Rock Legend Diagnosed With ALS: ‘It Crushes Me Not to Be Able to Play’
Ross “The Boss” Friedman has revealed that he is battling ALS.
The 72-year-old guitarist—who is a founding member of the rock band the Dictators and the heavy metal band Manowar—was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) after suffering from a variety of symptoms for months.
“It’s difficult to know what lies ahead, and it crushes me not to be able to play guitar, but the outpouring of love has been so, so strong,” Friedman said in a Monday, February 9, statement. “I’m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans. I love you all.”
Per a statement from his publicist, Friedman learned of his diagnosis after experiencing “seemingly unrelated symptoms,” including weakness in his hands and legs, for “several months.” He initially thought his issues were caused by a “series of very minor strokes,” but “changes in diet, exercise and added physical therapy did nothing to slow the progression or increase his strength.”
ALS—which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease—is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms gets worse over time, and there is no cure for the fatal disease.
Friedman co-founded the Dictators alongside Andy “Adny” Shernoff and Scott “Top Ten” Kempner in New York City in 1972. The punk rock pioneers’ most successful album during Friedman’s stint as lead guitarist was 1977’s Manifest Destiny.
In 1980, Friedman and Joey DeMaio formed Manowar. Friedman played with the heavy metal band throughout the decade, releasing six albums with the group. Manowar’s 1984 record, Hail to England, was ranked as one of Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest metal albums of all time.
Throughout his career, Friedman played with several bands, including the Ross the Boss band, Shakin’ Street, Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom, the Spinatras, Brain Surgeons and Death Dealer.
Friedman was inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame in 2017.
Prior to publicly revealing his ALS diagnosis, Friedman was still touring as he posted a peek at his life on the road in a May 2025 Instagram post.
“The RTB Band has been busy!” he wrote at the time. “First we destroyed the Epic Fest in Rosgilde Denmark the three killer shows in Turkey the four amazing shows in Australia.”

View this post on InstagramHowever, behind the joyful moment, others expressed panic, flooding the comments with reactions like “Don't jumpscare us like this.”
“Bro !! You don’t need to put up pictures in this format!! Don’t scare people like that!!” one wrote.
Since the black-and-white photos are usually linked to death announcements, a commenter admitted, “I really hesitated to scroll any further. Maybe chill with the black and white photos.”
“Y’all can’t be posting black-and-white photos, while be celebratory lol…” a follower echoed.
“Stop posting pics in black and white like this!! Almost had a heart attack,” a commenter added.
The same goes for an Instagram user who said, “Y'all need to start putting the word (“Celebratory”) at the bottom of the pic.”
“Almost had a heart attack. Why post a black-and-white pic? Congrats! Malaysia boleh!” a fan noted.
In addition to the upcoming Hollywood Walk of Fame honor, Yeoh stars in a new film, Sandiwara, which will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.

Country Music Legend, Who Worked With the Monkees, The Judds & Others, Dead at 70
The country music world is mourning the loss of steel guitar player Pete Finney, who died on Feb. 7, according to a social media post by the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was 70.
Though Finney may have been best known for his work with such country artists as the Chicks, Vince Gill, the Judds, Reba McEntire, and Patty Loveless, his talent was not limited to artists only associated with that genre.
Late Monkees member Michael Nesmith enlisted Finney for his solo work with his country-flavored solo project the First National Band and later brought him along on his final tour with the Monkees in 2017. Finney also played on Micky Dolenz’s 2021 tribute album to his late bandmate, Dolenz Sings Nesmith.
A diverse list of other artists who used Finney’s talent both in the recording studio and concert stage includes Beck, Justin Townes Earle, Jim Lauderdale, Allison Moorer, Ron Sexsmith, Candi Staton and dozens of others.
“He exemplified how top instrumentalists can adapt to a range of styles and settings, whether in a recording studio, a concert stage, or the corner of a small nightclub,” noted the Country Music Hall of Fame’s post, announcing Finney’s passing.
Finney was born and raised in Maryland but headed to Austin in the late 1970s to play with late legendary Tex-Mex pioneer Doug Sahm. A decade later, he relocated to Nashville where he joined Foster & Lloyd’s touring band and worked with Radney Foster and Bill Lloyd as solo artists.
Aside from his work as a musician, Finney also had deep knowledge of American music history, which he shared with the public when he served as the co-curator of the “Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City” exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibit explored the period in the 1960s and 1970s when non-country musicians visited Nashville to work with the city’s ace studio musicians. Finney co-wrote the book on the exhibit which won him the Chet Flippo Award for excellence in country music journalism from the International Country Music Conference.
A few notable musicians offered condolences to Finney in the comments of the Country Music Hall of Fame’s tribute on Instagram.
“I’ve known and worked with Pete for many years. What a terrible loss. 😞,” wrote country singer Mandy Barnett.
“Pete was an absolute sweetheart of a human. He’ll be greatly missed in the Nashville music community,” added singer-guitarist Jeremy Fetzer.
“A gut punch to the scene, one of the nicest guys you could ever meet,” singer Jonah Kraut added.

2000s Rock Band Announces Two Shows for 20th Anniversary
These two rock bands are celebrating the 20th anniversaries of these exciting projects.
On Monday, Alexisonfire announced via Instagram that they and Billy Talent are co-headlining two shows this upcoming summer to celebrate the 20th anniversaries of their respective albums: Crisis by Alexisonfire and Billy Talent's Billy Talent II.
The first show will take place in London's Ovo Arena Wembley with support from Touché Amoré on June 24, while the final show will be at the Bell Centre in Montreal on July 17, with Faze opening the concert. At both shows, the bands will be playing their respective albums front-to-back.
In addition, Alexisonfire announced that they partnered with the Plus1 organization, and a dollar from each ticket sale will support ASTTeQ, the EB Research Partnership and War Child Canada.
View this post on InstagramAlexisonfire released their third studio album, Crisis, on Aug. 22, 2006, and it was their first album that marked Jordan Hastings as their drummer, who replaced Jesse Ingelevics a year prior. The record was made at Metalworks and Silo Recording Studios in Ontario, with Julius Butty producing with the band. Crisis features 11 tracks, including the singles "Boiled Frogs", "This Could Be Anywhere In The World," "Rough Hands" and "Drunks, Lovers, Sinners and Saints," which were all put out before the full release of the album. In addition, there are two additional tracks that appear on the bonus USB materials. The album debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart, selling over 20,000 units in the first week.
The post-hardcore band was formed in Ontario in 2001. They gained popularity thanks to their self-titled debut album in 2002, which features their single "Pulmonary Archery." Since its formation, they have released five studio albums, with their most recent being Otherness in 2022. Its current members include Hastings, Chris Steele, George Pettit, Wade MacNeil and Dallas Green.
George Pettit of Alexisonfire performs onstage during 2000 Trees Music Festival at Upcote Farm on July 12, 2025 in Cheltenham, England.Meanwhile, Billy Talent is another Canadian rock band formed in Ontario, but in 1993. Consisting of Benjamin Kowalewicz, Ian D'Sa, Jonathan Gallant and Aaron Solowoniuk, Billy Talent has sold over one million albums in Canada alone and nearly three million internationally throughout their 30-year career.
The group put out their second studio album as Billy Talent (they originally formed as Pezz), Billy Talent II, in 2006, which follows their self-titled album, released in 2003. It also debuted at No. 1 on the Canadian Albums Chart, selling 48,000 copies in its first week, and reached No. 1 on the German albums chart. Compared to Billy Talent, their 2006 record is less angry and more mellow, with most of their songs dealing with real-life issues.
"We scaled the anger and language back a bit," Jonathan Gallant told the Ottawa Sun back in 2007. "Not because we had to, but because we’ve mellowed a lot since we made our first record, Billy Talent, in 2003. We’ve matured as men and as a band, enough to know that you can’t force anger."
Billy Talent II has 13 songs, which were all written by the band. It was recorded in various studios around Canada from Fall 2005 to 2006.

'90s Rock Band Announces Ultra-Rare Tour After 14 Years
Little Angels, one of the most loved UK rock bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s, have announced an ultra-rare UK tour for November 2026, ending a 14-year wait for fans who thought they might never see the group live again.
The announcement was made through the band’s official Instagram account, confirming that the Big Bad & Back tour will feature the full original lineup and span 11 dates across the United Kingdom.
The Scarborough-formed band last toured in 2012, following a highly praised comeback performance at Download Festival. That run came nearly two decades after their sold-out farewell show at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1994. With no full tour since then, the new dates instantly became one of the most talked-about reunion announcements in UK hard rock.

The band confirmed that vocalist Toby Jepson, guitarist Bruce Dickinson, keyboardist Jim Dickinson, bassist Mark Plunkett and drummer Mark Richardson will all be taking part. For many longtime fans, seeing all five original members on stage again is what makes this tour especially rare.
Tickets for the tour go on sale Friday at 9 a.m. GMT.
View this post on InstagramLittle Angels formed nearly 40 years ago and rose from the tail end of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. By the late ’80s and early ’90s, they had become one of the defining bands of the U.K. hard rock scene, helped by regular coverage in magazines like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer, as well as constant touring.
Across their career, the band earned 11 UK Top 40 singles and released four successful albums. Their 1993 record Jam reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart, cementing their place in British rock history. They also shared stages with major acts including Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top and Faith No More.
Vocalist Toby Jepson explained why the timing finally feels right to return. “We have the best fans in the world,” he said, according to Blabbermouth. “For nearly 40 years they’ve stood by the band despite the rarity of shows and new music. It feels like the right time to come back together, for all the right reasons. Playing music as friends, for friends, because we love it.”
Adding to the excitement, Luke Morley of Thunder will support Little Angels on all tour dates. Morley is a longtime friend of the band and a key figure from the same classic UK hard rock era.
“I think this will be a fantastic celebration of that amazing time when Thunder and Little Angels both broke through,” Morley said. “I’m delighted to be opening for the guys.” He also hinted that fans can expect a few Thunder songs during his set.

'90s Rock Band's Legendary Anthem Is Shooting Back Up the Charts 34 Years Later
As those of us who were around at the time know, Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" was nothing short of an era-defining anthem. (If you've never screamed "F—k you, I won't do what you tell me" at the top of your lungs can you even call yourself a Gen X-er?)
Originally inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles riots that happened after the police officers who brutally beat Rodney King were acquitted, the protest song is more meaningful than ever...proven by the fact that the 34-year-old song is back at the top of the charts.
As Forbes reported, "Killing in the Name" returned to both the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales and Alternative Digital Song Sales charts, taking the #5 and #7 spots, respectively. Previously, the song hit #3 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart, but this latest surge marks a new peak for the song on the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart, no doubt fueled by its recent popularity with protesters in Minneapolis.
Tom Morello called Zack de la Rocha's lyrics 'brilliant'In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello called the line "F—k you, I won’t do what you tell me" a “universal sentiment”.
“While it’s a simple lyric, I think it’s one of [singer Zack de la Rocha’s] most brilliant,” he said, adding, “And to me, it relates to [19th century U.S. abolitionist] Frederick Douglass."
"Frederick Douglass said that the moment he became free was not the moment that he was physically loosed from his bonds," Morello continued. "It was the moment when master said, ‘Yes.’ And he said, ‘No.’ And that’s the essence of ‘F—k you, I will not do what you tell me.’ And that’s why it’s encouraging to hear it shouted at the Fed goons who are shooting tear gas at American citizens.”
Morello also revealed that initially, the band left the lyrics off album's lyric sheet, "because it’s I think it’s two lines, 16 ‘f—k yous,’ and one ‘motherf—ker.’ And we’re like, in the midst of all this grand political poetry, let’s just that one stand for itself.”
Over three decades later, it's still standing.

Savannah Guthrie's Mom Nancy: What Makes Ransom Deadline Passing 'So Dangerous,' According to Retired FBI Agent (Exclusive)
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing after another ransom deadline passed—and a former FBI agent explained what makes the situation "so dangerous" in an exclusive interview with Parade.
On Monday, Feb. 9, the second ransom deadline expired at 5 p.m. following the 84-year-old's abduction from her Tucson, Ariz., home. So, what happens next?
In his experience working kidnapping cases, Jason Pack, a retired FBI special agent, told Parade that "deadlines are almost always a pressure tool designed to create urgency and force a response."
"The vast majority of the time when a deadline passes, the kidnapper extends it or shifts demands because they want the money," he noted. "A deadline only has power if the family believes it’s real. The concern is whether the person behind this is a calculated actor who understands that dynamic or someone unpredictable. That uncertainty is what makes this so dangerous."
Additionally, Pack addressed "hard realities" at this point in Nancy's missing person case.
"Nine days is a long time. I don’t say that to alarm anyone, but it would be dishonest not to acknowledge it," he said. "Nancy Guthrie is 84 years old with a pacemaker and needs daily medication. Every day that passes without her being located makes this case more urgent from a health and survival standpoint alone. That timeline weighs heavily on investigators and on this family."
View this post on InstagramPack also acknowledged that the ransom notes so far could be a "hoax," as law enforcement did not confirm any of them to be authentic, and no proof of life was made public.
"The notes went to media outlets rather than to the family, which is not how a traditional kidnap for ransom works," Pack explained. "A real kidnapper wants a private channel and direct leverage over the family. Sending demands to TV stations is either the work of a very unsophisticated actor or potentially someone who doesn’t have Nancy at all and is exploiting a terrible situation for money. Investigators have to work both possibilities simultaneously, and that divides resources and attention during a critical window."

Ultimately, the investigation itself will continue.
"A deadline is the kidnapper’s timeline, not law enforcement’s," Pack pointed out. "The FBI and Pima County Sheriff will continue working this aggressively, whether the deadline passes or not. Regardless of whether these ransom notes are real or a hoax, Nancy Guthrie is still missing. That fact remains. Someone in the Tucson area or southern Arizona saw something."
View this post on InstagramOn Feb. 1, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) launched its search for Nancy, who was last seen on the evening of Jan. 31, at her home. The PCSD soon declared her residence a crime scene, determining that Nancy was “taken” from her residence “against her will.” Law enforcement also confirmed that the blood discovered at the home belonged to her.
Investigators have since returned to Savannah’s mom’s home multiple times to search for evidence. A video of a vehicle of interest was submitted to law enforcement, in addition to agents finding a camera on the roof of Nancy’s home. The FBI also made a strategic move across several states.
In the meantime, multiple alleged ransom notes surfaced, and Nancy's family sent several public video messages to the captors. A Feb. 7 video featured Savannah saying to the camera, "We received your message, and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace.”
The Today co-anchor concluded, “This is very valuable to us, and we will pay."
View this post on InstagramOn Feb. 9, just hours before the second ransom deadline, Savannah posted a video on Instagram to fans, thanking them for their prayers on behalf of herself and her siblings, Annie Guthrie and Camron Guthrie.
"We believe our mom is still out there," Savannah said. "We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken, and we don't know where."
She reiterated, "We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help."
Those with any information about Nancy’s missing case are advised to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

2000s Rock Band Wipes Instagram After Pulling Out of Controversial Festival
The American rock band Shinedown, which was formed in the early 2000s, confused fans with its latest move, as the group completely cleared its Instagram account, leaving fans with plenty of questions about the reason behind the decision.
While there are officially no posts on the account anymore, the group teased what it all could mean with a temporary post on Shinedown's Instagram Stories, with the band re-sharing band member Brent Smith's video of a music recording studio with text over it simply reading, "EIGHT."
Although it's not confirmed, this likely refers to the band's highly anticipated next album, which will be the group's eighth studio album.
In recent months, members of the band have excitedly teased the new album, although fans are still eagerly awaiting any concrete details. In January, drummer Barry Kerch stated on The Mistress Carrie Podcast, "I know the announcement's coming out this month. This month, the announcement will be made, and the album title, everything will be out there, and a date for the release will be out there this month."
Unfortunately, that didn't end up happening, leaving fans confused about what's going on. While it's still unclear what the social media wipe means, it seems likely that this could be connected to the upcoming new music.
View this post on InstagramWhile the band's Instagram account is cleared, various band members still have content about the group on their accounts, such as clips from past performances or personal messages. There are also videos and pictures still visible on Shinedown's account in the various Highlights.

Along with the new album expected to drop this year, Shinedown recently drew attention for its decision to pull out of a controversial music festival called Rock the Country.
On Friday, Feb. 6, the group shared a since-deleted message about the decision not to perform in the festival, saying, "SHINEDOWN is everyone’s band. We feel that we have been given a platform to bring all people together through the power of music and song."
The message went on, "We have one BOSS, and it is everyone in the audience. Our band’s purpose is to unite, not divide. With that in mind, we have made the decision that we will not be playing the Rock The Country Festival.”
Creed and Ludacris also pulled out of the festival around the same time as Shinedown.

Classic Rock Band Answers Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Show With One Sentence
In the wake of the culture-war backlash surrounding Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, a legendary rock band is responding — not with outrage, but with a message of unity.
On Sunday night, February 8, Foreigner shared a clip on their official Facebook page paired with a simple but pointed message that echoed a banner displayed during the halftime show: “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”

The post featured footage from last year, when the band released a Spanish-language version of their biggest hit, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” underscoring the sentiment with music rather than commentary. The timing was unmistakable, arriving as conservative backlash continued to swirl around Bad Bunny’s largely Spanish-language halftime performance.
Foreigner’s Spanish version of the song, titled “Quiero Saber Si Es Amor,” featured current lead vocalist Luis Maldonado alongside Grammy-winning Mexican singer-songwriter Joy Huerta of Jesse & Joy. The release was widely praised when it debuted, positioning the band as one of many legacy acts embracing a more global, inclusive audience.
Fans quickly flooded Foreigner’s comments with support.
“Love is a language all its own,” one fan wrote. “Just a stunning performance. Nothing but love here,” added another.
Several fans also referenced original frontman Lou Gramm, with one writing, “Thank you — Lou probably loved that. He is that kind of person.”
A handful of negative comments appeared as well, criticizing the band for releasing music in Spanish. But those remarks were swiftly drowned out by fans pushing back.
“Love people showing their true colors online,” one commenter responded, adding a heart emoji.
Foreigner has long acknowledged the diversity of its audience, and the band previously said recording songs in Spanish was a way to thank Latino fans who have supported them for decades. In the middle of a polarized Super Bowl moment, their response struck a different tone, one rooted in the very song that made them global stars.
Former Detroit Lions Player Tracy Scroggins Dead at 56
Detroit Lions fans are mourning the loss of one of the franchise’s longtime defensive standouts.
Tracy Scroggins, who spent his entire 10-year NFL career with Detroit, has died at the age of 56, TMZ Sports confirmed on Monday, February 9. His family shared the news in a statement that reflected both pride in his football legacy and heartbreak over the struggles he faced after leaving the game.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Tracy Scroggins,” the Scroggins family said in a statement to the outlet. “Tracy was a devoted father, cherished family member, and loyal friend whose life was marked by remarkable strength and perseverance. While many knew him for his career as a professional football player in the NFL, those closest to him knew him as a kind-hearted and generous man who cared deeply for his family and friends.”
View this post on InstagramThey continued, “Playing in the NFL gave Tracy the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream and to rise from poverty. However, unfortunately, the NFL was also ultimately the cause of his untimely demise. Tracy spent every moment of retirement courageously battling the devastating effects of CTE. While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace.”

Scroggins was selected by the Lions in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft, taken 53rd overall out of the University of Tulsa. He played both linebacker and defensive end during his career, becoming a steady contributor on Detroit’s front seven throughout the 1990s.
After his playing days ended in 2001, Scroggins became one of many former players to speak out about the toll football can take on the brain. In 2016, he filed a lawsuit against the NFL alleging he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain condition linked to repeated head trauma.
At this time, the exact cause and circumstances surrounding Scroggins’ death have not been made public.
’70s Rock Icon Announces Legendary Tribute Album
In honor of the pioneering American blues singer B.B. King's 100th birthday, a star-studded lineup of rockers have come together to release B.B. King's Blues Summit 100 — a tribute album produced by blues rock artist Joe Bonamassa with 32 new covers of King's greatest hits, which went live today.
Among the featured artists is English rocker and guitarist Eric Clapton, who covers arguably King's most famous song "The Thrill Is Gone" alongside the iconic Chaka Khan. Some of the other big names on the album include Slash, Train, Marcus King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and many more.
View this post on InstagramIn an announcement post shared to social media last Friday, Bonamassa — who started his career at the age of 12 opening for King — wrote, "I am so honored to have produced along with Josh Smith a tribute to our friend, mentor and musical hero Mr. B.B. King for his centennial birthday. It is a celebration of his legacy that I sincerely hope he would be proud of."
Clapton's appearance on the tribute album would not mark the first time the rocker has interacted with King or his music. The two artists have a deep history together dating back to the 1960s, when Clapton was beginning his career. Clapton has always cited King as one of his earliest influences, especially King's 1965 album B.B. King Live at the Regal.
"B.B. is like a father figure and uncle," Clapton once said in an interview. "He’s this genius artist to me. I can’t ever see myself as being in the same league with him."

The two musicians reportedly met for the first time in 1967 at the New York City spot Cafe Au Go-Go, when King invited Clapton — then of the British supergroup Cream — to jam with him. After crossing paths on several more occasions, the two finally collaborated on their first work together when Clapton featured on King's re-recorded version of "Rock Me Baby" for his 1997 album Deuces Wild.
After more than 30 years since Clapton and King first met, the two musicians finally recorded and released a joint album together in 2000 called Riding with the King, which ended up winning the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
In a 2000 interview with Where's Eric!Magazine, B.B. King spoke about the collaborative album: "The way Eric plays, it really touches me, so when we’re playing together it’s good chemistry. He’ll look at me some time when we’re playing, we get into something — we don’t say anything, we just get into it — and I’m hitting them hard and he’s hitting them hard. Then he’ll look at me and smile and we really get into it."

Clapton and King formed a deep connection and friendship that lasted up until King's death in 2015. Since then, Clapton has continued to honor King and the legacy he has left behind as a major pioneer of blues music. "There are not many left that play it in the pure way that B.B. did," Clapton said in a video following King's death. "He was a beacon for all of us who loved this kind of music and I thank him from the bottom of my heart."
King would have turned 100 years old in 2025, and the release of B.B. King's Blues Summit 100 ensures that the legendary blues artist continues to impact people even posthumously.

Legendary ’80s Rocker Admits to Hating Stage Name 49 Years After Beginning Career
Before audiences knew him as John Mellencamp, the rock legend went by the name of Johnny Cougar.
In a recent appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher, the rock legend opened up the stage name that was given to him by his record label— and how much he hated it.
"I walk in and they had a picture and they said, 'This is the album cover: Johnny Cougar.' And I went, 'No.'" The album in question was Mellencamp's debut, The Chestnut Street Incident. Mellencamp wasn't a fan of the stage name.
"Here was my choices: You can either go back to Indiana, or you can be Johnny Cougar. I mean, I was pissed off. I got up and walked out. I said, 'I'm not doing this.'" But, ultimately, he went along with it, and the rest is history.
View this post on InstagramCritics, however took Mellencamp's side. "The critics did not like [Johnny Cougar]. They though it was cornball."
During that same appearance, Mellencamp also revealed another major decision he hated: the inclusion of "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. (A Salute to 60's Rock)" on his record, Scarecrow.
"I just thought, this is f—ing stupid and silly," Mellencamp said of the track, explaining that he didn't think it fit with the other material on Scarecrow.
Mellencamp recounted that his record label was enthusiastic about the song and believed it had hit potential, but he resisted putting it on the album. To settle the disagreement, the two sides made an arm-wrestling bet: if Mellencamp won, the song would stay off the record. When the bout tied, he was obliged to include it.
Even though Mellencamp isn't the biggest fan of the song, he confirmed that "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." will most definitely be included in the set list for his upcoming Dancing Words tour. The track is just one of many hits that fans in attendance can expect to hear.
