Pittsburgh’s Penguins Just Had the Ultimate Snow Day, and the Videos Are Pure Joy
Penguins are adorable no matter what they are doing. They could be standing completely still, and people would flock to ooh and aww over their charming beaked faces and wobbly feet. Of course, it's far more exciting to watch them flipping through the air or sliding around on their ice shelves.
While zoo penguins are no strangers to snow, they still become excited when it falls from the sky, and nothing is cuter than a penguin flapping its wings and running about in freshly fallen powder. With a recent onslaught of snow, zoo animals from lions to pandas have had the chance to frolic in the fresh, feathery wonderland.

Penguins Have a Blast in the Snow @pghzooWinter storm Fern drove Pittsburgh humans into hibernation when she roared into town on Sunday, upsetting routines and cranking thermostats. The animals at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium weathered the storm well thanks to the care of our dedicated animal care staff. You can read more about what our animals were up to during the snow storm on our website!
♬ I'll Believe in Anything - Wolf ParadeThe Pittsburgh Penguins may be the city's hockey team, but they are also a pretty popular group of gentoo penguins that live at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. Here, they delight zoo visitors with their antics and adorable beaked faces.
During a recent winter storm, the resident penguins were set free in their enclosure to run, play, and slide about on the freshly accumulated powder. Boy, did these penguins make the best of it. The penguins could be seen jumping in the air and belly flopping here, there, and everywhere. At one point, it even looked like they were having a bit of a conference. It was almost like they were planning their next move.
Of course, the cheeky interaction led fans to dig into the millennial movie vault and pull out some recognizable quotes from a crew of equally lovable penguins: the penguins of Madagascar. Lines like "Smile and wave, boys," and "Cute and cuddly, boys... cute and cuddly" were filling the comments.
Many viewers were overjoyed that the penguins had a chance to play in the snow, with some even saying that watching this drew them to tears. One even said they cried while watching this video and the polar bear video.
Whether it made you cry or gave you a laugh or two, this penguin video is sure to brighten up your day. There's nothing more smile-worthy than a penguin flopping around on its belly.
Where do Gentoo Penguins Live in the Wild? While most commentators were emotionally overwhelmed by the sight of penguins playing in the snow, because it is considered their home environment, that's not entirely accurate. Different penguin species live in a variety of environments. The Pittsburgh Zoo features its Gentoo penguins in the video, who live in the Antarctic.
While their island homes are cold, these penguins prefer areas that are ice-free to claim as their nesting grounds. They choose flat, rock-filled beaches and shallow cliffs to set up their colonies and hunt in the ocean for their food. So the Pittsburgh zoo's penguins' reaction was less about reminiscing about their natural habitat and more about them having some fun enrichment time.
The population declined briefly, but the IUCN Red List currently lists them as stable and of low threat. In 2012, the population was trending downward, but the penguins' well-being turned positive and began to grow. But work from zoos like Pittsburgh and others in the AZA network is important for keeping these animals from slipping back into the endangered category on the list.

What's an AZA Accredited Zoo and Why is it Important? While it is sad to see animals in zoos or sanctuaries rather than in their natural habitats, it's important to note that today's zoos are not like the ones we grew up with, especially if they are part of the AZA family.
The Association of Zoos & Aquariums has an accreditation process that evaluates facilities; it does not grant accreditation to everyone who applies. The facility or organization is evaluated by 16 industry professionals who assess zoos and aquariums to ensure they meet AZA standards. Then, a facility can receive accreditation. Approved facilities review the process again every five years.
AZA zoos focus on conservation, education, and research with a special focus on rare and endangered animals. They also have a Species Survival Plan for these animals, which includes safe, monitored breeding programs to increase their population.

Dachshund Boldly 'Declines Bedtime' Until He Gets Belly Rubs
Waffles, the Dachshund, demands belly rubs at bedtime. Or else!
“Goodnight,” Waffles’ pet mamma says in a hilarious TikTok clip as she takes her hand away from the Doxie’s midsection.
As soon as Mom’s hand disconnects from Waffles, this adorable pooch begins having a bit of a temper tantrum.
Waffles first lets out a gentle grunt to signal his displeasure. Then he begins to growl!
“Go to bed,” his mom continues. “Don’t be sassy!”
@thewafflesmonroeWhen it’s officially bedtime and you’re still being growled at. Compliance remains…optional. 😴🐶 #dachshundlife #spoileddog #petparentlife #doghumor #dogsoftiktok

“When it’s officially bedtime, and you’re still being growled at,” Waffles’ pet mamma says in the clip. “Compliance remains optional.”

Fans couldn’t get enough of Waffles, and they had lots to share on TikTok.
“Waffles will go to bed exactly when you stop telling him to do it,” a viewer noted. “He’s his own master.”
“Waffles says he’s just matching attitudes,” another person added.
“Seems like someone has to have the last word!” a third chimed in.

This certainly brings back memories for me! When my kids were younger, they were known to throw a tantrum or two if they were not ready to hit the hay. I get it!
That said, I don’t recall any of them emitting menacing growls—phew! Tons of whining but no frightening howls.
Oh Waffles! You’re too much! Such a funny but moody little fella!
Are Dachshunds Moody?Sure, Dachshunds can be a little moody! But it’s usually more about personality and breed traits than actual mood swings.
Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds are independent, strong-willed, and bold!
Still, I don’t think there’s any reason for Waffles to growl at his mamma. In fact, it looks like he’s got a super comfy setup that a lot of other dogs would envy!
I think the best solution for Mom here is to just keep rubbing that belly until Waffles falls asleep. I’m sure he looks like a little angel when he’s slumbering, but boy, is he devilish at bedtime!
Go to sleep, Waffles!
Ragdoll Cat Stops Everything To Admire the 'Other Cat' in the Mirror
There are a million different reasons why cats make us smile and make our lives infinitely better. From the purrs and cuddles to the zoomies and learning new tricks, we collect the best lifelong memories thanks to our kitties, and new experiences, too.
One of my top perks of being a cat parent is seeing them experience new things. Their first time on a cat tree, their first real-food treat, and discovering things they’re seeing for the first time. And one video of a beautiful Ragdoll cat seeing herself in the mirror for the first time is an example of one of those incredible things we get to witness. Take a look!
@princess.tullyFound herself in the mirror 🤣 #catsoftiktok #ragdoll #cat #cattok #fyp
♬ original sound - Princess Tully -TikTok user @princess.tully shared a video of Princess Tully, a stunning Ragdoll cat who is just going about her day until she discovers something she was very much not ready for. It appeared, to her, that a cat entered her room without her knowledge, and she had no idea where the kitty came from.
One thing Princess Tully is sure of after spotting the look-alike Ragdoll cat in her home is that she's stunning. Whoever that cat is took Princess Tully's breath away, made her stop in her tracks, and she had no idea it was just her reflection.

In the comments, people had a good time giggling at her reaction to seeing the unknown kitten in the mirror.
One person wrote, "This furbaby just stole our hearts."
Another added, "That moment of 'Is that… me?' 😹 The confusion, the curiosity, the tiny pause like they’re about to have a full identity crisis. Cats in mirrors will never not be funny, and this one absolutely nailed it. Thanks for sharing such a cute little moment!"
Someone else added, "So beautiful," and another echoed, "Beautiful."
And another wrote, "We can’t get enough of your cuteness!"

Can Cats Recognize Themselves in Mirrors?Princess Tully, spotting herself in the mirror, caught her attention for sure, but she didn't seem to recognize that the cat she saw was just a reflection of herself. Is that how kitties see mirrors? Why don't they recognize themselves?
Experts from Hill's Pet Nutrition explain that cats like Princess Tully react the way they do because they don't recognize themselves in that reflection. So she's not stopping to admire herself. Instead, she's reacting in a defensive way because she thinks that reflection really is another feline.
Floofy Shih-Poo’s Dramatic Showdown With a Carrot Is Pure Chaos
A floofy Shih-Poo puppy has declared war on a carrot, and honestly, it is the most dramatic vegetable showdown of the year. The little brown-and-white fluffball pounces, thumps, licks, retreats, and re-engages like the carrot personally insulted him.
In the video, you can hear his mom off camera asking in the sweetest voice, “You love carrots, don’t cha’?” as the Shih-Poo launches himself at the unsuspecting vegetable. His oversized puppy paws hit the floor with dramatic little thumps as he bites, backs up, and then charges again like he is training for battle.

♬ original sound - Chew Chew The ShihPooThe cute TikTok video was shared by @chew.chew.the.shihpoo, and at one point, his mom asks, “Are you excited?” which feels like the understatement of the century. The caption seals it: “The carrot came at me first. I don’t start problems, I finish them.”
The comments were perfection.

“This is like me at work… maximum effort without doing a thing.”
“That’s a very aggressive carrot.”
“The carrot is his worst enemy and best friend.”
“My pup does the same thing with her carrots; she even picks them up and gives them a little toss.”
And my personal favorite: “OMG, that is me with a cookie.”
Of course, one comment raised a serious question, claiming carrots are difficult for pups to digest and could cause pancreatitis over time because dogs lack salivary amylase, unlike humans.
So is that true? Are carrots dangerous for dogs? Let’s get into it.
Can Dogs Eat Carrots? @drkatrinawarrenMy dog really wants some 🥕 🤣 Carrots are considered a safe healthy snack for dogs provided they are given in moderation…. ideally cut into bite sized pieces and steamed/ cooked to preveny choking. Talk to your vet if your pet has dietary issues before introducing any new food. @ @Dr Katrina #pettips #dogtips #treatsfordogs
♬ original sound - Dr KatrinaIn general, yes. Most dogs can safely eat carrots in moderation. Carrots are low in calories and contain fiber and vitamins like beta carotene. While it is true that dogs don't produce salivary amylase the same way humans do, they still produce digestive enzymes in the pancreas that help break down carbohydrates and plant matter.
Pancreatitis in dogs is usually associated with high-fat foods, not low-calorie vegetables like carrots. That said, every dog is different. Large chunks of raw carrot can pose a choking risk for small breeds, so cutting them into manageable pieces is important.
As always, treats should be given in moderation, and if a dog has underlying health issues, it is best to check with a veterinarian before adding new foods.
In this case, the carrot seems less like a health concern and more like a sworn enemy. And judging by that full-contact pounce routine, this Shih-Poo is not backing down anytime soon.

Golden-Hearted Hero Dog Saves the Day in Missing Toddler Search
Dogs are often used in helping police with search and rescue missions. These dogs receive highly specialized training to be able to assist the police, but sometimes, even an untrained dog may jump in and help—even when they haven't received the appropriate training.
Police officers in Louisville, Kentucky, had been searching for a three-year-old boy for a while. They spread out through the neighborhood, checking yards and patrolling the streets. Yet, they couldn't find any clear sign pointing to the missing boy.
That changed when an unfamiliar neighborhood dog crossed paths with Officer Josh Thompson of the Metro Police Department. The dog began barking persistently and walking toward a nearby home. His barking caught the police officer's attention, and Thompson followed the animal into a backyard and around the side of the house.
The dog helped guide the police to an SUV in the garage. There, they found the boy in the front passenger seat, clearly relieved when the officers opened the door.

The department later shared body camera footage showing the exact moment officers realized that the dog was helping them. The boy was happily reunited with his family, and the Louisville police credited the unexpected aid of the dog with the rescue.
How Animals Sense DangerThis story is a beautiful reminder of how animals, dogs in particular, can sometimes alert people to situations that humans often miss. Domestic animals can easily recognize a deviation from a normal routine and seek out human intervention. Because dogs thrive on routine, any deviation from it is a clear signal to them that something is not right.

Often, we view our relationship with pets as one-sided caretaking. However, this dog is a clear example of the deep relationship we have. Animals have become an integral part of our daily lives, often monitoring our safety in ways technology cannot.
How Police Train Dogs for Search and Rescue MissionsPolice departments invest significant time and resources into training canines for search and rescue operations.
This process begins with young puppies, with trainers carefully selecting breeds that have a keen sense of smell, intelligence and stamina. Some of the most popular breeds include German shepherd, Belgian Malinois and bloodhounds.
Training can last anywhere from several months to a full year. Handlers teach dogs to track human scent, investigate various terrains and remain focused despite any distractions.
Most importantly, these dogs learn how to alert their handlers when they have located a missing person using signals such as barking, sitting or returning to the handler.

Crafty Golden Retriever Steals iPad To Watch Favorite Show Like a Little TV Critic
The kind of things dogs are into these days feels a little too much like raising my kids. Like them, my rescue Staffy and Corgi have high standards when it comes to how they spend their free time. One must-have is that the TV has to be on, if only for background noise to stamp out the silence, or my pups will bark at everything.
Oakley, the Golden Retriever, would fit in my crew, but he's a little more bougie with his iPad obsession. What he's doing on there—and the lengths he'll go to, to have the iPad—are hilarious (and exactly why my pups can't have an iPad of their own!).
A happy Golden Retriever smiles while posing outside.Dogs like what they like, and in this video, Oakley likes his iPad. If Mom takes it away, he'll promptly throw the biggest toddler tantrum he can muster until he gets it back. Honestly, though, he's so cute, I'd just hand it over.

♬ Originalton - AlvaTheHotDogAs Mom explained, he doesn't play when it comes to this thing, but he's not doing what other dogs do with theirs. While many pups enjoy having Bluey on the screen, this iPad kid prefers playing a game. That's right—this Golden Retriever is a gamer boy at heart, and no one will keep him from playing!

About Oakley's Favorite GameThere are a million and one things Mom could turn on that iPad, and Oakley may not care. As I said, the fan favorite among pooches is usually Bluey because it's made with colors dogs can see and voices that intrigue them.
Oakley's passion isn't watching cat videos; however, it's a game called "Jolly Dog," and it's made for dogs! Described via the App Store as pet entertainment that offers "an endless loop where a bunch of different toys and creatures are living, squeaking, and running all around the screen just waiting to be caught." Senior Street Dog with 'Massive Tumor' Beats the Odds and Starts His Best Chapter of Life
Niall Harbison continues to expand his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. He recently opened a Retirement Village for senior street dogs to spend the rest of their days in comfort and peace with plenty of food, medical care, and loving affection.
Atlas the German Shepherd mix endured great hardship living on the streets for years with an enormous tumor. After a risky surgery, the precious pooch is now living his best life and gets the happy ending he deserves.
View this post on InstagramThe Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo shared how Atlas wouldn't have survived on the streets much longer due to his health.
"Time was running out for this old street dog," the onscreen text explained as the senior canine initially fought Harbison's attempts to rescue him from the horrible conditions he was living in. The animal advocate and his team members finally cornered Atlas and got him on a leash. "We're going to help you," Harbison gently told the frightened fur baby.
Harbison brought Atlas to the Happy Doggo medical clinic, where veterinarians examined a massive tumor attached to his undercarriage. The growth was so huge that it literally weighed the dog down. The vets had to operate on Atlas for him to live a normal life.
"The surgery was risky, but it was his only chance," the story continued. Harbison stayed by Atlas's side before and after surgery to make sure he had the comfort he needed.
Atlas Has a New HomeThe operation was a success, and Atlas not only survived but thrived. The canine cutie was able to run freely and enjoy life without the enormous tumor destroying his health. Scenes of Atlas romping on the beach with a Happy Doggo team member highlighted the senior pooch's new beginning.
But wait... there's more! After "surviving the streets" his whole life and "beating the odds" in surgery, Atlas will now enjoy his next chapter of life in Harbison's newly designed Golden Ticket Retirement Village.

"Atlas will live out the rest of his life with us at Happy Doggo in our retirement village," the caption shared. "He has a safe place to sleep, good food every day, and his own private vet care whenever he needs it."
The brave senior dog will also have furry friends to play with and plenty of hugs and kisses from staff members. Atlas finally has his fairy tale ending.
"You did it, Atlas," the caption concluded. "You’re home."
Harbison launched Happy Doggo in 2021. In addition to the sterilization and daily feeding of thousands of street dogs, he recently opened a full-service medical clinic in honor of his beloved Golden Retriever, Tina.

Westie Who Loves Winter Gets the Cutest Case of the 'Snow Zoomies'
Listen, I'm a New Englander. It has been snowing here since Thanksgiving, and let me tell you, my dogs and I are all so over it! We want to be warm! Is that really so much to ask?!
Apparently, not everyone feels that way. There's one Westie out there who's really enjoying being outside in the wintertime. She's still so enamored with the snow that she even got a case of the zoomies:
@westiechaoscrewKleo absolutely loses her mind every time it snows. This is her favorite season ❄️🐶 #westie #westies #snowdog #dogmoments #dogsoftiktok
♬ оригінальний аудіозапис - Westie Chaos CrewThe Westie Chaos Crew is three strong. They live to annoy their mom, who likes to pretend to be bothered. She's not, though, because they're just too cute! They are:
- Kleo, the mama of the group.
- Mary, the dramatic one.
- Hermes, the one who causes most of the chaos.
- Goldie, who only comes over sometimes to cause chaos.
They thrive in all seasons, since they're very well loved, but winter is where they shine. Kleo in particular goes nuts when it snows, which is just too cute. She's so little she almost gets lost!
Related: West Highland Puppies Take Turns Escaping Baby Gate in Irresistible 'Prison' Break
Kleo is actually both Mary and Hermes' biological mom. They get their chaotic genes from her for sure; when the Christmas tree was up, those three worked all season on a plan to bring it down.
While their plans were ultimately unsuccessful, their other target wasn't so lucky. One of them managed to take out the snow broom quicker than you can say "blizzard!"
@westiechaoscrewI was just trying to clean the rug, but Goldie decided the brush was hers. Zero regrets 😂🐶 #westie #westies #dogmoments #funnydogs #petsoftiktok
♬ A Funny Song Christmas - Funny Song Studio & Sounds ReelThat's so funny. Who needs a clean rug when you could have fun instead?!
Snow Usually Causes ZoomiesZoomies are way more scientific than you might think! They're actually really cool: the technical name for them is Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs). FRAPs happen to any dog at any age, and as the name suggests, they're random.
There are a few triggers, though, including:
- Excitement.
- Being in a new place.
- Being overstimulated.
- Sudden introduction to new textures (like suddenly getting wet).
- Sudden temperature change (like suddenly being very cold).
Snow is both wet and very cold, so for dogs, it's almost always going to trigger a case of the zoomies. At least it will at first; as they adjust to the environment, their body will learn what to expect.
Not Kleo, though. She'll be zooming forever!

Tortie Maine Coon’s Ultra-Fluffy Ears Are So Kissable and Sweet
My dogs are all short-haired, and while they have great ears, they're not super fluffy. I love petting them anyway, but sometimes, I do think it would be fun to have some fluff to play with.

Husky Cannot Handle Newborn Twins Crying and Makes It Everyone’s Problem
A Husky named Levi is discovering that life with newborn twins is not for the faint of heart. The expressive working dog lies on the living room floor while two swaddled newborn babies cry on the sofa behind him, and instead of staying quiet, he decides to offer commentary.
The Husky reaction to crying babies is pure Husky. He throws his head back and howls dramatically, without even bothering to get up off the floor, as if personally offended by the lack of peace. It is not aggressive, but it is not subtle. It is a full performance. Just a really lazy one.
@levithehuskyrescueyes, he yells at me whenever they cry, only now it’s a little less enthusiastically #husky #funnydogs #dogvideos
♬ original sound - Levi, Smuckers + The Twins@levithehuskyrescue shared this video with a caption that reads, “My Husky is so exhausted from the newborn trenches that he doesn't even bother to get up to tell me they're crying anymore,” and continues, “Yes, he yells at me whenever they cry, only now, it’s a little less enthusiastically.”
Related: Golden Retriever Claims Newborn's Blankie as 'His' and It's Pure, Wholesome Goodness
You can see it. Levi looks like a dad who has been up for three straight nights and has simply reached his limit. He doesn't even stand up to alert anyone anymore. He just howls from the floor like a tired middle manager clocking overtime.
“Newborn twins AND a Husky. Y’all really hate sleep and peace, don’t you?” one person wrote.
“Bless him, he’s just a single mom who works two jobs. He deserves a tropical vacation!” another added.
Someone else said, “Two newborns and two Huskies? Oh, I’m praying for you,” while another shared, “My Husky used to get so mad at me when my daughter started crying. I was never moving fast enough for her. She gave me an F for my parenting.”
Related: Husky ‘Protects Mom’s Baby Bump’ Like It’s His Full Time Job
That seems to be the case with Levi, too. His howling feels less like annoyance and more like deep concern mixed with exhaustion. “Poor Levi, being a big brother must be exhausting,” someone commented, and that pretty much sums it up.
I have to admit, when my babies were little, I only had cats. They never cried at the sound of a baby. They did, however, fully claim the crib and bassinet as premium nap real estate whenever they could. Not helpful, but very committed to comfort.
Levi, on the other hand, has taken on the role of vocal newborn supervisor. Whether anyone asked him to or not.

3 Huskies Attend Largest Golden Retriever Meet-Up and the Internet Is 'Howling'
An annual Golden Retriever meet-up hosted thousands of silky-haired attendees — plus three very sneaky impostors. The trio of Huskies arrived "in disguise" and hilariously tried to pass themselves off as Golden Retrievers. Their humans dressed them in yellow dog costumes with signs around their necks that read "Don't Be Suspicious," "Golden on the Inside," and -- my personal favorite -- "Identity Crisis" in an attempt to blend in with the crowd.
Obviously, their plans to remain incognito were foiled rather quickly, but all in good fun. The Huskies were the hit of the convention, posing for photos, stopping for cuddles, and enjoying pup cups as honorary Goldens for a day.
@2husketeersWe’re Golden on the inside! 😉 Think we fooled anyone at Goldens in Golden? Every year 5,000+ Golden Retrievers flood the streets of Golden, Colorado! We had FOMO living here for four years and never had been, so this year we decided to go and blend in. 😂 No Huskies here! #goldensingolden #goldencolorado #huskies #coloradodogs #dogtok
♬ original sound - 2husketeersAs one commenter posted, "Definitely my fav trio in the pack!"
"I just see three good pups," posted another.
And one viewer even shared that Colorado hosts a similar meet-up for Huskies: the annual Husky Huddle. Too cute!

Dog-Friendly Travel 101Unless you live in Golden, Colorado, attending this annual joyfest requires some travel for you and your pup. Traveling with your dog can be a great experience — but the key is preparation. Before any trip, veterinarians recommend checking with your doctor to make sure your dog is healthy enough to travel, up to date on vaccines, and protected against issues like motion sickness or anxiety.
You’ll also want to research your transportation method ahead of time. Airlines, trains, and even road trips have different safety rules, size requirements, and paperwork expectations, and some trips may require a recent health certificate. Pet-friendly accommodations are also necessary and should be booked in advance (and always confirm policies before arrival). Several websites are available to help with researching and planning pet-friendly transportation and accommodations.
Packing a dog-specific travel kit — food, water bowls, medications, comfort items, and cleanup supplies — helps keep them comfortable and reduces stress. Experts suggest practicing with carriers, crates, seat belts, or other travel gear before the trip so your dog associates it with positive experiences. When traveling by car, dogs should be secured and given regular breaks for water, exercise, and bathroom stops.
In short: the more you plan, the smoother (and safer) the trip will be for both of you.

Baby Dachshund ‘Takes On’ Big German Shepherd and Totally Takes Her Down
You might think German Shepherds are fearless. They're so multipurpose, whether they're working on a farm, sniffing out bombs, or accompanying police officers on potentially dangerous outtings.
One German Shepherd has proved all of the stereotypes wrong, though. When her new Dachshund sister moved in, she wanted her to know that she was completely safe. The tables turned quickly, though, and it turns out she's the threat here:
@winnie.the.mini4dachshund law: if sister has it, I need it #puppytiktok #dachshund #puppylife #germanshepherd
♬ original sound - Winnie the MiniWinnie the Mini Dachshund has only been in her forever home for a few weeks at this point, but she's already totally taken over. She has two big sisters: another Dachshund and this German Shepherd. Neither of them has been named on TikTok yet, though.
Before Winnie, the German Shepherd was the baby of the family. The transition has been tough, but it's so chaotic that she really can't process it. Winnie moves faster than anyone else!

Winnie is a classic dachshund, and she follows Dachshund Law to a tee. What that means is that, if someone else has something, Winnie wants it. Winnie needs it. It is Winnie's.
Her attitude is hilarious, and her love of biting everything has started getting her in trouble. She loves this new game she recently discovered called "Hold On and Don't Let Go." The best object for this game is whatever's in mom's hand at the time:
@winnie.the.mini4She does it everytime #puppytiktok #dachshund #puppylife #petlife

Dachshunds Are BitersWinnie is proof, but everyone already knows that Dachshunds love to bite. They may be small, but they're mighty, and their jaws are no joke!
Dachshunds were bred to crawl into dens and literally drag out the animals who lived in there. As a result, their jaws are super strong; they had to be able to hold onto animals as they thrashed around. Dachshunds are:
- Stubborn.
- Prone to chasing.
- Prone to biting whatever they can.
Ankles, clothing, and even fingers are never safe around Dachshunds. Now Winnie's poor sisters are on the chopping block, too!

Rescue Dog Turns 25 and Could Be the World’s Oldest Living Dog
Henry the rat terrier has officially entered super-senior status.
The rescue pup celebrated his 25th birthday on Jan. 15—a milestone that could make him eligible for the title of the world’s oldest living dog. His mom, Lori Larson of Max’s Animal Rescue in Hoboken, Georgia, is currently in the process of applying through Guinness World Records, gathering the required DNA testing and years of veterinary records.

Henry Celebrates His 25th Birthday @henry.the.old.dog ♬ original sound - Henry the old dogWhile Henry’s milestone birthday is undoubtedly impressive, his story is about much more than a number. Larson first met Henry in January 2010 when he was nine years old and living in dire conditions at an overwhelmed backyard breeding operation. After receiving a call from a Georgia official warning that the dogs’ lives were at risk, she rushed to the location.
Larson agreed to bring all 29 dogs to Max’s Animal Rescue, the nonprofit, no-kill sanctuary she and her husband, Jim Larson, founded in 2007. Before long, that number nearly doubled to 60 when several of the pregnant dogs she rescued gave birth.
Over time, most of the dogs found homes, but Henry did not. When he arrived, he was unsocialized, frightened and could barely tolerate human touch. But she refused to give up on him. At Max’s Animal Rescue, animals aren’t euthanized for space, and that commitment gave Henry the time he needed.
Over several years, Henry relaxed and opened up, and today, Larson calls him a “little gentleman” who feels safest curled up in her lap.
A Super Senior With a MissionAt 25, Henry is blind and being treated for pulmonary hypertension (he even has his own cardiologist and pulmonologist!). But senior care doesn’t come cheap. Specialist visits, medications, routine blood work and dental procedures can quickly add up. Larson says Henry’s specialist visits cost at least $1,100 per visit.
That's why instead of simply celebrating his longevity, Henry is using his milestone birthday to shine a light on a larger issue: senior dogs in rescue.
Related: Animal Rescue Builds 'Disney Land for Senior Street Dogs' and It's the Best
While puppies and emergency rescues often attract the most donations, senior rescue dogs can quietly accumulate significant medical bills over time. Through his “Henry the Old Dog” social media pages (Facebook, Instagram and TikTok) and a GoFundMe fundraiser dedicated to his birthday, Henry is helping raise funds not only for his own care, but also for the other seven long-stay senior dogs currently cared for at Max’s Animal Rescue.
In the long run, the Larsons hope to raise six figures so they can create grants for other shelters, helping cover the medical costs of senior, long-term residents and giving more aging pets the chance to live out their golden years with comfort and care.
Whether or not Guinness officially crowns Henry the world’s oldest living dog, one thing is certain: his life is already record-breaking in another way.
From frightened breeder dog to 25-year-old advocate for senior pets, Henry’s story is proof that rescue dogs, no matter their age, still have plenty of love (and purpose) left to give.

Man Filming With Birds of Prey Is Like a 'Dad Trying to Get His Toddlers to Behave'
Creating content really is for the birds.
At least, that's how a beleaguered but good-humored handler is likely feeling after attempting to film with his unruly raptors. The striking birds act more like strong-willed children as they squawk over him, peck at his mic, disappear off-camera, and generally wreak havoc in this TikTok compilation of hilarious outtakes.
UK-based SMJ Falconry boasts a variety of predatory birds, including owls, hawks, and smaller breeds like the kestrel, which is one of the naughty stars of this video. The handler tries to reason with the cute little bird, begging it to "stay on the glove so [he] can record this." It takes off, anyway, and the sound of a metal object crashing to the ground can be heard in the distance, along with a frustrated sigh from the handler.

One person even described the birds as "toddlers with talons."
We couldn't agree more.

What Is Falconry?Falconry — the ancient practice of hunting with birds of prey — offers participants a rare, up-close look at nature in action. Rather than training a bird as a pet, falconers work alongside predatory birds, releasing them to hunt small animals while the human helps locate prey and provides the hunter with food.
The sport is tightly regulated and requires serious commitment. New falconers must complete a multi-year apprenticeship, pass exams, and maintain proper housing and daily care for the bird. These raptors aren’t domesticated companions — they remain wild animals that choose whether or not to return after a hunt.
Instead of spikes, nets, or fake owls, many hotels and large buildings are turning to birds of prey as a natural solution for nuisance birds. Trained hawks and falcons are being used to deter pigeons, seagulls, and other persistent visitors from nesting, stealing food, or leaving messes in public spaces. I've personally been to several hotels in California and Mexico that use Harris Hawks to keep nuisance birds from hanging around. Their mere presence perched on their handler's arm is enough to scare the smaller pests away.

Rare Brown Ragdoll Cat Is Pure Chocolatey Goodness
I have very standard-looking pets. Don't get it twisted, I love them with all my heart, but I do love to look at others. Some people just have such cool, cute animals living in their homes!
Just look at this boy: a stunning chocolatey-brown Ragdoll cat. He's super fluffy, and his color is just so rich and full! If he were a treat, he'd be a cocoa truffle that people would call "dangerous" after taking a bite:

He is a boy cat, though, which means that he's obsessed with his mom. He worships her completely and prefers to spend all his time staring directly at her, which is hilarious:

What Are Mink Ragdolls?Finn is definitely not your typical Ragdoll: they're mostly white, often with a little bit of another color on their face, back, and tail. Finn, however, is 100% chocolatey brown; he's a Mink Ragdoll.
Mink Ragdolls are a subset of Ragdoll cats that have, at some point in their lineage, been cross-bred to produce cats with different, richer-colored coats. Mink Ragdolls are:
- Velvety soft.
- Affectionate.
- Highly trainable.
Though not technically "Ragdolls" in everyone's eyes, Minks are TICA-recognized, and more importantly, stunning! Go Finn go!

Retired German Shepherd K9 Is Completely Mesmerized By Cupcake in Sweet Video
A retired German Shepherd K9 staring at a single cupcake like it just descended from heaven is already enough to destroy me emotionally, but knowing this is Rider’s first real birthday party after a life of service? That’s next-level.
In the TikTok video, Rider is sitting on his bed, birthday hat slightly crooked, when his humans set a cupcake in front of him. He doesn’t dive in. He doesn’t even blink. His eyes get huge, his ears tilt, and he just stares at this tiny frosted miracle like he’s trying to download what’s happening. His family explains that Rider is Dad’s retired military K9 partner, and this is his first official birthday celebration and the first time he’s ever seen a cupcake. No wonder he looks stunned. For years, every day was about work, focus, danger, and duty. Suddenly, the mission is… sprinkles?
@mwdrex_and_riderI love to share this every year. Rider will be 9 next week. Loving his retired life #mwd #gsd #k9 #dog #fyp
♬ original sound - Rex & RiderThey weren’t expecting that reaction, but thankfully, they caught it on video—and now they celebrate him like this every year. Rider is about to turn nine, and his people proudly say he is loving his retired life. As he leans in toward that cupcake, you can almost feel the weight lifting off his shoulders: no more deployments, no more patrols, just soft beds, goofy hats, and being told he’s the goodest boy for the rest of his days.
It is such a beautiful reminder that our working dogs don’t clock out the way we do. They pour everything they have into keeping humans safe, and then one day, they’re just… done. That’s where we come in.
Our K9 Heroes Deserve Soft LandingsRider’s big cupcake moment is adorable, but it also quietly underlines something important: retirement should be sweet for dogs who’ve only ever known duty.
Organizations like American Humane’s “Care for Our Heroes” program work to reunite retired military working dogs with their handlers and help cover lifelong medical care so these K9 veterans can spend their remaining years as cherished family members, not tools of the job.
If Rider could talk, he’d probably say the cupcake is nice, but the real gift is finally being “just a dog”—sleeping in, getting spoiled, and being loved for who he is, not what he can do.
May every working dog get a goofy birthday hat, a safe couch to snore on, and a family that looks at them the way Rider looks at that cupcake.

Another added, “Aww, amazing what love doggos can give.”
And @Wonkeydonkey asked, “Can she get any cuter?” It may not be possible.
But if anyone could prove that wrong, it might be a Bloodhound puppy who loves her job this much.
To see Penny in training mode, you can check her out in this February 1 video, where she was tracking on a 12-degree day in Connecticut and absolutely nailed the assignment:
@k9pennyfpdWe did 6 tracks that day in 12° weather. 🥶 #bloodhound #k9 #policek9
♬ original sound - K9PennyFPD Bloodhounds Are Known for Their Outstanding Tracking AbilityAccording to the American Kennel Club, Bloodhounds are renowned for their powerful scenting ability, allowing them to follow trails that are days old and making them one of the most respected tracking breeds in the world.
Bloodhounds have more scent receptors than most other breeds, and their long ears and loose facial skin help trap scent particles and funnel them toward the nose. This unique physical combination enhances their ability to stay locked onto a specific trail over long distances.
As the AKC explains, throughout law enforcement history Bloodhounds have located missing persons, uncovered evidence, and tracked down criminals. The organization even notes that some exceptional pups have solved more cases for police departments than the best human detectives.
That instinct is exactly what Penny is training to develop. And judging by her enthusiasm at the station, she’s already proving she has both the nose and the heart for the job.
Scared Shelter Cat Who 'No One Could Hold' Finally Chooses His Person in Moment of Sweetness
Dogs and cats who are rescued from abuse and unbearable living conditions need time to heal from past trauma. They are often fearful and resistant to any sort of human contact and too afraid to trust. It takes a lot of love and patience to break through that self-protective wall.
Jax the gray and white kitten was seriously shut down when his parents first met him at a shelter, but the furry feline immediately opened his heart the minute his dad held him.
@jaxwithatwistTwo years ago today we walked into the shelter to see a cat we saw online. When we entered his cage with his picture on it was empty. They told us the cat had to be moved to a separate room in the back because he was “too mean” he wasn’t getting along with the other cats, and was mean to all the people. Now we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Then we met him, there he was… the tiniest, most terrified little kitty. He didn’t want to be touched and let out the smallest little growls whenever we got close. Every sound, every movement seemed to frighten him, it broke my heart. But then… something magical happened. When we finally picked him up and placed him into my husband’s lap, it was like a switch flipped. In that moment, Jax realized he was safe. His little body relaxed, and he melted completely into my husband’s arms. The fear, the hesitation, it all disappeared, replaced with trust and love. It was instant. He had found his person, and my husband knew he had found the cat who was meant for us. That ten-minute moment changed everything. Today, we celebrate the scared little shelter kitty who chose us, trusted us, and stole our hearts forever. 🐾
♬ A Close Friend - James Newton HowardThe celebratory anniversary post from @jaxwithatwist shared the pretty kitty's story and the instant connection that formed.
"We went to the shelter to meet a cat and found a scared little kitty who no one could hold," the onscreen text explained as Jax huddled in the corner of his kennel with his face to the wall.
Jax was a feral kitten with a broken tail and was described as "mean" by shelter staff. His parents were drawn to visit the fur baby after seeing his picture online and noting a strong resemblance to their late cat, Hugo.
"When we entered his cage with his picture on it, it was empty," the caption shared. "They told us the cat had to be moved to a separate room in the back because he was 'too mean', he wasn’t getting along with the other cats, and was mean to all the people. Now we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into."
Once they met the little kitten, they immediately saw through his abrasive exterior.
"He was… the tiniest, most terrified little kitty," the story continued. "He didn’t want to be touched and let out the smallest little growls whenever we got close. Every sound, every movement seemed to frighten him, it broke my heart."
Jax Immediately Bonded with DadThe couple took a chance and Jax's future dad held the feline fur baby. That's when magic happened.
"It was like a switch flipped," the caption explained. "In that moment, Jax realized he was safe. His little body relaxed, and he melted completely into my husband’s arms. The fear, the hesitation, it all disappeared, replaced with trust and love."
The sweet scene showed Jax curling up into his dad's lap, obviously feeling loved and safe. The strong connection was mutual, where the couple knew Jax was coming home with them as a forever family member.
