When I was a freshman in high school, I read George Orwell'sAnimal Farm for the first time, and it wasn't really for me. Little did I know back then that one of the greatest bands of all time had adapted the book into a better, more thematically interesting, and more emotionally resonant form. That album is "Animals" by Pink Floyd.

Heading out of 1975, Pink Floyd was coming off of genuinely one of the greatest albums ever put to sound in "Wish You Were Here." The monumental meditation on the destruction and selling of the soul is in an elite echelon of some of the hardest albums to follow up ever. An album that captures the vastness of the human condition in such a compelling and sonically expansive way is a feat that only a few bands have accomplished. The thing you need to understand about Pink Floyd, however, is that they made the best album of all time four times in a row.

"Animals" was the follow-up to the enormous previous record, an adaption of Orwell's famous novel that features three of the band's absolute greatest songs. It's a politically charged, angry, groovy, and legendary record that sits as many fans' favorite album of theirs. Full of their acute understanding of the world around them, the system they exist in, and the musical mastery of one of the greatest bands of all time, the album is a firm statement that they have plenty left to contribute.

Legendary Songs that Elevated the Original Book to Another Level

"Animals" is unique in that it's an album I consistently find myself having a different favorite song from every time I listen to it. The album is mostly composed of three behemoth tracks: "Dogs," "Pigs (Three Different Ones), and 'Sheep." Each of these fit right in with the pantheon of Floyd's most epic and enduring songs.

"Dogs" is the first of the trio of epic tracks that take up the middle part of the record. The song occupies this sonic space that is so cold, weary, and bitter. The opening lyric of "you got to be crazy" cuts extremely hard and immediately places you into the atmosphere of violence and desperation that the allegorical parameters of the album exist within. "Dogs" is a look at the violence the system perpetuates and the people who are avatars of that. It understands so clearly that aggression and hatred are fueled by sadness and unfulfillment, and the song takes you on a journey through the harshness of that concept for its entire runtime.

As I write today, "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" is my favorite song on the album. It features one of my favorite things you can hear on a Pink Floyd song, and it's not something that happens too often. Guitarist David Gilmour is on bass for this song, and this song here features my favorite bass part in any of their songs. It serves as this awesome, slinky groove that sits under Roger Waters' vitriolic and venomous delivery of the scathing lyrics. "Pigs" is about the elite, and the ways they suck up and destroy everyone below them. Easily the harshest song on the album, the squealing talk box solo and the escalation of sound at the end of the track make it one of my absolute favorite songs from the band.

Rounding out the trilogy of excellence on this album is "Sheep," a song about the blindness of the common man and the uprising that must take place. The momentum of this song is so incredible, with the thumping bass part combining with maybe David Gilmour's most underrated guitar work of the band's career. Seriously, the ending of this song is such an incredible piece of composition. As Roger screams "get out of the road if you want to grow old," the guitars explode into this rapturous and joyful groove that feels like pure freedom. It's a welcome solace from the oppressive sound and content of the album thus far.

Bookending the album is the lovely and overlooked "Pigs on the Wing," which is a heartfelt and simple reminder that the path forward is through love, compassion, and looking out for one another. If nothing else, we have each other in this cruel world. I'll let Waters' lovely writing speak for itself.

I absolutely love "Animals." It's top three Floyd for me, and I feel it is consistently overlooked. Part of that is because of when it released in the band's history, as its sandwiched between two of the most popular albums ever. Nevertheless, the record is a musical marvel that never ceases to impress me.

Laverne Cox claims she's lost 90% of her income over the last few years because of Donald Trump’s administration. 

The actress spoke to The Guardian while promoting her new book “Transcendent: A Memoir.”

“This regime has threatened to defund any colleges and universities that promote gender ideology, DEI [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion],” she said.

Cox grew up in Mobile, Alabama, during the 1970s. She was bullied as a child for being effeminate and then physically and emotionally abused as a young adult.

At 11 years old, the actress said she was “going to sleep every night praying I would wake up different.” Adding, “I suspect I’m not the only one who lived a childhood with a parent who maybe didn’t fully understand them around their transness or being an artist.”

Cox went on to star in the hit 2013 TV series Orange Is the New Black, for which she earned an Emmy. She also spoke at colleges and businesses, worked as a brand ambassador, and hosted red carpets.

She shared that she has seen limited work since Trump took office.

“All these words had to be taken out of every piece of legislation, policy, government document: gender, gender ideology, gender identity, LGBTQ, DEI, abortion, contraception,” she explained.

Cox said that finding teaching jobs has been difficult because “even though I’d be teaching a graduate acting class, it could be perceived as promoting trans ideology. These are the realities,” the actress said.

She added, “I’m not complaining – I’m very blessed. I think the important thing to note is that if Laverne Cox’s income has gone down significantly, what about all the other trans people who are not as privileged and as blessed as I am? There are material consequences for this kind of discrimination and scapegoating.”

Cox’s book, “Transcendent: A Memoir,” was published on June 9.

The Midwest audience was one of the last to catch the "Save Me" singer before news of his divorce from wife Bunnie Xo broke on Monday.

Jelly Roll — real name Jason DeFord — filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years on May 18 in Tennessee. According to TMZ, the decision to end their marriage was mutual.

That didn't stop some critics from using his personal life as a joke in response to the duet video.

Fans of Australian rock bands are having a great week after a new Red Hot Summer Tour was announced. The event features legendary group Men at Work, which in itself is worth getting excited about, but to add to the hype, another band is reuniting after 40 years for the tour.

Australian Crawl, which disbanded in 1986, is coming back together after decades to perform on this tour. Frontman James Reyne is getting back together with guitarist Simon Binks and drummer David Reyne for the special event. This will also be the first time Australian Crawl and Men at Work have toured together, as reported by Rolling StoneAustralia.

The tour will take place all over Australia, with 10 dates set for October and November 2026. The first date will be in Toowoomba, Queensland, on Oct. 17, while the tour will wrap up in Glenelg, South Australia, on Nov. 15.

Along with Australian Crawl and Men at Work, the tour also features Birds of Tokyo, Vika & Linda, Eskimo Joe, Boom Crash Opera, and Ella Hooper.

Talking about the band's legacy, David said, “Back in 1979, a bunch of us from the beaches of the Mornington Peninsula twanged some guitars, banged some drums, blended together some tunes and played a gig or two for the local board riders’ club. Australian Crawl was born."

"What a delight it will be to do it all again with those of us from the original gang who haven’t yet propped permanently at Heaven’s Bar," he concluded. A few former members of Australian Crawl have died. Founding member and guitarist Brad Robinson dying in 1996 from lymphoma, while rhythm guitarist Guy McDonough died in 1984 due to complications from pneumonia.

Despite only being active from 1978 to 1986, Australian Crawl made their mark on rock music, with hits like "Reckless (Don't Be So…)," "The Boys Light Up," and "Beautiful People," among others.

On this day 53 years ago, one of country music's most emotional songs reached the top of the charts.

Tammy Wynette scored her 14th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with "Kids Say the Darndest Things," a poignant ballad that continues to resonate with listeners more than five decades later.

Released in 1973 as the title track from her album of the same name, the song tells the story of a mother trying to shield her child from the pain of a failing marriage. Rather than focusing on the adults involved, the lyrics reveal the heartbreak through the innocent questions and observations of a young child, a perspective that gives the song its lasting emotional power.

Written by Bobby Braddock, the song became one of Wynette's signature recordings during one of the most successful stretches of her career.

In a retrospective marking the anniversary of its chart success, American Songwriter named "Kids Say the Darndest Things" one of the most heartbreaking songs in country music history, praising its ability to capture the devastating effects of divorce from a child's point of view.

The song also reflected the kind of emotionally honest storytelling that made Wynette one of country music’s defining voices.

By 1973, she had already become a superstar with classics including "Stand by Your Man," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" and "I Don’t Wanna Play House." Many of her biggest hits explored the complexities of love, marriage and family, but few struck quite as emotional a chord as "Kids Say the Darndest Things."

The single spent one week at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, becoming the latest in a remarkable run of chart-toppers that established Wynette as one of the genre’s greatest performers.

Her heartfelt delivery elevated an already powerful lyric, allowing listeners to feel every ounce of the mother's quiet anguish as she struggled to answer questions no parent ever wants to hear.

Despite her meteoric success, Wynette always considered herself an “average woman.” In a resurfaced interview, the country star said, “I just have a different job, that’s all. I feel when I’m on stage singing I have been what so many of the women in that audience are. I’ve worked in shoe factories, I’ve been a waitress, I’ve been a barmaid, I worked in garment factories. I have done so many things. I worked in the fields picking cotton, bailing hay, pulling corn. And I feel that I can relate to the everyday things, the crises that they go through, the everyday changes and the happenings in their life that happened to them. I know because I’ve been there, so I don’t feel any different from them”

More than 50 years later, the song continues to be celebrated as one of country music's finest examples of narrative songwriting. Its themes of innocence, heartbreak and unconditional love remain as relatable today as they were in 1973.

On the anniversary of its rise to No. 1, "Kids Say the Darndest Things" stands not only as another chart-topping success for Tammy Wynette, but as one of the most moving and enduring classics in the history of country music.

As one of the host countries for the 2026 World Cup, the United States is currently going viral on social media as international travelers descend to attend the soccer tournament. You might think that a band's most streamed songs on Spotify would also be their biggest hits...but that's actually not always the case. Take the Beatles, for example. Considering the iconic band had a whopping 20 tunes go all the way to #1 on the charts (and 34 Top 10 hits), it would make sense if the only Beatles song on Spotify to have over a billion streams would be among those chart-toppers. As it turns out, however, the Fab Four's most streamed song never even made a showing on the Billboard Hot 100.

George Harrison's Abbey Road (1969) masterpiece, "Here Comes the Sun," currently has 1,843,025,190 streams on Spotify, more than any other Beatles song; in second place is "Let It Be" with 957,259,543, while "Come Together" is in third place with 965,933,617. But while "Come Together" and "Let It Be" were both released as singles, from Abbey Road and Let It Be, respectively, "Here Comes the Sun" was not.

Interestingly enough, the band's fourth and fifth most streamed songs weren't among their many #1 or Top 10 hits, either, as neither "Blackbird" (694,091,599 streams) nor "In My Life" (626,203,305 streams) were released as singles.

As the numbers prove, a song can become a classic without ever spending any time on the charts. But considering how beloved "Here Comes the Sun" has always been, why wasn't it released as a single in the first place?

In a 1969 interview which aired on BBC Radio One, journalist David Wigg praised Harrison for writing "two of the most beautiful songs on Abbey Road" ("Here Comes the Sun" and "Something"), which had recently been released.

"We've been so used to Lennon/McCartney compositions and of course people have been commenting this week about 'Something' and 'Here Comes the Sun,' which are your own compositions. How did this all happen? It's so unusual for you to contribute so much to an LP," Wigg said.

Harrison gently corrected Wigg, saying, "Well, not really."

"I mean, the last album we did had four songs of mine on it," he explained. "I thought they were alright. So I thought these, 'Something' and 'Here Comes The Sun' was ok...maybe a bit more commercial but as songs not much better than the songs on the last album. But I've been writing for a couple of years now. And there's been lots of songs I've written which I haven't got 'round to recording. So, you know, in my own mind I don't see what the fuss is, because I've heard these songs before and I wrote them, you know quite a while back. And it's really nice that people like the songs, but..."

Wigg went on to ask whether Harrison considered himself a "late developer as a songwriter."

"The only reason I started to write songs was because I thought, well if [John Lennon and Paul McCartney] can write them, I can write them," Harrison replied.

"You know, 'cuz really, everybody can write songs if they want to," he continued. "If they have a desire to and if they have sort of some musical knowledge and background. And then it's by writing them the same as writing books or writing articles or painting...the more you do it, the better or the more you can understand how to do it. And I used to just write songs. I still do. I just write a song and it just comes out however it wants to. And some of them are catchy songs like 'Here Comes The Sun' and some of them aren't, you know. But to me there's just songs and I just write them and some will be considered as good by maybe the masses and some won't. But to me they're just songs, things that are there that have to be got out."

Over half a century later, the masses are clearly still listening to "Here Comes the Sun."

After more than a decade at the top, Chick-fil-A is no longer America's favorite quick-service restaurant.

According to the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) Restaurant and Food Delivery Study, Jersey Mike's claimed the top spot this year with a score of 84 out of 100, edging out Chick-fil-A, which scored an 83.

The report called the result historic, declaring: "For the first time in over a decade, there is a new leader among QSRs."

The annual study surveyed more than 16,000 consumers between April 2025 and March 2026, measuring satisfaction across factors like food quality, service, convenience and value.

Jersey Mike's Rises to the Top

Jersey Mike's is a newcomer to the ACSI rankings, which makes its debut at number one even more notable.

The report described the sandwich chain as "a new leader among QSRs" and pointed to its strong business performance, growing customer demand and convenient ordering options.

"Jersey Mike's ACSI success is consistent with their business performance, including rapid unit growth, strong customer demand, and a model designed around throughput and off-premise convenience from high digital pickup usage," the study noted.

Founded in New Jersey in 1956, Jersey Mike's has grown to more than 4,000 locations across the U.S. and Canada. The chain is known for its made-to-order subs and its signature "Mike's Way" style, which tops sandwiches with onions, lettuce, tomatoes, olive oil blend, red wine vinegar and spices.

Meanwhile, Chick-fil-A remains one of the country's most beloved restaurant brands. Although it lost the top overall ranking, the ACSI noted that the chain "is still the clear leader for chicken."

Jimmy John's and Panda Express tied for third place with scores of 81, while KFC, Papa Johns and Pizza Hut followed closely behind with scores of 80.
