a big, loving, compassionate heart. This children’s book, written by New York Times bestselling author Todd Parr in 2003, won an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award and teaches kids about the diversity of families, pointing out that all families are special, whether they’re composed of two moms, two dads, are adoptive, big, or small through bold, bright hues and playful illustrations. Its joyfulness and inclusivity appeal to your own sensitive, compassionate soul.

July: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Born when the sun was in either nurturing, sentimental water sign Cancer or dramatic, dynamic, go-getter fire sign Leo, you are no stranger to wearing rose-colored glasses like Jay Gatsby when it came to the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan. Like the famous protagonist, you might idealize moments from the past or romanticize the present. The summery, effervescent, glitzy,  glamorous scenes also appeal to your sense of enchantment. Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic, which was published in 1925, has long been a staple on high school reading lists, but it has also been challenged for certain language, violence, and sexual references.

August: Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

Whether you were born under sunny, self-assured fire sign Leo or communicative, health-conscious Virgo, you care deeply about bolstering self-awareness, growing and evolving as a person, and feeling seen. These are all themes that are woven throughout Blume’s iconic 1970 young adult novel about sixth-grader Margaret who’s grappling with menstruation, puberty, boys, bras, and a variety of other challenges of early adolescence. The novel has been banned time and again due to Blume’s realistic discussion of sex and religion, but its timeless wisdom stemming from Margaret’s conversations with God, feminist exploration of bodily autonomy, and self-consciousness reflects your mind and heart.

EXPLORE: This Disney Movie Matches Your Personality, Based on Your Birth Date

September: The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

You were born under either cerebral, service-oriented earth sign Virgo or partnership-loving, elegant air sign Libra, which means you’re a complete romantic and any kind of fairy tale is right up your alley. Enter Wang’s popular—and also, frequently banned—graphic novel that was published in 2018 and tells the story of Prince Sebastian who lives a double life as a fashion icon named Lady Crystallia, and his dressmaker, Frances. Set in Paris, the modern love story’s positive representation of gender identity and exploration of self-acceptance will resonate with your beauty-loving, heartfelt point of view.

October: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

The sun moved through diplomatic air sign Libra and fearless water sign Scorpio during the month you came into the world, which means you’re dynamic, artistic, and eager to bring more balance, intimacy, and beauty into the world. Angelou’s 1969 autobiography reflects on growing up in the 1930s South and has been challenged for its sexually explicit scenes, language, LGBTQIA+ content, and more. Because you tend to move through the world with a go-getter, powerful point of view, while also acknowledging the more complex, emotionally distressing aspects of life, the classic’s themes of resilience, community, literature, love, and self-discovery will touch your heart.

November: Delta of Venus by Anais Nin

Whether you were born under the magnetic, sexy water sign Scorpio or adventurous, wanderlust-fueled fire sign Sagittarius, you can appreciate Nin’s commitment to penning graphic erotica. Delta of Venus, a collection of 15 short stories that were originally written in the 1940s for a private collector, was published posthumously in 1977. Banned all over, including on Amazon, Venus “shows the beginning efforts of a woman in a world that had been the domain of men,” according to Nin. Given your penchant for spotlighting the truth and shattering taboos, you’ll connect with its honesty and progressive, feminist lens.

READ: Readers Loved This Best-Selling Novel—Now It’s Among 2025’s Most Banned Books

December: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Born with your sun in either truth- and spiritual growth-seeking fire sign Sagittarius or pragmatic earth sign Capricorn, you’ll click with Salinger’s classic 1951 coming-of-age novel as it appeals to your abhorrence of phoniness and false pretenses while highlighting society’s hypocrisies and superficiality. Banned for language and references to substance abuse and sex, the novel’s themes of angst, alienation, identity, belonging, loss, depression, and sex weave a complex web that genuinely reflects life and holds up even decades on. As someone who is generally eager to share their perspective and philosophies, you can appreciate main character Holden Caulfield’s opinionated, observant voice.

Right now, Walmart has a shopper-loved option for 50% off.

The Costway 7.2-Foot Portable Beach Umbrella is on sale for just $35, down from $70. It has UPF 50+ sun protection and comes in four cheerful colors: blue, green, navy blue, and a rainbow stripe. The 7.2-foot canopy is made from thick polyester with a UV-protective coating, so you get UPF 50+ coverage to block the harshest rays. A push-button tilt lets you adjust the canopy as the day goes on, so you stay in the shade as the sun shifts. Up top, an air vent helps hot air escape and lets wind pass through, which improves airflow underneath and keeps the umbrella steadier in a breeze.

For stability, it has a built-in sand anchor that screws securely into the ground, with flip-down handles that make it easy to twist it into the sand. Eight sturdy steel ribs and a steel pole add durability, so it holds up to regular use. There's also a detachable cup holder that can hold drinks, snacks, sunscreen, or your phone while you relax.

Walmart reviewers said it's “sturdy” and well made. One called it a "good quality umbrella," while another wrote that they "can't wait to try it out at the beach." A third added, "We used this on a mildly windy day at the beach and it worked perfectly!"

7 Creams With Hyaluronic Acid That Are Perfect for Dry Skin Over 50

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:25am

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Growing up, my mom had the kind of dry skin that defeated every product she tried. I watched her work through the drugstore moisturizer section systematically, like a scientist running trials, buying one thing, using it for two weeks, declaring it "completely useless," and she onto the next! Nothing worked the way the packaging promised and my mom, my forever queen, was defeated! Well, I didn’t understand it then—how demoralizing and defeating it is to be a woman with more mature skin that just won't hydrate!—but I do now.

After 50, the skin undergoes a series of biological changes that make moisturizing genuinely harder than it used to be. Estrogen levels decline, which cuts the skin's natural production of hyaluronic acid, ceramides and natural oils all at once. The skin barrier becomes less efficient at holding onto moisture. Cell turnover slows from around 28 days to 50 or more. Dr. Daniel Gould, board-certified plastic surgeon, describes it to Parade as "a barrier that loses water faster than it can hold onto it"—which dermatologists call transepidermal water loss, and which my mom called Tuesday (and every other day!).

Hyaluronic acid has become the ingredient most closely associated with solving this problem, and for good reason. It's a naturally occurring molecule in the body capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water, and after 50, your skin's own production of it has dropped to roughly half of what it was in your twenties. The right topical formula can close that gap. But not all hyaluronic acid products are built the same, and using one incorrectly—applying it to dry skin, skipping the moisturizer on top, choosing a formula too lightweight for parched mature skin—is probably what my mom kept running into.

To find the best face creams with hyaluronic acid that actually work for dry skin over 50, we talked to eight dermatologists, plastic surgeons and skincare experts. Their answers clarified a lot, starting with the fact that my mom wasn't doing anything wrong. She just needed better products and better information—both of which are now, finally, thankfully, much easier to find. (And since I inherited many things from my mom, including her Saharan-like skin, this information is relevant to me, too!)

Top Face Creams With Hyaluronic Acid What Is Hyaluronic Acid and How Does It Help Mature Skin?

Think of hyaluronic acid as a moisture reservoir. It's a humectant, meaning it attracts water and holds it in the skin rather than simply coating the surface. Dr. Kseniya Kobets, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care, explains that as we age, the skin naturally becomes drier, thinner and less efficient at retaining moisture, which is exactly where topical HA steps in.

The important thing to understand, as Dr. Nicole Lee of Epoch Dermatology, points out, is that hyaluronic acid is hydration support rather than a structural anti-aging ingredient. "I think of it as improving the environment of the skin rather than replacing true structural support," she says.

It makes skin look healthier, more supple and more luminous. It softens the appearance of fine lines. It doesn't rebuild collagen. Setting that expectation correctly is the difference between being delighted by the results and feeling, well, disappointed.

How Does Hyaluronic Acid Help Plump Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

Exoceuticals’ partner Dr. Robin Smith offers the most memorable explanation here. "Think of a grape versus a raisin," he says. "The structure is still there, but hydration dramatically affects how smooth and plump the surface appears." Hyaluronic acid draws water into the outer layers of skin, temporarily filling out the appearance of fine dehydration lines and creating a smoother surface.

Gould adds that results from topical HA can sometimes appear within 15 to 30 minutes by binding water in the epidermis. The deeper structural wrinkles, those driven by collagen loss rather than dehydration, require different tools. But for the surface-level texture and fine lines that dry mature skin accumulates over time, consistent HA use makes a visible and meaningful difference.

Ingredients Dermatologists Recommend Alongside Hyaluronic Acid

Nobody recommends hyaluronic acid alone. The consistent message across every expert is that HA hydrates but doesn't retain—you need other ingredients to seal that hydration in and keep it there.

Ceramides come up most frequently. They rebuild the lipid barrier so the water HA attracts actually stays in the skin. Kobets explains that mature skin especially benefits from combining hydration with barrier repair, adding peptides for collagen support, niacinamide for tone and barrier strengthening and antioxidants for environmental defense.

Lee's approach is similar. "Healthy aging in skin is rarely about one hero ingredient," she says. "It is usually about creating the right environment for skin to function optimally."

One practical note from Dr. Nazanin Saedi worth saving: Hyaluronic acid works best applied to damp skin, followed immediately by a moisturizer to seal everything in. On dry skin, particularly in dry climates, HA can actually pull water from the deeper layers of the skin rather than from the air, which makes dryness worse.

Gould confirms this is the number one reason people say HA didn't work for them.

7 Best Hyaluronic Acid Creams for Dry Skin Over 50

These are the best face creams with hyaluronic acid that dermatologists recommend.

1. Best for Mature Skin: Alastin HA Immerse Serum, $134

Amazon

Technically a moisturizing serum, Saedi's top pick for mature skin types goes beyond basic hydration in a way that makes it genuinely different from most HA products. Not only does it immediately pull moisture into the skin, it's formulated to help stimulate the skin's own natural production of hyaluronic acid over time.

"Those with mature, dry, dull, thirsty skin should try this," she tells Parade, adding that "when used regularly, it adds not just a temporary plump to the skin, but it will also improve the skin's overall hydration over time."

Apply to damp skin for maximum effect.

2. Best Drugstore: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Cream Fragrance-Free, $25

CVS

Multiple experts point to this product for the best budget-friendly option. It's oil-free, non-comedogenic and absorbs quickly without the heavy texture that drier mature skin sometimes needs to graduate away from.

Dr. Timothy Tran of Westlake Dermatology Houston calls it "a great lightweight and drugstore HA serum" that "helps give the skin a fresh, hydrated, dewy look without feeling heavy." For a starting point that's widely accessible and consistently delivers, this is the answer.

3. Best Night Cream: Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream, $74

Amazon

Hajrie Sulejmani, board-certified aesthetic injector and founder of The Aesthetics Loft, shares that this one as the overnight pick for dry skin. The rich, deeply moisturizing formula leaves skin looking noticeably softer, smoother and more luminous by morning—which is exactly the kind of overnight transformation that makes getting into a consistent routine feel worth it.

She calls this "a rich overnight moisturizer that leaves dry skin looking softer, smoother, and more luminous by morning." Mature skin repairs itself while you sleep, and a formula this nourishing gives it real material to work with.

4. Best Lightweight: Vichy Mineral 89, $32

Ulta

Gould's lightweight recommendation absorbs fast and layers easily under SPF, making it a natural fit for the morning routine. He specifically recommends it for its ability to work "great under SPF" while absorbing quickly—which for people who found heavier creams suffocating going into the day is exactly the point. For skin over 50 that still wants real hydration without any heaviness, this threads the needle.

5. Best for Sensitive Skin: Avène Hydrance Aqua-Gel, $42

Avène

For skin over 50 that has also become more reactive—common as the barrier weakens with age—a formula that doesn't push back is genuinely valuable. Sulejmani describes it as "a calming, minimalist hydrator that delivers moisture without feeling heavy or irritating," making it one of the few options in this category that handles both dryness and sensitivity without compromising on either.

6. Best Fragrance-Free: Vanicream Daily Moisturizer Cream, $14

Amazon

Gould's fragrance-free pick is free of all top allergens, which makes it particularly solid for rosacea or eczema-prone skin over 50. He specifically calls it out as "really solid for rosacea or eczema prone skin over 50," and notes that as the barrier weakens with age, fragrance sensitivity often increases alongside it.

7. Best for Crepey Skin: RETINOL CORREXION Line Smoothing Max Hydration Cream, $38

Ulta

Rachel Lee Lozina, celebrity esthetician and founder of Blue Water Spa, singles this one out specifically for a night cream, and the accessible price point makes it easy to use generously on the neck, décolleté and anywhere else texture has shifted.

FAQs

Why Does Skin Get Drier After 50?

Several things happen at once, and the cumulative effect is significant. Gould breaks it down practically. Estrogen decline cuts oil and natural hyaluronic acid production. Ceramide levels in the barrier drop about 40% by age 60. Cell turnover slows dramatically. The result is skin that loses water faster than it can replace it.

Lee says that patients often tell her their skin suddenly feels thinner, drier or more fragile, and emphasizes that they are not imagining it. "The skin is changing," she explains, "which means skincare often needs to evolve too."

For many women, this shows up most noticeably around and after menopause, when the hormonal shift accelerates changes that had been building gradually for years.

Can Hyaluronic Acid Help Crepey or Thinning Skin?

Yes and no, and the experts are consistent about where the line falls. Hyaluronic acid improves the appearance of crepey skin by increasing surface hydration and smoothing texture—which is for sure noticeable. What it cannot do is rebuild the collagen and elastin scaffolding underneath, which is what causes crepiness structurally.

Kobets recommends pairing HA with retinoids, sunscreen and antioxidants for more improvement, and notes that in-office collagen-stimulating procedures are sometimes the more effective route for significant laxity. Smith adds that regenerative technologies like topical exosomes can support the skin's natural repair processes in ways that hydration alone can't replicate. The summary is that HA is one useful piece of a larger picture for crepey skin, not the whole solution.

Can You Use Hyaluronic Acid Every Day?

Yes, without question. Every expert on this list says the same thing. Hyaluronic acid is one of the gentlest, best-tolerated skincare ingredients available, and consistent daily use is actually the key to maintaining the hydration benefits. Twice daily is ideal for dry skin over 50.

The one caveat Kobets raises is worth noting: Some hyaluronic acid products contain fragrance, essential oils or active ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. Read the full ingredient list, not just the headline ingredient, to make sure the formula is actually right for your skin type.

Best-Selling Author's Novel Quietly Became One of Goodreads' 'Most Read Books'

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:21am

More than 650,000 Goodreads members in the U.S. have marked Alison Espach's "The Wedding People" as finished this year, making the bestselling novel the No. 4 title on Goodreads' latest "Most Read Books This Year" list. The ranking places it ahead of blockbuster favorites like "Fourth Wing," "Sunrise on the Reaping," "Broken Country" and "The Women," underscoring the remarkable staying power of a novel that has continued finding new readers nearly two years after its release.

Originally published in July 2024, "The Wedding People" quickly became a New York Times bestseller and has since sold more than 1.5 million copies. Along the way, it was selected as a Read With Jenna book club pick, won the 2024 Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction and was named one of the year's best books by publications including Time, The Guardian, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Real Simple and Glamour. A film adaptation was also set in motion before the novel even reached bookstores.

Despite its breezy title, "The Wedding People" begins in unexpectedly dark territory. Phoebe Stone arrives alone at a luxury hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, planning to spend one final night indulging herself before ending her life. Instead, she finds herself surrounded by guests attending an elaborate wedding weekend. After striking up an unlikely friendship with the bride, Phoebe begins to reconsider both her plans and the future she thought she had lost.

View this post on Instagram

Barnes & Noble describes the novel as "a propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew," praising Espach for balancing humor and heartbreak with warmth and insight. The bookseller also notes that the story explores "the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us."

Critics embraced the novel for that emotional balance. The Washington Post praised Espach's "wit and warmth," while the Chicago Tribune called the novel "deeply satisfying." People described it as "a feel-good testament to the life-altering magic of chance meetings," and Time hailed it as "deceptively complex," highlighting its rewarding story of unexpected connection.

Readers have been just as enthusiastic. One Goodreads reviewer with more than 60,000 followers called the novel "one of the top ten books of the year you shouldn't miss," praising its blend of humor, emotional depth and memorable characters. Another popular reviewer wrote that while the novel wasn't a perfect read, it was "certainly…a darn special one," saying Phoebe's journey "brings a lump to my throat and a flutter to my heart" as she gradually discovers hope through unexpected friendships.

Espach, who teaches English at Providence College in Rhode Island, published her debut novel "The Adults" in 2011 before following it with "Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance" in 2022. But it was "The Wedding People" that became her breakout success, transforming the author into a bestseller while continuing to attract hundreds of thousands of new readers long after its initial release. With more than 650,000 Goodreads users in the United States alone having already finished the novel this year, its word-of-mouth momentum shows no sign of slowing.

Best-Selling Author’s Debut Novel Ranked Among ‘Favorite Summer’ Books on Goodreads

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 5:03am

There’s something uniquely special about the friends you make as a teenager: you’re finally figuring out who you are as a person, and for the first time in your life, you have the autonomy and self-awareness to be able to truly express that to others. Sure, there are plenty of growing pains in the process, but the feeling of being truly loved and seen by a group of your peers is breathtaking if you experience it.

But what happens when that group’s world is suddenly shattered through a tragic incident? That’s what author John Green set out to talk about in his stunning debut novel, Looking for Alaska, which tells the story of a group of friends, told through the eyes of protagonist Miles “Pudge” Halter, who have to process the death of their friend and classmate, Alaska Young.

The novel explores themes of grief and longing, but more than anything, it’s about the resilience of its characters and how, in embracing their deceased friend’s joie de vivre, they can let go of the pain of her loss while still holding onto the love they felt for her.

The Name of the Wind author Patrick Rothfuss gave it a perfect five-star rating, writing that it left him “feeling like I've had a hole kicked straight through my guts.” But not all reviews felt so strongly about the book, at least not in a positive way, with some saying that they didn’t connect with the book’s characters, and others saying that it fell short of expectations.

1992 Power Ballad That Became Billboard’s Song of the Year Turns 34 Today

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:55am

Some songs become more than just hits—they become part of a generation’s soundtrack.

Thirty-four years ago today, one powerful ballad was released and would go on to become one of the biggest songs of its era. The emotional track topped the charts, earned major recognition, and remains a favorite among music fans decades later.

The song was "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men. Released on June 30, 1992, the R&B track was part of the Boomerang soundtrack. The song was a massive success for the group, and was named Billboard's Song of the Year. "End of the Road" broke Elvis Presley's 36-year-old record by spending 13 consecutive weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 1993, Boyz II Men won two Grammy awards for the song; one for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best R&B Song.

The song, produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface and co-written Reid, Babyface, and Daryl Simmons, is still considered one of the best R&B ballads of all time.

The music video for the track has been viewed more than 384 million times on YouTube since it was first uploaded 16 years ago.

"'End Of The Road' is one of the songs that really catapulted our career and continues to make an impact globally," read the caption of an Instagram Reel posted by the group in 2022. "Happy 30th Anniversary to our iconic song!"

Fans quickly filled the comments section of the post with supportive messages, many saying just how much they love the song.

"I love this song, congratulations for all this wonderful work," one person wrote.

"Still one of my fave tunes of all time!!" someone else added.

Boyz II Men still performs a variety of shows each year—and, unsurprisingly, "End of the Road" is usually on their set list.

Millie Bobby Brown Reveals the Reality of Growing up Around ‘Men Over 40’

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:30am

Millie Bobby Brown finds it difficult to connect with other young adults because of her experience as a child actor. She felt she missed out on “socialization” because she wasn’t able to have a traditional school experience.

The 22-year-old spoke about her upbringing in the public eye in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

"Sometimes when fans come up to me, they'll be like 'Millie!' and I'll be like 'Aah!'" she said.

"I just don't know how to react sometimes to people my own age," Brown continued. "I have a harder time. Because I grew up with primarily men on crews, let's change that."

The actress made her debut in the 2013 drama Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, but became a household name after being cast as Jane "Eleven" Hopper in Netflix's hit series Stranger Things.

Brown explained that as a child actor, she worked with crew members that were mostly "men over 40 years old."

"And so I heard a lot of adult talk growing up, I didn't really talk about the things you're meant to talk about as a kid," she shared. "Because you hear 'Where's the grip? Let's grab a ladder,' you know? And so that's your whole conversation."

Brown’s social life changed drastically when she met her now-husband, JakeBongiovi, who is Jon Bon Jovi’s son.

"The complete opposite [side] of me," the actress said of her husband. "You know, he went to boarding school and college, so he is like a social butterfly. When I met him, I really tried to lean more into that. So, I'm in my social era."

The couple wed in May 2024 and about a year later are adding a new member to their family. Brown and Bongiovi adopted a "sweet baby girl,” in August 2025. They wrote on instagram, “We are beyond excited to embark on this beautiful next chapter of parenthood in both peace and privacy."

This Popular Cruise Line Is Reimagining One of Its Ships to Be Completely Adults-Only

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:10am

If you love the idea of a classic ocean getaway but could do without the high-energy splash pads, long buffet lines and early-morning pool deck havoc that usually come with family-focused mega-ships, a major shift is heading to the high seas.

A prominent British cruise operator is leaning directly into the child-free travel boom by converting one of its mainstream vessels into a permanent, sanctuary-style getaway designed exclusively for the over-18 crowd.

Marella Cruisesrecently announced that its 1,800-passenger vessel, the Marella Discovery 2, will permanently pivot to an adults-only format starting in the winter of 2027. Interestingly, this ship actually has a long history with traditional family cruising; it originally debuted back in 1995 as Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas before joining the Marella fleet.

Now, the cruise line is systematically dismantling its kid-centric amenities to make way for elevated spaces that appeal to a completely different demographic. According a statement from the brand, the current youth clubs and play areas will be entirely transformed into grown-up hangouts, featuring a hidden speakeasy lounge, an interactive escape room, a dedicated karaoke venue and an upscale arts and crafts studio.

This move reflects a massive, industry-wide surge in travelers seeking out child-free spaces. Virgin Voyages famously pioneered the entirely adults-only model across its fleet when it launched in 2021, and legacy brands are starting to follow suit. For instance, Carnival Cruise Line recently converted several family-friendly voyages on its Carnival Firenze ship into exclusive, adults-only sailings under its new "SEA" program.

For Marella, the transformation of the Marella Discovery 2 marks its second vessel to ditch the kids' menus, following the success of its sister ship, the Marella Explorer 2.

"With demand for adults-only cruising continuing to grow, we're investing in four new onboard concepts to enhance the experience even further," Marella Cruises CEO Chris Hackney shared in an official statement.

For travelers looking to map out an unhurried winter escape, the redone ship will base its operations out of three major Spanish ports. From November 2027 through March 2028, it will sail out of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, introducing a brand-new seven-night "Atlantic Fusion" itinerary that highlights Spain’s Canary Islands and marks a return to Agadir, Morocco. In the spring of 2028, the ship will shift its homeport to Malaga.

To round out the adult-centric focus, the line is also expanding its "Cruise & Stay" packages by adding 39 new land-based partner hotels across Malaga, the Canaries, Barbados and the Dominican Republic, giving travelers an effortless way to extend their holiday on solid ground without ever having to navigate a bustling family resort.

1979 Rock Classic, Reimagined from 1975 No. 1 Hit, Remains a Timeless Breakup Anthem 47 Years Later

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:05am

In 1979, Van Halen kicked off their second studio album with “You’re No Good.” The song was a cover of the Linda Ronstadt classic that hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1975.

Originally written by Clint Ballard Jr, and performed by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963, "You’re No Good” was covered multiple times, but Van Halen put a hard rock spin on the tune less than five years after Ronstadt's version topped the charts.

Featuring Michael Anthony’s iconic bass intro, a soaring guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen, and David Lee Roth’s unmistakable, screeching vocals about moving on from a toxic ex, Van Halen’s version of the song wasn’t a chart hit, but it became a radio staple and concert favorite. Decades later, fans still resonate with the song's enduring theme and consider “You’re No Good” to be the ultimate hard rock breakup anthem.

There’s no denying that Van Halen’s version of “You’re No Good” sounds nothing like Ronstadt’s version or any before it.

In an interview shared by Van Halen News Desk, late Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen once said, “To me [it] doesn’t sound at all like the original. I’ve never actually heard the original; Linda Ronstadt didn’t write the song. It’s a great song, I think."

“{Producer] Ted [Templeman] suggested it, or he asked us about how we felt doing another cover song,” Van Halen recalled. “We said if the song is right and fits our style, and if we can arrange it to fit our style, then we’ll do it. … So Ted says, ‘Hey, how about ‘You’re No Good' …And I just started noodling around, and that’s how it came about. We never even listened to the record. It was just that I kind of remembered the changes, and because I didn’t listen to the record it didn’t sound the same."

“The song came out real basic,” he added of his band's version of the kiss-off classic.

Van Halen also defended the idea of taking a song and making the cover completely different.

"Whenever you do a cover tune – like, say, on the second album, when we did 'You’re No Good' – whenever you redo a cover tune, I don’t think you should do it like the original,” he told Talking Guitar magazine. “And I don’t think any cover tune we’ve ever done has been like the original. You know? And it takes almost as much time to make a cover tune sound original as it does writing a song.”

As for Ronstadt’s blues-driven version of the song, it almost didn’t make the cut for her 1974 album Heart Like a Wheel.

“’You’re No Good’ was a song that I picked as an afterthought,” she told Rock Cellar magazine. “We needed an up-tempo song for our show, and I had too many ballads, so we started playing that in our live shows, and this was before I recorded it,” she shared. “It had a different feel to it live. I wasn’t that invested in that song too much. I take that back, I was invested in all of my songs. But that was a song that I didn’t love singing like I loved singing a song like 'Heart Like A Wheel.'"

In the end, Ronstadt was “happy” with the recorded version of “You’re No Good,” but she admitted, “I didn’t think I sang it so well.”

1995 Alternative Rock Classic, Considered ‘One of Greatest Songs of all Time,’ Was Inspired by a ‘Very Lonely, Drunken Evening’

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 4:05am

Recorded for the second studio album, The Bends, Radiohead released "Fake Plastic Trees" as the third single for the anticipated, alt-rock album. Thom Yorke, the songwriter for the group, said that the song stemmed from a melody he had no idea what to do with, and a "very lonely, drunken evening and breakdown of sorts." Yorke did his best not to force the lyrics, instead just letting whatever was in his head end up on the page.

Recording sessions for The Bends, including those for "Fake Plastic Trees," were particularly tense due to the band's record label putting the pressure on to recreate the success they had had with "Creep." In the initial recordings the group struggled to agree on how the song should sound calling what they were ending up with "pompous and bombastic."

The group went to a concert put on by Jeff Buckley and Yorke was heavily inspired by Buckley's falsetto singing. Following the concert, Yorke recorded three versions of "Fake Plastic Trees" with just himself and an acoustic guitar. He was so moved upon hearing them played back he burst into tears. Yorke felt the track was too vulnerable to be released, but eventually conceded at the encouragement of his bandmates.

American audiences were not quite as receptive to "Fake Plastic Trees" as they were to "Creep," and the song never entered the Billboard Hot 100. Despite this, Radiohead did not give in to the label's pressure to "American-ize" the track saying, "If it doesn't get on the radio the way it is now, then I don't think it's going to get on the radio at all."

Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette was a huge fan of "Fake Plastic Trees" and even called it one of her favorite songs. She even covered the track on her 1996 tour. Of the song Morissette said, "It's this intangible, spiritual thing. It's a mood piece but lyrically [Yorke] delves into his own vulnerability and talks about materialism and fallibility."

Over the years "Fake Plastic Trees" has become known as one of the greatest of all time with Rolling Stone including it on their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

The Blunt Advice From Katharine Hepburn That Changed Jason Bateman Forever

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 3:34am

JasonBateman is having a busy year.

He’s starred in HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis and Netflix’s Black Rabbit and is preparing to direct the dark comedy The Cackling of the Dodos

As a child actor, the 57-year-old has been working for about 45 years. Bateman reflected on his past work experience in a recent interview with Deadline.

“I was very, very lucky to do a job with KatharineHepburn. I think it might’ve been her last job. I played her driver,” he said. “It was kind of a Driving Miss Daisy type of dynamic between our characters, and it was a movie of the week for CBS [This Can’t Be Love].”

This Can't Be Love starred Katharine Hepburn, AnthonyQuinn, and Jason Bateman

“And she and I were doing a scene where I had to get emotional, and it was just the two of us. And I remember I was trying to cry in the scene. I guess maybe I was just really pushing or really leaning into it too much, and in the middle of the take, she stopped, and she said, ‘Oh, stop acting!’ And it was crushing to hear in front of the crew and everybody,” he continued.

“And I said, ‘You mean for good, like professionally?’ And she was like, ‘No, no, no. Just say the words. You’re great. Just you don’t need to push and add the stuff. Just be human and say the words and be emotional. Don’t act emotional.’ It took me a while to decipher it all, but that was, in retrospect, a very helpful, economical way to tell an actor to stop acting and be a bit more real. I think I was maybe 19 or 20 at the time,” Bateman said.

Katharine Hepburn was a Hollywood legend. She earned four Academy Awards for Best Actress, the record for the honor. She is known for films such as On Golden Pond, The African Queen, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Quote of the Day: Inventor Sir Humphry Davy on Why Deserving Praise Matters More Than Receiving It

Tue, 06/30/2026 - 2:45am

Scientists have always been important to society, from creating life-saving vaccines to finding better ways to save people’s lives or just make them easier. We wouldn’t know how the Earth rotates or what the sun is without scientists, and chemists like Marie Curie discovered vital elements that contributed to our understanding of things such as radioactivity. Another famous chemist, Sir Humphry Davy, was also an inventor who created the Davy lamp in 1815, which was a safer lamp for coal miners to use, as it prevented explosions. According to Britannica, he also discovered several elements, including sodium and potassium. And our quote of the day from Davy is not one of his scientific findings, but instead is a reminder to put effort into your work without expecting anything in return.

The British chemist was born in 1778 in England and died in 1829. According to the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology (WLM), Davy originally wanted to be a surgeon, but instead, “a chance acquaintance led him to a life of research.” In his findings, he studied nitrous oxide, giving us the amazing nickname we know it as today: “laughing gas.” He was also the first to suggest using it for surgery to help alleviate pain.

In addition to the Davy lamp, he also invented the arc lamp, according to the American Physical Society (APS). These were the types of lights that London street lamps used in the early 1900s; they generated light through a “continuous electric spark.” They did need some tweaking from when he invented them in 1809 to when they could be used as street lamps, but still, he created the method. And speaking of “method,” Britannica calls Davy “one of the greatest exponents of the scientific method,” which is essentially how scientists use to test scientific hypotheses.

As the Science History Institute reported, with the fame Davy gained from giving lectures on his findings, discoveries and inventions came criticism and gossip. So even though he did receive many accolades throughout his career and is recognized as a major influential scientist, he didn’t always get those honors. And his feelings on this show up in today’s quote, which states that it’s better to do the work and not receive anything for it than to just receive recognition without any effort on your part.

Quote of the Day by Sir Humphry Davy

“It is better to deserve honours and not to have them, than to have them and not deserve them.”

This quote is from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Humphry Davy, which was published in 1836 by his brother, John Davy, according to Quote Investigator. It appears in Chapter Two of the book in a section where John Davy lists off “a selection of [Sir Humphry Davy’s] thoughts” on random things. These blurbs are from his notebooks over a period of time in his adult life.

Deeper Meaning of Sir Humphry Davy’s Quote—It’s Better To Deserve Praise and Not Get It vs. Receiving It When It's Not Deserved

Since this is a case of a simple line of wisdom from a rather intelligent inventor and scientist, it’s easy to take the quote in a lot of different ways.

Sticking to the more positive interpretation of this line, Sir Humphry Davy is saying that, even though it feels really great to receive accolades or recognition for your work, it’s better to know that you deserve them than it is to receive them. If you’re just working or doing something for the outward validation and to reap the rewards, you may not be doing it for the right reasons.

It’s better to put your best foot forward and do your best work every day—whether that be as a parent, as an employee, as a student, etc.—for yourself and for the satisfaction of a job well done. It’s always nice to receive recognition—but that’s not the core reason you should do something well. You should care about your work and know that you did your best; you deserve that honor, but if it goes to someone else, you know that you did your best and could have won it on your own merit.

Then, if you include the second half of the quote into the full meaning, he’s also saying that it’s better to do a good job on something—so well that you deserve recognition for it—than it is to be given the reward just because, without putting in the work. Sure, it might feel good temporarily to take shortcuts, but you don’t get as much out of the experience if you don’t deserve something and just get a reward for it anyway. The recognition can fall flat in these instances.

So when you set out to do something, remember Sir Humphry Davy’s wise words: it’s better to put forth effort and care with a task and not receive attention for it than to phone it in and be honored for a lackluster performance.

More Quotes from Sir Humphry Davy
  • “Nothing is so dangerous to the progress of the human mind than to assume that our views of science are ultimate, that there are no mysteries in nature, that our triumphs are complete and that there are no new worlds to conquer.”
  • “Life is made up, not of great sacrifices or duties, but of little things, in which smiles and kindnesses and small obligations, given habitually, are what win and preserve the heart, and secure comfort.”
  • “You are now in a state in which a fly would be whose microscopic eye was changed to one similar to that of man: and you are wholly unable to associate what you see with your former knowledge.”
  • “The more we know, the more we feel our ignorance; the more we feel how much remains unknown”

Harry and Meghan Markle's five day trip to the UK in July along with their children Prince Archie (7) and Princess Lilibet Diana (5) will mark the first time in four years the Sussexes have visited the country as a family.

A meeting between Archie and Lilibet and their grandfatherKing Charles III had been on the cards—but now it might not happen, with sources close to Harry telling the Guardian, "The hope is they can meet their grandfather, but there is no way that can happen if they are chased by paparazzi wherever they go from the moment they step off the plane."

They added, "He won’t put his children through that.”

However the Duke of Sussex is continuing to "'explore every available option" that will allow him to bring his wife and children to the UK safely.

The source said that the Sussexes' plans "to see family, friends and visit various charitable causes close to the duke’s heart have been pulled out from under their feet at the 11th hour."

The Daily Mail reports that Harry is claiming that his father's aides (the infamous "men in grey suits") are responsible for his security request being denied.

Harry is fifth in line to the throne, and Archie and Lilibet are sixth and seventh in line respectively.

The children have not seen Charles since since the Sussexes visited the UK in 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

No photograph of Charles with both of the Sussex grandchildren is known to exist.

Charles has offered Harry and Meghan accommodation at Buckingham Palace when they arrive in the UK in a few weeks. The offer has yet to be accepted.

The Sussexes are currently on vacation in Europe, and had been planning to come to the UK for countdown events for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, which take place from July 10-17.

They are said to be critical of the fact that "celebrities like Taylor Swift" receive taxpayer funded security while their own case has been denied.

Taylor Swift gets a police escort when in London after her concert in Vienna was the object of a planned terrorist attack in 2024, which was ultimately uncovered and neutralised.

A source also criticized Charles' decision to evict Harry and Meghan from their previous UK residence of Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, and said that the palace was responsible for leaking the offer of accommodation at Buckingham Palace.

"Harry really wants his children to see their grandpa. It's not clear how keen the King is to see them if it involves all these theatrics," the source said.

They went on, "Harry is furious that the King's aides leaked plans for the Sussex family to stay at Buckingham Palace for part of the visit. He feels that has endangered his family because, while they are protected by the security cordon when they are inside the palace, they are vulnerable as soon as they leave it.

"At least when they were living at Frogmore Cottage there were several exits from the Windsor estate that made it more difficult for them to be spotted and followed. But of course, they were evicted from there to punish them for quitting.

"Harry is now looking at alternative royal accommodation for part of the stay as well as somewhere else that is privately owned."

It is thought that Harry and Meghan's visit will include a stay for one or two nights at Althorp House, Princess Diana's ancestral estate. Diana is buried on an artificial island on a lake at Althorp, and the Sussexes are reportedly hoping to bring their children to their grandmother's grave for the first time.
